Capture options for Macbook

Hi,
I tried searching for an answer to this but couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.
How do you capture on a Macbook? There's only one firewire port and you're not supposed to capture to your startup drive/same drive FCP is running from. The posts I've read state that it isn't ideal to share two devices (an external Hard Drive) on a single firewire port. Wouldn't I run into problems capturing from my camera to an external firewire drive when both are connected to the computer via a hub?
I used to use a PowerMac which had two Firewire ports...
Thanks in advance,
Pete

Thanks guys. I just picked up a Western Digital external drive and was wondering why it had two firewire connections on the back. Now I know. They should really do this for USB devices.
I'll give this a shot and see how things go. It's a little odd how Apple positions itself as a leader in editing video for the consumer with such a limitation on ALL of it's consumer based computers???
For the iMac, they need to shrink the insides so there's room for a second HD. Especially with the benefits of SATA and their dropping prices. That and an upgradeable video card but I'm really dreaming there.
I can accept that they wouldn't see a MacBook as a video editor and pass on the expansion card slot. Like that would ever happen in the first place.
I'm not looking forward to firewire based speeds for editing in FCP... I'm starting to miss my tower, oh well.
Thanks again,
Pete

  • Finance options for macbook pro

I am planning to purchase a macbook pro and was looking into possible finance options and found the finance option on the apple website the only problem is it mentioned something about a loan so does this mean if I was to go for the finance option on a £1700 macbook pro and never missed a payment I would be repaying the 1700 and a bit on top even if I never missed a payment.
In other words I only want to choose finance if I only have to repay what I borrow with no interest on top.

Credit Cards... yes. Because they're a "revolving door" when it comes to credit. A loan on the other hand, is not.
I'd say in the case of a "loan" there's going to be some level of interest. The financing options for US customers is different than the payment plans they offer in the UK. I encourage you to visit this website for more details on how the program works-
    http://www.apple.com/uk/financing/consumer/faq.html
Judging by the FAQ, there's definitely going to be some interest. It would appear as though that information is not public (at least on their website) so you'll need to call in for more details and specifics.

  • External monitor options For Macbook Pro(2011)

Just curious as to what my monitor options are as a external monitor for the Macbook Pro.  I'm pretty much set on 27'' thunderbolt display but its a hefty price to swallow...
Best buy has some good deals on there 27'' monitor but can i get the same resolution and clarity from other brands that will be eqivalent to Apple?
I'd like to stay in the 27'' to 30'' size...
    thanks

Any other options like Samsung, LG etc... that offer the same specs as the thunderbolt display?
    Thanks

  • Best external RAID option for MacBook Pro

I have been searching for an external RAID enclosure/solution to use with my MacBook Pro (with Thunderbolt). I would like to use Thunderbolt, but if Firewire 800 provides a more reliable solution than any of the Thunderbolt solutions I will go with the more stable options.
I have looked at a variety of options, and it appears the following are the top runners for a solution, any thoughts on any of these options:
Get a Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt array
The reliability of this unit really worries me, and if it failed as frequently as some are indicating, it could be busy nearly all the time recovering if I had 6+GB of content on the thing when it failed
Advantage of this unit is I could get enough capacity in one chassis to hold me for a fair length of time
The big disadvantage, if this thing fails as frequently as some indicate, restoring 6+GB of content to the thing does not sound fun
Get one of the Thunderbolt, OS X Software RAID boxes, (the likes of G-Tech, and Western Digital)
The use of the OS to manage the RAID array worries me, how is performance, how easy is it to replace a faulty drive and have the OS detect the new drive and start the rebuild process?
How long will it take to rebuilt a failed disc in the 2 to 3TB range?
Use the Firewire 800 port on a CalDigit VR 2 two drive RAID 1 mirror set
This seems to have fairly decent reviews, although there is not a lot of end user reviews that I have found
It will take at least three of the largest unit CalDigit makes to handle my images and have room for new images
Clearly Firewise will not be as fast as the Thunderbird devices
Get the CalDigit VR 2 but try to use the USB3 connection
CalDigit has a USB 3 card that can fit in the 17" MacBook Pro, but I have no idea how well the USB 3 card works with the MacBook Pro?
USB 3 does not daisy chain, the CalDigit card has two ports, however, if you have more than two external arrays you are still in a mood of swapping external drives
Drobo is coming out with Thunderbolt solutions
The bare box is pricey, add four or five large drives and there is some serious money in the thing
There are lot's of reports of failures and inability to rebuild, etc., on the Drobo
    The OWC Quad interface QX2
A fair number of reports of failures on this device
Little information on rebuild speed in event a drive needs to be replaced
I am not very interested in a NAS, even with GigaBit Ethernet the performance will not be as good as direct attached
I do have a 3 year old Mac Pro that is under utilized, I could add more storage and even a RAID controller card for an external enclosures, but again, trying to edit images and/or videos across the network may not be a viable option
Any other ideas, something KNOWN to be good, with minimal failures, and when it does fail it rebuilds quickly and safely
The last piece of the solution is ideally a solution that is fairly low noise.
Any suggestions, direct end user experience, etc., would be greatly appreciated

    What a list
    Well, take a look at CalDigit's HDPro2 8TB (supporting RAID 5 and 6)
    http://www.CalDigit.com/store.asp#HDPro2
It's more expensive than others but works with your MacPro thorugh PCIe connection and very reliable comparing to others.
or a cheaper HDOne 8TB in RAID 5/6

  • Capture Cards for MacBook

I want to video tape my Xbox games, and I'm wondering which capture card would be the best for a Mac computer and what do I also need to use it. Thanks

    Hi B2,
I'm not sure how you would use your Mac computer to capture Xbox 360 gameplay but I've heard that the AVerMedia devices work great for this in general.

  • Capture cards for macbooks

I am looking for a capture card or a device the I can stream live gameplay from my ps3/tv to my mac so I can live stream it to a website like ustream or mogulus. I have been looking for a device but I don't know what works. Does anybody know what im looking for? I'm not sure if video for mac lets me stream it live to a site.

Look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09.

  • Is there a key on the MacBook Pro to toggle display options for a projector

I have had some difficulty getting my InFocus projector to consistently work correctly with my MacBook Pro. Is there a key on the MacBook Pro that toggles the options for projector display? There was one on my last MacBook and my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

No, there is no longer a key to control external display modes (it's F7 on my 1st gen MBP, but the option was removed along with the embedded numeric keypad in the Early 2008 models). There's not a substitute keyboard shortcut (with the exception of installing a macro player like Keyboard Maestro). Your main option is System Preferences > Displays (as stated, ticking the box to show Displays in the menu bar provides a helpful shortcut).

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

if my external hard drive is not connected to either of my machines, and I download something onto my iMac and then something different onto my Macbook, where are my machines going to be storing the new downloaded media
when the drive is not connected, +iTunes media folder location+ will default back to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music/iTunes/iTunes music (or media)
and when I next connect the external hard drive how will I easily get the newly downloaded media onto the external HD
you'd have to point +iTunes media folder location+ back to the external via preferences > advanced > iTunes media folder location, then file > library, organize library > consolidate files
and essentially, to have it easily readable on both machines?
in that case it might be best to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external. then, on each machine, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes can access the iTunes library @ a time !
also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

My settings/preferences did not come over and I do not have the same style options for my signature.  It now only allows me three options and the style I have been using for the last year is not there.  How do I add additional options and get my preferred signature style back?

    Hi Amanda ,
Which version of Acrobat are you using?
Which signature style are you talking about?
You can go ahead and try uninstalling and reinstalling it and see if that works for you .
Use the cleaner tool to uninstall it .Here is the link.
Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs
You can refer to the following link to re install it .

  • No option for "Airplay" in "Display setting on MacBook Pro; Where else is this option?

Trying to mirror MacBook Pro to Apply TV. Under "Display" settings there is no option for "Airplay". Even after a software update, such option was not visible. Where else can I find an Airplay option on my Mac OS X version 10.7.5.
    - I set up Apply TV with my iPhone and I had no problems
    - I already turned on "Airplay" settings on Apple TV
    - However I am unable to find the "Airplay" option on my MacBook Pro
         - I opened up my "System Preferences"
         - Clicked on "Display"
              * On and Off "Airplay" option is nowhere to be found.

    Hey JenLeb16,
I am not sure what version of MacBook Pro you are running, but as long as you have a MacBook Pro that is an early 2011 as well as running OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) then you should be able to do that. Take a look at the article below for more information.

I have a Macbook pro Retina display, I have a small nick in my screen that is annoying especially when watching videos. What is my best option for fixing it?/does apple care apply?

Did you cause the nick? Or did it just appear one day? There are reports of the retina screen having exploding pixels which leaves a hole in the screen that can be felt when you rub your finger across it. If that is what happened then it should be covered under the warranty. If you caused the nick then it is not covered and the fix will be very expensive, somewhere in the $1000 range.
