Capture/time code errors

Hello all -
Every now and then while capturing video I come across this issue of capturing stopping and getting the error message "Final Cut Pro has detected a time code error...etc"
What's puzzling is that it is from a tape that was a solid hour of video (rather than starting and stopping of recording) I assume I just ran into a bad tape.
I don't see any digital break up - or crease in the tape or anything like that - just a slight hitch in the audio -- then the stopping of capturing.
MY QUESTION - are there any settings that I could change for this capture that would "allow" the capturing? (lowering the threshold of what FCP will capture)?
or should I dub the tape to a new tape and (hopefully) get clean time code on the new tape?

This can happen for a number of reasons:
1. Dirty heads on the recording and/or playback device.
2. Mis-matching heads between the recording and playback devices
3. Wrong firewire control protocol.
4. Using the system hard drive as the capture scratch drive
5. A faulty firewire cable or the cable is loose at either the computer or camera connection
6. A faulty firewire port
7. A software glitch
There probably are others as well.

Capturing Time Code from Beta SP

Hello,
I am beginning a large project which was filmed in Beta SP. Though I've worked with Beta SP in the past, I've never had to capture time code, so it's never been an issue. I've simply routed the Beta deck's (Sony BetacamSP UVW-1800)video and audio signals through my DV deck (JVC BR-DV600U), which then firewires the video into my edit system. Pretty simple, pretty efficient, but as you know, no time code.
With this new project, I need to record time code, and am unsure as to what the best methods are. Any suggestions?

I'm hoping you may clarify this for me, however (from Shane's link):

so far so good...

plug the Max serial RS422 to my DV deck, or to my Beta deck?

I'm not sure what this means.

Capture Time code with Canon VIXIA HG21

I have been very successful capturing with the Canon HG21, even with its AVCHD format. 24p 30p 60i, its all worked great for me.
But....
When it comes to just getting time code from the camera, to final cut, I get Media Start - zero and Media End - the length of the clip. Anyone got any ideas? This is a 120 gig camera so I am scared to shoot a lot and find out I have to go through every clip to find a shot.

If you use Windows Explorer (are you Windows or Mac?) are you able to "see" the files on the SD card?
If yes, copy the entire folder to your 2nd, video file hard drive, and then import into PreEl from there

Capture/time code drop... oops i didn't mean to

After capturing clip warning came up about break in time code. "You must relog and recapture them without breaks."
Question? Clips are already captured and play fine. Will the drop in TC cause a techenical problem in my program or a problem later during output by using the clips? Going to DVD Studio.

Yes - to be on the safe side you should - and make sure you select "make new clip" in the 'on timecode break' setting in general User Preferences. You may be lucky with what you have captured but you may also find that it creates problems later on - especially if you need to batch digitise parts of your project again at a higher res or for another reason.

Fixing Time-code in MPEG Streamclip

Hi,
I was converting some video from a DVD recorded on a Sony DVD Recorder on a church video system to DV for later editing along with video from two camcorders (not the best configuration, obviously). Immediately upon opening in MPEG Streamclip, there was a message about ability to fix time-code errors, and I allowed that to be done before conversion, and apparently a great number were found to be fixed. What is it fixing, as in what generated time-code breaks on a continuous recording -- is the fact that the camera on this system is not generating time-codes (pretty sure it isn't) or just the nature of such a process?

Thank you Michel!! I went to the website you posted and it said the problem was with the file QuicktimeMPEG.component found in System/Library/QuickTime. I went in Time Machine to a backup before the 10.6.3 update, recovered the QuickTimeMPEG.component file, and placed it back in the QuickTime folder to overwrite the new file. Worked perfectly and sound is playing again!
This hasn't been the only issue with Snow Leopard and the QuickTimeMPEG.component. I remember when I first upgraded the file disappeared altogether and I had to go back in Time Machine to retrieve the file.

A frame with time code could not be found error

Hey all
So I just started using Speedgrade with my Premiere CS6 timeline exported as EDL, all RED (R3D) footage. When I input the EDL it only loads about 50% of the clips and pops up a red box like this:
So after a bit of Googling, the only solution I found was to ensure the time code base match, which I changed from 24fps to 23.976 which is exactly what is in my Premiere sequence. I then had to find the clips and drag them onto the gray box where it says "Reel not loaded". No big deal, took me all of 5 minutes.
I had also thought the above error was due to me having some high FPS clips in my timeline (120fps to be exact). However, even with no clips in the reels panel showing "Reel not loaded" when I stop at a couple of clips on the timeline I get this:
And as you can see in the reels panel the clip it is referring to has indeed timecode in that range.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I'm pretty sure it's related to the whole time base thing and it's dropping frames, but can't see how this can be true now that I've changed all instances of 24fps in the settings to 23.976 and that's what the Premiere sequence is showing, and also what is in the RED files.

Facing many of the same problems over the last four days. It's been a total nightmare. Working on Speedgrade CC with .R3D files and conformed the timeline to match the 23.976 footage, yet I'm still seeing clips get rejected, along with dropped frames which both carry over to output files and seem to cause the program to crash.
Would love an explanation.

Recording an external SMPTE Time code during capture

I have several diffrent devices that I am trying to Sync using a common Smpte Code Generator. How do I record that external SMPTE Source while capturing in Final Cut Pro HD? I am currenly using a AJA Konal LS card for my capture device?

You can't with Final Cut Pro unless you capture with a tape machine as has already been stated.
If you have no tape machine you need a provision to insert the timecode into the rs422 datastream, like the [Horita TCI-50|http://www.horita.com/smpteltc.htm#RLT-50] or an [Adrienne|http://www.adrielec.com/box20lit.htm] interface. You may also want to investigate RP-188 timecode which SMPTE says "Transmission of Time Code and Control Code in the Ancillary Data Space of a Digital Television Data Stream." You probably can use [Aja's VTR Exchange|http://www.aja.com/support/kona/kona-lse-ls.php] software which will capture embedded RP-188 timecode if the video you are using does contain RP-188.

Final Cut Pro 5 doesn't capture when there's a break in time code

Hi,
I'm trying to capture a mini DV tape using "Capture Now". When it encounters a break in time code, FCP stops the deck and the capture -- which is what I want it to do -- but I don't get a media file in my Browser window or in the Capture Scratch folder of the footage that should have been captured up until the break. What could the problem be & what is my fix-it?

Check the settings in User Preferences (General tab). The "On timecode break:" popup menu should be set to "Make New Clip" or "Warn After Capture". If its set to "Abort Capture" nothing will be saved.

If it keeps happening, tell us your OS. (Most likely Mountain Lion.. which has networking ability of wet string and a pair of tin cans).

It can also be the backup is corrupt and needs repair.
Are you aware of the supplement to 10.7.5 to fix TM??

Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks?

Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks? Or does it start capturing with time code from the tape and then just keeps rolling regardless of TC breaks on the tape, thus not matching code after the first TC break? I don't see any preferences where you can ask it to regenerate the code it is writing based on the code it's receiving from the tape (i.e. continuous jam). I'm guessing it just keeps on going with the code it started with. Anyone know different?

It is not clear from your post what you want FCP to do when it encounters the timecode break on the tape that it is ingesting.
You have three choices:
If you choose "Make New Clip" then FCP will stop, roll the tape forward to legitimate code, and then attempt a pre-roll and start capturing again. The new clip will have timecode that corresponds to the timecode on the tape.
If you choose "Warn After Capture", FCP will keep ingesting and the timecode will continue contiguously from the source code of your starting clip, meaning it won't match the tape after the point of the break.

"Waiting for time code" while Capture Now

My Sony DSC-TRV 460 (Hi 8 digital, not HD) camcorder (digital video output activated because the tape is an older, analog) is attached w/firewire. Click File > Capture. The capture window appears and its controls do control the camcorder and I can watch the tape w/audio there. According the Help, I set the tape a bit before I want to start, click Play (or spacebar), click Capture Now. This launches a big black window that says Final Cut Express w/Apple logo. At the bottom it says "hit escape to exit," "device must be in VTR mode" and "Waiting for time code." The same camcorder with the same settings brings video into iMovie HD with no problem so I could workaround that way. How to get FCE to do what I want, though?

I've accomplished the task several times with my Sony Digital-8 camera. Since the tape is analog there's no timecode (which iMovie doesn't look for) and you must use the DV Converter setting in easy setup. I think you're right about the on-screen transport controls: you won't have them. (FCE thinks it's just listening to a converter box -- same as if you connected a VCR to the D8's analog ports, assuming the 460 offers that feature.) Try a reboot to clear things out. Turn on the camera then start FCE and check the Easy Setup settings. Use Capture Now and press the 'play' button on the camcorder.

How can I capture when it ask "time code"?

I was trying to capture a video from a dvd player and FCP didn't recognized it as a source. Then, I used a Bluflame, video/converter/interfase(DV signal), between the FCP system and the dvd player. The video signal entered perfectly into the capture screen, but I couldn't capture it in "Clip" nor "Now" options, because the system ask for the "time code". Is there a way I can capture without this rule?. Thanks to all.

Time code zeros out with batch capture

I've captured DVCam footage that had been logged for 10 min increments. FCP captured all footage successfully from start of tape to end in 10 min clips, but the time code for each clip starts at zero. So I have 4 or 5 clips that all have the same time code, but are different content. Any ideas why this may have happened. Oh and it happened through several tapes before we noticed it. Strangely, the last clip on each tape captured with the correct time code...

I've seen this happen before. The only fix I've seen is to recapture the footage.
