Capture Now - Making New Master Clips ???

Now i really have a strange thing going on... I am using Capture Now to start an edit session with HDV Footage and it is making NEW Master Clips when there is a stopdown/startup recording on the tape... (a change in setup for a shot)...
I have gone in the User Settings and unclicked all of the stuff dealing with dropframe or timecode breaks with no luck...
Any Help ???
-Brian

It will make life harder to keep the bin's organized... because i am going to have to view each clip separately -vs- scanning one clip that has all of my b-roll or my uppers / interviews to find the story...
yea i did restart the whole computer and had to reset the capture preferences and such...
I do know about the grief that is associated with timecode breaks in the middle of a shot... dealt with stuff like that in school 7 years ago...
I do appreciate the help...thanks again...

  • HDV batch capture is making new clips...

    thanks for watching...
i have imported batch lists into FCP with name, media start, media end, reel and log note just as the FCP manual instructs. they import fine and i have them all in their own bins.
i batch captured a few tapes to day and i noticed that FCP is making new clips at times. for instance i'll have a clip "dogs" in the original batch list. after the batch capture there will be "dogs" and "dogs -1" the starting time code of "dogs" and the ending timecode of "dogs -1" are the original start and end of the clip. so, FCP has spit this clip in two for some reason. why is that?
i thought it might have to do with the setting "make new clip on Start/stop" thats listed in the clip settings tab of the log/capture window. so i made sure this was unclicked and then tried another batch , also making sure to uncheck "use original clip settings" in the batch window. but, the problem still persists.
i have 30 tapes to digitize and i'd prefer the clips matched the batch lists. any ideas i can try to solve this problem?
    take care,

Is it a new media drive?
how is your media drive formatted? highlight the drive on the desktop and press command(apple)+i to get info...
Where it says 'Format' it should read Mac OS Extended... does yours say FAT 32 by any chance?
FAT32 is a different format that can be read by PCs and Macs... it can only store file sizes of 2Gb, so has the knock-on effect of causing FCP to break captures into smaller chunks.
If your drive is FAT32 you need to re-format it using Disc Utility. When you do this, you will lose everything on that drive, so back it up if possible.
If your drive is formatted correctly, post back with your media set-up, ie - what drives you use, how is your capture scratch configured etc.

  • Deleting audio from master clip

I accidentally captured audio with my master clips. Now I want to delete it so that I have video only clips to merge with new audio captured independently. How can I modify a large group of master clips?

Doing a batch export and then deleting original clips would probably work.

  • Capture problems for new Final Cut user

I'm new to final cut, just switching from pc...got a brand new mac pro, fresh install of final cut studio. I am capturing hdv tapes from a Sony FX1 using capture now so that the clips are broken up. It captures perfectly except for the long clip, which is about 40 minutes long. I've gone back to capture it alone and get an unknown capture error after I hit escape to end the capture. There is plenty of room on the hard drive and the ckeckbox in system settings for limiting capture now to 30 minutes is not checked. Any ideas?

Are you capturing using HDV, ProRes, or SD via i.Link Conversion? I also have a Sony FX1, and capturing long clips is only an issue when my hard drives can't keep up or if there is an issue with the tape. Sometimes the tape can have issues and will disrupt your capture. Definitely set your capture scratch to an internal drive if you can and don't capture to your boot drive if possible. If you only have one drive, fork over the 100 bucks and get a 750 gig drive or even two or three and raid them together. You'll be happier if you do.

  • Capture Now Doesn't work

I recently had audio dropout problems when shooting an event...it was my camcorder's fault....my brand new Sony PD170 ended up getting repaired. Now I'm trying to log and capture the tapes. I have batch captured some of the footage but have been having trouble capturing some clips...it's always the clips with glaring dropout issues. When I try to batch capture these clips they remain offline. I figured it might be a timecode issue, so I tried capturing the offline clips using "capture now." The first clip I tried to capture ran about 5 seconds with no problem and then stopped and I received the message "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
For your information, I know how to do a "Capture Now"....am just experiencing problems for the first time now. Also, want to mention that under User Preferences, I UNchecked "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" and I UNchecked "Abort capture on dropped frames." Under System Settings I checked "Limit Capture Now to 30 mins."
Am I doing something wrong or does it make sense that due to my camera problems I will never be able to capture some of the footage? Thanks so much for your help.

'Problem Ticket' huh? That's good, Patrick. When I worked for the telephome company in Washington, D. C., three or four lifetimes ago, we called them Trouble Tickets.
I might incorporate that phrase into this current thread, when I revise it in v2:

  • Applying effect to multiple master clips in bin

Basically I would like to apply the timecode reader effect to multiple master clips in a bin so that I can batch export those clips to an external drive for the director to take and watch at home.
I know how to apply an effect to multiple clips in a timeline, but is there a way to do it right to multiple master clips in a bin?
Right now my process is to duplicate the clips for a scene as new master clips in a separate bin, one by one apply the timecode reader (as favorite effect) to each clip, then batch export those clips to the external drive.
As I get to the scenes with many many clips, applying the effect gets a bit tedious. Just hoping there's a faster way I'm not thinking of or unaware of.
    Thanks.

It always seems like a strange thing to do, but the standard for these kinds of things seems to be to put everything on the timeline, apply the effects (you know how), and then drag them off the timeline into a fresh bin.
It's very quick and does the job just fine, but always somehow feels.. wrong.
If there were a way for a timecode reader to be applied by Compressor, then it would be much more of a batch thing. But I don't think there is.

  • Master clip effects applied when replacing clip into after effects?

    Hi Guys,
Love the new Master Clip effects in Premiere 2014 but im wondering what happens to the effects if I replace the clip in my timeline into an After Effects clip? Will the effects applied to the master clip be disabled for that new AE clip ?
    Best,
    Patrick

    Hi,
Which effect are you trying to apply?
Are you making subclips before applying the effect on the Master clip?
You can apply the effect on the Master clip and then make subclips from it. It will work for you.

  • Master clip duplication problem

If I copy a master clip in the browser, then paste it, isn't the new clip supposed to independent? The Master Clip colunm is still showing a check beside the new clip.

Actually, in the book Final Cut Pro 5 by Diana Weynand from the Apple Pro Training Series it specifically states that copying and pasting a master clip in the browser will not create a new master clip (p. 270). I tried it in 5.0.x and that is the case, the pasted clip is not a master clip. However, trying it in 5.1.2 the pasted clip does become a master clip.
There were changes made to master clip behavior going from 5.0 to 5.1.2, but this change isn't mentioned in any of the documentation I've seen.
If anyone else is working with the Final Cut Pro 5 book, there's another master clip discrepancy between the book and 5.1.x. On page 273 it says that you will get a warning when deleting a master clip from a project that has been used in a sequence. According to the late breaking news document at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/FinalCut_Pro_5.0_lbnz.pdf the warning dialog will no longer appear:
    Managing and Revealing Master Clips
In previous versions of Final Cut Pro, affiliate clips shared data with a master clip stored in the Browser. If you deleted the master clip, a dialog would appear requesting confirmation that you wanted to break the master-affiliate clip relationship. If you clicked OK, all of the affiliated clips would become independent.
In Final Cut Pro 5.1.2, deleting a master clip no longer breaks the relationship between affiliated clips. Instead, the master-affiliate clip relationship still exists even when the master clip in the Browser is deleted. No dialog appears when you delete a master clip.

  • Copy Master Clip Warning

okay, here's the mistake I made.
I copy and pasted a section of video from one project to another. i worked on it there and then tried to copy paste it back to the original project and the warning came up:
"A Master Clip already exists for a clip you are adding to this project, but some of its propertis do no match those of the clip you are adding."
then it gives me 3 options to resolve the conflict
"For the existing master clip in this project, use properties from:
    1. The Clip you are adding
    2. The existing clip in this project
    or
    3. Create a new master clip and any necessary affiliated using properties from the clip you are adding."
Should I go with 3? I don't care about the original clips/edit. I want to use the new video/edit i edited in the other project. hope this makes sense.
    Thanks!

The options listed are pretty clear about what they will do. Choose the option you desire. Which of the three options are you having trouble with understanding? No offense intended, but is English your primary language?

  • Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?
    HDV 1080i60
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • CREATING NEW/Duplicate Master clips

Hi Guys...me again. I've been reading the manual all weekend...and decided that, since I SCREWED with this compressor thing...that I'd try to prevent the problem from happening again. I need to know if I'm on the right track.
I'm working on a video of our show (animal show) and I am creating a dozen or so "mini clips" in the timeline, one for each animal segment, each contains a/b roll, effects, etc. I DO NOT have these clips linked togeter yet...I've left a gap in the timeline between each clip, in order to grab and move them around as I see fit.
I was thinking...(a dangerous past-time for me) that "Gee, Mark, wouldn't it be swell if I could make each of these little animal clips into independent clips, so if I screw up, or have to go back and tweak it later...I don't have to deal with this **** compressor and ripping apart my work? ".
SO...I read the manual, and it seems that I can do this. The option in the menu is to make an independent clip, but when I highlighted my video/auido files in the clip area, and clicked the independent clip button, nothing happened. Does this mean that it recorded it somewhere on my project drive? i could not seem to find it. Also, should I just Modify it by making a New/Duplicate Master CLip?
Does this sound like I'm on the right track?
I'm just trying to prevent my "other" (freakin' compressor) issues from having to happen again.
    THANKS AGAIN!
    MW

No. That is not what it means.
Make independant clip removes the link between the timeline clip and the clip in the browser that the timeline clip came from. In otherwords, it will keep you from matching back to that clip in the browser.
I don't know what issues you have with compressor, but if you want your segments to be self contained clips, export them as self contained quicktimes (using Export QuickTime Movie... leave it at Current Settings... and set Self Contained). Then you can bring them back in and arrange them in your timeline as you see fit, they will be entirely self contained...

  • For some reason FCP is now making multi files when I capture called -av

For some reason FCP is now making multi files when I capture called -av
I capture one clip but I get 7 files.
    sineparade live-1-av 1.91 GB
    sineparade live-2-av 1.91 GB
    sineparade live-3-av 1.91 GB
    sineparade live-4-av 1.91 GB
    sineparade live-5-av 1.91 GB
    sineparade live-6-av 334.1 MB
    sineparade live-av 1.91 GB
I don't know why this started in recent captures but it is eating up disk space as it is 7 times larger than it needs to be and only the last one works.

Is there a way to get these files to be joined together into one file easily. I capture on a FAT32 hard drive but then transfer the files onto my edit machine and would prefer to keep everything archived there as a single file.
Any programs or scripts that I can use. I have figured out that you can open each file in Quicktime and then save as a self contained file, but I was wondering if there is a better way.

  • FCP not making new clip on timecode break

I want FCP to make a new clip every time I start/stop recording...
I have "make new clip" set on timecode break in the User Prefs...
Why is it not making new clips?

Becuase it doesn't do things like iMovie... and there shouldn't be a TC break everytime you pause the camera. If there is one though, FCP will create a new clip there if the preference for this is set in the user prefs.
BUT there is a way to get the long captures broken down into subclips and they act much the same as clips in iMovie.
Capture a tape. Select the clip in the Browser, and then from the Mark menu, select "DV Start/Stop Detect. FCP finds all camera cuts and puts a marker there. You can rename them anything you want, select a marker and drag it to a bin, and it creates a subclip containing only the material from that marker to the next. This only works with DV=25 formats... miniDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO...

  • How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when opening the program to digitize new clips for new project. i have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what to disable.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.
To disable the feature, install this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

  • Aperture 3: Deleting raw files and making the jpeg my new master-

Aperture 3 has made some great strides in making the following possible ( I posted this originally in 2007):
What I'd like to do is shoot everything in raw + jpg, and then keep the raw files only for the important shots.
I really like having the option of raw processing, but the storage demands are very heavy. If I could just make a selection of photos in a roll, and have a command to delete any unneeded raw files from the selected photos, while keeping the original jpgs as master, that would be great.
Also, it would be great to be able to manipulate a raw file, and then when I'm satisfied with the image, to render a high-quality jpg from that raw file & make the jpg the new master, and then delete the raw file to free up disk space.
Basically, I want the raw file safety net for everyday images, without gobbling up gigabytes of disk space <<<<<
With Aperture 3, I can finally change the master to the jpg file, which solves part of the problem. But I still want to be able to manipulate my raw file, and render a new high-quality jpg master.
Why don't Aperture / Lightroom do this? To me at least, it seems an obvious feature.

I had a chance to talk to product managers from both Apple & Adobe about this at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC a couple years back. Both seemed receptive, but here we are - years later - no progress.
I think part of the problem is that there's a purist mentality about RAW files. One should always shoot them - and then keep them forever- after all- they're your negatives!
But what about event photography? Or weddings, as you pointed out? It makes no sense to burden your workflow & backup system with 4GB of RAW files of people grinning into the camera. Once the adjustments have been made, the RAW files are just a ball & chain on your data management. And let's not forget, once you really know what you're doing, your jpegs should be good most of the time anyway.
I want RAW files as a safety net for errors in exposure and white balance. Once I know I have good photos, I don't need the safety net anymore- at least not at the price of all that hard disk space and transfer time for online backup. Of course, for my fine art stuff and important documentary work, I'll always keep the RAWs permanently. But not for routine parties/events.
You put your finger on the problem with re-importing jpegs as a solution. You lose your metadata- rankings/album memberships, etc. This is no solution!
What I want is simple, and it would be immediately useful to countless photographers:
    1) Let me batch-delete RAW files when the jpegs are ok.
    2) Let me do adjustments on my RAW file, render out a high-quality jpeg, and make the jpeg my new master.
Whoever does this first - Aperture or Lightroom - that's the product I'll use.
