Capture isn't capturing what's on tape, need fast reply please!

I've been working on this wedding project that was suppose to be done last week, but things got complicated, and now i noticed that all the material i have captureda big part of it is missing, so i checked was it on tape and yes it's fine there but not on my hard drive, apparently there was a timecode break and now i have edited for two weeks without noticing the missing material... this really *****
Anyway I'm using Capture Now function in FCP and my camera is a JVC GY-HD101E, im trying to re-capture now and it keeps making these short clips of just a few seconds and cutting most of the material where there is no start/stop in Rec...
Might i have some setting that i overlooked ?
I have noticed this happening before to my footage but because it only clipped about 2 seconds off of some shot i wasnt sure if it was just a random error...

iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

If I want to keep the quality of the original captured footage(from the tapes),what format should I?

I captured canon hv20 by firewire to my computer with adobe premiere elements 11. After capture, I have cutted clip three times. Then I want to export my computer because of I watch on my 46 inches full hd lcd television. If I want to keep the quality of the original captured footage (from the tapes), what format should I? I choosen mpeg 1440x1080i 24, it alerts error. Or i chosee avchd 1920x1080p, then it is too larger than captured scenes. I think it is 20000MB but captured scened (without cut) only 11.2 gb. Please help me. Thanks very much.

File size and Bitrate and Quality are interrelated. From what I have read, the bitrate for your HDV footage from the PAL Canon HV20 camcorder should be about 25 Mbps (megabits per second). If you did a HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements, you should MPEG2.mpg file on the Timeline.

using Presets = MPEG2 1440 x 1080i25, did you make any changes in the settings under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the preset?
When you look at the settings in the Export Settings dialog for the MPEG 1440 x 1080i25 preset, you will see the default bitrate settings
Minimum = 18 Mbps
Target = 25 Mbps
Maximum = 30 Mbps
The program's export bitrate may be higher than that of your source media, resulting in the increased file size. You can check out the bitrate, using the properties readout from a free program such a MediaInfo

You could experiment with different bitrate, trying to maintain the quality as you decrease the maximum bitrate from 30 Mbps downward to reduce the file size.
The file extension of your export should be .m2t, .mpg. So, your export is MPEG2.m2t. I find that that type of file will playback in Windows Media Player, but not QuickTime (latest version). This particular export would be the closest to the source media properties.
But, right now I would try to perfect the MPEG2 1440 x 1080i25, experimenting with the bitrate to bring the file size into line with the source file and still maintain video quality. The AVCHD.mp4 suggested by Ann Bens is a prime candidate quality wise. If size becomes a factor, you might want to explore a 1920 x 1080i25 or 1440 x 1080i25 Windows Media Video 9.wmv file which we can discuss in more detail depending on how things are going.

DVCPRO capture issues - FCP or tape issue ?

Can anyone help me rule out whether this is a tape issue or a problem with my system ?
Trying to capture from DVC PRO tapes - problem is I don't know if they are DVC PRO 25 , DVC PRO 50, or HD
(we inherited these tapes from another company, who shot them but is not being forthcoming about how they shot...)
I have a Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck hooked up to Final Cut 5.1.4 via 6pin firewire (G5)
I start playing tape with regular DV NTSC settings in Log & Capture, timecode seems to be rolling continuously, the deck display says i is DVC PRO 50 - then I hit Capture Now and I get a freeze frame, and an error message :
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted.
So is it the tape ?
The weird thing is I was able to capture up to about 10 min of the first tape.
Even when playing back, something changes on the tape at about 10 min - but what ? Timecode is continuous - what coudl change and make it uncapturable ?.

Did you choose the proper Easy Setup? You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage, so FCP knows what sort of signal to expect. If you try capturing DVCPRO 50 as DV/NTSC, then you would get this error.

2. I have a few old Hi8 cameras. Is there any value to these things? Can they be used for anything -- a web cam? Or are they pretty much just a waste of space?

You need some way to capture - DV deck, DV converter, capture card, etc... The Digital Hi8 cameras/decks allowed capture from Hi8 tapes. If you have a capture card/deck, you can play back the Hi8 thru it and capture the analog signal that way...

Is it possible to capture an entire DV tape into a single .avi

I am capturing DV tapes and even if I uncheck the "split scenes" option in the capture window, PE7 still splits the scenes into many .avi files.

Have you performed a reset? Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off button for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons and await restart.

You've checked the name and address on your iTunes account and it's in exactly the same format (including spacing and layout) as the credit card that you are trying to use is registered to ? And the card was issued by a bank in the country where you and your iTunes account are ?
