Capture to System Hard Drive

Hi all,
I've not visited this topic for many years so I thought I'd check back and get the general consensus at this time. Is it still not recommended to capture to the same hard drive that the system is run on?
Jared

Nothing has changed in that respect.

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • How do I overcome error 150:30 with a replacement system hard drive on a Mac Pro?

I have replaced my system hard disk drive on a Mac Pro and used Mac 'Restore' to restore the complete system from a Time Machine backup. Everything else works correctly, except my current Adobe products (InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4) both give a licensing error code 150:30 and each suggest contacting Adobe technical support.
    Can you help?
    Blair Cramond

Thanks for your reply. Is it necessary to uninstal the existing CS4
    products before re-installing?

what are the Processor, Operating system, hard drive device, Total Memory, Network card, System Graphics of the Silver ipad air?

"Memory" in this case means RAM, the working space for the processor in the iPad. It is different from storage space, the latter being what is referred to by the "32GB", "64GB" etc. specification.

  • How to transfer entire system hard drive to another on the same computer

    Hi you bunch of geniuseseses.
My system hard drive is starting to crash. I cannot use Migration Assistant to
copy it onto another drive on this machine. How do I transfer everything onto another internal hard drive? Just copying will lose some secret stuff, I'm sure.
    Thanks

Hi senules, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • Capturing to External Hard Drive

I am editing my video on a MacBook Pro with a 120GB hard drive which is not anywhere near big enough. However I have an external hard drive that is 500GB that I am trying to capture the video to. I set it up in the Final Cut system preferences but when I go to capture now it says allocating disk space and then freezes. I think the problem is that I am connecting to the drive via USB as opposed to firewire. But if Im importing video at the same time through the only firewire port how do I avoid this? Thanks.

Re: External HD ports: eject the drive, power off, switch the cable to the adjacent port, power up the drive then see if the computer recognises the drive. If it does both ports work. If it doesn't...
If ports are okay (it seems cables are fine as both camera and drive are currently recognised via firewire aren't they?). Shutdown laptop. power everything off and then power all back on and then startup. Make sure camera is in right mode and startup FCE.
If that doesn't work just out of curiosity you could open up iMovie and see if your camera is recognised through the HD there.
You could try connecting the camera directly via firewire to the computer and reminding us that it works that way (you were using USB earlier were you not?)
    Keep us posted.
    (ps I'm off to bed!)

  • Hi,i need to upgrade my 13"late 2011macbook pro with an ssd drive.i have noticed there is a system hard drive for booting up and a data storage hard drive that my computer uses, are these the same hard drive i can see inside my laptop?

hi,i use logic pro 9 and cubase to record, produce and master audio recordings and have bought a mac as recommended.have upgraded to 8gig memory (which i was told was the maximum you could upgrade a macbook pro)and still my recordin is slightley behind plauback.i need to replace my hard drive with a solid state drive to solve the problem.i have seen on youtube how to replace the hard drive but have noticed on the disk partition information that there is a 500gig harddrive for the system(booting up ect)and a 500gig harddrive for data storage, are these the same unit?i need to be sure im upgrading what the system uses to an ssd as well as the data storage or the problem wont be solved.i have an external hard drive so i have been looking at a smaller, faster ssd. hope you can help!

I would recommend not settling for less then USB 3 or hold out for Thunderbolt, if your machine is capable. Firewire 800 minimum.

  • Logging and capturing from a hard drive camera

I recently bought a jvc hard drive camera. It saves the video to 2 files a .mod file and a .moi file and when I try to use these in FCP it does not recognize these file types. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi:
Has your camera a firewire port? To use Log and Capture you must use such port. What model is it?

  • Installing Programs to an external/non-system hard drive (Raid 0)

    Hello,
Here's the setup... a little different but should be simillar to MacPro setups. I have a Macbook with a 120gb stock drive and a 160gb 'optibay' hard drive installed where the superdrive was. It is all setup and running. I would like to Raid 0 the pair. That would give me a 37GB boot volume and a 220GB raid 0 internal volume.
I cannot get LogicPro 7 or FCS to install on the second volume. The error is:
"This software must be installed on the running system"
Is there a way around this? Is it possible to install OS X on a raid 0 volume such that I would have a 220gb boot volume and a 37GB 'extra' portion?
    Thank you

What idea beyond just installing it where it goes? The installer is set to not allow it. You might try installing it, moving it, and putting an alias where the original is supposed to be.

  • Capture directly to Hard Drive?

"Log and Capture" would seem to allow me to capture directly from my HDV cameras using the "Capture [Now]" button. However this only works if there is a tape in the camera (else the capture only lasts for a fraction of a second).
Is it possible to capture from an HDV camera directly onto a Mac's hard drive, thus not having capture durations limited by the length of a video tape?

hbars, thanks for pointing out internal drive too slow and may drop frames. that is good to know.
i've previously captured direct to HD on a Dell laptop with a typical 7200 RPM internal drive. it may be my HDV does not have a particularly fast bitrate... it is still about 13 MB/sec of MPEG-2 (is only 720p).
since picking up a MacBook I'd like to try the exact same thing on the Mac. Sync may certainly be an issue, but I'm trying this because some live performances last longer than 60 (or 90) minutes. to switch tapes i lose coverage from this angle.
so I've found with a PC this approach seems to work, no lost frames, no sync issue. and I expect FCP can do it too, I just haven't found to proper settings. even if it drops frames and is out of sync, I would be very curious to see how many frames drop and how far out of sync things get.
if someone could verify that yes, they themselves have captured HDV from a camera direct to their Mac without using any tape then at least I'd know I'm not chasing the impossible.

  • 10.4.10 System Hard Drive Icon Disappeared

Can't find my system partition in the finder. All other mounted hard drives and partitions show up in my "Computer" sidebar except the one with the system on it. If i set the finder to show all drives on the desktop, the drive with my system on it doesn't show up either. I can find the system in spotlight and get to it from there and I checked disk utility and it shows up there. Tried reboot, log off then on, permissions repair but none seem to work. Did a verify disk too and disk utiltiy says it's OK. Everything seems to be working normally, I just can't get an icon for the drive that my system is on.

Sounds like the Invisiblilty bug strikes again. See the article I wrote on the problem:

The Applescript should fix it up.

  • Dropping frames capturing to external hard drive

When I attempt to capture video from my Powerbook G4 using my Lacie External drive as my Scratch Disk, I get the 'dropped frames' error message. However, when I capture through my IMac Desktop G5 onto the very same Lacie External drive I have no problems. Both the Powerbook G4 and the IMac Desktop G5 have about 20G of free space on each of their 80G Hard Drives. Any suggestions? Many Thanks!

There is a good chance that your problem is caused by
using the HD in USB 2 mode.
Most people consider USB 2 is unsuitable for video
    editing.
DV needs a drive capable of a consistent high speed
that can only be provided by FW.
Although the claimed speeds of USB 2 appear to be as
high, they are not because they are the MAXIMUM
speeds achieved and are not sustained. In the real
world USB 2 is barely half the speed of FW.
When using your PowerBook you could try
daisy-chaining your camera to the HD to the computer
    - by FW of course.
    Ian.
    Thanks! Great Advice!

  • System hard drive configuration help

    Hello everyone,
I am currently upgrading my hard drives to get the best performance possible for pc.  I have a couple questions regarding what size hard drives I should get for certain jobs.
    1.  What size hard drive do you recommend for a cache disk?  120gb SSD good enough?
    2. What size hard drive do you recommend for an export drive? Should it be an SSD or HDD? Once I export from premiere/after effects, I will move the file into my media drive anyways so does the hard drive have to be large?
So here is my setup as of right now.  It's terrible. Haha
-512gb ssd for os & programs
        -1TB hdd for everything.
As I have read on multiple forums/google, its best to have a hard drive for specific jobs.  I want to make sure I have the concept down.
This is the setup I would like to have......
-512gb ssd for os & programs
-2 TB hdd raid 0 configuration
        -120gb ssd cache
        -60gb ssd export drive
Is this a good/correct setup or should I change anything? I do not consider myself an expert on this subject at all so any help/opinions are appreciated!
    My PC specs are:
    Intel Core i7 5930K Hex-Core 3.5GHz
    16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2666Mhz (4x4GB)
Single EVGA 4GB NVIDIA GTX 970
    ASUS X99 Deluxe Motherboard
    Thanks!!
    -Matt

So you currently are aiming for
-512gb ssd for os & programs
-2 TB hdd raid 0 configuration
    -120gb ssd cache
    -60gb ssd export drive
Do you need 512 for OS / Applications? Seems a waste of a nice piece of hardware. If you can look at switching that for a smaller SSD and then you can use that as a export / target drive. If you are exporting raw or similar then 60GB's will be only a couple of minutes.
As for your raid 0 configuration, remember more = faster, the more drives in the array the faster the times are. With disk prices these I would consider 3 X 2 or 3TB drives. Not sure how many SATA ports you have. If you have more, add more drives.
**Edit - I use the same SSD target or export drive as my cache drive and have not seen any delays at any given time.

  • If I filled the system hard drive, and I'll delete anything on it, it's off and on the external drive, or can I safely clean the system hard drive and all that was done in the Time Machine in the same place, on an external hard drive and will remain ?

    Please help

Time Machine does delete "old" backups, eventually.  "Eventually" is controlled by whether or not you have used all of the space on the TM drive.  If you have "more free space" on the TM drive, then nothing should be deleted yet.
If youd elete files from a system drive, and continue on the same TM set, TM does NOT scour all old records to purge missing files ... else the "time" part of "Time Machine" makes no sense.

  • 17" MacBook Pro freezes after Capture to external hard drive!!!!!! HELP!!

Ok, so i just got my new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio last week, and i was so excited, until this happened. I was trying to log and capture a clip to my 500GB LaCie Big Disk and everything seemed to be going fine until the clip got to the end of it's alloted time and then the computer just froze. When I closed the lid and let the laptop sleep and opened it again the clip is in place and everything seems fine. I tried capturing then w/ the LaCie plugged into the FW8oo port and my miniDV Deck plugged into the FW4oo, and it froze again after capture and then worked fine after closing the lid. Thinking I was crowding my Fire Wire bus I hooked up an external USB 2.0 drive and my deck to the fire wire , but the same thing happened. So then I tried capturing to my internal and it worked fine. I've captured to an external on my 17" iMac G5 w/ Final Cut HD for years and never had a problem. Any tips? This closing the lid thing just isn't going to work.
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

nope, david is right on the mark. powermacs with one firewire bus choke like this. i can't understand why apple continues to design with one firewire bus but i'm not a designer. anyone, ANYONE who uses firewire harddrives and firewire tape machines/cameras for editing NEEDS to invest in a seperate sort of firewire card (pick your flavor) and then we'd see this behavior go away. then there will be those that will whine "this never happened before!" it's happening now, firewire cards a cheap insurance against these issues.
