Capture while filming?

I'm using a hdv camcorder and wanted to know if i can capture the footage at the same time as i record it - say via firewire to a macbook pro? (capturing it as normal dv rather than hdv is fine) I've tried the capture now option and this doesn't work.

So what do you all think is the optimum way to capture while shooting? I'm guessing Io HD will prove to be the way to go here, but out of reach of many budgets I suppose.
There really are instances where this workflow is needed... I can remember times where a shoot on day 1 had to have an edit done for first thing on day 2... I stayed up all night more than one time to get this done for the client. In these cases, had the media been captured for me while it was shot, it sure would have saved a bunch of time getting started on the edit.
I'd not want to capture any material whose timecode doesn't match what's on the recording media. I also think that capturing on set keeps a lot of shooting errors at bay. The workflow to peruse footage shot before a set is broken down isn't a bad idea at all in most cases. Arguments can certainly be made in the case of narrative film shoots, where the editor's emotional attachment to any given shot or scene shouldn't be affected by what happened on the set behind the camera or whatever. Walter Murch makes a point of not going to the set for this very reason. It's not a bad point of view...
When we started shooting P2 at the school, almost all errors of crossing the line, or setting up lighting with the wrong white balance going on just disappeared. Shots that weren't on the shot sheet were added when a rough of the scene was looked at in fact. I can see situations where a rough cut on the set just makes a lot of sense. Course this might involve more than the gear; a crew member addition (the editor) as well. But a producer would pay for an editor to become familiar with the footage whether or not he gets it on set... so I suppose that the cost of doing this isn't really all that great if not nullified by this.

Message capturing while submitting a report in background

Hi All,
I am submitting a report in background using job_open and job_close fucntion modules. I want to capture all messages coming while running the report. I am able to capture messages coming in the output but not able to capture the messages coming in the below status bar(error messages). If some error message comes in the selection screen of the submitted report.
Kindly let me know the way in which i can capture those status error messages.

and you can store your exception in and ztable you want .
at end of report .

Video Screen dimming while filming using iPhone 6

As you can see in this video..
it seems as if a light was turned off while in fact nothing happened...
And this has occured in several videos which i have filmed using iPhone 6

UPDATE
So, after working with the guys at Apple, they were able to provide a solution. Now I have no problems using Home Sharing with my iPhone 6 Plus!!!
(I should add that I have the Linksys Advanced Dual-Band N Router (E2500))
The issue was fixed by giving one of the wi-fi channels a different name, thus splitting the channels into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Then, I connected my iPhone to one channel (2.4 GHz) and my MacBook Pro to the other channel (5GHz). In this configuration, I have had no issues streaming my music and video.
It seems that the problem is some kind of interference between both devices when using the same channel (i.e., when both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel share the same name).

Unplanned cost to be captured while doing at MIRO

As per our current OBYC setting, unplanned cost is going to another Miscellaneous account, Is there a way to capture unplanned cost in the material G/L account ?

There may be different options available in SAP of unplanned Cost:-
1. Put that it in Unplanned Cost while MIRO then system will post either to separate GL or Stock Acct as per the setting in SPRO.
IMG - >MM - >Invoice Verification - >incoming invoice - >Configure How Unplanned Delivery Costs Are Posted
2. After Posting the MIRO, Put that cost in Subsiquent Debit for that Delivery note or PO Number. and it will be updated in PO history also and good for reporting
system will distribute in stock material acct as per available stock and rest in PRD acct.
3. You can post that cost in Separate GL after doing Setting in SPRO, GL Tab will appear in MIRO screen and post that cost there for e.g. GL for unplanned Cost.
SPRO> Material Management>Logistics Invoice Verification->Incoming Invoice->Activate Direct Posting to G/L Accounts and Material Account

How to record video or use screen capture WHILE capturing audio from Logic??

Hi,
I want to record my self playing guitar and singing using my mac book pro built in camera. I want the audio to come from Logic so I can add whatever effects I want to the vocals. When I say audio from Logic I don't mean recording in Logic and adding it in post. I want it to be on the fly.
What I used to do was use the screen capturing program Snapz Pro. I would screen capture a box around photobooth for the video, and then record while having Logic's audio in the background. It screen captures my entire computers audio. So for example if I get an aim message the bleep would show up in the recording. Or if I raise the volume or lower it the little click sound fx would be in it as well.
Capturing the audio this way let me get Logic's audio effects in my video on the fly. It worked out great....until now! :/
I just got the audio interface "Duet 2". And am using a microphone instead of my mbp's built in one. When ever I tried to record and capture my systems audio - my entire computer would crash. Snapz Pro won't work with the system audio with the interface. It works fine without it though.
I then tried to use Quicktime's new movie recording feature. I see it only gives an option for microphone and now system audio. So I got soundflower to re route the audio but that doesn't help either. This is because when you capture this way you can't hear anything while your capturing. So if I were to record a video and wanted Logics audio in it, I would have to set the output to Soundflower first. So when I record I cant hear myself which defeats the purpose.
So my final question is, how can I record video while having Logic's audio? I don't need to record with the mic, because in Logic the mic audio is going thru the system audio with everything else.
I would like to use a process more similiar to Quicktimes straight movie recording instead of doing an odd way like I used to screen capturing a box around the photobooth screen.

Capture while editing?

here's what i want to do:
while working a sequence i'd like to be able to capture entire tapes in the "background". i am looking for either on-board or third party options. my only criteria is that reel info and timecode captured in the background be accurate and come across accrately into fcp. i will be capturing mostly dv via firewire.
this feels like a kind of obvious question, so forgive me if there is something i have clearly missed.

The software is not capable of doing that. And even if it was, your system could not process the data fast enough not to drop frames.
A 2nd system would be in order. Capture to it on a separate drive then integrate the clips into your main project and move the media over to the main drive. Rinse, repeat.
I've worked with companies who have mac mini's with KVM switches, solely as capturing stations for firewire media. Not officially recommended by Apple, but it is working for them as a fairly low cost option.

Live video capture while playing back another video track?

Is it possible to capture live video while another video track is being played back? I would like to do this for multitrack video recording of music: a) record a video track, then b) record a second video track while listening to/watching the first. Exactly like multitrack recording of audio as in Garage Band, but with video.

I'm not too familiar with video editing (yet), so please forgive me if I've misunderstood your suggestions. I think what I'm talking about would have to be done post (after shooting multiple video tracks?), and couldn't be done with video switching (live switching between multiple video feeds?). What it boils down to in my mind is precise synchronization of a new capture with something pre-recorded (be it audio or video). If no software can do this (yet), perhaps there's a way to do it with additional hardware, for example playing video on a monitor while simultaneously recording with a camera, assuming the devices can be synchronized somehow?

I need to capture while continuing to edit and export to tape, bad idea?

Is it possible to use a different capture program (other than iMovie) to capture DV footage while I continue to do cuts only editing with Final Cut and perhaps even exporting to tape through a different deck on a Dual 2.0 G5 with two hard drives? I understand that I need a program that captures the clip as a QT movie at 48 kHz.
I need to do this in order to justify moving from a linear edit system for news.
What would be the recommended system capable of this?

Licensing issues prevent us from just dumping our feeds onto one server and then connecting it to all the edit bays with Gigabit. But cost is a big factor for us since we are small. One machine at a time is what we can do since it's all new to us and unproven, really. Prove that it can be faster, then, we can move to put a G5 in every edit bay. Right now the editors can record a feed of several stories and continue to edit in the bay. They order the feed, then hit record and go back to work.
Only one deck isn't a problem, the importing will come from a router going thru a DV bridge. But just as long as we can import while we continue to do some cuts only editing, no effects, no filters while we import. No need to export at the same time, tho that would be cool if ever possible.
Once all the stories are done for the show, we will export, perhaps just play back off FCP during the show, easier for the tape op to just hit the spacebar I guess.
basically the question is, what bare bones capture utility will grab our 48kHz DV footage and give us enough CPU left that it won't crash when we go back to editing?

As usual, Jim is correct. There's a reasonable possibility that something could go wrong with the capture; without a tape backup you would be hosed.
Here's what I do for live multi-camera recording (it works as well for single camera setups):
• Connect all cameras to a video switcher/DVE
• Connect the switcher's output to a DVCam VTR
• Connect all audio sources to an audio mixer
• Connect the audio mixer's output to the same DVCam VTR
• Connect the DVCam's Firewire output to my Mac
With this set up I can switch/mix live between cameras while recording to the VTR and simultaneously to the Mac in FCP.
Not only do I end up with the live mix recorded to tape and captured in FCP, I also run 'safety' tapes in each camera for additional backup in case the TD (me) makes an error.

CAPTURING FOOTAGE FILMED IN LP MODE

I was unfortunately given several MiniDV tapes and found that the person filming, filmed it in LP mode. When I try to capture it in FCP, it keeps stopping after 15 - 20 secs. Is there any resolution to this? Is that a capture setting I can reconfigure to accept the LP footage? Thanks

What do you mean by "stopping"?
Does FCP abort the capture is that what you mean?
If you try and play the tape on your ceck without FCP does it "stop" then too?
The tape you have may have problems playing on your deck if it came from another camera.

Break in timecode while filming

My camera beeped when beginning another audio take, so I knew I had lost TC while recording.... but I thought I could capture NOW without TC. Thanks

If you do a 'Capture Now' and you know you have Timecode breaks, set device control in FCP to "Non-Controllable Device."
Alternatively you could dub the tape to a fresh tape (FW to FW) with new timecode, then capture from the new tape.

Capture edited film to FCPX

I have a few edited films on dv tape and I want to capture them to fcpx as a film. when I tried it appeared as separeted clips. is it possible or is there any other software to do that.

Did you also find that FCP X arranged the clips as they were chronologically shot thus jumbling up the films.
Frequently when you edit you use clips in a non-chronological order.
I had this problem which rendered my films useless.
The only solution I found was to import the films into Final Cut Express or FCP versions 1 to 7.
Any "old" editing app should be able to do the job.
On the other hand assuming that all the clips in the film are used chronologically, the fact that they are split will not cause any problem.

Unable to capture while external00 plugged in, vice versa

Ok, so first time i captured to my external harddrive it all went gravy. second time not so. If my external is plugged in, and I go to log and capture, it does not recognize that there is a camera plugged in through the firewire 400. vice versa. if i have my camera plugged in first and go to capture and log and then plug in my external to set the scratch disks, no way jose. starts freesing up and the spin wheel of death starts spinning. Why would this happen? Solution? Let me know. I need to edit!
