App to capture high quality video; clip; bulk export high quality?

Our students capture long videos in a high quality format (.DV), then often want to define clips within the movie, and hand them off to Compressor for compression. Unfortunatly, with the changes in Final Cut Pro X, we can find no viable way of doing that, and we've searched for hours in the app and online. The closet we found was to export stems out of the FCPX timeline using Roles:

For simply wanting to define multple clips (no combining of clips involved), this is rather tedious, but moreso, when we use this technique, indeed only the video and audio of the clips we hand off to Compressor is seen and heard, but we end up with video black on both sides of the clip, which greatly lengthens the processing time, not to mention that we then need to trim the dead air afterwards.
We tried using iMovie 11, but unlike one or more previous versions, it is no longer possible to export multiple clips.
We've downloaded Adobe Premiere, and will be testing this.
Is there an OS X app that can capture high quality (.DV?) video/audio, make clips, then bulk export to .DV on disk, that doesn't cost over $500?

I was choppy at my explanation, so let me go a little further. Maybe I do just use a DVD player to play this - but, let me explain further - maybe I'm not doing something right in creating the DVD.
I 'shared' from iMovie to iDvd - and burnt right to a DVD. Again, the movie was shaky on the computer. We played it on a DVD player, still a little shaky.. but not near as noticable - it looked pretty good. BUT - this is when the dvd stopped. I hit play, and it picked up right where it left off. I also was skipping through chapters, and it stopped all of the sudden. I had to go back to the main menu to start over. This was all done on a dvd player. Eventually, we played the rest of the video and it went ok. But, something tells me there might be a glitch in the DVD I created.... ?
Someone mentioned they had problems when exporting/burning right to dvd from iMovieHD. They said they exported out, then dragged the file into iDVD.. is that an option - if so, how would I go about doing that?

Copying/Burning Video Clips from Cmrl DVD w/o Chapters

I've used iDVD to play a cmrl music DVD (without Chapters or menu). I have created video clips that I'd like to copy and burn to a DVD so I can play the
individual songs captured in the video clips. I'm new to OSX and the iDVD
application. I'm willing to buy Toast or MacRipper or other if necessary. Would greatly appreciate any advice anyone would offer. Many thanks, glenn.

You got a miniDV tape - OK
Do You have the Camera - and does it have a FireWire port
same as: (Digital in/out - FireWire (Apple) - IEEE 1394 - i.Link (SONY) - DV Terminal (by Panasonic)
Then connect with a FW-Cable 6-4 pin to Your Mac
Set in Play mode
Start iDVD
Select "OneStep DVD" or "Magic Movie"
Put in a DVD-R disk when prompted.
Sometimes later - Ready !
I use Verbatim DVD-R disks and at an as low x no: as I can get eg x4 (x16 often gives problem
with any brand of DVDs)
OK You've got iDVD08 - Here You can force the burn speed down to x1 in pref-menu. This gives
less errors. I do so.
You can also go via iMovie. Use iMovie HD 6. When ready with edit. Close iMovie and drop or import
Your movie into iDVD. Select block diagram and drop Your movie block into the upper most left box.
Now You'll get a self starting movie. But it will end on the theme You selected.
Selecting an as simple menu is a good advice. I use "Bruched metal"
Select burn.

Need to capture video clip from local news story site.

Does anyone know of a way to capture video clip from an online source for adding to iMovie.
The clip I would like to get is a piece done locally and added to a local news site.

Video on the web can be in many forms - most of which aren't easy to download.
What I do, is use SnapzProX from http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
This lets you capture video (and audio) from your computer screen.
I have seen FLVR mentioned as a way to capture Flash video, but haven't tried it yet. ( http://www.tastyapps.com )
To get the best quality, you can probably buy a tape of the clip from the station at a 'reasonable' price.

Missing in this equation were the version of Premiere Elements that you were using and the computer operating system on which it was running. But...
The deed is done. But.....Until now and after you went ahead and moved to version 12, we now learn what version of Premiere Elements you were using. We still do not know the computer operating system involved.
You just said Premiere Elements 10. Premiere Elements 10 is hit by a serious known display issue if the computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. In this issue, the only remedy is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. The description of the problem and how to do the roll back are described in one of the Announcements at the top of this forum. What video card/graphics card does your computer use?
On another front, Adobe will be releasing a new version of Premiere Elements any day now. No one but Adobe knows the feature set for the new version. That type of information is announced at the moment of release of the new version.
So the remedy to the problem that you presented in this thread could have been...
1. Rolling back the NVIDIA GeForce driver version to about May 2013 if possible (Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, may not be possible)
2. Move to another version of Premiere Elements (which you did)
I offer the above for consideration so that you can review your decisions. We are pleased to learn that Premiere Elements 12/12.1 works for you.

HOW TO CAPTURE DIGITAL VIDEO CLIPS, OPTIONALY WITH WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER

I want to capture video clips and save them on disk, when a certain event occurs.If possible I prefer to do it with labview only. Optionaly to execute a record command on windows movie maker, save with arbitrary file name, and go back to standby mode for the next clip.

Do you have a camera along with the IMAQ hardware? Then, the easiest way is probably using the IMAQ VIs to acquire frames and create avi files out of them. There is some example code on how to grab images using the imaq hardware.

Generating the avi files is fairly straightforward once you know how to acquire images. Lookup the help on the "IMAQ AVI" VIs.
If you have a camera hooked up through USB, you can try the documentation on the following link. I have never used labview with usb cameras though.

Video Not showing in Capture screen, w/ a few other questions.

Ok, so i've used Final Cut Pro HD for awhile. and have never experienced this problem. I recently just purchased a MacBook Pro for editing on the road. And i had to throw a coverage video together really qucikly. So i captured all the video onto my macbook with out the video showing up in the capture window. I've tried nearly everything including audio/video set ups based on my camera and capture method. So when i exported a small web clip you could see the clips, or when playing them in FCP HD you could see the footage. When i made the self-contained version i was not able to see the footage in the clip, and i also couldnt see it when i tried to watch the clips seperately. I tried updates and other methods to try and fix this problem. So basically i need help with figuring out how to get the video importing to show up in the Capture window. As well as how do i get the clips to show up in quick time when i'm trying to watch them outside of FCP! Any help is appreciated thank you!

Hi, I’m also having the same kind problem with my FCP Log and Capture widow
I own a Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5.
I’m using Final Cut Pro HD v4.5.
My input is a Panasonic DV Deck using FireWire 400.
I have recently upgraded to the new Operating System, Mac OS 10.4 (10.4.9) from 10.3.9, Before I upgraded it worked fine but now all I can see is FCP default color bars. FCP “DOES” seem to see the deck because I can make the deck Play, Rewind, Pause, etc. it also knows the time on the tape, But no sound and no video just the color bars.
I have my “audio/video settings” set at “DV NTSC 48 kHz” that is what have always used and I believe is the correct setting.
I believe the problem has some thing to do with the new Operating System but I don't know how to fix it.
I also read some thing that made it sound like it could be some thing rong with Qmaster. any help would be appreciated

Video clips won't play back after capture

I am a long-time user of Premiere Elements, currently using version 9.0. I am capturing video clips from the same videocamera that I've used in previous versions of PE. My video clips won't play back after I capture them. The clip is in my "media" area, but when I try to play it back, the audio plays but the picture remains frozen on the starting image. What is happening?

It is a Sony Handycam DCR-HC28, mini DV, using a firewire connection.
Operating System is Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3, system specs are SATA 2 RAID 1 with dual 1 TB hard drives. 4 GB RAM. As far as how fast my processor is, I looked on my invoice and it says, "Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.4 Ghz, 1066 FSB) with Quad Core technology and 8 MB cache, 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800 MHz.
I defragmented my hard drive before beginning and have 779 GB or 83 percent free space on hard drive.
I have not placed my video clips on the timeline yet so don't know if there is a red line on top, indicating it hasn't been rendered. I merely wanted to play back my clip to set "in" and "out" points. This has never happened before in my long history of using Premiere Elements. Would prefer not to have to go back to PE 8, as that was a disaster.

PE9 - occasional black screen instead of video clip

I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0.1 and windows XP SP3. In general, I don't have any problems with the software. However, occasionally, the video clip that I have imported in timeline become black (with sound OK). The rest of the clips are OK. Sometimes it helps to restart the program. But then sometime other clip is with black video. The thing is that when I do rendering, if a clip in the timeline was with black video it is then also rendered as a black part of the video.
Any idea how can I fix it? I updated the program. I also downloaded videorenderer.dll as was suggested on some other site without results.

From nvidia's site they don't show a 8400 ES. Do you mean 8400SE? Although "new" to you it is actually quite old (by technology standards) - a 2008 product. So the graphics drivers provided with the card will be ancient. You should get and install the most recent version (266.58WHQL) from nvidia.
While your at it check all these other basics as well:
Install all Windows Updates.
Install latest version of Apple QuickTime (v7.6.9 at time of writing). Even if you don't use QuickTime, PRE relies heavily on it.
Install most recent graphics and sound drivers from the manufacturers web sites.
Install PRE9 v9.0.1 update.
Delete BadDrivers.txt (use windows search to find it)
Run Disk Cleanup.
Run Defragmenter.
Reboot your PC.
Temporarily disable any anti-virus realtime scanning.
And give us some information about your clips and hardware:
Use the GSpot Codec Information Utility to analyse the file and post screen image.
What project preset did you use?
Where did the clip come from?
How did you get it into PRE?

How can I capture a video clip streaming on VLC?

I need to get a capture of a video that is playing in VLC. The video streams fine on my monitor but when I use Captivate to capture it all I get is a black screen. I am using Captivate 4 and using VLC 0.8.6i.
I have tried the Automatic Recoring and Full Motion Recording and neither work. Both of these work fine if I try to capture using a different video player but I need to use VLC becuase I get better quality.
Any suggestions?

Likely you will need to capture using a different tool than Captivate. Then you might save in a format Captivate understands (such as FLV or SWF) then insert that into Captivate.

I found another way too, to do it: ctrl + click the project icon and choose from the menu "Show package content" which opens the folder that looks similar to earlier iMovie folders with Media and cache folders.
