Capture HDV 720p on ATA 100 HDD ?

Hello,
I have to capture HDV 720p/25fps footage on a Windows machine and I was thinking to use an ATA 100 hard disk.
There should be no problem since the hard disk is 7200rpm (as required in the system requirements of Premiere CS3) but I would like to hear the opinion of somebody who already used such a hard disk (or similar) for capturing.
Thank you all,
Alessandro
PS: since I don't have a capture card I intend to use the firewire port of the motherboard.

That is how it is designed to work.

Would it be possible to install a 120GB ATA-100?

    Hi
The problem is that you will not find any official information about the HDD size limitation on the Toshiba notebooks.
Such infos dont exist. I didnt find it on the Toshiba page.
    I found this thread in the Toshiba forum;
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=71877&#71877
An user has suggested that the 30GB, 40GB, 60GB or 80GB HDD could be compatible.
The other user from this thread has already use an 160GB HDD in the Satellite A20-S103

So maybe you are a lucky man and the 120GB HDD will run.

The IDE port belongs to the Marvell Controller.  There are no special Marvell drivers available.
sjosidan, which drivers did you try to integrate at the beginning of Windows Setup (F6+Floppy).  If you have a P35 Neo - board (MS-7360 PCB v1.0) there is no need to integrate any drivers during setup.  In this sense, every driver you try to integrate is the wrong driver.
I know you said, that the problem is the same with Windows XP and Linux.  However, let's focus on Windows XP for now when it comes to OS Installation.
Does the XP Install-CD you are using include Service Pack 2?
Which BIOS-Version are you currently using? (It should be displayed on the POST Screen (A7360IMS v1.??))
    The Bios version is 1.1.0.
I dont have a sp2 disc Ive read some similar posts on the forum and I think it will work with the sp2 disc.
During my reading on this forum I've come to the conclusion that in order to install a linux system supporting IDE I first have to install Xp sp2 and then flash bios. Before installing a linux dist. Is this correct?
I ordered a new SATA disc yesterday it arrives tomorrow so then I won't have a problem, I'll be using the IDE disc in my server instead.

  • Suggestion for capture(hdv 720p, 30)

    Dear All,
Just a "cheap" work around for the capture issue for JVC HD100; simply ask your cameraman roll for another 5"~10" before and after, then In FCP do not capture entire tape, believe me even u enable the break new clips function there are at least 4 seconds missing on each "break new Clips". Mark each of you desire clips, I know it's hard & extra time is needed, if u are able to mark the in out points on location, it will speed up....
    Cheers/Daryl

That is how it is designed to work.

  • ATA-100

Hi we have a home security camara system that's records onto a ATA-100 HDD. When I plug in the interface between the unit and the mac, via a USB cable a dialogue box comes up with not recognise. How can I capture the information ? I tried using i move but couldn't detect it ! ?
    Thank you

Your question has nothing to do with video production as it relates the Apple's Pro Video Applications. I suggest contacting the manufacturer to see if the device is even compatible with Mac computers. Most likely the hard drive is formatted in such a way that Mac's cannot read or write to the drive.

  • Turning off DV start/stop when capturing HDV

I am trying to figure out how to capture from my camera that shoots HDV. when I capture, FCP divides every cut into a new clip. I would like to turn this off. I unchecked the box that says "make new clip at start/stop" but I still get the divided clips. I heard there is a way to turn this with the new version. I am capturing HDV 720p
    Thanks,
    Johnny

There is no fix. That is the nature of HDV. Every time the camera is started and stopped, the camera creates a new clip. That is because HDv records in a long GOP (group of pictures) structure, and when you stop the camera, the structure is broken...FCP detects this and creates a new clip.
    But so to other NLEs...

  • Sata = Ata 100??

everest tells me that my SATA HDD is a ATA 100 hdd.. shouldnt it be SATA 150?

    No nothing is wrong .
Just thought that maybe everest picked up that your drive is a pata drive with a sata converter in it .
    Native sata drive :
    [Mobo sata controller] ---satacable----[Hd(controller)---- SATA-signalling---platters]
    Not native sata drive :
    [Mobo sata controller] ---satacable----[Hd(controller)----satatopataconverter--- PATA-signalling---platters]
All my maxtors satas have this converter (from marvell) .
    A seagate 7200.7 i have has no converter .

A:Yes, the HDD will not run in UATA/100 mode but instead is a slower compatible

You mean, that it is during detection of ATA-devices computer powers off? If that should happen, I would never use a WD disk on this system. Halting is one thing, but powering off like that is unknown to me. Seems dangerous, if it is true.
yep its possible, can personaly confirm it.
"I would never use a WD disk on this system"
well dont worry about that, that happends with old WD HDD's only. WD is still TOP brand. like you probably know good brands has bad times sometimes, like IBM before they was buyed by HITACHI( 1st revision of IBM Desktar series). Quantum(Maxtor at thease days) has pretty malfuction series also like 1st SE series, MAXTOR with flat series lots of defective also, Seagate also with 7200.7 2nd revision IDE 80GB models lots of defectives(43 of them caput for 3 moutns personally happend to object where im support still remember numbers.....) and so on... every brand has their bad moments.

I have a 250W PSU and don't believe that just replacing the Fujitsu by the Western Digital drive could cause a power problem. I just have a floppy, HDD, CD-RW and a PCI graphics card on the motherboard.
The system works fine with the Fujitsu drive.
The Western Digital drive is not faulty - it works fine in another machine.
I'm inclined to go with the theory about ATA66 - hope someone can provide the Ultra ATA Management utility!
Any further ideas are very welcome.

random instant unexpected power offs are caused by either an overheating CPU or an overloaded PSU
yep in most of cases yes, but dont think PSU overload can be coused by replacing Fudjitsu HDD with WD HDD.
he also dont have "random" shutoff" his shutdown is always at same place when HDD is began detected(not random).
about overheating CPU also cant be.. CPU is at full load at post??? and overheating but this happend only with WD HDD and PC shutdown?(dont think so) dont forgot all is alright with other HDD Fudjitsu HDD. if it is CPU heating or PSU should happend with other HDD(Fudjitsu) also not only with WD HDD.

  • DVHSCap to Capture HDV VIdeo

FCP does not support the JVC GR-HD1U but I have found that people have been successful capturing the video through Apple's DVHSCap then converting the data to .m2t transport files using MPEG Streamclip (I will post what I read below). I have downloaded DVHSCap but cannot figure out how to capture the vide from my camcorder. If anyone is familiar with DVHSCap I would very much appreciate some advice. Thank you all very much for your time!

    [/ QUOTE ]
Apple and FCP 4.5 do not yet officially support JVC's HDV camcorders.
However, I have had very good results, over the past year, using Apple Development software to capture HDV files from my GR-HD1U. Then using free-ware software to convert the resulting .m2t transport files to QuickTime .mov files. I then drop the QT.mov files into an FCP bin and edit as usual using FCP.
I use Apple's DVHSCap application to capture HDV camcorder data tapes via firewire and convert the data to .m2t transport files. DVHSCap (for Panther) can be obtained by going to:
    www.apple.com/firewire/
click on 'FireWire SDK 19 for Mac OS X (Download)
double click XFireWireSDK19e.pkg (to install the SDK)
DVHSCap (and similar VirtualDVHS) can be found in
    /Developer/FireWireSDK19/Applications/
I also use a freeware program 'MPEG Streamclip 1.0.1', which is available from:
    http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
    I use MPEG Streamclip to:
    1) Locate clips of interest and set their 'in' and 'out' points,
    2) Set the, optional, number of 'bad lines' to crop from the sides and top of each frame,
    3) Re-scale, if desired, to 720p or 1080p,
    4) Export to QuickTime...
    5) Drop the resulting QT.mov file, which contains synced 'video and audio' data, into an FCP bin.

I don't have experience with your JVC format or deck but here is something you may want to read.

*capturing HDV footage, Final Cut Pro does not preview video or audio in the Log and*

I realize you have 5.1 but read this entire section on HDV, it could help.

  • Sequence settings for HDV 720p 24 fps

Okay, now that the French is gone I'm back on track, but still confused. I've captured my HDV 720p @ 24FPS footage using LumiereHD & it's separated & ready to go. What sequence settings/editing timebase should I use? I've noted people here saying DVCPro, but others said DVCPro is just problemic/not correct for HDV . . . and the Lumiere forum reccomends using the Apple Intermediate Codec, which I think people here said NOT to do . . . and there's a 720p24 option in Lumiere, but not in FCP . . . is it just like using 24p DV where you edit at regular 29.97? My head is turing into goo. Any sage advice, O sage ones? And I'm finishing on DVD, if that's usefull. Thank you!!!

Don't stay nervous for ever, you're missing out on a lot of good stuff.
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. update to OS X 10.4.8
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    3. update QuickTime to 7.1.3
    4. make sure you have Motion 2.1 already installed
    5. update all your pro apps with Software Update
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/whats_new_5.1.2balis.html
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3213777
    Still nervous?
I can't tell you what setting in FCP 5.1 to use, because I no longer have 5.1.
I would convert the HDV to DVC PRO HD 720p.
Editing in native HDV is a pain because of the frame structure.
You will end up with larger files with DVC PRO HD, but since it's all "I-frames" editing and compositing will be much, much faster.

    Captured video looks:
full of orizontal lines (that look like scan lines) expecially evident on figure edges and on motion subjects
    and
like it was resized 1440x1080i from a different lower resolution
    video is exported with compressor
    MPEG-2 3.7Mbps 2-pass 16:9
Description: Fits up to 150 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 120 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5

  • New Hard Drive ATA-5, ATA-6, ATA-10, ATA-66, ATA-100, ATA-133!!!!!!

I am looking on ebay to pick up a new/second hand hard drive for my Pismo 400Mhz.
I going to go for a 60-120GB harddrive and am going to settle for a 5400speed.
    So I know i'm looking for :
    60-120GB
    2.5"x1/8 H
    IDE ATA or PATA
BUT if I go for the ATA option what ATA do I need?
    ATA-5, ATA-6, ATA-10, ATA-66, ATA-100, ATA-133?
An I right in thinking it can only ba ATA-5 or ATA-6?

    Bluefusion:
You need an 2.5" ATA Hard Disk Drive. It is sometimes referred to as (P)ATA or ATA/IDE. Serial ATA (SATA) drives are not supported by PowerPC Macs. Maximum capacity supported by the Pismo is 120 GB.
Here is a list of available HDDs for your computer at OWC. Many users suggest avoiding Toshiba and Fujitsu HDDs. Seagates are highly user rated, have a 5 year warranty, but cost a bit more in general.
    Good luck.

  • Capturing HDV without Timecode

I am using a JVC HD110 U capturing in HDV at 720p 24. For some reason, even though the timecodes are consecutive, Final Cut Studio is registering timecode breaks. Some of these are on cuts, but others are in the middle of takes.
I know that if it were DV I could set the device to non-controllable and capture without timecode, but in HDV it won't let me set the device control to non-controllable.
Is there anyway that I can capture HDV and ignore the time code on the tape?
    Thanks much,
    J. Cameron Brueckner

Depending on that setting I either get the capture to stop in the middle or it continues and create a new clip. If I let it run, I loose a few seconds in the middle of the take. If I set the preroll to 1 sec, I can get the lost time down to 3 sec, but since it happens in the middle of takes not just at cuts, it is still a problem that I am loosing 3 seconds (2 while it searches for media and 1 for preroll).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks much.

  • Error Code 2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-Master

    Hello,
I've been working with my ailing eMac G4 for a couple weeks now. Nothing is working. When I run Quick Test on the Apple Hardware Test (after booting off the Install and Restore Disk) I get an "everything is fine" message. Then, when I run the extended test, I get the following error code: 2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-Master.
Does anyone know what this means?
    Thanks.

  • HDV 720p 25 codec

Can any one please tell me when are we going to have the codec for the HDV 720p 25, I mean the one used by JVC.
I've benn waiting for this codec for 3 months now and it seems that there isn't any. Does this mean that I cannot use my JVC camera on FCP?

You can use that footage, but it requires a bit more equipment.
Either use Lumiere HD or HDVxDV to convert it and lose timecode information, or get the JVC BR-HD50U deck, an HD capture card and external SATA Raid and capture the footage at DVCPRO HD resolution.
NO support for the JVC other than 720p30 natively.
