Capture question, obvious newbie

Camera: Canon HV20, shot in 1080 (not 24p)
FCP 6.0
New to FCP, but have captured successfully after running Easy Setup for 1080i, Basic Firewire. Clips are in Apple Intermediate Codec when I look at info.
I'd like to capture in Apple ProRes 422, but don't see any Easy Setup for this. There is a seperate folder 'Additional Final Cut Pro Easy Setups' that shows (what I assume to be the proper setup) 'Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 60i 48kHz.fcpre'. How do I use that one, if that is the proper one? I appreciate you getting me pointed in the right direction, thanks.

Without a capture card, you can't capture to ProRes... i.e. it won't work via firewire. You can capture native HDV however, and render in ProRes... it's in the sequence settings' Processing tab. Least expensive way to capture to ProRes is probably a decklink Intensity, but your camera must have an HDMI output to use that card...

  • Capturing Question #1

    Hi. I have two capturing questions that I could really use some help with, I'll keep them seperate.
    Since downloading the new FCP update I have had a new warning before capturing and I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do about it. Quoted as follows:
    WARNING: You are about to capture drop-frame media to a non
    drop-frame clip. If you proceed, you may experience changes in
    logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of
    master clip relationships.
    Cancel OK
    I just don't know as much as I should about this stuff. Not even what other info you guys might need. I'm capturing Firewire from a Sony TRV-22 to a 250GB external LaCie.
    Thanks,
    Ariel.
    Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FCP 5.1.2, QT 7.1.3, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM

    The difference is in the TIMECODE. Somehow you have a batch of clips that have been logged with NON-DROP timecode...the : separators are all colons ":" that indicate that the footage logged was NDF TC. Drop frame separators look the same, but the last one is a SEMI colon ";" indicating drop frame code.
    Re-log that tape and you should be good to go.

  • An HD newbie's stupid capturing question

    We finally got an HD camera - a Sony HVR V1E (the Pal model, so 25fps) HDV1080i - and upgraded to Final Cut Studio, so this relates to FCP 5.1.4.
    I just captured around 20 min of footage, and what seems to have happened is that it has all been saved as separate clips. I'm not sure I mind particularly - I suppose it's a bit of a shortcut - but I used to do this manually anyway with subclips, keeping the convenience of one big block of video if I wanted to scrub through it quickly.
    I just wondered if I can switch this feature off, and if so how? Capturing regular DVCam seems to record as one block still.

    This is the nature of HDV. It makes new clips when you start and stop the camera. This is because the GOP (groups of pictures) format, which is how it records footage to tape, was broken when you stop the camera.
    This is normal for HDV.

  • Video Capture Question

    I have a pretty basic question.  I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for the past few weeks and am positive this was an excellent purchase.  It does what I need and more (I have taken several tutorials and understand basic functions fairly well).  For my old data which was recorded on Mini-DV format (the new stuff is 1080P on SSD so it does not apply for my new stuff), my basic question is will capturing in CS5 using the DV out of my old camcorder provide the "same, better or lesser" results compared to using a specialized hardware converter.  I will most likely get a response of "it depends", but would like guidance for those that have used CS5.  I have used a hardware converter in the past with OK results.
    Sorry for the newbe question, but would like a quick response if anyone has time.  BTW - my PC is new build for video editing, has plenty of power and I do have mercury playback capability.
    Thanks in advance.

    I also have RCA jacks on the camera, however, no matter how good the A/D converter is (if using the RCA jacks), the firewire will still be the best.
    Well, you basically have two different things there--yes, it's one camera, but you can use it to do two different things.
    On one hand, if you have miniDV tapes, the Firewire is the only connection you'll use. At that point, you're not transferring video in the traditional sense, but rather you're effectively copying from the tape to your hard drive. Whatever is on the miniDV tape is the same as what you will end up with on the hard drive. The analog connections (the RCA jacks) won't be used for this process at all. So if you're talking about DV video, it's as good as it gets.
    On the other hand, if you have some sort of analog tape like VHS or Hi8, you need to have an A/D converter between the tape deck and the computer--this is where the analog connections on the camera would come in to play. The basic map in this case is:
    Analog deck -> RCA cable (or other analog connection) -> DV camera as an A/D converter -> 1394 cable (Firewire) -> computer
    In this case, the better the analog signal is that you feed to the A/D converter, the better the captured digital video would look. Obviously, there are all sorts of variables here--playback deck, type of analog connections, quality and features of the A/D converter, and the DV codec itself--you can control some of those, and some you really can't, depending on what you have access to. If you're not dealing with analog video, though, you don't have to worry about any of this

  • Out of my League- video capture question.

    I'm strictly an amateur here, so don't assume much prior knowledge. I just bought a nifty little video camera called the Hawk Eye nature cam, to be installed as a spy cam in a squirrel house (long story...!). It even has a little IR lighting system built in for low light situations - pretty cool. Its output is RCA jacks, white and yellow, which work nicely directly plugged into the TV.
    Obviously, what I'd like is to get this feed to my computer, preferable eventually to be recorded/edited. I picked up a video DVR capture device, but being unaware that there was software involved, I did not check for Mac compatibility and found one that is not Mac compatible. It was quite inexpensive - go figure. ( Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/SABRENT-USB-AVCPT-Creator-Capture-Adapter/dp/tech-data/B00 11N9QNC/ref=deasmtd )
    Questions:
    1) might I be able to find 3rd party software that would let this capture device work for me? ( when I check my "about this mac" with the device plugged into the usb, it recognizes it as a video capture device.
    2) If not, I have an EyeTV hybrid unit, which I used to use when I could get free network TV (yes, really, just through the Air!) but now sits idle since none of the digital signals are strong enough to use here. Is there some way that I can use its hardware or software to reach my goal? Would this require the "RF modulator" that I see, which converts rca to the coax that goes into the EyeTV?
    3) Would I be better off just purchasing a different video capture device, specifically compatible with Mac? Recommendations?
    4) Other issues I don't know about? format compatibilities, etc??
    Many thanks - this is probably stuff most of you can do in your sleep!

    Your Hawk Eye outputs a composite video signal (the yellow RCA connector). There are basically two ways you could connect this to your Mac -
    1 - get an analog-digital converter (like the Canopus ADVC-110 ) or
    2 - get an inexpensive miniDV camcorder that supports analog-digital passthrough and use it as your converter
    In both cases you could use iMovie or Final Cut Express to capture your video. However you might find it useful to record from the Hawk Eye to a miniDV camcorder and later capture just the sections you want.
    The little device you found on Amazon (and similar ones elsewhere) are not going to work. (Technical discussion available if you want to know why.)
    The EyeTV Hybrid would require an RF modulator, as you guessed, and it would really mess with the video quality, so I don't recommend it.

  • Spool Error capture question

    Hi,
    I am trying to spool data from tables into flat files. I am using the following scripts to accomplish it
    1. A cmd file (windows) that makes a call to a sql file
    2. The SQL file which generates another query file at the run time, depending upon the table name passed to it
    3. The run time query file , that executes the final query and spools the data into a txt file | delimited
    For eg:
    Actual command passed C:\Spool_utility\spool_utility TABLE_NAME
    Eg of the spool utility file :
    @echo off
    SET dbuser=XX@YY
    SET dbpw=xxxx
    echo %date% - %time% - Start > %1%log.txt
    echo START
    sqlplus -s %dbuser%/%dbpw% @spool_utility.sql %1>%1.txt
    echo %date% - %time% - Done >> %1%log.txt
    echo DONE
    Eg of the spool_utility.sql
    set echo off
    SET newpage 0
    SET feedback off
    SET linesize 32767
    set pagesize 0
    SET wrap off
    SET recsep off
    SET con off
    SET trim on
    SET trims on
    set verify off
    SET doc off
    SET termout off
    SET arraysize 5000
    SET HEADING off
    set colsep "|"
    spool &1.sql;
    Prompt Select * from &1 where some condition
    spool off
    set termout ON
    @ &1
    EXIT
    The above file generates a table_name.sql file with the actual table name at run time and gets executed and the output is written to the table_name.txt file.
    This works perfectly fine. But the issue is when someone passes some wrong table name or if there is a actual run time error while executing the query , the error with details itself itself gets written to the end spool file.
    For eg : if i do this just to generate an error and execute it from command line, the query generates an error and writes the error to the spool file , but at the command prompt where I executed the command I do not see any error and the process seems to have run perfectly well
    set xxx on xxx off as above
    spool &1.sql;
    Prompt Select * from &1 where rownum><10---this will cause the issue
    spool off
    set termout ON
    @ &1
    EXIT
    Eg of spool file generated :
    from     table_name WHERE rownum><=10 *
    ERROR at line 62:
    ORA-00936: missing expression
    My question is, is there any way i can capture this runtime error and return this error to my calling sql script spool_utility.sql and then propagate it to the calling command file and do some tasks for eg removing the spool file and writing the actual error to a log file . Basically any way to know at my OS calling level that the entire spooling operation was unsuccessful.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
    Querying the data dictionary will work only when the issue is a invalid table name. My question is can i capture any run time error, not only incorrect table name.
    If there is any run time error (for eg the one I showed where I used a >< sign which is a invalid operator) the error gets written to my spool file, but there is no way I am able to capture that in my calling sql script and subsequently in the calling command file so that I can do something with the error. For eg if a spool file may get written with error messages, some batch process or user may pick up the spool file and start processing which i dont want to happen. i would like to trap that error or at least be notified of the error at my outer calling sql file or outer command file level, so that I can write the error to a log file and delete the erroneous spool file etc.

  • Premiere 1.5.1 HDV capture questions ( Can't render, can't open in after effects )

    I downloaded the patch which allowed Premiere Pro 1.5 to work with HDV footage. I hooked up my Canon XL1s and captured the footage. Everything seemed to be working fine. I moved into After Effects to begin doing some work  on a shot, and After Effects would not open the .avi, I would get an error that read "No such compressor exists" ( Or very close to it ). I thought perhaps AE would not open the file type so I went back into Premiere to render out a quicktime or something familiar. However, premiere pro would only allow me to export files as CineForm, which AE does no recognize. I don't understand what the problem is, why can't I export my captured footage from Premiere as a quicktime, or jpeg sequence, etc?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the welcome, Eddy!
    I should have mentioned the Media Encoder, sorry about that. I am using the Adobe Media Encoder, but for some reason I am only getting streaming options when I try to export a quicktime file. Not HD formats. Also, I tried an mpeg 2 export but windows media player played the  file without an image and after effects would not import it. I'm sure there is some obvious reason this is occuring, but I'm new to HD editing/compositing and I can't seem to get my head around it.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Drop-Frame vs. Non-Drop-Frame Capture question

    Hi,
    I'm using Final Cut Pro 5 capturing 16:9 anamorphic video and removing an advanced 24 frame pulldown from my Canon XL-2. This is for a documentary for which I have captured over 30 full tapes of footage. I've been logging in the clips FIRST, then going back and batch capturing everything afterwards.
    My question is this: I have logged everything the same way with seemingly all the same settings. However, when I capture some tapes I get the warning that I'm capturing Non-Drop frame media to a Drop-Frame clip and it could cause problems in the future with relinking. Then some tapes don't give me that message at all. Is there something I'm not noticing about how I log some tapes but not others? Would it have to do with the presets I have Final Cut set to when I'm capturing a tape? I'm fairly positive I've always setup FCP to the proper capture settings before logging anything...but could something else be causing this? Thanks for your help.
    -JD

    The thing to watch out for, both in logging and in capturing, is when you log or capture multiple tapes with mixed NDF & DF timecode.
    There are three or four things that can affect this:
    FCP5 and later allow you to set the TC format of the capture preset, such that the Log & Capture window would default to NDF if you are working with NDF tapes.
    Otherwise, Log & Capture will still auto-detect during playback when logging, but you have to be sure to play the tape some before logging the clip. If you capture multiple tapes using capture now, You could easily start recording before the time code format updates. This kind of error results in a clip whose in point is the correct "number", but the format is wrong.
    During Batch Capture, the device control is not always able to change the time code format. I'm not sure about FCP6, but I am in the habit of grouping my clips in batches according to the TC format. You ma be seeing this alert because you are switching the TC format of the tapes in the batch capture, but device control is "stuck" in DF mode, for instance. This is not an issue during logging, only capture.
    I think it may also be possible to override the clip's logged TC format at capture by unchecking "use logged clip settings".
    Capturing clips with the wrong TC format can really mess up recapture later. The offset that happens as the format gets converted back increases as the starting hour of the timecode gets bigger.
    So basically you can have clips that get logged wrong, and clips that were logged correctly, but captured with the wrong TC. It's easier to miss it when logging, since there's no alert message to pop up. But the other alert is there to tell you there is a mismatch somewhere, preventing you from making the second kind of error. Your only error may only be that you had both DF and NDF clips in the same batch.
    There is a trick to get the TC format to switch to the non-default for batch capture - Open Log & Capture and play the tape until you see the TC format update. Now start the batch capture with Log & Capture still open - device control will stay in that TC format now. Otherwise, I think device control switches to the format of the first clip in the batch, but stays there until you cancel and start a new batch.

  • Oracle/VB question - same newbie different question.

    Hi,
    I've just learned the magic that is getting VB to call stored procedures in Oracle - but now I have a question.
    I have a procedure that runs through a table, this is the loop part :
    loop
    fetch staff_c into surname_str, first_str, salary_str;
    exit when staff_c%notfound;
    dbms_output.put_line('data ' || surname_str || ', ' || first_str || ' - ' || salary_str);
    end loop;
    close staff_c;
    so my question is simply this, I'm using the following VB code to access a stored procedure which is passing a param in, and a param out -
    Dim cmd As ADODB.Command
    Dim conn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim param As ADODB.Parameter
    Set conn = New ADODB.Connection
    conn.Open "dsn=PaulsRescueDB", "x", "y"
    Set cmd = New ADODB.Command
    cmd.ActiveConnection = conn
    cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
    cmd.CommandText = "lang_count"
    Set param = cmd.CreateParameter("@p_in", adVarChar, adParamInput, 10, "english")
    cmd.Parameters.Append param
    cmd.Execute
    MsgBox cmd.Parameters(1).Value
    conn.Close
    what do I need to do in order to be able to treat the result of the stored procedure as a recordset - or am I mis-understanding something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ed.

    Just in case anyone else out there was interested here's a brief summary of the solution.
    First lets look at the stored procedure as this is where the first and most important point is to be seen:
    create or replace package types
    as
    type cursorType is ref cursor;
    end;
    so we're creating a cursor type variable called cursortype, this is then used in the following code:
    create or replace procedure getemps( p_in in varchar, p_cursor in out ref cursor
    as
    begin
    open p_cursor for select surname, firstname
    from staff
    where initcap(p_in) = surname;
    end;
    It should be noted that a cursor is effectively an area of memory specific to your session that stores a result set, the cursor is treated as a variable/object.
    In the case of the above code the cursor contains the result of the select statement.
    You will also notice that the code opens the cursor with the contents of the select (this is because whenever you create an object it is null - unless you give it an initial value).
    The variable P_In is a varchar (when defining a procedure you do not specify the size of an int or varchar) and p_cursor is the returned data.
    I do not know why p_cursor is both in and out, out alone would have been the obvious choice.
    So we now have a stored procedure that takes a parameter to pass to a select statement, does a search and then returns a resultset (cursor).
    Now to answer the original question, how do you use this in VB?
    The code below illustrates (ADO):
    Dim cmd As ADODB.Command
    Dim conn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim param As ADODB.Parameter
    Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
    Set conn = New ADODB.Connection
    conn.Open "dsn=PaulsRescueDB", "x", "y"
    Set cmd = New ADODB.Command
    cmd.ActiveConnection = conn
    cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
    cmd.CommandText = "getemps"
    Set param = cmd.CreateParameter("@p_in", adVarChar, adParamInput, 10, "foghorn")
    cmd.Parameters.Append param
    Set rs = cmd.Execute
    While Not rs.EOF
    Debug.Print (rs.Fields(1).Value & " " & rs.Fields(0).Value)
    rs.MoveNext
    Wend
    conn.Close
    As you can see I am manually creating an ADODB object, specifying that the commandtype is a stored procedure and then appending a parameter to the command text.
    You will also notice that although the cursor is the second parameter in the stored procedure I do not specify it directly but rather assign the ADO recordset object as the result of the ADO command execution.
    Once I've done this I merely use the recordset as a normal recordset object.
    CREDITS:
    The stored procedure is based on the one supplied by Jens Link in the previous post.
    The VB is a hijacked piece of ASP code modfied for VB.
    If this helps anyone else out there besides me then I'm happy to have been able to give something back to the community that has helped me.

  • Trivial Image Capture Question

    Image Capture works just fine for me, when downloading photos from my camera. My question has to do with the thumbnails displayed in Image Capture's window while the photos are being downloaded. In 10.4 there is an abrupt transition from one to the next, as they download, but I recall that 10.3 used the "rotating cube" effect for the same thing. Does anyone know why this disappeared in 10.4 --- or if there is any way to get it back again? Ever since I installed 10.4, I keep thinking I must be missing something about this admittedly trivial feature.
    Can anyone either confirm that the rotating cube effect is indeed gone --- or let me know how to get it back again?

    The feature got lost in translation somewhere. Don't know why--I thought it was kinda neat and rather miss it. Maybe it will reappear somewhere down the line.

  • Sizing question (beware newbie)

    Hi all,
    Here’s a question from a true newbie, I hope it is not
    to ignorant to answer though.
    It might be the case that this question has been addressed
    somewhere in this forum already but that I don’t recognize
    the problem due to terminology, to which I’m still to new.
    The other problem is that don’t have the site online so
    it’s not possible to show it live.
    I’ve tried to make an index page (html) with an image
    in the middle like a bar. On this bar a few buttons are placed.
    When I preview this page in a browser it looks right at first but
    when I use the ctrl button and scroll-wheel, (normally altering the
    text size) it completely changes the size of the size except for
    that bar image. The buttons appear somewhere else on the page. (not
    a pretty picture)
    Is there a way to prevent the use of ctrl combined with the
    mouse scroll-wheel?
    It was told me that using fonts measured as pixels this
    wouldn’t be possible but that didn’t prevent this to
    occur.
    Thanks for any help.
    Kind regards,
    Lexz.

  • Live audio capturing question

    We're using Reflectmedia and a Ultimatte DV. Since the ultimatte DV only captures either S-Video and output Firewire, we have no audio. Therefore, when the receiver of the wireless mic is connected to Digidesign M Box 2, I can hear it on the speaker. However, I can’t seem to log and capture the audio in on Final Cut Pro HD. Is there a way to log and capture the audio using a wireless mic?
    I setup the Capture setting to use the MBox2 instead of the internal audi, or DV Firewire.
    FCP sees the DigiDesign interface in the capture setting. I think that DigiDesign limits the abliliy to record from FCP. However, if FCP is actually recongnizing the interface, why couldn't I use it to capture audio from usb (MBOX2)while video from another firewire source, Ultimatte DV.
    The problem here is, I'm attempting to "Log and Capture" the Ultimatte DV (whick only processes video and not audio), through firewire while I capture audio through another source.
    Thanks for all your effort

    It would be very nice if you people could share some thoughts on a little problem I have.Sure thing.
    I'm gonna try and capture audio from a flash-application (www.delorean.se/mixer) and convert it to a .mp3-file.
    I browsed the web for a few days for a solution and first thought of using The Java Soun API but later read that it doesn't convert to .mp3 :(
    I managed to read and create .wav files with it and it wasn't too difficult at all so it was kind of sad that there's no .mp3 support
    Then I found JMF and saw that it has a mp3 converter plug-in :)Technically, no. JMF has an MP3 plugin that allows JMF to play MP3s, but the plugin does not allow you to create MP3s. Actually, the same plugin allows JavaSound to play MP3s too..
    [http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/media/jmf/mp3/download.html]
    Would the JMF be a good tool to use for my problem?No, because you cannot encode MP3s. Only decode them...
    Does it work like Java Sound API?Not at all.
    Does anyone have any general tips when it comes to capture audio from the web using java? (It feels like I've looked over the whole web and I didn't find anyone trying to do the same thing or someone who has done anything similar in the past)Capturing audio is easy. JavaSound + applet...but if you need to store it as an MP3, you're probably going to want to build an Adobe Flex application.

  • Is JMF the right choice? (audio capturing question)

    Hello everyone!
    It would be very nice if you people could share some thoughts on a little problem I have.
    Then I found JMF and saw that it has a mp3 converter plug-in :)
    These are my questions:
    Would the JMF be a good tool to use for my problem?
    Does it work like Java Sound API?
    Does anyone have any general tips when it comes to capture audio from the web using java? (It feels like I've looked over the whole web and I didn't find anyone trying to do the same thing or someone who has done anything similar in the past)
    I would be so very happy if I could get some answers on these questions!
    Cheers!

    Would the JMF be a good tool to use for my problem?No, because you cannot encode MP3s. Only decode them...
    Does it work like Java Sound API?Not at all.

(It feels like I've looked over the whole web and I didn't find anyone trying to do the same thing or someone who has done anything similar in the past)Capturing audio is easy. JavaSound + applet...but if you need to store it as an MP3, you're probably going to want to build an Adobe Flex application.

  • Pass Through Capturing Question

    Hi Guys-
    I found a post very similar to my question that didn't quite answer it: I'd like to pass through my miniDV camera using a non-controllable device (either my VCR or 8mm analog camera). Usually when I have my AV cables AND firewire connected simaltanously I can get nothing, therefore nothing shows up on the capture screen. I have a Sony miniDV handycam, DCR-TRV 22. Any thoughts? Thanks!
    -Jack

    I take it you've adjusted the settings for your Camera? I use a Sony DCR-PC101 at home and, with the camera in VCR mode, I adjust the menu's VCR SET setting to A/V->DV Out.
    Also, what are you feeding into the camera? In case it's anything that has MacroVision protection - hey, if your clients are like mine, it happens - Sony cameras do not pass those signals thru.
