Capture from Sony HVR-A1E

Hi
I have Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. I recently acquired a Sony HVR-A1E. It shoots in HDV 1080i.
I'm trying to work out how I can capture the video using FCP?
Is there an appropriate capture preset and device control preset?
For capture preset various things are listed such as HDV, DVCPRO HD 1080i50 48KHz, DVCPRO HD 1080i60 48KHz and others.
The camera connects to my Intel iMac by USB. I notice that FCP seems to list Firewire throughout its device control preset menu. Is it possible to have device control for USB?
Thank you for any assistance you can give

Hi
I've found the FireWire port
They've called it "iLink".
A bit of "googling" with "iLink" has shown me that this is commonly used on Sony Camcorders.
I have used Sony Camcorders before and but they've been hired ones and I think it has always been that the person hiring it out has pointed at the "iLink" port and called it the "FireWire" port, so I've never caught on that this different name exists.
I'm buying the right cable next...
When it is plugged in and working (touch wood) I will come back and do this "helpful" and "solved" thing.

  • Problem Capturing from Sony HVR-A1U to FCP 5 using HDV preset

    Hi,
i just got a Sony HVR-A1U and am new to HDV. I am a professional editor so i have a full understanding of FCP. Here are my problems and questions.
Specs of system : Power Mac Dual 2Ghz G5, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200 64mb (Do i need a better GFX card?)
    1) When i setup the project settings at the start I selected HDV 1080i/60, it automatically states "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware card." I am quite sure that i have all the codecs i could have without having a hardware card, since i don't have a hardware card. Does this mean that i need a blackmagic HD card or a Kona card just to process the HD into FCP as HDV 1060i/60 even though it is through firewire?
    2) I advanced to the Log & Capture mode with the HDV settings, set properly across the board. I can not see picture, can hear audio and can log clips. When i capture it captures black for video but captures the audio just fine. I figure this is because of the missing codec which encodes HDV for FCP from Sony's HDV encoding?
    3) I can capture on the fly with the Apple Intermediate Codec, no Log and Capture screen comes up, just a dialogue box that asks me to name the clip. I understand what this codec is and find that i am stuck at the moment using this until I find a way to capture the other way. Is there anyway to have the Log and Capture screen launch using this codec?
    4) I can not have pre-logged clips using other methods and then batch capture them using the Apple Intermediate Codec, it just reverts to capturing on the fly. Anyway to Batch Capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec?
Funny thing is that i can digitize fine in iMovie HD although i don't know what codec it is using. This totally baffles me that it works in a certain manner, i can get the job done, but not the way i should be able to. I've been using FCP since '99 and have never encountered something in this manner. And since this is my first experience with FCP and HDV i have nowhere to go from here except get some help or settle for what i can do and change my normal post-production workflow.
A question i really want to know about is whether i need an extra hardware compnent, i know i asked that question above, and i could understand if i did. (i.e GFX card or Capture card - even though i am going through firewire)?
I appreciate any help, i might not respond over the next couple of weeks because i am shooting in Europe and will be back stateside at the start of February, so i will not be active on this post until then. Any input would be great and when i get back i will have loads of footage that i will need to digitize, so i will be very open to help with troubleshooting as well.
    Thanks again!!!

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.
Are you guys actually reading my post??? I have given all the information that i can, settings are proper, so the post so far are completely redundant.

  • Capture from Sony HVR-Z1U

I have recently purchased a Sony Z1U and was unable to capture in FCE4. I later found out that FCE4 will only capture from the Z1U in DV mode and NOT in HDV. Why is this? Is all my HDV media useless now that I have FCE4? Should I only shoot in DV mode from now on? I also have a small Sony HRD-CX7. Will FCE4 capture from this device?
Any help for this newbie would be appreciated!

"do not connect to the computer. Connect it to the hard drive so they are on a single FireWire chain. The computer will have difficulty passing information back and forth on FW when there are multiple devices on multiple ports but on a single bus"
In theory this may be true, however my external drive only has (2) 1394b ports. My camera has (1) four pin 1394a port that converts to a six pin 1394a through the cable assembly. There is no way to chain these components together (via my external drive anyways) as far as I can see. Is this a critical issue? Should I invest in a different drive? I guess I could connect to my ED via esata using an express card. Would this approach lessen the load on the FW bus during capture and delegate a separate bus for ED control?
    Any thoughts on this?

  • FCP workflow for Sony HVR A1E

Any recommendations for a suitable workflow when capturing HD footage from a Sony HVR A1E camera onto FCP 6.0 and exporting sequence as a quicktime file. It films 1080i and is PAL.
I've had major problems with image quality, ghosting, blurred motion etc with my exported quicktime files. i can see the interlacing clearly!
    My easy setup choices were:
Format: HD, Rate: 25fps, Use: HDV 1080i50 Firewire basic.
My sequence settings are the same.
For exporting i've been simply doing 'export as quicktime file', and i've left it as current settings.
why am i getting all these probs. Ideally someone using a similar video cam can answer this.
    many thanks.

    Dear Nick
I've got the same camera and have not had any such problems.
The HVR A1e can either record audio from the external rifle mic to ch1 or to both ch1 and ch2. You need to check this setting. I think the default is to record to both channels. Let me know if this is the problem.
    good luck

  • I am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize

i am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize. I am not able to capture the content in DV mode. i am using a Firewire 800 to 400 converter and a 6 pin firewire cable to connect to the SonyHDV VTR. Please suggest me how do i do this.

The 800-400 converter plugs have proved a problem for this. What version of the software are you using. It sounds like an older version of FCP, if so you should ask your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Capturing from Sony Z 1

Can anyone tell me what I need to choose in capture presets (or elsewhere) to capture from Sony HDV Z1? I just get the picture squeezed like the persons going throw a funny mirror..!

What format are you trying to capture: HDV, SD, ProRes?
Which ever one you desire will require setting the Easy Capture settings in FCP before you try to capture. And in the case of SD you will need to set your camera to convert from HDV to SD prior to capture.

  • Can not capture from Sony HDV 1080i (recording in 60i)

    Hello
We are trying to capture from the above camera to a Mac Dual G5. We are using FinalCutPro 5.1.2. We are using a FireWire 400 cable to connect to the front of the computer (have also tryed back of Cinema Display). The footage was captured in HDV1080/60i, and we have tried the corresponding formats in Easy Setup (Basic, standard, Apple Intermediate).
The problem: we can control the camera from the Log and Capture windows, but when starting capture, no data is coming in, and the program therefor gives up after a few seconds (displaying a no data error message).
We have tried Batch and Now capture. We can log clips, and get the correct time code, but can not capture those clips due to the no data problem.

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Why is my audio is out of sync with my video on hd capture from sony camera

    My System
    Win 7 64 Bit
    Asus P5Q-E Motherboard
    4 GIGS DDR Patriot Ram
    Pentium quad 2.8
    Ati Video Card
    Onboard Audio
    CS3 Premiere And Encore
I have a Sony HVR Z series HD camera from sony.  I will capture a tape and it will be out of sync. I will then recapture and it may be in sync or not, this is really frustrating especially for music videos and weddings, actually a nightmare. I'm not quite sure as to the reason as it happens in Adobe Premiere cs3 and cs4. I have updated everything. Do you thing I need a 10000 RPM os system drive. Any help would be appreciated.
    Joan

I have 2 Sony HDR FX1 and 1 Sony HVR Z1U and it works great in both CS3 & CS4 so something is wrong with your setup or camera.
I only have a 7200 SATA drive for capture.
I dont know if a bad cable would cause this.
Harm has a couple other ways to capture that he says it keeps the audio in sync better but I have yet tried it but im sure from what I have read here that it works good.
Here is a link to his Tools Article.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/504907
Here are those 2 capture ways:
    Capture
Scenalyzer: http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html for capturing SD material
HDVSplit: http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm for capturing HDV material
    Hope this helps:  Glenn
    EDIT:
I have an 5 year old system.
On Bills PPBM4 test you can see that I scored second to LAST on speed so even my system can capture fine.

Take the test and see how your system is running.  It doesnt take to long.

  • Unable to capture from Sony HDFX1 camera

Built a new PC and utilized a top end ATI Radeon dual video card. Running Vista Ultra OS(hmmmm), plenty ram, processor, etc.
PC does not see my camera when I plug in for capture. Do I need a special codec or 1394 HD drivers available for HD capture from ATI or from Adobe perhaps?
    Frustrated

If the Vista install was a standard installation, Vista should recognize the camera automatically and install the correct drivers. Nothing you need to do. Make sure that you connect the firewire cable first between the camera and the on-board firewire connector. Do not try to connect it to the ATI card. Once the cable is connected, turn on the power on the camera and set it to VCR. Vista will then install the necessary drivers automatically and if they have been installed previously, show the autoplay box. Make sure that the menu in the camera is correctly setup to use the iLink connection and the format you shot in, so either DV or HDV. Consult the Sony manual for that. If the does not work, try a different cable first.

  • My audio gets out of sync with my video after capturing from Sony XDCAM

Everything was fine. I captured content from my Sony XDCAM, created pieces, no problem. Imported a .mov from my older FCP (5.1.4). FCP told me I needed to change my settings in order to use the .mov with my current timeline. I said OK, fine. Now, when I capture from my XDCAM some of the audio is in sync but it goes out fairly quickly. Any Ideas? I noticed in the bin the clips which are out of sync have a different data rate then the good ones. HELP!

  • Bad quality of capturing from sony SR5e.

I have used iMovie for several months. It worked quite well at first. However, in these days, problems are always appeared. Firstly, it always got rather bad quality of clips after capturing from my SONY HDR-SR5E. It seems lost some frames; all of the objects in it appears jumping when they are moving. Secondly, when I restarted the iMovie and tried to capture again, iMovie just quit unexpectedly. I have also tried using Final Cut Express to capture in my machine, it works fine and get a smooth clip comparing with iMovie.

Already try this. This is not the problem ...
It's something on the rendering of the colors. You can see that on those 2 screenshots on the image referenced in the post on my blog :

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Windows Movie Maker - unable to capture from sony handycam

I am using Sony Handycam DCR-HC2 camcoder and my laptop is sony vaio vgn-nr160e. Before upgrading to windows 7, I was able to capture home made movie with Click to DVD program via i-link cable with vista home.
From the time I update to Windows 7, I am unable to capture home movies. Presently I am using windows movie maker 2.6. When I connect my handycam to laptop with i-link, it won't reconize.
Please some one guide me, we are planning a 2 week vacation and I am going crazy with this issued ( I am an avg tech guy, not a expt)

    I have
    Windows 7 RC
    Sony handycam DCR-TRV19
    Sony iLink cable
    Full Windows Live package installed
    and have had similar results.
With the Sony cable (verses a 4 pin to 4 pin cable) I do get DV IN on the camera when I connect.
But in device manager it does not show up under IEEE or as an Image Device :-(
That's as far as I have gotten. Hoping someone can find the little nugget to get this going.

Premiere Elements does not find the device (SONY DCR-TRV120E PAL), although it is recognized in "Devices and Printers" as "AV/C Subunit / Sony DV Camcorder" (WIN 7) and the device is also recognized and capturing correctly under MS Movie Maker.
    Thanks for any helpful advice!

    Thanks for the reply.
Hope you can use the workarounds suggested in the Adobe document.
Are you within 30 days of purchase from Adobe direct on this one? If so, you can seek a refund/money back from Adobe.
If you purchased from an authorized reseller, then you have to deal with the seller according to the sellers return/refund policy.
If an Adobe online purchase, then Adobe Chat Orders should be able to take care of the refund details.

  • Jerky panning 5D vs. HVR-A1E

I have searched across the forum but cannot see anything that specifically relates to this.  I hope someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
I have two cmeras: Sony HVR-A1E and Canon 5D mkII.  I have shot a fair bit of video with both.  I have processed both in PP CS3 and CS4 - the problem occurs in both.
    The workflow is PAL:
Sony - upload (either down convert to SD or not as required) into default format generated by upload (I think MPEG2).
Canon - upload then convert with Media Encoder to P2 format (with whatever codec it chooses)
Both are now 1080 frame size and 25fps, as is the project.
I can edit both equally and the content looks like similar quality, apart from some obvious camera differences.  However, in editing there is a distinct difference between a pan or zoom in both cameras.  The Sony produces smooth pans and zooms, the Canon produces jerky ones.  Wondering if this was just apparent in the editing phase I created both a Flash movie and DVD from the footage, but the difference was still apparent.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Stuart

    Sony - uploadCanon - upload
As a point of interest, 'upload' means to transfer from a local computer to a remote computer, such as an Internet server.  The proper terms here would be 'capture' for tape based media, and simply 'copy' or 'transfer' for solid state media.
