Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

  • HIGH-END video from Sony  FX1 (HDV)

I have a Sony FX1 that I would like to use for live webcasts.
    Any ideas?

I actually found out that it only works if there is no other
webcam present. That's an odd quirk, but easy to work around...
    Thanks for responding, Brent

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Compatability of Sony camcorder HDV SR5 with FCP X

I have looked at the list of camcorders which will work with Final Cut Pro X and, although the Sony HDV SR10 is there, the SR5 isn't. Does that mean I would waste my money if I downloaded FCP X?
I have Mountain Lion Version 10.8.5 with 3.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory.
At the moment I am using Final Cut Express 4, which is fine. However, I'm tempted by the enhanced facilities with FCP X.

The list of cameras is meaningless as it is grossly out of date and only includes a handful of the thousands of available camcorders.
All DV and HDV tape cameras together with SDHC cameras will work with FCP X.
In any case you can download a free 30 day trial from
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial/
Note that you may need to update your operating system as I believe the latest version of FCP X needs Mavericks or Yosemite.

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

I'm trying to capture HDV footage shot on the Canon XHA1 and my FCP unexpectedly quits every time. I've used this type of footage and camera before with no issues.
I've trashed the preferences, tried setting the scratch disk to an external drive and on the hard drive.
I'm not sure what to try next?
    Do i have to re-install?
    anything would help!

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • I am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize

i am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize. I am not able to capture the content in DV mode. i am using a Firewire 800 to 400 converter and a 6 pin firewire cable to connect to the SonyHDV VTR. Please suggest me how do i do this.

The 800-400 converter plugs have proved a problem for this. What version of the software are you using. It sounds like an older version of FCP, if so you should ask your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Capturing DV from HDV FX1

    I have a sony FX1
I would like to capture DV from the HDV footage in the camera.
I have tried but failed, it even says HDV-DV but gives me an error saying it cannot be done.
    ThanX
    Vic

Vic, I have the same as one of my cameras. @ things to look for - have you selected DV output from the camera, the light next to the fire wire should be illuminated next to the firewire output , on the camera, and then ignore anything wto do with HD in FCP and rather just have easy set up for DV, whether you are NTSC or PAL.
I think where you are confused is that you are trying to iomport DV into FCP when you have set it for HD. IF you want to sck in HD then have the cmera set to HD and set the FCP to HDV too. Pls let me know if that helps

  • SONY FX1 and the FCP

anyone using the sony FX1 and FCP5? im trying to get the best import settings. also, do i just export it as MPEG2 if im making a DVD for mass production?

    hello ZJS,
i think i'll have to correct you here - iMovie doesn't do any encoding. Encoding is done by apps like QT or compressor (or iDVD, for that matter) and outputs a file with a different codec.
as i mentioned before, iMovie handles HDV differently than FCP because it uses the QT intermediate codec, so i think this is where your black bar comes from - anybody correct me please if i'm getting this wrong. i still recommend doing the following procedure:
    1. capture from camera to FCP and edit
    2. print to video from FCP to camera
    3. capture from camera to iMovie
    4. create DVD in iDVD and save as disc image
    5. burn with toast
you said before that you filmed in HDV and that's what you wanted to get out of it, please note that by making a DVD you will get Mpeg2 video which isn't really the same thing anymore. I have read a couple of threads reporting that image quality is not really good on DVD's with HDV material made with iDVD, but can't really comment on it as i never tried
    all right, keep us posted

    Hi Perro,
Try telling us all exactly what methods you are performing that is causing you the inability to capture. System specs, capture settings, logging methods, deck connection, etc. Tell us what you are doing and someone might be able to tell what you're doing wrong. This isn't 20 questions here...
Also try a Google search for FCP capture Sony Z1 there's a lot of information out there.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

And it's easy enough to change to square pixels within the editing application.
