Capture NX or Aperture 2 with D300 ***

Alright, so what is the big deal about RAW files from a D300 not working right with anything but Capture NX. Can someone tell me how I'm supposed to edit 2000 pics from the wedding I'm about to shoot next week with Capture NX when it is so slow and has the worst user interface ever? Because Aperture 2 doesn't read my RAW files correctly. Or is this just something people are blowing way out of context? Should I not worry about this:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/aperture_users/discuss/72157604790242946/

The "picture styles" information (punchy, vibrant, portrait, faithful, whatever Nikon calls it I use Canon) is Nikon proprietary info in the RAW file. Aperture won't read it -- it does a default conversion.
That is why the Nikon version is so (over)saturated in the examples you showed. Aperture most certainly does read your RAW files correctly; it just doesn't read Nikon's proprietary tags.
What can you do? Well, for photos that are in similar light, you can tweak one of them (crank the saturation and/or vibrance) and the lift and stamp it to the rest. Should be pretty quick.
I don't think though it's really reasonable to say "This is the default Aperture conversion with NO adjustments this is a real problem." Because, well, RAW files tend to be flat. They tend to need a tweak or two, but for 2000 files in Aperture in similar light it wouldn't take all that long to tweak them all and convert them to JPEGs in Aperture. On a high-end machine maybe 2 minutes to edit one image and then 10 seconds per image to stamp and export.

  • Capture Sharpening in Aperture

Is there a good source for information about capture shapening within Aperture? Using edge sharpening, it seems to do a reasonable job for files that will not be enlarged much, but when I try to print even 16x20 from a 6 MP file, the images seem either soft, or if I boost the sharpening, I see artifacts and crunchy pixels. If I export files without sharpening and use Photokit Sharpener for capture and output sharpening, all is well. I have been using Lightroom since it was in beta, and I am very happy with the capture sharpening there. I'd like to get similar results from Aperture if I am going to use it regularly. (Perhaps the rumored 2.0 update will take care of that)

There really isn't an Aperture equivalent to Photokit and its one of the big drawbacks of Aperture for me. The problem is that to do "Bruce Fraser" type sharpening you need to do output sharpening at the desired output resolution. There is no way to do this in the current version of Aperture.
However, I have a workaround that sort of works. I alter the sharpening in Raw Fine tuning to do capture sharpening and then I use Edge Sharpening for output sharpening. I got the settings by starting with unsharpened raw images. I exported them to Photoshop and used Photokit to do capture sharpening. I then went back to Aperture and adjusted the sharpening in raw fine tuning to match ( as well as I could) the results in Photoshop.
Output sharpening was harder because it depends on the size you will print at, but I followed a similar procedure except in this case I tested parameters by exporting the file from Aperture at various sizes after sharpening and then comparing to a version sharpened with Photokit. I did this at two sizes, full size and roughly half-size at 300 dpi.
I went through this because I was doing an Aperture book and I didn't want to have to export each photo in the book to Photoshop for sharpening. It worked pretty well both with Apple printing and SharedInk printing.
The settings I used are below, but they were created for a 6 Megapixel DLSR ( a Canon D60). You would have to alter the settings for different cameras, though the approach to finding the settings would be the same:
    Capture Sharpening:
    Wide Edge
    Intensity:0.60
    Edges:0.63
    Medium Edge
    Intensity:0.60
    Edges:1.0
    Output Sharpening;
    Using Edge Sharpen:
    Full size
    Intensity:0.5
    Edges:1.0
    Fall off:0.7
    Half-size
    Intensity:0.5
    Edges:1.0
    Fall off:1.0
The settings worked better for full size than half-size.
If Apple is listening then I would suggest that they read Bruce Fraser's Real World Sharpening book and allow Aperture to match the multi-pass sharpening approach he outlines. That would primarily involve changes in edge sharpening, by allowing it to be done at final output resolution and allowing edge sharpen settings to be sensitive to output resolution.

  • Data Reading Capture Error - what's up with this?

I know a few others have posted about this, but I have not seen an explanation.
My stats: 10.4.2 (yes, I'm going to get 10.4.3 - I will eat my pants if that has anything to do with this), FCP 5.0.3, G4 1.5GHz Pbook, LaCie 250GB external firewire drive for capture (TONS of space), Sony GV D300 capture deck, footage shot on the Panasonic DVX100 24p camera. The tapes are non-dropframe.
The error reads: Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. To capture as much of your footage as possible, please log and capture a clip that ends before this segment, and another one that starts right after it.
This sounds to me suspiciously like Apple programmers punting on a known bug just prior to release, rather than something ACTUALLY wrong with my tapes, my computer, my connections, my drives or my deck.
The reason I say this is that I have just started a new project and am capturing five tapes of footage. I am on tape 4. I had no problem capturing from two of the 4 tapes so far - so my cables, deck, drive and software are fine.
On the 2 tapes that have given me problems, there is also discontinuous timecode. This is the DP's fault. However: the capture error is NOT occurring in places on the tape where the TC breaks (or skips, rather). THAT problem is simply causing the usual errors and requiring careful logging.
Instead, I get the error in question for clips that appear to be fine in terms of TC. When I get the capture error, I have actually been able to do 2 Capture Nows, but instead of capturing on both sides of the problem area ("this segment" in the error message parlance), I have been able to capture ALL OF THE TIMECODE in 2 clips. That is, when the capture fails and kicks out a mini clip (up to the point where the capture snagged), I can start a Capture Now from one frame after the last TC in the mini clip and Capture from there to the end.
So that suggests to me that there is nothing wrong with my tapes, either. To me, this is conclusive evidence of a pure software error.
I am wondering, therefore, if there is anyone from Apple monitoring these boards who can tell me what is ACTUALLY happening here and what to do, because it's very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Nathan Jongewaard

My suggestion is that you reconsider whether your in Non-Drop frame. NTSC standard is Dropframe 29.97. I'm afraid you may have this backwards. DVX100's default to dropframe (29.97fps) in the USA. FCP could be encountering a pulldown cadence every few minutes because it expects a frame drop that is not there.
Remember the frame drop only occurs every few minutes so this makes sense. With standard NTSC capture (not 24fps pulldown removal) such dropped frames don't mess anything up. They just subtly shift the timing and sync of the audio track. You could have captured this way for years and rarely seen a problem with short clips. When doing a pulldown removal, a missing or in your case extra frame can confuse the pulldown removal system as it expects to find the video encoded in 29.97 rather than 30fps.

  • Is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

Not really.  You should not be sharing an Aperture library over a network.  It's not designed for that and you'll likely corrupt your library at some point.

I'm looking for a capture device that is compatible with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. I bought elgato but it is not compatible. Anyone know?

This is just a shot in the dark....
Do you have all your devices hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE?  For example -- your camera or digitizer?  When FMLE launches it will try to launch with the last known settings... including input devices.  If it can't find these devices (they're not hooked up and on) it can crash, although in most situations it will simply show a default screen with default settings.
If you do have your equipment hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE, try unplugging them and then launching FMLE so that it opens up in default configuration mode (no input devices selected; all default settings).  Then uncheck the "preview" boxes for both your input and output preview windows.  Close FMLE and then plug in your equipment (and turn it on) and relaunch FMLE.  I offer this suggestion as FMLE can sometimes act funny when the preview windows are open with certain types of input devices.  Don't worry -- you don't have to keep the preview windows off forever.  If you can get FMLE to successfully launch with the preview windows off, then you can set your settings however you like and save the profile.  Then quit and relaunch FMLE and then turn the preview windows back on and see if it works.  If it does, great.  Just be aware that making any settings changes while the preview windows are open could result in FMLE crashing.   Again -- this only happens with some capture devices, such as certain Dazzle capture boxes.
If none of this works, you could always try to upgrade to FMLE 3.2 and see if that solves your problem.

Find the old Aperture library in the Finder and double click it to launch Aperture with that library set to the default.

  • Can I use aperture 3 with 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo?

Can I use Aperture 3 with an imac with a 2.4 ghz intel core duo processor?

Yes. I still use a 2006 2.33 GHz C2D MBP with 3 GB RAM as a backup box, and it "works." Be aware that iMac is underpowered overall for Aperture usage, but some folks do OK with it (4 GB RAM minimum). Like DLS said, more RAM is better than less RAM. 8 GB RAM is generally appropriate, but I can even overload the 8 GB in my 2011 MBP when running an aggressive Aperture/Photoshop workflow.
Also the stronger the GPU the better, and an SSD is far far preferable to a hard drive for boot, because any page outs go to SSD instead of to the horribly slow 2.5" laptop drive.

  • Share aperture library with another aperture user

How do I share the same aperture library with another aperture user on a different computer each using separate aperture software? We have have tried using a hard drive, but the vault is not showing up to download.

are you trying to work simultaneously from the same library? I'm not sure Aperture will handle that one very well, but as I've never tried it I can't say for certain.
You may be able to "check out" projects from the main library to work on individually within your own personal libraries. When you're done w/ your work you would check the project back in to the main library for someone else to use.
I think the danger is in trying to access the same .plist or image at the same time as Aperture wouldn't know who's instructions to follow.

  • Using Aperture 3 with new (2011) iMac

Currently I have been using Aperture 3 with my MBP. My library is on an external drive. When I bought my iMac, I hooked up my drive to that machine and then opened Aperture and I got a message that popped up saying something like my library was 32bit and the iMac is 64bit and I would have to convert my entire library over to be able to use AP3 on my iMac. Does this sound right. I remember it was something along those lines and I ended up not converting all my files and still use my MBP instead.

How is your workflow set up? How are you moving the Aperture Library around? What OS X and what Aperture versions?
After backup to an independent drive (stuff happens...) make sure all apps and the OS are current. Also read this regarding

  • Tether problems in Aperture 3 with D3x & D3s - No HUD + other issues.

Running Aperture 3 with 10.6.2 on a fast MacPro.
I'm able to tether with both D3x and D3s, but the Tether HUD does not show up.
Tried all the usual, cables, restarts, 64bit vs. 32bit, etc. Nothing. Still useable, but nice to have the HUD.
Also, something I was REALLY hoping for in A3, but very disappointed not to see: I often shoot in RAW+JPEG in the studio. JPEG to give me B&W images that could even be used for finals if they are just right, and the RAW as backup in case I don't like the cameras' B&W conversion, or decide to use color.
The new A3 IMPORT features for RAW+JPEG are great, but when I tether, it usually shows the RAW right away, and then sometime later the JPEG shows up. Usually. Not all the time. If it doesnt show up, and I take another shot, the previous JPEG shows up, followed by the next RAW !
Would be great if there was a way to tell Aperture to ONLY show me the JPEG. Alas...

Using a track to place the pins automatically works fine - within the limitations of Aperture 3 just using minutes and hours and not seconds to place pins.
Moving an automatically placed pin to a different place on the track and letting adjust Aperture the other pins moves them to the next pin location previously used by Aperture and not by the same time offset of the manually moved pin.
Images associated with pin on location 1 get moved to pin of location 2… At least this is what happened the one time I tried that feature.
On top of that Aperture uses some dumb smart filtering and every of the locations require to deselect that filter in the search field of the browser. I guess that's the reason why you get missing images, they just got filtered out from display.

  • Got the email from Apple Aperture compatible with future versions of iOS?  (Mac OS?)

Got the email from Apple about Aperture this morning.  They had a huge omission:  are they going to keep Aperture compatible with future iOS? If not, I want, at a minimum, a refund for what I paid for the app.

They had a huge omission:  are they going to keep Aperture compatible with future iOS?
There will be no further development of Aperture. That much should be clear from the announcement, that Aperture will no longer be sold at the AppStore.  You are lucky - you used the last chance to buy the best photos app  ever Apple created. The new Photos is not intended to be  used by professional photographers like Aperture was. And you will be able to use and enjoy it as long as you keep a compatible operating system on your Mac.

  • Can't share Aperture photos with iWork and iLife

I can't see my Aperture photos in any iWork '08 or iLife '08 application. I am running 1.5.4; sharing previews is enabled in Aperture Prefs; previews for my entire Library set to 1280px (and there are definitely previews for every master image). However, I see nothing in any iWork '08 or iLife '08 app – no Aperture 'disclosure triangle' in the Media pane. Nothing. Zip.
I have rebuilt the Aperture database (Command + Option on start-up) for all 242 projects, but still no go.
The only thing I think it could be is that my 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' (all 95GB of it) is stored in its entirety on a different hard drive, with an alias pointing to it from my '~/user/Pictures' folder on my boot drive (which it shares with iPhoto Library). I thought alias' were supposed to be transparent to the OS and the other apps would be able to see my 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' as if it were on my primary drive (i.e., the same drive). Is there a permissions thing happening here?
This one has got me stumped. Any thoughts on why I can't share my Aperture photos with iWork '08 or iLife '08 would be gratefully received.

    Solved it!!!
I just went a little berserk with the plist files in ~/user/Library/Preferences (sorry, not very scientific....).
Interestingly, in addition to iWorks and iLife apps having their own preference files, there is also a file called 'com.apple.iApps.plist'. This was locked for some reason. Anyway, it and all the other pref files got trashed and then the trash emptied. Then I restarted my Mac and opened up iPhoto.
    Bingo!
    Same for Pages, etc.
Thanks to all who took time out of their day to help me -- much appreciated.

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling aperture 3 with 3 disc up grades,

    Hello.
Again \    As above how to , I have had aperture on my macs from day 1 . i have discs up grade from aperture 2 , and 3
i have just come back from apple after having a har ware chaeck.  All OK The software technician cannot find the problem why I keep getting kernal report shut downs, mostly when using aperture,    Its been fine for 3 days, Working on photoshop and deleting on external library .And also using Nick programs,  before , Allot of shut down,s ..
And to day it happen again when deleting photos from the main HD ,  through aperture, he fans got ging as prsessing was working hard,.
So Everything , including up dates on paralells and pther programs,, Ony Aperture to go.
The main program that i feel has been causing the kernal reports, As when it shuts down, On re boot, it asks most of the time for repair.
SO Down to the nitty gritty.   mac Lion mac book pro. Aperture 3,4.5 ...      How do I uninstall with out losing the libray config and re install from the discs.  Can I just down load the full program and intall with my keys ?
I remember having to roll back and key in the older one fist and then the latest one, When installing on this new mac.  But old age , forgot how I put it all together,
Hear from you soon I hope.

If Aperture is frequently crashing, and only Aperture, it does not necessarily mean, that Aperture is causing the crashes, it might be, that you have incompatible software installed, that installed problematic kernel extensions, start up items,  or plug-ins, are preventing aperture from working correctly. Then you would need to update incompatible items or reinstall the system.
Check, if all your third party software is compatible with your current MacOS X and Aperture. If other software installed kernel extensions, this can cause Aperture to crash or panic.
I.e. check the versions of your NIK plug-ins.
See:  Aperture 3.4 and later: Some third-party plug-ins are no longer compatible
Other reasons, that may cause Aperture to crash or panic, may be corrupted items in your Aperture library. Does Aperture crash, when you open it on a new, empty Aperture library and import some images for testing?
Does Aperture work with your current library, if you launch it with the SHIFT-key held down?  Report back with your findings.
See this documents, on what to check:   Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
But to finally answer your question:
How do I uninstall with out losing the libray config and re install from the discs.  Can I just down load the full program and intall with my keys ?
Reinstalling will not affect your Aperture library. But you cannot download an Aperture installer for a version compatible with Lion.
Move Aperture to the trash and use your Aperture 3 install disk to reinstall, then immediately use Software update to update to Aperture 3.4.5 again, without trying to run Aperture before.
The updater for 3.4.5 is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1657
Afterwards you will have to enter all three serial numbers, for the versions 1, 2, and three.
