Capture playback is fast then slow

I have read similar posts, but no real answers.
I capture video from my mini dv camera and when i play the video back and try and edit it starts off too fast then slows to a crawl. When I stop the video it jumps back a few frames like it is jumping to a keyframe (it has no keyframes).
I am editing on a brand new mac pro. it is dual quad core with 6gb of ram. i can't imagine that the system can't keep up. i know people like to blame the graphics board, but i have 512mb of video ram. my pc with the same amount of video ram plays back just fine. my laptop with less video ram plays back just fine. I am using CS3
is there some setting i need to adjust?

My Adobe notes page http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM includes information on my computer
I have never had a crash with this computer (or with the slower one I replaced) which I think is at least partly due to picking a well designed motherboard and not trying to overclock
Mine is not the fastest there is today... so when I'm rendering from video to DVD I just start the process and go to bed... and when I wake up in the morning, the job is done and the .ISO is ready to burn to DVD
Someday, when Windows 7 is at SP1 or SP2 and Premiere is certified for Win7 64bit, and the price of the Intel i7 has come down, I will build another computer for 4-6 times the speed I have now
I will, again, pick a motherboard that has good reviews (maybe another Intel... maybe Asus... maybe ???) and most likely another ATI video card (I have had better results with ATI -vs- nVidia) and I will NOT overclock the CPU or memory!!!

  • Is select from view faster then select from table..???

    Hello Gurus,
I want to query some data from two tables, both of table have many columns (attributes) and many rows...
I use several where clauses to retrieve data from those tables..
witch one is faster, I create a view or I just "select" from those tables???

Views are simply queries and like queries there are fast and slow ones.I disagree.
First of all, to use a view you are executing a query to get a result set, then accessing the data from that result set - a built-in extra step to perform to get data.First of all that entire explanation of how views work is not correct. The optimizer will rewrite the query to make the view go away if possible.

Second, when accessing the data from the view the result sets don't have indexes for fast lookups and efficient joins on later steps. This is also known as just making stuff up and is not how the database works. care to share any references at all for any of this?
    >
Third, the systems I've seen that use views extensively - I am looking at one now - tend to perform joins on views using the same tables with the same data over and over. This is a design issue and not specifically a problem with views but they lend themselves to this misuse much too easilyCorrect as I said a view is just a query, and just like queries there are good fast views and bad slow views
    >
I'll concede that the problem is not specifically with views themselves but as I just said they lend themselves to misuse. Tuning views of views and views joined to views is difficultYes, queries can be misused as can almost all SQL functions and functionality.
As I said - Views are simply queries and like queries there are fast and slow ones.
Nothing that you have posted that is accurate changes that.

  • Export progress bar speeds to 50% then slows way down

While I'm here browsing for answers to another question I just asked, thought I would ask another one about a project I worked on at home...
    Home computer specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II 6-core 3.2ghz processor (overclocked to 4ghz)
    16gb 1600mhz RAM
    Nvidia GTS 450
Plenty of hard drive space, all 7200rpm internal
So my problem is with exporting...  I was working with a 30 minute wmv file...and really all I did as far as editing goes...was cut off about 5 minutes from the beginning.  That's it.  No graphics, no effects...nothin.
So I proceed to export it as a wmv, I used stock settings because I honestly didn't care about the quality, I just wanted it done fast.  Estimated file size was less than 100mb I think...  The export process began
and speedily finished 50% of it in about 10 seconds and then slows to a crawl, where the time remaining was now going up 1 second at a time instead of down.  By how slow it was going, it was probably going to
take about a half hour, which is bs for exporting to a crappy file type with low quality settings.  My work comp has lower specs than this computer, and it exports 30 minutes of my avchd footage in the same amount
    of time...
This seems like Premiere has an issue with certain file types here.
    Any help?

yah i was thinking the same thing, the 2 pass is what is causing your timing dilemma, 50% was just the first pass analysis. The rest is the real rendering process.
Being crappy video with a crappy codec has nothing to do with speed, if anything it is going to make it slower. You didn't say how long it actually took to render out your video? With WMV i am guessing it is not multithreaded well and not using all 6 of your cores. try turning off maximum quality on your encoder and check your wmv settings, it is just a container and gives you lots of codec choices. it certainly is not the fastest thing out there but it appears you are being forced to use it anyways?

  • Time machine starts well, and then slow as cold molasses

    Hi All,
I've scoured the net for clues, but no love.
I've set up a new external drive for TimeMachine. I created a single partition with Disk Utility, formatted as HFS+ and told TM to use it for backups.
Clicked go. Yay! Lots of data cruising along and after a short while 40GB of the 90GB backup is copied over.
And then it stops... almost. Now it copies new data over at about 1mb per minute. Checked "top" and very little activity going on. Checked console and it reports no failures of backupd and in fact backupd uses a bit of CPU time every minute or so.
In the last hour, about 80mb of data has been copied. I've opened the backup package file and am watching as each new file is copied over.
I've shut everything down more than once and restarted. When I tell it to back up, it knows where it left off... does a lot of disk churning and then begins it's crawling copy again.

Thanks for the replies. I've read about how it starts slow and later gets into a groove and picks up, but mine starts fast and flies along nicely and then grinds to a halt. I can open the package file and watch as a new file (say a 5mb video clip) gets backed up every minute or so.
During the slow time, I can copy large files onto the drive quickly and easily, so it's not the drive, or the usb connection.
Can TM go from fast to slow and back to fast? I guess I'll let it run overnight and report my results...

  • How to convert .mp3 or wma to m4b to player faster or slower in ipod

Hi, is there an application for the mac or even the pc, where I can take my medical class lectures were are 2 hours in length and convert a wma or mp3 to a audiobook file so they can be played in the ipod at a faster or slower rate? I read that I can put them in itunes and change it to aac and then change the m4a to m4b and the files will be as an audiobook which can be played blacker at a faster rate on my ipod. It didn't work. I have audio books that I bought from audible.com and they play at a faster or slower rate, I would love this feature for the lectures that I record from my class. Is this possible?
Thank in advance for all your help.

I use iSquint to convert the .flv to .mp4.
Then AudioExtract to rip the audio off (in AIFF format).
I add the new file to iTunes and convert it to .mp3, sometimes.
It's all freeware, but it'll ask you every time to donate or purchase.
There are no restrictions on iSquint.
There is a 3 file limit on AudioExtract. But all you have to do is quit after the first one and open it again.
Before I had AudioExtract, I'd import the .mp4 into iMovie and put in in a movie file and extract audio that way.

  • Is lightroom 3 really more fast then 2.5

    Hi
    i have a question
    i bought lightroom 1.4.1
i tried lightroom 2.x and the beta version 3
but i did not find more fast then the 2.x version
do you find the beta3 more fast then 2.x?
    i'm under xp and vista
    thanks

Interactive performance is improved (e,g. scrolling thumbnails in Grid view and switching from module to module). However, preview rendering and export are slower.

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, run these two commands (copy & paste each one separately and hit the return key):
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
at the Password: prompt, type in your admin password, carefully since nothing displays on the screen, and hit the return key. These should unlock your drives. You might have to restart.

  • Restarting oracle services through services.msc is faster then shu immdiate

Restarting oracle services through services.msc is faster then manual (sql>shu immdiate), Why
Even If we have large transcation on the oracle database But we can restart the database within minutes by using services.msc But It will take more time in command prompt(sql>shu immediate). So shall we assume here that services.msc is using shut abort command while restarting the database?

  • Is 802.11b/g faster then 802.11g

The wireless network I have at my house has two Powerbook G4s (Both with Airport Extreme Cards) connected to it and I am wondering if Switching to 802.11g is faster then 802.11b/g. I dont have any computers connecting that need 802.11b.
    Thnx

OK, Just to give you an idea about the difference between the 2.
If you are accessing the internet and downloading things and only have a DSL connection or just ordinary dial up then you may just as well set your Macs to 'b'. Signal/Bandwidth strength is greater with 'b'. Most dial up is '56k' and mmost DSL is 512 to 2mbs. So just using 11b is more than plenty. But if you have DSL from 8 up to 24meg speeds then 'g' is what you should use. But remember that the '54' speed is only the transfer / communication speed between 2 points. You can transfer a large file say a CD of music from one iTunes on one Mac to another Mac (example) and use 11g. You could of course double this by using a ethernet connection between the 2 Macs at 100mbps or even Firewire at 400 ot 800.
So in a nutshell use 'g' if you are transfering large data file and need to minimize time. But then of course you will do what suits your environment best.
    Cheers

  • Will Yosemite Make My Computer Faster or Slower?

I have been holding off for quite a while when Yosemite came out.  I tried the beta, but quickly reverted back to Mavericks because of that pesky expand button.  That's not why I'm here though.  I need to know if and when I download Yosemite again, will it make my 2011 MBP 13 inch faster or slower?  I heard Yosemite is a RAM hog, but I have 16 GB of RAM, so I don't think that should be an issue.  What do you all think?  I can give more information on the system if you need.
Edit: I should also mention I plan on using the computer mainly for gaming.  It responds well to most games already, but can have (very small) issues if running skyrim or other higher quality 3D games.

I heard Yosemite is a RAM hog,
That is a misconception propagated by people who do not understand that Apple memory management changed with OS 10.9 Mavericks. For more efficient use of RAM, Mavericks and Yosemite now claim a lot of the free RAM for faster access. This Apple article may help you understand it:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
The new metrics for evaluating RAM usage are Swaps and Memory Pressure as shown in the little chart at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window when you have the "Memory" tab selected.
Within the last six weeks, I upgraded two of our Macs to Yosemite and see no difference in performance from the prior OS versions installed: 10.9 on a 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pro and 10.8 on a 2011 iMac. Both have the entry-level processors for their respective models, the 2.5Ghz i5.
Neither computer has third-party anti-virus maintenance software, not do that have the questionable software that comes bundled with "name-brand" external hard drives.

  • Re speeding up track then slowing down

    Hi..
I have a battery toy ... which I have recorded the sound from. This goes on to an animation and I need the track to distort and speed up and then slow down as for winding down... any help please would be very welcome.
Also it goes underwater from time to time.....

Go to applications > utilities > activity monitor
Sort them by cpu usage and if there are programs that are taking up a massive amount of cpu, then you should quit those apps. If you are watching videos on the internet (especially youtube videos) that will take up a lot of cpu.
