Capture HDV directly to Powerbook

I would like to capture on set with a powerbook from a JVC HD 100. I have set the video settings on HDV for capture and device control. I see the image on the log and capture window BUT if i hit the "now" button, it just capture one frame and that's it. Are my settings wrong? What can i do?
Also i really would like to capture directly to prores but when i select the HDV-Prores in the capture setting, it doesn't work.
Any help is welcome.

There are some much-discussed issues with JVC HDV and Final Cut; it doesn't always work the way it's supposed to, and it often seems to vary from one individual system to another. I, personally, can only get my JVC HDV to capture properly about 20% of the time. I have scoured the forum for answers, and have set capture and device control to every possible combination. Sometimes different ones work, there's no rhyme or reason to it.
I highly recommend using Quicktime Pro to capture live video from your camera. If you set the QT video recording prefs to your camera (which it will see if you are powered up and plugged into Firewire) and set quality to 'Native' resolution, it will detect what it's getting and capture straight HDV, which you can then convert to Pro Res or anything else for editing.

  • DVHSCap to Capture HDV VIdeo

FCP does not support the JVC GR-HD1U but I have found that people have been successful capturing the video through Apple's DVHSCap then converting the data to .m2t transport files using MPEG Streamclip (I will post what I read below). I have downloaded DVHSCap but cannot figure out how to capture the vide from my camcorder. If anyone is familiar with DVHSCap I would very much appreciate some advice. Thank you all very much for your time!

Apple and FCP 4.5 do not yet officially support JVC's HDV camcorders.
However, I have had very good results, over the past year, using Apple Development software to capture HDV files from my GR-HD1U. Then using free-ware software to convert the resulting .m2t transport files to QuickTime .mov files. I then drop the QT.mov files into an FCP bin and edit as usual using FCP.
I use Apple's DVHSCap application to capture HDV camcorder data tapes via firewire and convert the data to .m2t transport files. DVHSCap (for Panther) can be obtained by going to:
    www.apple.com/firewire/
click on 'FireWire SDK 19 for Mac OS X (Download)
double click XFireWireSDK19e.pkg (to install the SDK)
DVHSCap (and similar VirtualDVHS) can be found in
    /Developer/FireWireSDK19/Applications/
I also use a freeware program 'MPEG Streamclip 1.0.1', which is available from:
    http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
    I use MPEG Streamclip to:
    1) Locate clips of interest and set their 'in' and 'out' points,
    2) Set the, optional, number of 'bad lines' to crop from the sides and top of each frame,
    3) Re-scale, if desired, to 720p or 1080p,
    4) Export to QuickTime...
    5) Drop the resulting QT.mov file, which contains synced 'video and audio' data, into an FCP bin.

I don't have experience with your JVC format or deck but here is something you may want to read.

  • PP CS4 won't capture HDV or import m2t files

    MacbookPro, OSX 10.6.4
I haven't done a video project for a couple of months, and everything was working then.
But now, I can't import HDV footage captured by OnLocation (.m2t) ("format not supported"), or capture it directly from my video camera (Sony HVR-A1U). There are also no sequence presets for HDV video.
When I try capturing from the camera, my MacbookPro's webcam shows in the previewer, although the controls in the capture window do control the camera (play, stop, rewind etc.). If I go into the capture Settings, no firewire sources are shown.
I can capture HDV from the camera using iMovie (to Quicktime format). In some respects, that is better, since it does HDV scene detection (unlike PP CS4), saving me a little work. But iMovie won't import m2t either so I'll have to find some other way to convert if for use by PP.
I tried reinstalling PP from disks but to no effect. Before I try full unininstall and reinstall , I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has ideas about what is going on with PP.

    >no sequence presets for HDV
I don't know if this applys to Mac or not, but I have seen messages saying that PPro will, for some unknown reason, sometimes revert to demo status... which only supports SD video, and nothing that requires any flavor of MPEG

  • Problem Capturing HDV

I have been capturing HDV on two different Sony HC1's for the past year. Now whenever I try to capture anything using Capture Now, no files get added to my browser and when it hits the end of the tape or the end of the recorded portion of the tape the file appears for maybe 1/10th of a second and disappears.
If I hit the escape key when capturing now, Final Cut saves the current clip ONLY that it has been recording since the previous break. So if I have ten clips to capture right now I have to manually capture each one using capture now and hitting escape just before that clip ends otherwise the computer erases that clip.
Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong with MY CAPTURE now feature. Please do not suggest logging clips and capturing for now...thank you-

WOWOWOOWOW!!! How can I thank you enough. Your trouble shooting I think led me directly (in 5 minutes) to the answer. I spent 10 hours last night on this...wow, in 5 minutes you led me to salvation!
    Here's what happened!
I did what you said and created a new user account with full administrative control over the computer and all applications, etc.. I started up FCP and when I went to change the setting for the scratch disk it would not let me pick my Video RAID drive. Then I tried to pick my 2nd internal drive and no such luck. It gave me some message that it is unable to set the scratch disk because the drive is either write protected or non writable media.
I did an Option I on both hard disks and checked the box at the bottom that says ignore owernship on this volume and voila...it all worked. I came back to my main account and did opened up FCP and again Capture now works fine.
The only weird thing is, on my main log in account, FCP WOULD allow me to set my scratch disk as my video RAID....it was only on my other account that I got the pop up window not allowing that. Do you know why that is? Do you think I have solved the issue.
I've just tested a few clips and so far it all works well. I will keep my fingers crossed...that was a strange one and your anwer I never would have suspected!
By the way I've heard for video 32, 64 and 128 work fine on RAID...I choose 64 as an inbtween number for the RAID block size. On my speed tests they were all pretty close.

  • Capturing HDV and DV

I have successfully captured HDV footage I filmed on my camera, but now I am trying to capture DV footage shot on a different camera and only the video portion will capture.
There is audio on the DV tape and when I play it directly from the camera I can hear it, but it just doesn't come across to FCP like it does when I captured the HDV tape.
Can you offer any suggestions on how I can capture the DV video/audio?
    Many thanks!

Make sure the audio check box is checked in the Clip Setting tab. And try changing the device control to another NTSC firewire setting in the Capture Setting tab. (NTSC Firewire Basic)
What camera or deck are you using? IF this is an HDV device make sure you properly reset the firewire to DV.

  • Capturing HDV as H.264

IM using fcp 6 on a Mac book pro I’ve been asked to capture 2 HDV tapes as H.264. Do I do this in the capture settings of fcp or do I have to use compressor to convert to it?.
    Thanks for any help.

I was wondering if theres a way of capturing HDV as H.264?
I have never tried it. On the few occasions that I worked with HDV, it was for editing and was converted to ProRes. Final Cut Pro does not really like H.264 anyway, you will probably have to render it as well.
You might consider trying QuickTime Player's "New Movie Recording" function under the File menu bar item which gives you the option of capturing the native format of your footage or directly as H.264. If it works (I never tried that with HDV either) you won't have to do any conversion at all in Compressor.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).

  • FCP 5.0 crash when trying to capture HDV. Happens since running  w LEOPARD

I migrated FCS from a G5 1.8 GHz powerPC to a Mac Pro Intel 2.66 GHz. Also I upgraded to Leopard. Now when I set FCP to capture HDV, it quits unexpectedly when I try launch the log and capture tool.
The same thing is happening with FCP in the G5, however, this doesn't happens when I try to capture other formats.
Also when I try to work with HDV media that was captured before the migration (the media is in an external La Cie HD) FCP works slowly and the canvas is green. This is happening in both the Mac Pro and the G5.
In the Mac Pro I have set Quicktime to Rosetta hoping to solve the problem but it persist.
With the G5 I have never had a problem to capture HDV until now that I have done the migration and have upgraded to Leopard.
Have already reinstalled FCS, trashed FCP preferences... What else can I do ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Was your install of Leopard clean? i.e. did you erase a disk and reinstall from the ground up? If not that's probably what needs to happen...

  • HELP! No longer able to capture HDV in FCP 6

I had a seamless FCP workflow using my Canon XH-A1 and FCP 6. I always connect my camera and power it up first before starting FCP. My settings were perfect, then about a week and a half ago FCP would no longer capture HDV from the camera. I tried redoing the easy setups: HDV > HDV:1080i60. Then I tried all the other variations. I tried trashing the preferences and restarting my computer and all that. Then I tried to see if Toast 10 would recognize the HDV camera to capture... no. But all works fine when set to DV mode. Everything about this situation seemed to have pointed to the fault being with my camera, so I sent it off to canon to check it out ($$$). Today I borrowed a friends Sony HDV that has worked fine before and it too failed. FCP is not recognizing the HDV camera. In an act of desperation, I installed iMovie and opened it up, I connected the camera... wth, it works!?! I am now convinced that there is something not right with FCP. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

I figured out the problem!!! It was "Rosetta". Hopefully this issue will help someone else in the future!
When I upgraded to Intel Mac Pro from G5, many plugins were not supported. About a month and a half ago I opened an older project of mine and had problems rendering some vital sequences with several plugins from the G5. After going through every plugin I had and reinstalling them one by one, many plugins still would not work. My solution was to use Rosetta with FCP...
I had not captured any HDV media since turning Rosetta on for FCP, and I guess forgot it was even on. I clicked on the FCP App and hit "command + i" for info, unchecked Rosetta, and instantly my HDV is capturing perfect again!
I wish I could use an abundance of prolific and explicit vocabulary words to express knuckleheadedness of my inability to not figure this out sooner...
ROSETTA was the CULPRIT of this issue!

  • Can't capture HDV from Sony z1 on FCP 7

    Hi,
I have set 'easy setup' to HDV (I have also tried HDV Fire wire basic) I've followed tutorial on all the set ups to capture.  But when I go to capture, FCP can control the play buttons and I can see the time code on screen but there is no picture or sound coming through to capture and is says 'Capture was aborted due to no incoming data from device'.
    I have checked everything.
I followed all the suggestions in an older discussion in this forum -
Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1
This was the last post in that discussion:
"Re: Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1
May 23, 2010 4:37 PM (in response to MrMajesticMole)
I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now."
I followed all these tips and nothing has changed.  This is the first time I am using HDV in FCP.  I have used the same Sony z1 camera to shoot and capture DV footage in my current FCP set up and I've had no problems.
The only wierd thing is that under easy set up I selected HDV first with 'all rates' under frame rate.  When that didn't work I tried "HDV fire wire basic".  Then I tried to put the frame rate in a 50fps.  When nothing made any difference I put the frame rate back to all frame rates and while still on Format: HDV selected HDV 1080i50  and also have tried HDV 1080i50 with 'all frame rates' and everythime I go back, it's defaulted to  'HDV 720p50' in the 'use box and frame rate  50fps.
I would really appreciate help with this.

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for getting back so quickly.
I was feeling hopeful because I realised I had the fps rate set to 50 and when you said 25fps I thought that must be it.  Unfortunatly it hasn't worked at all.  It keeps saying there's no data incoming data from device, yet it acknowledges the timecode and I can control the camera from FCP.
I double checked my settings and made sure the camera was on before launching FCP.  I am going to study the document you included to see if there is anything else I am doing that isn't working.  I am wondering if there are some audio settings mucking it up.
If you have any other thoughts let me know.  I will let you know if I figure it out.
    Cheers,
    Carolyn

  • Trying to capture HDV with a Canon HV30    CS4

I am new to this HD video.Im trying to capture to PPRO cs4 and not sure what settings to use. When I first start out I have my new project set to HDV after that it takes me to new sequence panel there I have selected the preset HDV 1080p30 (Im hoping this is correct) after this I go to the capture panel there I select where to put the video and I also select HDV.When I try to capture the video does not show on the PPRO preview screen but it does capture the video and run the camera from there. The camera is set to HDV output and while its capturing it shows a fire wire symbol on the camera screen and says something like HDV out
Just like to know if Im doing everything correct.'
    Thanks for your time

Had you read the manual or help file on capturing HDV, you would have seen that there is no preview during capture with HDV material. I suggest you read the manual from front to cover to get acquainted with this program and watch tutorials. It will make your editing experience much nicer.

  • "no data from device" when trying to capture HDV

I need to capture additional footage for an HDV project I am already editing. Capturing the initial footage (about a month ago) went smoothly. Now however, when trying to capture footage from a new tape shot just last week, I simply cannot. If I try to Capture Now, I get a "No Data from Device" message and the capture attempt aborts. If I log some clips and Batch Capture, the material cues and begins to play but the capture window just continues to say CUEING SOURCE MATERIAL and captures nothing. I am using the Sony HVR-M10U deck as a capture device.
The only thing that has changed between the original capture and this latest attempt is that I have also been working on a DV project at the same time, and I used the M10U to capture some DV footage for that project. In order to succesfully capture DV footage I had to force the deck to play only DV (by changing the VCR settings in the menu).
To try and capture this latest HDV footage, I went back into the menu and forced the deck to play HDV only. In searching for answers I came across this Apple article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407) and followed those exact steps.
However, nothing seems to work. I do have device control and the timecode is being read off the deck in Log & Capture (so the firewire connection is fine), but there's no video in the preview window and no capturing is possible. I am able to open my DV project, reset the menu on the deck, and capture DV footage - but I can't for the life of me switch to capturing HDV footage.
Any bright ideas would be much appreciated - I'm really at wits end.
    thanks,
    Tom

I am having a similar problem with my sony HVRZ1U, I can capture dv through firewire no problem but when I choose easy setup for HDV it does not recognize the device.
Funny thing is I tried to download clips on a pc in Premiere with all the similar settings on my camera and it works fine, I have deck control and can capture HDV footage, so that rules out a problem with the camera. Back to FCP5 with the same settings and nothing.
Went through uninstalling quicktime 7.03 back to 7.01 - nothing
Deleted the preferences in FCP5 - nothing
Checked the firewire connections and cables - they work fine
Using all the right settings on the camera and in FCP5
The tape format was shot correctly
Any light on what could be going wrong would be very very much appreciated

  • Capturing HDV from Canon XH-A1

Hi, I'm new to the Canon XH-A1 and it seems there are a lot of questions out there about capturing HDV footage to FCE... So I'm going to add one more and see if anyone can help me out!
    I keep getting this message:
"Capture Presets must have a video or and audio digitizer set to capture. Please change to the desired preset in the Audio/Video Settings."
I can't seem to find out how to do this on my own, and I feel like I am missing an elusive, yet simple, step in the process.
    Using MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz
    Final Cut Express 4
4 pin to 9 pin Firewire
    Canon XH-A1
Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    Easy Set-Up is set to:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
Canon XH-A1 is set to HDV 60i
I tried setting it to HDV-AIC 1080i60 but then the message is that the hdv deck isn't connected at all. So I tried the AVCHD setting and that led to the other message about A/V settings.
