Capture - sequence - output settings FC Studio

Hi. I have been using FCS2 a number of years with no probs shooting on a Canon XL1s in frame rate and when rendering in slow mo at 50% everything fine. (Shutter speed at 50)
My results have now changed, slow mo is seriously stepping even when images are not passing through the frame quickly.
When capturing frame rate I am using the following settings
Capture - sequence and output (via Compressor) Progressive.
When adding the captured clip to the time line FCS wants me to change it to bottom 1st interlaced with no obvious improvement in outcome for slow mo work
Have tried permutations of this in each step, interestingly the best result for using a slow motion sequence seems to be to change every step - capture - sequence - output - dvd authoring - all to bottom 1st, but this does seem to lower the over-all look and result in pic quality.
Am I doing something real dumb or is my system playing up?
cheers
Philip

  • Help with 24p capture/sequence settings and interlace artifacts

We are trying to capture sd video shot on a panasonic DVX 100B at 24p (not advanced) using FCP 6.02.
The video was shot anamorphic (squeeze) through the camera.
We have tried a variety of capture and sequence setting and continue to get varying degrees of artifact (lines) at motion points (e.g. when a hand moves).
    We have tried:
    Capture Easy set-up 29.97
    Capture Anamorphic 29.97
We have tried changing field dominance to none.
We have experimented with both interlace and progressive scan.
We have experimented with different playback units including the camera shot with.
Would love some advice on best capture sequence settings. Playback will be computer/video projector.

It's sounds like you've been mislead about what 24p (as opposed to 24p Advanced) actually is on tape - it's interlaced 29.97 footage. So, what you're seeing is normal - there should be three progressive frames followed by 2 interlaced frames (since it's pulldown added to 23.98 material).
So, to get to the heart of your question, you are capturing correctly - Anamorphic 29.97.
If you want true progressive output, strip the pulldown - use Cinema Tools - and edit as 23.98. Otherwise, if you can't go 23.98, you're stuck with what you've got.

  • Film shot on 16mm, now on DVCAM - proper capture/sequence settings?

    Hey everyone,
Question on workflow for a short which is already in post. Editor put it in a 24 timeline, thinking that's a mistake. Please clarify what capture/sequence settings should be. The final output of this film will be digital (either HDCAM or DVD or both) but it will not go back out to film.
    1) Shot on super-16mm film at 24fps.
    2) Output at Fotokem to DVCAM (not sure at what, but assume 29.97, right?)
    3) Captured at 29.97.
    4) Sequence is currently at 24. But thinking this should be at 29.97.
    5) What should the final export be to online at Fotokem?
Upper left dailies timecode looks like its 24fps and lowerleft looks like its 29.97fps and they sink up.

Call fotokem tomorrow to confirm what rate they did the telecine. It will most likely either be 23.98 or 29.97. It seems that through your findings so far that it is 29.97. If that's true, yes- it should be captured at 29.97.
To edit, start a new project using the easy setup menu under the final cut pro pulldown menu. Select the DV50 NTSC settings.
    cut.
Regarding final output, you should output it as the same codec that it was brought in, in this case, export to DVCAM. Don't do minidv as it will compress your bit rate and give you less options in the final online session.

  • Help please with capture / sequence settings for DVCAM PAL 16:9

Simple question but I'm baffled by choices for capture/sequence using FCP6 to capture 16:9 PAL DVCAM. Have tried esay set up (not enough options) and also sequence and capture settings manually too many options ) and always seem to end up with borders top and bottom, not full viewer / canvas at correct aspect ratio. Can someone tell me correct settings. I'm baffled by inclusion of 5:4 aspect ratio and whether in the compression box under advanced settings in the sequence settings bow I should select 4:3 or 16:9 and in the seq. settings box itself whether I should check anamorphic 16:9.In audio/video settings (summary tab) there's also a question about playback settings which is set to '(missing) apple firewire pal 720x568'. What's that about. Any assistance much appreciated.

Don't over think it. There's no reason why you should have to modify a capture preset in your situation. Use the easy setup for DV PAL 48 KHz Anamorphic (assuming your footage is anamorphic and not letterboxed). If you're seeing gray bars at the top and bottom of the canvas, hit ctrl-U to have the windows automatically adjusted to the right size. If you're seeing black bars, then your footage is probably letterboxed. You should use the regular DV PAL easy setup to capture that. If the Video Playback device is set to (missing) it's because your deck or camera is not turned on, or isn't connected to the computer.

  • Sequence settings should match output settings

My friend has sent me a project to edit. with this sequence setting.
i tried many output settings but the quality is bad. i want to know what output settings shall i use for it.
    Thanks In Advance

Sequence setting should match source settings.
Output settings can be what ever you want them to be.

  • Sequence / Export Settings for Mixed Footage, Various Outputs

Using variety of footage from a Canon XA10, Premiere titles, After Effects Titles, stills in a variety of nested sequences.
In one of my sequences where I used the XA10 to set sequence settings it was interpreted as AVC-Intra 100 1080i. The problem I had was one Premiere title showed interlacing no matter what I tried to remove it. The only thing that worked was to change the sequence settings to AVC-Intra 100 1080p. When I exported it the interlacing was gone.
Other sequences from Digital Juice footage have native settings of ARRI Cinema Field: No Field Progressive. Eventually all these sequences will be lined up on a master timeline.
So my question is for individual and the master timeline sequence what settings should I use, or should I not care about it and let exporting settings take care of it? This project will be rendered to:
    1. DVD with menu (Recommended export settings?)
    2. Windows Media Computer file (Recommended export settings?)
I've read many threads that say wait till export, but my H264 exports of the AVC-Intra 100 1080i footage and Premiere titling had interlacing in Windows Media playback.
    Thanks.

Thanks Kevin. I had seen Photoshop pop up a lot during my researching the problem, but was unsure if that was the best way to go for my specific problem. Tried it out, and I'm headed down the right road now, just have to tweak output settings. Thanks!

  • Help choosing capture, sequence and export settings?

Hello, Im new to Final Cut. Im using final cut pro 6.0.2 and trying to teach my self the basics of this program. I Shoot with a Canon GL2 in the 16:9 setting and I'm not sure what the optimal settings are for the sequence, capture and export settings. Someone recommended the DV NTSC anamorphic for capture and sequence settings which seems to work fine except when I export to QT movie it appears to be displaying in 4:3 instead of how it previews which is 16:9. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi CJ,
    Welcome to the discussion agora,
...the DV NTSC anamorphic for capture and sequence settings which seems to work fine except when I export to QT movie it appears to be displaying in 4:3 instead of how it previews which is 16:9.
That's normal. Are you watching it in QT? QT displays square pixels while your movie has rectangular ones.
Go to QT main menu>Window>show movie properties>presentation check box and change *conform aperture*.

  • Light .mov file (output settings)

    Hi all,
I made a HD-promo for in my youth church with FCE. We are using Easy Worship (EW) on a Windows Vista to project everything. I installed the K-Light Codec pack for EW, so we can play .MOV (with ACC sound).
I have to be sure that the file will play. I can test the files, but want to be sure so I'm asking for some help.
The PC we are using is 3 years old, so not that fast anymore, so I think it's important to have a light file..
Which output-settings do you recommend for making a .Mov (with ACC sound).

Since you haven't specified the capabilities of your PCs, the only way to find out if they are 'slow' would be to experiment with one or more different video files/codecs until you have results you find satisfactory.
I suggested H.264 because it yields smaller files that retain significant visual quality. Whether or not it is the best codec for your situation remains to be seen.
An alternative would be to get Flip4Mac Studio or higher to export your video to WMV for use on your PCs.

  • Problem saving Output Settings in AV Lab

I have a 'document' that starts up automatically when I boot my MBA.  The file name it opens is "Audio Dynamics Processor.trak".
I am using this to compress audio output so that the sound volume is less dynamic.
The problem is that there is no sound when I start up. To hear the sound, I have to open the "Studio" tab, and change the Output Settings from Soundflower (2ch) to Built-in Output.  I save the document again under the same name (and I've verifed that the new version is getting save), but for some reason when it next starts up the Output Settings are once again set to Soundflower.
Any help as to how to make this change persist would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

  • Video output settings/codec for playability on iPod

Hello. I have scanned all the relevant threads on this, and just seem to be having a difficult time getting my video podcast to play/be accepted on an iPod.
I have QT Pro, Final Cut Studio, MPEG Streamclip, Visual Hub... and have tried various output settings (although I have not been able to replicate an output setting displaying the "baseline" option). Nothing works and I have tried 14 or so attempts.
My only test iPod is the latest video iPod... Are there older compatability issues? Just trying to get this done and it is quite frustrating!!! Any advice would be appreciated...
    Alex

Hmmm, I'm concerned that the "Export Movie to iPod" setting didn't work for you. It should have. By the way, there is no need to export out of FCP as 640x480 (unless you're timeline is natively that size). When you export out of QuickTime, it will resize your final movie to 320x240 anyway.
Personally, I don't use QuickTime Pro for my encoding. It's always worked for me, but doesn't give me enough control. The export to iPod option takes a really long time and the quality is fixed as really high (meaning larger than necessary...)
I use ffmpegX. You can create your own preset baseed on the "iPod h.264" option. Just resize it and choose your preferred options. I reduce the quality (video bitrate) to 500kbps and choose 2-pass encoding. It gives you great image quality at a managable file size for download.
It can seem a little bit geeky, but once you save your preset you never need to delve into its guts again.

  • Playback Output settings don't work

Playback Output settings are not working properly with one particular user account on a shared Mac. FCP is not routing video and audio to the external monitor and speakers even though the correct playback settings are set in the A/V Devices tab of Audio/Video Settings. FCP routes video only to the Mac's screen and audio to the Mac's internal speaker.
With all other user accounts on the same Mac, with the same settings in the Audio/Video Settings, the playback works fine.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Try all this:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • TIF ImageSequence Output Settings (RAW)

    Hi,
I have a series of 16-bit TIFs that have been processed in Lightroom, for a short film, to be imported into FCPX.  I was wondering what output settings would work best in Compressor to maintain the best possible quality for the sequence.
I will read up in the meantime, but if anyone has any experience doing this (or suggestions), please let me know.
    Thanks!

One more question, which may sound stupid, but when I get the Pro Res .MOV after my Image Sequence it is about 500mb.  Previously, I was dragging all the TIFs from Lightroom into FCPX, which was about 12gb.  Will I be losing quality by compressing with the image sequence, then editing in FCPX, then compressing again for Vimeo?  In my head, the more steps of compressing, the more image quality loss.
I would just continue to drag the TIFs into FCPX, but this doesn't seem functional in the long run because of the lag time
(30 Minutes Later)  Pro Res Image Sequence from Compressor very blurry in FCPX.

    Hi Abhay,
If you go to Transaction code SE93, enter the tcode "CK86_99" and click display, you may see the default value for transaction is "KKBB" and the screen field for P_SCREEN = 0300, P_TCODE = ck86_99.
You may need to copy the transaction code "KKBB" and go to SE93 again, enter the tcode for "KKBB" then click display, now you may see the program name is "RKKB1000".
          Hope this answer your question.

  • Sound Control Panel doesn't retain output settings.

Since updating to 10.6.2, I've discovered that, after starting up or a reboot, the output settings revert to "Internal Speakers/Built-in Output." This is a pain, since I rely on a external speaker system (and so use the "Line Out/Built-in Line Output" setting).
I have tried resetting PRAM and re-installing 10.6.2 using the Combo updater, all to no avail.
Has anyone experienced this and/or solved it?
    Many thanks in advance.

delete all files in /Library/preferences/audio (that's the Library at the top level of the hard drive) and restart. sound settings should retain on restarts after that.

  • Is there a fix for Mountain Lion audio output settings after the laptop goes to sleep and wakes back up?

Mac Book Pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 after the notebook sleeps audio and video does work (for example on YouTube).  I have been able to temporarily work around this by toggling the settings on Built-in Output in Audio Midi Setup, Audio window between 2ch-20bit Integer and 2ch-24bit Integer.  But this is a temporary fix until the laptop sleeps again.
When it's not working, all system sounds (emails "dings", delete file "swish", etc.) are silenced, and video playbacks on YouTube and elsewhere freeze and have no audio until the Audio Output settings are toggled then they all immediately start working.
Has anyone encountered the same?  Have a long term fix for this annoyance?
