Capture sometimes saves file as AV sometimes as MOV
I have a G4, FCE 3.5, OSX 4.10.11 and and external HD. After capturing several hours of Sony Digital 8 tapes successfully in MOV format, it started to randomly capturing in AV format. I can't see a pattern to when I will get which format. All I know is FCE will not recognize the AV format. How can I stop FCE from capturing in AV format and capture only in MOV format?

About the same time, my capture window changed to full screen during capture and I haven't figured how to return it back to the smaller size. Could this be responsible?

Cant download or save file sometimes
When i try to download a file or save it, it starts to download normally till it finished and this pops up "www.xxxx.com could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.
Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location."
It always happen. I tried saving it into different places like on my desktop and in other drives but the same thing pops up. I really have no idea and this is interfering with work so please please i really need help.

Firefox immediately starts downloading the file to the temp folder and move the file after you have supplied the name and location to that folder.
It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
You can try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
Do not forget to re-enable the scanning in your anti-virus software after you are finished with downloading and installing.

I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files. For some reason, just this past week, Image Capture will no longer save the file. It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.
The file name has no special character in it, just letters and no spaces.
I have done this in the past and it has worked, but now it will not.
I have not upgraded any software, that I am aware of.
After scanning, the Image Capture pops up the Scan Results with the file name in the window, but neither the Scan Results nor the Image Capture window responds to inputs. The Image Capture window is frozen, with only the "Overview" and "Cancel" buttons active (but non-responsive).
Is this a software issue or a scanner hardware issue? I am using a HP Photosmart C6200 series printer/scanner on a network using a Time Capsule airport.

Got a 90% fix. Apparently the Mavericks preferences won't work with Yosemite, so I just deleted the Image Capture preferences.
Unfortunately, the "Scan to" folder seems to be permanently set to the Pictures folder.
1. Quit Image Capture
2. Go to Finder > Go > Home, which opens up your home folder (named after your user name)
3. Open Library > Preferences > com.apple.ImageCapture.plist - Drag this file to the Trash
4. Start "Image Capture", click "Details" and change all your settings as you prefer
5. Quit and restart "Image Capture". Notice it remembers all your settings except "Scan to" folder. It insists on saving to "Pictures".
That's as far as I was successful. I tried changing the "Scan to" folder to "Desktop", but on launch, Image Capture always sets it back to "Pictures".
This is what I tried:
6. Download and install "Pref Setter" from http://www.nightproductions.net/prefsetter.html
7. Quit "Image Capture". Right-click on "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist" and open with Pref Setter.
8. Search for "Pictures", which finds "~/Pictures" (the tilde character at the start means your home directory).
9. Double-click on "~/Pictures" and change it to the folder you prefer. I like "~/Desktop"
10. Choose File > Save then Quit from Pref Setter. Note that re-opening the plist file still shows "~/Desktop"
11. Start up "Image Capture" -- on startup, "Image Capture" sets "Scan to" folder to "Pictures"
I consider this a bug. -

"Always ask me where to save files" does not work.
Summary: The "Always ask me where to save files" feature does not work. No dialog box comes up, apparently because the browser is stuck on a bad old read-only lastDir location, in a prefs.js file that I can't edit.
Details:
I am using Firefox 30.0 on Mac OS 10.6.8. My Mac has a both a read/write Mac partition that I use most of the time, and a bootcamp Windows partition drive ("C"), which I can read but not write to.
At some point I accidentally tried to download a file from a site, using Firefox, to the read-only Windows C drive. Ever since that time, I have not been able to download any files from Firefox, except to the firefox/downloads folder. This is inconvenient. If, in preferences, I try to set downloads to ""Always ask me where to save files", the dialog box does not come up when I actually try to save files. This problem does not apply to saving photos by right-clicking them.
If I open, in text-edit, mozilla/firefox/profiles/t4vockvue.default/prefs.js, which was saved yesterday, I can see a problematic line. It reads:
user_pref("browser.download.lastDir", "C:\\Documents and Settings\\[etcetc]");
C:\\Documents and Settings\\[etcetc] being the read-only windows directory.
This prefs.js is apparently not an editable file.
I tried to fix this by opening a browser tab in Firefox and opening about:config. The editable browser.download.lastDir does NOT show the same "lastDir"....it shows some directory that I successfully downloaded photos to, by right-clicking on a photo.
How can I fix this problem?

Sometimes the file that stores the customizations becomes corrupted and fails to update properly at the end of your session. You can rename the file and customize from scratch.

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button (Windows: "Show Folder" button).
Hopefully you are using a separate profile folder on each OS. -
My TM is often giving me the "You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file “.002332b7be8a” in folder “Time Machine Backups”" message when I go to select my backup drive. I've reviewed past archived discussions on this and, like many other people, gotten completely flummoxed trying to find a permanent solution. Tried the suggested fixes via Terminal and it didn't help because I couldn't get through the entire process without Terminal telling me it couldn't find a file or drive. When I can find the time, I'm going to try Tinker Tool to reveal where that numbered file actually is and give it another go.
In the meantime, for those who are desperate to get their TM working again to get at least one backup done, I can offer people a temporary solution that's worked for me.
I've found that restarting my iMac somehow resets TM and usually allows it to do at least one of its automatic backups, sometimes several, before it reverts back to failing and producing that same darn warning message. I only want a backup done once a day, so it's not that inconvenient to go this route.
There's another even quicker method (perhaps a little more risky but hasn't been a problem for me yet) that I've been using more recently, and that is to simply unplug the external while the iMac is on (I close system preferences first though, and make sure TM isn't actually doing anything at the time) then plugging it back in and choosing the backup drive again in the TM system preferences window once that drive has shown up again in the Mac's list of devices. I don't get that warning message when I do this. It works every time for me and so far it hasn't lost or corrupted any data on the external, despite the warning message you get on Macs when you unplug a USB device without ejecting it first. However, do this at your own risk--don't flame me if it backfires on you. If you're of the opinion that it's not wise to unplug the device this way, then fine, go ahead and state such in this thread, but be polite about it.
Hope this helps anyone who's frantic to make a backup without having to start from square one with a whole new complete initial backup (can take many hours to make one) on a fresh external drive.
By the way, I've read somewhere that this problem was fixed with Snow Leopard. Whether that's true is another matter. I'm not quite ready to update to 10.6 for other reasons, even though I bought it, and I figure some other people are also still using 10.5.8 out of fear and loathing around the unknowns of installing a new OS too, so that's why I thought I'd post this message (couldn't find a discussion around this that was still active and not archived).noodlenose wrote:

Cannot print anything from internet using Firefox as browser. Please advise. I have to use Firefox for internet college courses, cannot print my assignments. I do not have this problem on Mac or using Internet Explorer. Only happens when using Firefox. When I select print a message comes up to save information to desktop as .xps file. Select save, sometimes it is on the desktop but I cannot open the file or it simply does not save file and get an error message that print command failed. What is happening?

Cannot save file in word for mac 2011
When I tried to save a word file, the system keep telling me "this file is being used by another program, please save again" then the file name turned into something like "Word Work File L_230232796.tmp" and I have to choose another name for the file. Besides, sometimes the new file cannot be opened correctly. How can I solve it?
perhaps ignore a little the standard search microsoft forum response above for the moment, the problem may lie with apple, as I doubt these problems occurred with snow leopard and previous, as its the new OSX file versioning autosaving features that seemed to have cause allot of issues not just with office, my clients cant stand the lack of "save as" for instance, this new autosave features also has a hidden ability to lock files older than a certain age hidden within time machine preferences this might and I say "might" be the issue in question although "blocked" is more unusual in contrast to to the more common "locked" as an error, follow the following points in order >
1: just check this article to see whether it may help with your issue.

7: Note also lion and mountain lion have changed and tightened quite a bit the permissions and user control over OSX and file locations etc, for the endless over perceived security risks out there, meaning for instance lion will no longer let you save files to root without putting in your password etc, so Might I suggest also making sure that where your saving your word documents is within the user folder temporarily ? and see whether that resolves the issue. ie the file saving location in question maybe the issue.
8: Sadly if you recently did an "upgrade to Lion", some Software issues may also resolved by reinstalling the said software afterwards, negating the point of an upgrade install, but anyway … as that can sometimes resolve issues with software from a Lion Upgrade.
further : if this is related to a temporary file save location within the application package as some software makers seem to do ? then permissions repair may have resolved it or it may require a microsoft update to the office suite if so, I thought doc temp files as regards microsoft documents were saved alongside the original file ? could be a temp elsewhere though perhaps in the Microsoft folder in the user>library>application support maybe the issue stems from permissions there ? a search can reveal how to repair the permissions on the user folder which cannot be done through disk utility as standard, though i doubt this will resolve it. OS X lion and up and the new autosave feature, versioning and file locking time machine backups and the lack of "save as in some application have created allot of issues for allot of people you are not alone in these issues. -
I'm stumped. We are running a novell server where we save all of our shared files. On both my boss's iMac and my mac mini, I am unable to open previously created keynote documents. The document that I need to open was created in November 10. I can see the doc, can view the properties, but when I click on it to open it, Keynote opens...and then nothing. Sometimes I get no error message. Other times I get the unexpected error please close and reopen keynote message. I can't save files either. I tried to create a file and save it to the shared location on our server and I get the message that the file couldn't be saved. However, when I browse through the finder, i can see a folder was created for the document and there is a document in the folder. Any ideas? I've tried reinstalling iWork already.
My DP 2.7 G5 and MBP upgraded without any hassles. My brand new DP 3.0 Intel tower with Leopard already installed was a headache. I did a migration from my old 1.8 G5. Acrobat Pro worked but PS CS3 was shot dead. I tried an uninstall and reinstall but no joy. 'Got on the phone with Adobe and did a complicated removal of everything Adobe - not an easy task as parts are everywhere.
I reinstalled PS and it is fine now, what a pain. They say that others are having the same issues. Monday when I get back to the office I will have to put Acrobat back in.
It is just one of those things. All other programs were no problem, even Quark worked without problems.

Is anyone else finding it very slow to save files in Flash CS5? I've gotten in the habit of saving often, probably from dealing with CS4 being so unstable. It's now habit that I hold down command and hit S then Return every time I test a movie. Yet with CS5, saving a file is no longer immediate. I'm on an 8-core Mac Pro with 12GB RAM, working with a 60MB FLA, and it takes at least 7 seconds to save the file, complete with progress bar. This may not sound like a lot, but if I -- make a change / save the file / test the movie -- and repeat that over and over again, those seconds add up. It's odd because CS4 saved files so fast it didn't need a progress bar and I never noticed a delay.
I suppose one solution is to get over my CS4 fears and not save as often, but I don't quite have that level of confidence yet!

I would say that there might be some case where saving a file in CS5 could take a bit longer, but it really depends what you have inside your file. This is especially true if you import lots of assets inside your document. With the introduction of XFL, we are now importing the asset but also saving a copy of that asset inside the document structure. Having that extra copy could take a bit longer to save, but you have now the ability to share the document along with all the assets, and those assets can be edited very easily.
Note that usually the first save is going to be a little slower, but subsequent saves should be much faster. The first time we need to create the XFL document structure, but on subsequent we try to only save what has changed. Of course sometimes we'll need to resave the entire document depending on what changed.
Also saving as Uncompressed should not make much of a difference at all.
Finally I would say that a 60 meg Fla file is fairly large. I mean if you have 60 megs of drawing that one thing, but 60 megs worth of assets you might want to consider linking them instead. Since you probably want to publish a small swf.

I have the same issue. When I save a file in a different format "as copy" and then try to save the original document I get all kinds of weirdness. Many times I have lost the layers of my .psd file because the Creative Cloud somehow gets confused and flattens the layers in my psd file just like the JPG or PDF that I saved it "Save As". When I go back to the PSD file later all of the layers are flattened. I know it is not user error because I get that weird "write access not granted" or sometimes "file path is not valid" and that makes me nervous so I save and double-save my work as PSD with the layers intact. Nonetheless they are later found to be gone.

since upgrading to Lion, i am unable to take screen shots. i get the message that i don't have permission to save files to the place where SSs are saved. how can i regain the ability to save screen shots? thanks
First of all, are you using the OS native screen capture?
If not, make sure the application you're using has been update for Lion. I was using Snapz Pro for years, but I need to update it for use with Lion. Meanwhile Grab and the keyboard shortcuts are working on my Lion load.
If you are using the native capture mode unsuccessfully, I would run the Disk Utility and repair permissions on the drive. For some reason, even in past OS Versions, routine maintenance of permissions makes life a lot easier.
