Capture of DVC PRO HD tape

Hi,
Is it possible to capture DVC PRO HD tapes directly from the video player (Panasonic AJ-HD 1400E) in simply using a Firewire connection ?
Many thanks for your help !

According to specs here - http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/AJ-HD1400.asp
It says - IEEE 1394 input/output interface transfers DVCPRO HD native video to NLE systems without image quality degradation
So the answer should be yes. However, are you on the PC or Mac? With Windows 7, some cameras/decks don't work well with the default 1394 driver, but will work if you switch to the "Legacy" driver already in Windows. Something to keep in mind.
The deck has the 6-pin 1394 connector, not the smaller 4-pin usually found on camcorders, so be sure to have the correct cable on hand.
Thanks

  • CAPTURING FROM DVC PRO INTO iMOVIE

I am feeding a DVC pro deck with SDI out into the firewire port on my new mac. I can see the video in imovie capture window, but cannot actually capture footage (either by selecting import or hitting the space bar). No clips are captured.
I have rebooted the mac but still can't capture video. Since I can see video in the imove capture window, I can assume that the source (dvc pro) is not the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

iMovie 11 is well worth the cost. Get it for $14.99 in the new App Store.
In iMovie 11, you need to get a free app called MPEG Streamclip. You need to have it anyway. It is like a Swiss Army Knife for people who make videos. Right-click on the clip in iMovie. Select Reveal in Finder. Drag this clip to MPEG Streamclip. Move the playhead to the frame you want, and click FILE/EXPORT FRAME. Pick Jpeg, TIFF, or PNG and you are done.
In iMovie 08, the above procedure works fine as well. However, there is another way, which I have documented [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2255510]

  • Capture from DVC Pro AJ-D250

I am a rookie user. Have a FCP HD ver 4.5. Can control the DVC Pro deck (AJ-D250) via firewire. When trying to capture get a large black box with an error message at the bottom saying, "Waiting for Timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when capturing."
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
Have the capture settings on Firewire and DV NTSC.

Thanks for the reply. I tried FireWire Basic in the Device Control selection with no luck.
In the Capture/Input window there are no selections for any DVCPRO NTSC decks, only DV NTSC and DVCPRO HD decks.
I'm wondering if I need to use a third party interface to utilize the DVCPRO AJ-D250.

  • DVC Pro Tape and DV tape not good in Final Cut Pro 5?

I have a DVCPro tape along with a deck as well as a DV tape along with a deck for that.
I started final cut pro and used the NTSC easy setup. I first captured the DVC Pro, when it was done i tried to play it in the viewer and it would play for less then a second then stop. However when i brought it down to the timeline it played fine in the canvas.
So i when ahead a captured the DV tapes onto the same project. When it was completed i tried to play it back using my DV hardware to my TV but i would only see picture and no audio. ALl my settings were correct and the audio would only play on Mbox or the internal speaker in a G5. I thought i had a bad connection but the DVC Pro tape worked fine with audio. So i figured i go back to the DVC File i captured and when i pulled it up in the viewer everything is green and no picture what so ever.
    Can anyone please help

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • DVC Pro 50 dubb with 4 channels of audio on AJHD1200AP deck

I have captured Digi Beta footage at Prores 422HQ with 4 channels of audio using a Kona card through SDI. Is it possible to create a DVC Pro 50 master with 4 channels of audio (the 4 channels in the timeline go to the channels they are assigned to) using firewire. I have never been able to capture any DVC pro 25 or 50 from this deck using firewire. I have only been able to capture HD footage. Also would this be easier if I purchased the HD SDI/SDI optional card?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

maybe this does a better job of explaining:
I edited a film without syncing the sound first, and the video files only had 2 audio channels.  After syncing they have 4, but when I import them back into premiere it only allows me to use to of the audio channels, is there anyway to get them back in to premiere with all 4 channels attached.

  • Please help: DVC pro 50 capturing to QT to FCP

    Hi,
What are the capture specs for best quality DVCPRO50? The DVCpro tapes will be capured elswhere and the client will deliver us a external drive with the files on it.
Offcourse they should be in best quality and not neccesarilly have to be re-rendered in FPC studio. So what's best?
    - Uncompressed Quicktime files? Or are they way to heavy?
    - Or uncompressed avi's? Not previewable... and heavy?
    - Or Quicktime DV pal? Downgrading Quality. So i guess not.
    - Or another codec wich is superb in quality for DVCPRO and light to handle
    - Or the new QT H264?
    Please help

I'm in the midst of a huge doc that was shot on dvc pro 50. The original editor dropped by the wayside, but they had rented a deck and captured all the material as dvcpro50. I inisisted that they back up the 2 disks of material and I've been editing away happily.
DVCpro50 is a digital format and if captured in it's native format, it's as good as it can possibly be.

  • Capturing DVC Pro with firewire

Having some trouble, hope someone has a solution. I am trying to capture footage from DVC Pro 25 into FCP using firewire. FCP 5 does not support DVC Pro 25 anymore, not since ver.3, but I was wondering if there was a way to adjust the capture and sequence settings to make my own setting that would do it right. I have played with the settings a lot and I continue to lose audio sync. It looks good until about 5 min and then progressively loses sync so that at a 25 minute end of a clip the audio is as much as two seconds out of sync.
I am using a Panasonic AJ-D250 and the firewire card is the AJ-YAD250.
MacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCP Studio, DVC Pro Deck

As the deck controller (in this case, Final Cut Pro) is cueing up the deck for the 'edit' (in this case, a capture), the controller signals the deck as to what frame/field it's on and the deck responds. This happens with a certain frequency (every so many fields/frames), and the capstans in the deck adjust the speed of the tape so the tape is playing the proper frame when the controller tells the recorder (in this case, FCP) to start recording.
FCP5 changed the number of polls the controller made with the deck, effectively doubling the polling. Most decks respond to this very nicely. Pannys don't, so tech support wrote a plug that returns the polling to what existed in FCP4.
As I said, I don't know if this has any effect when you're controlling the deck via FW. But, if you'll Email me at the address in my Profile, I'll send the plug to you. It's a zipped text file that you'll unzip and drop into /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins folder.
I'm doubtful that it will resolve the sync problem you're having, but you're welcome to it.

  • DVC Pro to Beta SP workflow

I have 4 hours of footage shot on DVC Pro 25 NTSC 29.97 that I have to send to a client out of state. It will end up being mastered to Beta SP on Final cut with a Kona card output. He needs me to convert to a format he can work from, he does not have a DVC Pro deck.
I have one of those half rack DVC Pro viewing decks that does not have a firewire out. In theory I could go analog out from that deck, through my DSR-11, then firewire out of that and capture to an external hard drive, then ship that to the client. I only have firewire for input. Just looking at this workflow screams "Multiple Conversions, Lousy Quality!". I can't output to Beta so can't really test the full workflow myself.
So for someone who works with multiple formats, is this a bad plan and should I just resign myself to going to a dub house? Or is there a chance this will work. The final product will be for broadcast, and they will add graphics (I know a problem with DV).
    Thanks

He is editing on FCP, not worried he can see it. I'm more worried about the quality of the video after going through the DVC Pro >analog > DV Firewire > Beta SP conversions. He will output thfough his Kona, I don't have one.
I'd love to be able to ship the tapes and let them capture, but it's not an option. They are in a small town and don't have nearby resources to get DVC Pro eqipment. I'm not running across anyone I know who shoots in DVC Pro, and renting a deck would run about the same as dropping off and getting the tapes dubbed.
Will probably try a test run tonight and see what the video looks like if I take in in through my decks.

  • 35mm, DigiBeta or DVC Pro HD (1080/60i)???

    Looking for some guidance .......
we edited a short file that was originally shot on 16mm, but the filmmaker decided to transfer it to DV cam for some unknown reason. We logged and captured with a DV deck and naturally assumed that the final output would be DV cam again. But now the filmmaker advised that it is needs be in either 35mm, DigiBeta or DVC Pro HD (1080/60i) for their screening.
We know already that 35mm is crazy expensive. How would go about Digibeta or DVC Pro HD? Can we rent a deck? Any idea how much? Or is it better to burn to DV tape and do an outside transfer? If you need futher details, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or aol IM at paknyc
    Thanks,
    joeyngloria

well of course that's the cheapest and easiest way to go but you shot FILM! It deserves much better treatment that a DVCam xfer.... but if ya don't have the $$$$ then that's another story.

  • DVC PRO HD

WHat is the best way to do a DVC PRO HD Project. Do I down convert and digitize...can I hook up a HD DV deck via firewire and dig HD DV in the DV NTSC doing an "offline"
It seems that the HD DV deck will only let me dig in the same format as the source tape. Is this correct?

When you come in via FireWire, you're actually "capturing", not digitizing. Which means you're pulling in the video stream as it exists digitally on tape. Which means you can't change the format.
To digitize in SD from an HD source, you'd need a capture card with the ability to do on the fly down convert, like a Decklink or Kona card.
I just capture and edit in DVCProHD if that's my source. If the final result is supposed to be SD, I down convert on output.

  • FCE and DVC Pro

Can FCE only work in the DV format? I have a Panasonic DVC Pro VTR deck with a Firewire card. Although Capture in FCE can see and control the deck it will only capture a few seconds and then I get a message telling me there may be a problem with the data on my tape. This is happening with all my tapes.
Please be gentle, I am new to Final Cut and just finding my feet. Thanks in advance...

I am using DVCPRO 25 and the tapes are all original DVC Pro camera shooting masters. I must admit to only using the front Firewire port, but as I have had no problems with capturing via this port from miniDV tapes or DV format DVC Pro tapes I assumed I would have no issues.
I will do all that is suggested. I have no anti virus software. It certainly recognizes the deck. It sees the deck in System Preferences and I can certainly control the deck, mark in and out points, it picks up the timecode etc. I think one major problem is that I just don't know FCE enough to know what settings are set right or wrong...I think it will take me a while of trial and error unless someone pops up with a 'Setting up FCE for DVC Pro 25' advice list.
    Thanks again.

  • Fcp Configuration for import Dvc Pro Pal

    hi,
I have to import Dvcpro rush PAL (shot on panasonic agx100) into fcp.
I read that Panasonic Dvcpro use color space 4:1:1 even under Pal.
after first test import by choosing dvpal in FCP, the Red color seems to be very strong in pictures.
so i'd like to know if FCP reconitze automatically dv of dvcpro format in Pal, and what cofiguration should i choose?

As you mentioned in your previous post, DVC Pro uses 4:1:1 color sampling. DV is 4:1:0, so it is probably a good idea to recapture those tapes.
The easiest way would be to make your dv clips offline and then do a batch capture with the DVC Pro settings. This will grab exactly the same clips automatically, freeing you up to do something else.
Post back if you need assistance on batch capturing.

    Hi Flore
This a huge debate. There are very few advantages to the new AVCHD camera's and the vgery long list of negative aspects of AVCHD camera's outweighs any usefulness of them. They are designed for Grandad to pick up and shoot good quality pictures and not for editing.
I have posted below the wiki address for AVCHD, please read the page. It is very important you do read it. It explains in depth about AVCHD.
I feel the is no real place for the hard drive based AVCHD camera. There is a place for a mini-dv tape based camera.
Life will be very hard if you go the Hard-drive camera route. Stay with tape.
Tape is cheap, hardy and easy to move around. Hard drives not so!!!
Take some time to read the following wikipedia page...PLEASE READ THIS PAGE!!!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD
You will see that AVCHD is not all the bee's knee's.
I personally hope it dies an extremly painful agonising drawnout death.
AVCHD has no place in the professional domain.
