Capture now doesn´t respect tc

Why when I capture through of capture now with firewire doesn´t respect the tc of my camera?
Thanks a lot.

Well, if you have device control set to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE, that ignores timecode. Device Control must be set to Firewire NTSC (or Firewire PAL for Europe), or Firewire BAsic.

  • Capture now doesn't react

I'm using an oldfashioned SONY HVR-A1E recording on tapes and I've used Final Cut Express with Capture / Now for some time and it worked fine. I always had problems using Log and Transfer, it just couldn't find my camera (there was nothing in the preview window). I can't locate my camera anywhere on my mac. I'm connecting my camera via a firewire to an external harddisk, which is connected to my Mac - it worked with Capture / Now before, but could that be the problem?
For some reason the NOW button just doesn't react when I open Capture. I can't seem to recall doing anything differently. It would be nice if I could get the log and transfer to work by locating my camera - but at the very least just get the NOW button in the capture window to again - hope anyone can help ;o)

    Thanks for your quick reply
My camera is set for DVsp and it says DVin iLINK on the display of the camera - when I plug the firewire cable.
I've set the Easy Setup in FCE at (format) PAL and (use) DV-pal (I'm in Europe, but I'm using my material for web, so if other formats work better it could be different). I've tried different options within all formats and HDV doesn't respond at all so I guess DV is the right format for the recording on my camera.
I can se and hear my recordings in the capture preview window but the NOW button just doesn't respond. When I try to set the timecodes to capture a minute - (for instance from 00:38:42:00 to 00:39:42:00) the in- and out timecodes just align to the end point (from 00:39:42:00 to 00:39:42:00) using the button CLIP it doesn't capture anything.
Very frustrating. Now I'm just capturing my footage via iMovie and importing it to FCE, but I wish this could be solved.

  • Capture Now doesn't capture all

I just starting using HD. The Capture Now is not capturing the whole tape. Plus, it captures segments and numbers them. How do I get it to capture the whole tape?

If there are breaks in the recording, FCP makes new clips by default.
You can change this behavior in preferences:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23293?viewlocale=en_US
In general, it's best not to use Capture Now, since you can lose frames.
It's best to set an in point and and an out point, and use Capture Clip.
Here's some good advice on capturing HDV:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/capture_hdv_prores_fwbalis.html
Of course, you still haven't told us what format you are using.
You'll get better answers if you supply more details.
Since you said "tape" we assumed you're using HDV.

  • Capture Now Doesn't work

I recently had audio dropout problems when shooting an event...it was my camcorder's fault....my brand new Sony PD170 ended up getting repaired. Now I'm trying to log and capture the tapes. I have batch captured some of the footage but have been having trouble capturing some clips...it's always the clips with glaring dropout issues. When I try to batch capture these clips they remain offline. I figured it might be a timecode issue, so I tried capturing the offline clips using "capture now." The first clip I tried to capture ran about 5 seconds with no problem and then stopped and I received the message "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
For your information, I know how to do a "Capture Now"....am just experiencing problems for the first time now. Also, want to mention that under User Preferences, I UNchecked "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" and I UNchecked "Abort capture on dropped frames." Under System Settings I checked "Limit Capture Now to 30 mins."
Am I doing something wrong or does it make sense that due to my camera problems I will never be able to capture some of the footage? Thanks so much for your help.

'Problem Ticket' huh? That's good, Patrick. When I worked for the telephome company in Washington, D. C., three or four lifetimes ago, we called them Trouble Tickets.
I might incorporate that phrase into this current thread, when I revise it in v2:

  • Capturing now, doesn't capture anything...

    Hi:
I've got a problem capturing HDV footage with my Z1 under Final Cut 5.2. As I've got lot of Gigas of dsk space and didn't have too much time I made a full tape capture using Capture Now.
The tape began to capture and preview windows said that was capturing, but after the tape arrived at the end no clip appeared at the browser and capture files appeared at Finder unexpectedly small and they didn't even run.
Has had anyone else the same problem? What have you done?

I used the HDV 1080i50 easy setup, that is the way I shooted.
Yes, the video was showing during the capture, and told that was capturing, but after the tape arrived at the end nothing was captured. Even if you tried to esc in the middle. This happens randomly.

  • FCP 7, 'Capture Now' suddenly stops working

I have been capturing footage from several tapes for many days now, with zero problems. I started doing some more today,
also with no problems, until about the 4th capture attempt. Suddenly, when I hit 'capture now' during playback, nothing at all
happens. I have more than 2TB of free space on my scratch disk, and no capture settings have been changed. I can control
the deck just fine, so communication between the deck and FCP is not an issue. But it literally went from being fine for one clip,
and completely non responsive for the next. I closed FCP, powered down the camera, re-seated the firewire cables, turned the
camera back on and re opened FCP. Same thing. 'Capture Now' doesn't do a thing. I have imported more than 15 tapes without
a single issue, now suddenly I am dead in the water. What am I missing?
I am using a Sony HC-1 with DV footage; Easy Setup set to DV NTSC, Device Control to Firewire NTSC. As I said, device
control works perfectly, but capture suddenly will not initiate. It's as if the 'capture now' button just went dead,
    so to speak.
    HELP!!

Trashing preferences did the trick, and that app was great. So I was able to get up and running again and get a few more tapes imported. But NOW...
I put in another tape this afternoon, and now when I hit 'capture now' it appears to start the capture, goes for approx. 1 second, then stops and says "searching for media". Nothing I have tried solves this problem. I have powered everything down, unplugged/replugged everything, no help. SO frustrating!
    'Lil help??

  • Cannot import using "Capture Now"

I have what I hope is a minor problem with importing HDV using Final Cut 7. I can import fine using "Clip", where I set the in and out points. But when I want to simply "Capture Now", it fails every time. It captures for less than one second, then says "searching for media", but never finds/imports anything.
So my question is, why would 'capture clip' work fine but 'capture now' doesn't work at all, using the same media? I am using a Sony FX-7 HDV camcorder via firewire, Final Cut 7, and the HDV 1080i60 codec.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yes the tape is playing, but it only shows the image for about 1 second, then it goes black and says "searching for media". The tape continues to play in the camera, but FCP won't import anything.

  • Capture now nightmare

I have been shooting a project for 3 years and i am supposed to finish editing it in 2 weeks. I have only ever used capture now to import footage. I know its not the best way to work but its the only way i know because its how i was tought. i plan on learning batch capture, ect. when i finish this video. I have most of my footage captured, named and put in to appropriate bins, but i still have quite a bit more footage to capture.
the other day, i opened up log and capture, played my tape and pressed capture now at the begining of a clip and esc at the end of it (like i always do and always have done). it worked. then i got to my next clip and pressed capture now and nothing happened. it just stopped working. it was like it wasnt even a button. i could still play, pause, ff, rew, stop, view the footage on the tape but i could not capture now. im getting really frustrated. anyone know why this doesnt work all of a sudden?
    thanks

    G5 Power Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

They are located under <user name>/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/
    Their names are :
    Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs.fcset
    Final Cut Pro Obj Cache.fcmch
    Final Cut Pro Prof Cache.fcpch
This assumes FCP 5, but I believe the names and locations are very similar in 4.5.
When you trash these preference files you will lose your user settings, so take note of what you might need to reset.
    Quit FCP.
Move the preference files to the trash.
Start FCP. It will take a little longer than usual.
Dial in your most important settings.
    See if Capture Now works.
If Capture Now works, empty the trash and finish dialing your settings in.
If Capture Now doesn't work, quit, and you can trash the new pref files and put your old ones back in place, as they were not the problem.

  • Capture Now Freezing

I just got a Canopus ADVC 110. Everything connects fine and works well. I can moniter play and watch video in the capture windo. I have my VCR connected to the converter via RCA then to the computer with FireWire. When I try to capture "now" the window that shows what I'm capturing freezes. And I get a clip that show's a half second of action and sound and then a minute of still frame. I'm confused with what to do. I've check a lot of other discussions and help guides online and in books. The iMovie capture works great my Final Cut doesn't. I'm using Final Cut Express 2. Please help I would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the DV Converter setting in FCE?

  • FCP4: Can't "capture now"

    FCP4
    Powerbook G4 867MHZ 10.2.8
When I try to use "capture now" in FCP4, I get the "allocating disk space" message. I've noticed that many seem to have had a similar problem. But whereas everyone else who sees this message seems to end with the dreaded rainbow circle of confusion spinning into eternity and then discover gigantic phantom files, for me the "capture now" window just disappears after about 15 seconds and I end up right back where I started. The only evidence that I tried the procedure at all are small (roughly 200kb) files in the "capture scratch." These files do have the tell-tale av. I also have Norton Antivirus running, though I've also tried disabling it with no discernible difference.
What I find odd is that the last time I had a digitizing session (about two months ago) everything worked like a charm. As far as I can tell nothing has changed in my set-up. Now, it's not working at all.
I have four different scratch drives and have tried all of them, as well as the internal hard drive. I have tried reducing the limit of "capture now" to 1 minute. I've tried trashing the preferences, restarted the machine any number of times. The physical connections are all working, since I was able to preview the source through iMovie. (However, my digitizer doesn't import properly to iMovie, so I can't simply use that as a workaround.) I'm out of ideas. Does anyone else have some? (Please....)
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
    I'm using FCP 4.1.
QT 6.5.3. Don't have a key for QT6 Pro. Tried to get one when I moved FCP from my desktop machine (and, yes, I did properly uninstall it from the old machine), but haven't figured out how to get a Pro key for QT6, now that QT7 is out. In any case, Pro can't be the problem since I haven't had it for a long time.
I'm in the process of unistalling all Norton software—though I'm not sure how to make sure I get everything. Having looked through a number of posts, others seem to have that problem as well. But I've had NAV running for a long time and it's never interfered with FCP before. (I won't be able to check until tonight when I get back from teaching.)
At least two of the external drives are HFS, as, of course, is the internal. (I inherited the other two and away from them so at the moment I can't check them.) In any case they all seem to behave in the same way.
Yes, I'm running 10.2.8. I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school. Really, it's been very stable for me, and again it's never given FCP any trouble. But it's clear that I'll need to upgrade to 10.4 if I determine that the FCP 5/Studio will run decently on my machine.
For various reasons, primarily because it allows me to bypass you know what, I'm using an old Formac digitizer. I need to have this capability because I have to be able to extract clips (from my own library) for use in the classroom (which also explains why I only use FCP in spurts).
    Thanks!

  • System crashes when i press esc to stop capturing now

I capture video using the Capture Now button and when I press the Esc button to stop the capturing, the Video deck doesn't respond and continues to play the tape. The program doesn't respond and I have to force Quit.
The External Maxtor 250 Gb hard drive then says that only 1,95 Gigs are left and after I restart, in the clips folder an unamed_av clip appeares. When i drag it into the trash and empty the trash the hard drives works ok and the 121 Gigs of space come back again.
    What is going on?
    Does anybody have the clue?
It is very annoying and every time I have to recapture.
It mostly happens with long clips.
    I use a G5 Imac OS X version 10.3.5.
    Final Cut Pro 5 HD.
    Can anybody help please?
    Thank you indeed.

    Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

    1. verify the disk is not formated mc-dos. It should be formatted Mac OS Extended. Journalling can be either on or off - it does not seem to matter for most people.
    2. If you can avoid it, do not use Capture Now. In the Logging settings- set an In point ~5sec from the beginning of the tape and an End point ~ 5 sec from the end of the tape then use Batch Capture.
    3. If you can not avoid Capture Now, make sure the capture limit is set to 30 minutes or so and capture is smaller time chunks.
    good luck.

  • FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes

Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Just to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

  • "Waiting for time code" while Capture Now

My Sony DSC-TRV 460 (Hi 8 digital, not HD) camcorder (digital video output activated because the tape is an older, analog) is attached w/firewire. Click File > Capture. The capture window appears and its controls do control the camcorder and I can watch the tape w/audio there. According the Help, I set the tape a bit before I want to start, click Play (or spacebar), click Capture Now. This launches a big black window that says Final Cut Express w/Apple logo. At the bottom it says "hit escape to exit," "device must be in VTR mode" and "Waiting for time code." The same camcorder with the same settings brings video into iMovie HD with no problem so I could workaround that way. How to get FCE to do what I want, though?

I've accomplished the task several times with my Sony Digital-8 camera. Since the tape is analog there's no timecode (which iMovie doesn't look for) and you must use the DV Converter setting in easy setup. I think you're right about the on-screen transport controls: you won't have them. (FCE thinks it's just listening to a converter box -- same as if you connected a VCR to the D8's analog ports, assuming the 460 offers that feature.) Try a reboot to clear things out. Turn on the camera then start FCE and check the Easy Setup settings. Use Capture Now and press the 'play' button on the camcorder.

  • Can't capture now

Trying to capture "now". Then opens a black screen as usual but freezes up with the message "Allocating Disk Space". I can't cancel it or quit the progran, nor shutdown the computer. It just locks up. Please, help will be apreciated.
    thanks.

#10 Capture now makes large file, Beachball
Shane's Stock Answer #10: ALLOCATING DISKSPACE
    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.

  • A better Capture Now?

The problem: FCP has difficult capturing. I am running the latest FCP on the latest OS X on an Intel iMac Core Duo. When I capture, it doesn't matter what is going on, it will eventually drop a frame. I use Jiggler to keep my computer awake, and quit everything else, and even though the CPU is working at 80% (out of 200%), it will eventually drop frames.
I am trying to capture four tapes, all 40 minutes long (two cameras of an hour and a half show) so I need the entirety of all four tapes to work on. I have always used Capture Now (how I was taught), and am not against logging, but this application would not be good with logging (I need the entire tape). Currently, I am trying to capture a logged clip that is 40 minutes long.
All that having been said, there has to be an easier way to capture an entire tape. Can a program not say "OK, I dropped a frame, let me rewind a few seconds and pick up from where I left off"? To me, this sounds easy to do, but I don't know of any program that does this.
What else would you suggest? Any other capture programs (cheep) that I could try?
    Matthew

I am capturing from a Panasonic DVC 30 over firewire, and storing it on my internal hard drive<<</div>
That can cause dropped frame fairly frequently. It's best to capture to an external FW drive ... about the only option you have on an iMac. Plug the drive into your iMac then connect the camera to the drive;'s other FW port.
I guess I could capture chunks, but I don't like that... I like having one big file I can scrub from one end to the other quickly<<</div>
Get the best of both worlds: a full tape capture AND a properly logged clip. Here's what I do for long recordings (shows, etc): When I get back from the shoot, I load the first tape. Since it hasn't been rewound yet, I can quickly set an OUT point near the end of the tape (leaving enough room for post-roll). Next, rewind the tape and set an IN point (leaving enough for pre-roll), then log the clip.
It may be a few days before I'm ready to capture but this method gives me a chance to preview the footage and spot potential camera problems. When I'm ready to capture, I select the clip in the Browser and do a Batch Capture. I'll get a full tape in one clip.
