Capture from DVD-R?

Hello,
Can I capture video from a DVD-R?

If it's a DVD-Video and it has been finalized, then you have two options for getting the footage into FCE for editing:
Option 1: This is the hardware method - connect a DVD player to a qualified DV device (DV camcorder, VTR or converter), then connect the DV device to the Mac via Firewire and use Capture Now.
Option 2: This is the software method - use a program like MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that FCE can work with natively.

  • Screen Capture from DVD?

This is probably the wrong place to post, but I need help in a hurry. Is there a way to do a video capture from a DVD movie that is paused? I need to get a photo and the only place I have it is in a DVD movie.
    Thanks,

.. if you're entitled to do screen captures from that DVD, simply use a different DVDplayer app:
    VLC http://www.videolan.org/
open the DVD with VLC, and the usual Apple tools as mentioned above are available ..

  • Capture from DVD?

I'm trying to edit together a reel for an actor friend of mine, and he brought me all his materials on DVD. I've only edited straight from mini dv, or gathered audio from CD. I've looked through all of my manuals, and it says nothing of capturing straight from DVD.
I am editing on my Powerbook G4, through an external hard drive, and I can import the video from the DVD, but there is no audio. I know there's a better way to do this.
Do I need to import the files into imovie and go from there?
Any help would be much appreciated.

To share with those who might also be of the same confusion, I resolved this matter as follows...
From an similar topic posted much earlier, I found the program DVDxDV online and downloaded their trial version. However, unbenounced to me, when you actually download the trial version, their insignia banner is stamped across your footage, and it is really only useful in seeing if it is compatible with your machine. In other words, to really start editing, one must BUY the program for $25.
Being as broke as I am, I tried the old fashioned way, through trial and error.
For those who are broke, I remembered what I did in film school for a project. I connected a portable DVD player, to my VTR compatible machine (which was my DVX100A camera), then connected that to my hard drive, then to my computer.
On the menu of the VCR functions (of your camera), go to AV IN/OUT Setup, and turn the DV OUT to ON. Then, in Final Cut Pro, make it an UNCONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
From there, you should see what you see on your portable dvd player screen, in your log and capture window.
Thanks for the software help, but it might be advisable for those who are editing actor reels or small pieces from DVD's to go by the linking method.

  • Screen Captures from DVD Player?

I'm using the Apple DVD v3.2, and am wondering if it's possible to catch screen captures (to use for my desk top)....from movies.
I just read the Quicktime question for screen captures, but that didn't work for the DVD player.
    Thanks,

  • Capturing from dvd

Have a very old camcorder not compatable with windows 7 . Videos are now on dvd but capturing them onto premiere elements they are not in clips and do not know how to separate them into clips to edit them Instant movie only worked on the last 15 minutes of an hour long video what do i do now

    juliej44
How are they now on the DVD? Can we assume in the DVD-VIDEO format?
What version of Premiere Elements are you using, presumed on Windows 7 64 bit?
For now, I am assuming version 11. If so and if you have DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc, you can rip the VOBs from that disc after placing the disc in the burner tray by using Add Media/DVD camera or Computer Drive/Video Importer.
Then I suggest that you use from Project Assets the Preview Window with its Set In and Set Out to trim your video. Please refer to the latter process as I have described in my blog post.

Please do not hesitate to ask for clarification for anything that I have written.

  • Options for capturing from DVD

i'm reposting in hope of a quick answer since my original question has changed.  in short, i have some vhs footage that's been converted to dvd (using a simple dvd-recorder) as well as some camcorder footage already on dvd.  now i want to edit the dvd footage in iMovie.  i understand there are several products that will convert the DVD signal into something manageable by iMovie.  i'd like to know which will work best and which is the best value for the money.
    my choices are:
    1) canopus advc 55 or 110 ($170-220)
    2) something like the elgato vcd (converts to mp4?) ($85)
    3) DVDxDV software (converts to quicktime?) ($29)
aside from the advantage for canopus of converting directly from vhs, is there any other reason (e.g. in terms of how the footage is converted) that would justify the price of the canopus now that everything's on dvd?

sounds like there isn't much of an advantage to spring for canopus unless you're starting from a true analog source, like vhs.  mp4 is not the ideal import to iMovie in terms of resolution, so DVDxDV trumps elgato.
conclusion: dvdxdv seems to be one of the best available ways to import DVD into iMovie.  not a bad price, and can be tested using the free version.

  • How do you capture from a DVD

I was told you can capture from DVD using Adobe Premiere. How do you play the DVD to allow capture?

I've also found that Tsunami's authoring suite is rather handy for this. It will allow you to pull source material from a DVD and encodes it to a 720x480 MPEG-2 that pulls right into Premiere without issue. (Just watch out for the AC-3 encoding on some of the audio files).
Just my two cents, but why go DV-AVI when the file is already in distribution state (DVD) --

  • Capturing media from DVD

Is it possible to capture video and audio media from DVD, and if so how do I do it? I am fairly new to FCP, I have experience on an AVID symphony but am acclimating myself to FCP. Any help would be appreciated.

Either of the software titles above work well ... or you can simply connect a DVD player to your DV device and set FCP device control to Non-Controllable Device, then use Capture now. Or dub the footage to a digital tape format then capture from the tape.

  • Capturing from an Internal DVD player

    Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro & FCE 3.5. Is it possible to capture using my laptop's internal DVD player or can I only capture using an external DVD player hooked up with firewire?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

You can't capture from any DVD player without converting the material. It's in completely the wrong format. You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime with the DV codec.

  • 16:9 Help needed. Workflow: extracted video from DVD, FCE HD edit & DVDSP.

    Hi,
I have a project where according to the camera person it was shot in 16:9 with the camera (assuming a DV camcorder of some sort). It was captured from the camera and converted to a DVD (VIDEO_TS folder and everything) and sent to me for editing.
What I need help with is a workflow (and settings) to edit and output this properly.
    1) My first hiccup comes in the extract. When I view the DVD that was sent to me, the video looks squished as it squeezes the video into the 4:3 aspect ratio. I was using MPEG Streamclip to extract it. I've extracted it in a 16:9 QT format and it looks fine in FCE HD. However, once I started reading more about editing 16:9 video in the FCE PDF manual, I'm wondering if I should have kept it as 4:3 and then toggled the Anamorphic setting for the sequence.
    2) Once I have the correct source to edit - are there any considerations on export for compression? I read somewhere about a program to set the anamorpgic bit for iDVD, but plan to use DVDSP so I'm assuming I can skip this step. I also read in the forum about a QT Conversion setting to use. Do I need to? I was planning to export a reference movie and use Compressor with that. I was planning to use a "Widescreen" compressor option. Is this correct?
    3) I know this is beyond this forum, but any advice on what settings should I use in producing the DVD? As noted above I plan to use DVDSP 3 to create the DVD, and I do notice the 16:9 settings in there for each track. I was planning to use the 16:9 Letterbox track setting. Is this correct?
Any other pitfalls I should be aware of as I navigate the 16:9 jungle?
    Thanks in advance.

First, with regard to your chipset - graphics/video card:
Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, featuring the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 450...
Your graphics card has no video RAM (VRAM) of its own.  So, it must use some of your system RAM to be able to function. This is 'dynamically allocated'. That is, your system decides how much system RAM to allocate to the graphics card. I am not aware of anyway to manually control this.
Next, you said you have installed Windows XP. Toshiba India has not posted any XP drivers for your system. Toshiba laptops are very finicky about using Toshiba 'tweaked' hardware drivers to be able to function properly. This computer is a Toshiba European version of your model, and it would appear to have a full set of XP drivers, these will work just fine in your system:
    Satellite Pro C650 PSC11E Downloads
The order you load the hardware drivers and Toshiba utilities is critical. The files available for download above are all zip files, so you will have to extract the .exe files to be able to install them. Install the drivers first, then the Toshiba utilities, and given that you already have XP basically working install in this order:
    1st Drivers:
    1) Chipset
    2) Storage Manager
    3) Display
    4) Sound
    5) then all other XP hardware drivers
    2nd Utilities:
    1) Common modules
    2) Hotkey utility
    3) all other XP Toshiba utilities.
    Good luck.

  • The Only Way to Import from DVD is to Encode the VOBs First?

Is there any way to get video from DVDs straight into Premiere? I guess I can import the VOBs but there's a lot of weirdness with that and that's besides the fact that to keep those files on the hard drive is ridiculous considering their size. Any ideas? If you're sure that there's no other way then please say so. Logically thinking, I doubt there is some magical other way but ya know... Either way, maybe I can get suggestions on what people find to be the best way? Thanks ^^

    David,
There are three basic ways to do this. Ann mentioned two. The other is to play the DVD from a DVD player, into an A -> D converter (your digital camera could well work for this) and capture with appropriate software. Save as DV-AVI. Each method has its ups-n-downs, but should/could get the job done.
Also see Craig's question, "Why are you editing VOBs?" as there could well be a better workflow.
    Hunt
PS Elements is a tad kinder to VOB's on Import, but not by much. I'd still use one of the three above methods.

  • Can i capture from an analog 16x9 source

Can i capture from an analog 16x9 HD source (SAT-TV) using analog (S-Video) output using a Canopus ADVC-100 into FCP 4.x and preserve the anamorphic aspect ratio? If so, how do I go about doing this (meaning, if this will even work - I'm fairly certain that the SAT box will output the 16x9 flag on s-video - what settings do i use in FCP to capture that aspect?
    Thanx in advance.

actually i am allowed to record from TV... i'm using the analog to do this. HRA allows me to do this - There are plenty of units out there that have tivo and a dvd burner that are legal) - all I'm doing is using my mac. Remember the VCR? this is no different as I am not going digital to digital or bypassing any DRM. Not to mention, I'm taping some docs that aren't even avaialble to purchase. ;(
Also, its just for my personal use. Just to have an archive of the show.
I'm using sledgehammer erquipment to just archive a show.. hehe

  • FCE capture from iSight on iMac?

    Sorry for the newbie question..
I just tried my new iMac and FCE, and I was wondering how to capture from the builtin iSight camera?
I know this is 2 questions, but can I also capture from my home movie DVD's?
    Thanks
    Gray

Neither. I believe the current version of iMovie will capture from the iSight.

  • How do i capture a dvd to edit in final cut express

do i need to "rip" the dvd and then import the file or can i capture from the dvd drive somehow?
    thanks,
    Dominic

Alternatively, you could use the free program MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/
If you don't have the MPEG-2 component from Apple already, you will need to buy it to be able to convert the VOB files most likely on the DVD: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Once you have this component and Streamclip, then you simply put the DVD into your computer's drive, open up the VOB or other file from the DVD into Streamclip and convert it to a .mov Quicktime file that FCE can use using the built-in export tools of Streamclip.
Again, this is assuming you have rights or copyright clearance to use the footage.
