Capture live HDMI video from Nikon D800 (cable-only tethering possible?)

I want to import the full/uncompressed video directly from my Nikon D800 to my MacBook Pro "Retina" ("tethered" via cable) but without an intermediate "gadget" to ultimately edit in Final Cut Pro X.
Is this possible?
(And if so) Is there such a cable and where can it be acquired?
What I know so far:
The HDMI port on the MacBook Pro "Retina" is output only.
The mini-HDMI port on the Nikon D800 will output full/uncompressed video with all storage cards removed (and with proper settings).
It is theoretically possible via a mini-HDMI to Thunderbolt (not DisplayPort) cable--if it exists.
It is theoretically possible via a mini-HDMI to USB cable.
It is definitely possible to do this with a Ninja 2 video recorder or other "gadget."
Professionals out there? I'm listening and please respond constructively.
Much thanks.

"Also, I was talking about the entertainment industry where I know many editors and houses that have jumped ship back to AVID and even...Premiere?"  All do respect, but to avoid a debate, don't start one without the facts.
Again, I work in those markets, and no, the numbers and facts don't add up to a mass exodus.  The facts show they are all sticking with FCP 7 for now.  Yet, more and more are moving to X, factually.  FCP X is a "pro workflow".  FCPX is as professional as any other on the market.  Have you seen the "In Action" page?  I guess Tsui Hark isn't Hollywood or professional?
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/in-action/
I live in the third largest film market in the US, more and more production companies are moving to X.  Some are going to PPro and MC, but not all.  There is no factual evidence even a majory are leaving, the facts simply aren't there to claim that.  So there no debate, just facts.
The issue here exists for most NLE's, too, not just FCP 7 or X.  Tape is becoming more and more rare.  Most entertainment industry is now tapeless.
If you want live production, I'd look at a live production package, not an NLE.

  • Photoshop CC not allowing JPEG import from Nikon D800 - Photoshop CS6 worked fine.

When inporting JPEG from Nikon D800 nothing happens - screen remains blank.
Went back to my provious version (Photoshop CS6) and it worked fine.

Curt Y gave you some good advice.
Remove your memory card from the camera and plug it into a card reader.
Drag/copy the files from the memory card to your hard drive.
Eject your card from the card reader and reinsert into camera.
Then open the files from the hard drive.
It is not a good idea to open/work on files on the memory card, while either in the camera or the card reader.
Yes, you may have done this differently in the past, but it is much SAFER to work on the files after they have been moved to your hard drive.
Please try the above proceduce and report back if you are still having issues.

The D800 is supported in Camera Raw 7.1 and higher
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
CS5 is not compatible with Camera Raw 7 and higher. You need CS6 (paid for upgrade or join the Adobe Cloud).

Or stay with CS5 and use the free DNG converter to convert all D800 Raw files to DNG then edit the DNGs in Bridge and Photoshop

  • Unable to open Raw files from Nikon D800 in Photoshop CC [was:raw updates with creative cloud?]

i have a d800, bridge or photoshop do not seem to support the raw files, i am using CC and bridge will not bring up the thumbnails and photoshop will not open the files at all, can anyone help?

[Moved from Cloud forum to Camera Raw forum]
    ACR = Adobe Camera Raw.
ACR is the plugin used by Photoshop to read and process Raw files from cameras. It must be updated every time a new camera comes on to the market.
The Nikon D800 has been fully supported since ACR7.1
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
ACR7.1 is compatible with Photoshop CS6 and later
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
So, if you are in fact using Photoshop CC, there should be no reason that Raw files cannot be opened.
    In Photoshop, click:
Windows: Help > About Plug-In > Camera Raw
Mac: Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw
    Which version number is shown?
Are you using Nikon transfer software to get the Raw files from your camera to your computer?

  • How can I capture live HD video direct to hard drive?

    Hello,
My goal is to be able to capture 1080p video from a camcorder direct to the hard drive of a mac. Space is a concern, so ideally this would capture directly to a Mac Mini, but if the only option is to upgrade to a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro (for Thunderbolt), I may be able to work with that. What I know about so far are the offerings from Black Magic:
    1) The H.264 pro recorder: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/h264prorecorder/
    2) and the Ultra Studio 3D: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/ultrastudio3d/
With the first option, I'm worried about the quality. Ultra Studio 3D is very expensive ($1000) and would require upgrading to a MacBook Pro for Thunderbolt, but I'm open to that if it is the only way to get full 1080p quality.
I also have read about an app in the Firewire SDK called DHS cap. I haven't been able to try this since the cameras I have access do not have Firewire, but if people have had success with that, then I can purchase a camera that can connect through Firewire.
The last thing I've read about is Capture Magic HD. I would like to test this as well, but it appears the developers are out of business (their website is down), and i cannot find the software anywhere.
Any advice about the best way to go about this would be greatly appreciated. I've been googling away and searching forums for days now.

Really?  You've never opened up the capture window?
    Never since about CS2.
I have had a tapeless workflow for ever... so never had reason to even take a look at the Capture Window in later versions of Premiere.

  • Capturing Video from a Camera that only has a USB port

I have read a number of posts from people who have been frustrated because they can not 'capture' video from a video camera that only has a USB port on it.  Unfortunately, Premier wants to see a Firewire connection; otherwise, it won't connect to a camera.   However, it is still very easy to import your video clips from such a camera into Premier Pro:
    1. Turn on your video camera and connect it to your computer via the USB connections.
    2. In Premier, go to the Media Browser.
    3. In the Media Browser, you will see all the drives on your computer. Amongst those drives will be a drive that was created for your camera. (It will be identified as X: (Removable).  Double click on that drive and you will see all your recorded video clips in the column just to the right.
    4. Highlight any/all clips that you want to import. Then, simply drag those clips/files up into your Project Organizer (normally, in the upper left corner of the page)
    That's it.
You'll probably find this method of importing your clips/files off of your camera easier than if you did have a Firewire and utilized the 'Capture' function.

And a bigger problem will be that that camera (with its card or HDD) will have to be connected, whenever one wishes to edit, and it cannot be overwritten to).
As has been mentioned, the Project file does NOT contain any Assets, with the exception of Titles created in PrPro's Titler. This ARTICLE will give a bit more background on what is in the Project file, plus a bit more.
The same sort of problem can arise if one Imports a VOB from a DVD-Video disc, without Copying the VOB's over to the HDD. First, that DVD must be inserted for each editing session, and things will be horribly slow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Hd video from nikon d7000 in aperture 3 splutters

my hd videos from my nikon d7000 cannot be viewed properly im aperture 3.2.2 on my MBA 2011 (1,7 i5 with 4gb DDR3). they start stutter and do not replay fluently, even the sound is not synced.i have tried to repair and reinstall, it does not help.

Technically, you should only need to verify that you have at least the RAW Compatibility Update 3.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1357
Current version is 3.7 which can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1386
Note - I assume that the 3.7 would include 3.6, but am not sure.
If you already have the correct RAW support for OS X and are importing new images into a new or trial library, you might try running the 'Repair Database' option found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Good luck.

  • Does iPhoto 11 support RAW files from Nikon D800?

Does iPhoto 11 support Raw files from a Nikon D800 or do I need to upgrade to Apeture? I am running 10.7.4. and currently use iPhoto '09

Aperature and iPhoto use the same RAW support - you probably need to upgrade to iPhoto '11  - purchase from the App store, backup your iPhoto library and upgrade - the RAW support list is here

  • Having Downloaded the camera raw plug in, files from Nikon D800 not recognised. How do I fix this please?

I have just had a new hard drive in my MacBook Pro and had to reinstall Photoshop CS4. Despite downloading the most recent Camera Raw plug-in Photoshop does not recognise my raw files from my Nikon D 800

That is correct. The Nikon D800 RAW NEF requires ACR 6.7  or newer and you need at least CS5  to use ACR 6.7.  You need to download the 8.6 DNG convert and create DNG files for NEF files to use CS4. Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras

  • Corrupted RAW photos in iPhoto 9.6 (Yosemite) from Nikon D800

Since upgrading to Yosemite (OS 10.10.1) and iPhoto 9.6, all my RAW photos imported into iPhoto from my Nikon D800 appear to be corrupted.
The thumbnails contain pixellated boxes over the image.  It appears that if I go into Edit mode within iPhoto and adjust anything (such as Enhance, etc), the pixellated box goes away and the image is restored.  That's one way to fix the problem, but in researching I see that others have fixed the problem by removing the RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle from the System Library and downloading a newer version (OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support)
The problem is  --  the latest RAW Compatibility Update version for Yosemite 6.02 appears to be the one I currently am using (in my System Folder).
In that same article referenced above, my Nikon D800 is listed in an earlier version simply titled "Supported by Yosemite 10.10".
Could it be that the RAWCamera.bundle 6.02 is causing my problem and I need to go back to an earlier version?
If so, how do I do that?  The upgrade to Yosemite and the subsequent upgrade to its compatible iPhoto 9.6 was done at the same time - no backup in between.

You could try to downgrade to RAW support 6.01. It helped for the same camera in this case:
Re: Digital Camera Raw Compatibility 6.02 - Nikon D800
Make a backup of your system and try to downgrade the RAW support to version 6.01
To downgrade the RAW Support to the last version from before the last update try this:
To reinstall the 'RAW Compatibility Update' it is necessary to uninstall the currently installed raw support. Otherwise the installer will rightfully say, that you already have the latest version installed.
If your tests are showing that the problem happens also in a different user account, try this:
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field. Click the "Go" button.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password. (don't empty the Trash, so you can put the files back, if need be)
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site:
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1777?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
    Then restart your Mac.
