Capture Utillity

Hey guys, I am a newer mac user and am wondering if there is a peice of sotware for the mac like I have for the PC. The one I have for the PC is called scenealyzer. It is a capture utillity that divides all the clips on the start/stop of when you were recording. It doesn't divide them any other place. It's fast and flawless. Now I just bought CatDV Live Capture Plus thinking and hoping it was the same thing. I am only having problems with it, It keeps dividing the clips where there is no start/stop of the camera, and I just can't get it to work right. Is there any other programs that are made for the mac that capture dv files that work in FCP for the mac? ( i need this software doing weddings because I will not waste my time sitting around all day logging, when I can just capture and have it break up all the clips itself. It's a real time saver).

What camera(s) were you shooting with?
Certain ones (Canons come to mind) have been reported to write weak time code tracks with the resulting captures highly problematic. That is, lots of 'time code breaks' reported even though the camera was running contirnuouly.
While not an external program, you can get something like what you want using components of FCP.
Do a full tape capture using Log&Capture.
Set your IN point at least 30 seconds into the tape and your OUT point about 30 seconds or so before the end of the timecode.
Log the tape as one clip,
Do a Batch capture.
This will bring in the whole tape in one shot (it only happens in real time however) but avoids all the significant problems of using Capture Now.
Once in the Browser, Highlight the clip
Select: Mark>DV Start/Stop Detect.
This will place markers at the camera start/stops.
Then, with all the markers on the clip highlighted,
select: Make Subclip (command U).
This will generate sub-clips from the markers. Subclips can be generally treated like discrete clips.
Be warned time remapping (slow mo or speeding up) sub-clips is highly problematic.
Still, I'd try to troubleshot why CatDV isn't working first simply because I HATE working with sub-clips (the time remapping issues are a deal breaker for me)
good luck.

Does anyone know of a good screen capture utility for the TouchPad?

  • Capture utility

I have a business where we video sewer lines for final inspection.  When an operator makes a mistake ( wrong manhole number, too dark, etc.) I use PE to edit and correct mistakes.  I first capture each line segments and save them on the hard drive.  PE often times will not find all of the segments and combines others.  I have to use Roxio to capture all the segments and save them.   Basically Roxio is better for  simple utility work where PE is  far better at editing.   Does Adobe sell a program that does well with capturing and editing material from DVDs?  Thank You.

Thank you.  I'm ripping videos from DVDs.  PE brings it over as  one big
vob file where Roxio identifies each individual segment or movie and  lets me
"rip" the ones I need.  Does Adobe have a more powerful or  versatile
    ripping tool?

If you are capturing video  from a tape-based camcorder or copying video
from a hard drive or SD card  camcorder, you should use Premiere Elements'
capture utility or its Video  Importer.
If you are getting video from a DVD, you should be  using Premiere

Along with recording the video i want to capture images as well(from the video stream itself) at regular intervals of say 6 seconds.
This is where i found the Recording Video Utility example.

  • Need an alternative capture utility for FCP6

Not crazy about the capture utility in FCP. Can anyone suggest a more sophisticated one?
    Steve
    Mac 8 core:)

    Thanks John,
I come from the PC world & use a program called scenalyzer http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html which is much more sophisticated then the FCP Capture utility.
    EX: Scenalyzer has preferences to:
    * ignore TC breaks
    * no outpoints necessary-once the Footage runs out on tape the capture stops & saves
    * you can stop a capture at any point & save it
    * it creates a cliplist that can be reused to recapture the tape at a later date, * you can capture multiple tapes at the same time
    * if someone records over an old tape scenalyzer can set date parameter range that could ignore it if a frame from a previous job is left in due to improper cuing
    * it also captures .bmp
It is has many options I miss. So I am looking for a capture utility that will give me more options. Below are the answers you asked for:
*I capture Mini DV & DVCAM. (I am an editor so I receive footage from many different sources). I have a Sony DSR-45 & Sony dsr30 as players
    * Both FW 400 & 800
*Sony DSR250 is my studio camera I use for capturing photos via FW400
    * FCP6 (Studio 2)
    * Gonna use the stills in Motion & FCP
*Capturing video to 3, 750 gig seagates raid0
*8 gigs of memory, 8 core intel mac
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Batch capture settings do not match project settings

Batch capture audio settings do not conform to project settings-
PROJECT SETTINGS ON CREATION OF NEW PROJECT:
For editing with IEEE1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) DV equipment.
    Standard NTSC video (4:3 interlaced).
    48kHz (16 bit) audio.
    Drop-Frame Timecode numbering.
    General
    Editing mode: DV NTSC
    Timebase: 29.97fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 720h 480v (0.9091)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9091)
    Fields: Lower Field First
    Audio Settings
    Sample rate: 48000 samples/second
    Default Sequence
    Total video tracks: 3
    Master track type: Stereo
    Mono tracks: 0
Please note audio setting for project 48kHz (16 bit) audio.
When I set for batch capture by creating off-line clips using the "Log Clip" option the off-line clip shows audio as
32KHZ 16-bit  everyting else is correct as project settings.
Just prior to creating the off-line batch capture clip I had sucessfully captured from the same device using the same tape shot with the above settings including 48khz 16-bit audio by using standard " Capture" by setting in & out then clicking Capture>In/Out.
I've looked at capture settings etc...unable to determine to change audio settings etc or why the audio settings under batch capture do not conform to project settings...
    Any ideas?
    Tnx,
    mick

    Thanks for your reply, Harm....
Well now...having negated all the possibilities you listed, I decided to do a an actual batch capture with clips which I previously logged which reported audio at 32kHz instead of the project setting of 48kHz:
    1. two clips  were selected from the same device/tape ( both selected from the logging util which erroneously reported audio at 32kHz) for the batch
    2. both clips captured "flawlessly"
    3. both clips after the batch capture then reported audio as being 48kHz
Btw, I also did a batch capture from the same device/tape in Pr 6.x...and it reported and captured at 48khz...I must say, I must prefer the legacy version of Pr 6 for batch capture which creates a log .pbl file which can then be easily exported as a csv to and .xls etc..IMO, much more useful...and useable..
    Mi dos pesos(.002US)
So it would appear there is some kind of bug in the Pr cs4 batch capture util that is erroneously reporting audio settings?
Should this go to the devel as a possible bug?
    Tnx,
    mick

  • Master collection CS4, how to keep "Date taken" in captured videos?

    Hello,
I have the master collection CS4 on a Vista system, and I can easily capture from my old Canon Elura DV tapes, with a firewire cable, either using Premiere Pro, or the simple Windows capture utility.
Now, no matter what file format I created, both AVI (big) and WMV (smaller) the files' "Date Taken" or "Date Shot" fields are blank. All Date modified/created and accessed are the date of the capture, which I do not really need, since my tapes are 8 years old... !
Windows Photo Gallery sorts your photo and videos by date taken, but this does not seem to be possible with captured DV videos...
Now, it seems such a simple feature to have the DV date/time stamp to be translated into the file "Date Taken" field, I am wondering how to do that.
Is there a plugin? Is there a workflow I am missing in premiere? or AfterEffects?
The date/time stamp is embeddded in the DV stream, and I read that a AVI capture will simply copy the DV stream to the HD, so how do I extract / see that information?
And, really, how come such a critical information is so hard to work with? I mean, don't professional movie makers want to know precisely when video clips have been shot?
    Thank you
    regards

    Hi,
hmm, I use SCLive to capture and the filename becomes the date taken and are numbered sequentially...as it can capture different avi files every time it sees the camera was shut off and turned back on...like those become "scenes" in a way..a new avi file.  But the date and numbers reflect what youre talking about.  I never captured using cs3 which is what I use.  SCLive is actually "better" at capturing mini dv tapes.
As for movie making the slate gives you that info...and when you start the edit you rename the captured footage according to the slate..so the filenames reflect more readily what the stuff is...
    eg. " scene3-take3-cu " or "scene5-take2-master"...etc.

  • Monitor and capture at the same time?

Is it possible to view/monitor a video (live from a quickcam) and capture at the same time?
I looked at the solution here:
    http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/solutions/index.html
And found "Video Capture Utility with Monitoring" sample program. However it only allows capture! There is no live display of video viewing while the capture is happening.

Actually, the sample program works once I uncheck Audio.
I do not have any Audio input device, so I guess that is causing the problem.

  • Capture error premiere pro cs3

I've got an ongoing capture error in premiere pro cs3 (on Mac OSX).
At around the 9 minute mark of capturing, it stops and says 'Unknown recorder error'. The footage is still captured if I stop it straight away but lost if I leave it for a while. I'm using canon hv30 camera to capture dv footage (not hdv) and can't seem to solve it. Any suggestions?

Try a different capture utility.  VideoHelp.com will list plenty of free alternatives.  If they stumble as well, there ie likely something wrong with the tape at that spot.

  • No preview during capture issue

Hi - I have Adobe Premiere setup to show me the video while it's capturing it form my camcorder, but for some reason it only shows the first frame at that's it.  it does capture it correctly.  What could be the issue?
    Thanks,
    Roberto

Hmm.  I've not yet seen this issue under these conditions.  The Scenalyzer suggestion may be worth investigation.  WinDV is another capture utility, not quite as feature rich as Scenalyzer, but it is free.

  • Changing capture size in QT Pro?

We have two dual core G5's which we use to capture video in quicktime pro. On these machines the default size for H.264 is 320x240, which is what we want. I also want to capture video in QT pro on an older G4. However, it gives me 240x180 as a capture setting for H.264. Is there a way to change this that I'm just not seeing?

Is there a way to change this that I'm just not seeing? No. As Colin has indicated, the QT Pro capture feature is "adaptive" based on platform/CPU power available. If you want a stable size and data rate, either use an editing application (e.g., iMovie, FCE, FCP, etc) or a dedicated capture utility (e.g., Vidi) to capture in device native (DV) and convert as needed. Otherwise the capture/conversion settings will vary dependent of workload and the platform/CPU running QT Pro.

  • Batch Capture (Re-Capture) with Free Run TC

I'm batch capturing footage from 5 years ago for a client that wants another copy of their video. 1 tape was shot REC RUN timecode and it batch captured without issue. However, the 2nd tape is FREE RUN timecode and the capture utility bounces all over the place trying to find the in point. 50 clips, 0 successful captures.
Have adjusted handles, etc....no dice. I actually had re-captured this tape in CS4 a few years back and it worked fine, might have lost one clip total. Now in CS5, nada.
Let me know if anyone has an idea what I can do to make PPro park the playback right on the in point without trying to preroll, because nothing I've tried so far has worked.
For all I know it's a specific issue with CS5...dunno....I turned my back on MiniDV tape a while back and have not tried it since.
Using CS5, PC, Panasonic camcorder is the capture device.
    Thanks!

    Ann Bens wrote:
Why not capture the whole tape with scene detection.
Then chuck out the clips you do not want.
Ultimately this is what I intend to do if I can't find a resolution for this issue by the time I start working on the project again tomorrow. It should work, re-linking clips doesn't involve preroll or handles so I don't expect any problems going that route. I do expect to capture about twice as much footage as I actually need, as you indicated, so that will be a small hassle but that seems to be the workaround for the moment.
Thanks for the responses....if anyone else has something they'd like to add (or if anyone is aware of this kind of thing being a recognized bug) feel free to weigh in here. I might file a bug report...it seems to be that the preroll settings are not being recognized, or something along those lines.
Oh, I should also have noted that this is a fresh (er...4 week old) install of CS5 on a fresh (ahem...also 4 week old) install of Win7 x64. So there's not an application conflict...this is just an Adobe computer for all intents and purposes.

  • Can't screen capture popup windows in Flex web-based application

    Hi all,
I'm a tech writer looking for a tool that will capture single popup windows of a flex-based web application (perl popups have the same issue).
Snagit (and all the freeware I've tried), doesn't recognize the popup window as a selectable element, even though the mouse can move the popup window anywhere in the application window.
We've got lots of snapshots to take, and do not want to have to crop a region and edit out the white space (top of the popup box has square corners, bottoms are rounded).
Does anyone know of a screen capture utility or way to get these windows in a single click like we can with the standard old window dialog boxes?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    joan

    Hi Alex,
    I don't quite understand.
Are you suggesting a way to get the snapshots from the server generating the image and not as an end user who opens the application and trys snapping from the Internet Explorer browser window?
I'll need to be more specific when communicating with the developer. Can you provide a little more direction?
    Thank you!
    :-) joan
