Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...
Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
FYI...

FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
Appreciate everyone's help as always!
Rene.
To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

Pen Tool Question...
The Pen Tool is my favorite / go to selection tool. But can it do the following...
I've made a path and converted it to a selection, then filled the area with a color or texture (on it's own layer).
Now I find that I need to adjust (fine tune) the shape I've created / filled with color or texture to better fit how / where it's being used. Is is possible to invoke the path handles and get it to adjust the filled area as you move / adjust the path. (This is not a shape, not using the shape tool.)
I can select the filled path / layer and free transform but that does not give me a fine enough adjustment.
Puppet Warp doesn't really fit the bill either.
A good example of what I want to achieve is similar to when you put type on a path. When you adjust the path the type moves to conform to the changes in the path. I want to do the same thing with the area I filled using the path.
Possible??
If not, this would be a great feature request!!!
thanks folks for any input

Just to follow up on your answer....
Yes this works very well for what I'm trying to accomplish.
Thanks again.
Just an fyi, I'm also a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member.
I posted my same question on the NAPP forum. I still haven't gotten a response for anyone over there.
I'm not knocking NAPP, it's a great organization and I've been a member since 2006.
But I'm pleased with how much faster answers to questions come from this Adobe Photoshop forum.
Keep up the good work!!

IMac can not share internet with new MBP
I just purchased a 13" MBP(10.5.7)and wanted to update software, register, etc. I'm trying to share the internet from my G5 iMac(10.5.7). With airport turned on,I've turned on internet sharing from ethernet to airport on the imac but the Radar icon does not display the "arrow" to show that the iMac is acting like a base station. The firewall setting in the security pref. is set to allow all incoming connections. i keep trying different combinations of settings but the only change is a light gray "monitor" icon on the airport radar in the tool bar. ( and I can't seem to repeat that)The new MBP sees the iMac in the airport drop down menue but does not connect, it says it needs a password but none was established on the imac. When opening safari is says not connected to internet. I've read many post regarding sharing but I must admit I'm confused. I thought this was supposed to be simple.
Thanks for any responsesI have done those things. I tried the same with an older ibook and three clicks and the airport icon showed an arrow (signaling it now is a base station) no problem but not on either of the leopard machines. is there a problem with sharing using leopard?
When I set the imac to share the ethernet connection and choose by airport the red Button changes to green. the preference window says "sharing your ethernet connection" but no change at the icon on the upper right menu bar. (I've always thought it changes to an arrow over the "radar" icon) if I close the sharing window and then reopen it or turn the airport on/off the internet sharing box becomes unchecked and sharing is turned off. I can't seem to get the radar icon to change and the sharing settings to stay "set". -
Hey gurus, I am trying to digitalize a friend's sketch and am running into a few issues.
1) Every time I start drawing a new path with the pen tool, the fill is black and there is no stroke. This is a problem because it starts to cover up the path I'm trying to trace, so I have to select the unfinished path with the selection tool and then remove the fill and add a stroke and then find my place on the path once again. I'm sure there's a way to change the default, but I have not seen it.
2) Some of my connection points are a little jaggy... If i'm getting some jagged edges, does that mean I'm using too many points? Or is it just a matter of endless tinkering with the handles to get it perfectly rounded/smooth?
Thanks! One thing I would recommend is to change your default Graphic Style. It might make your work go a little faster if outline mode isn't working for you.
1) Select the object with the fill/stroke combination you want to make the default. In my case, I have a shape with a pink fill and no stroke.
2) Open the Graphic Styles panel by clicking the icon highighted below, or by going to Window > Graphic Styles.
3) Click on the New Graphic Style button in the Graphic Styles panel. You will see a new swatch appear.
4) Hold the option key, then click and drag the swatch you just made over the current default swatch, as shown.
Now, if I have an object that isn't filled with pink, I can simply select it and hit the D key.
I hope this helps! -
I need some help fast. I bought my wife a new MBP and in setting everything up we inadvertently setup a new and wrong iTunes account. We haven't transferred anything yet, I want to get this account off her computer before I bring everything from her Win 7 machine.
Can't find any specific instructions, can somebody help me out?
Thanks!
MarkIt's late so this will be rather short:
1. Make sure you update the older version of iTunes to the latest version
2. Go into iTunes Settings and Authorize iTunes with your Apple ID and Password
3. In settings, turn off Automatice sync
4. Connect your iPad and once recognized, right click the device from the left side of the the iTunes screen
5. Transfer purchases
6. You can then sync
A lot to digest and I don't have the time to walk you through every step. If you need to, google the points and you'll find lot's of information on where to find these in iTunes. -
XP can't see the CDFS Boot Camp Volume on Leopard DVD with New MBP
My new MBP 2.4 works fine in OSX aside from this annoying issue where my fresh XP Bootcamp install doesn't detect the PC compatible image on the Leopard Install DVD1 disc to run the Boot Camp installer program and load the drivers and software. At first I thought it could possibly be my superdrive but after checking the disc on the XP and Vista machines in the house including the one with Macdrive on they can't pickup the Boot Camp installer either. My old retail Leopard DVD does work perfectly, but as the new MBP has newer drivers than the original image and the 2.1 update only the sound driver has been installed
I've put a support request ordering the replacement DVD's but they aren't due to arrive till the 21-24th Dec (sent by UK Royal Mail means after the 27th) and when my Thinkpad CPU fan broke last night I need this XP setup for work fixing Windows boxes a lot sooner than 10 days.
Has anyone got any ideas where I can get the newer drivers in any kind of format on the internet so I can get XP up and running before Santa arrives?Hi,
sorry to hear of such bad luck.
Sadly there is no official download possibility for the drivers you need.
Unless someone has put them on a Torrent site...
Since even your Windows PC can't read the Windows portion of the OSX DVD it is most likely that they are defect.
But you still try this procedure for gaining access to it http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060823101421566

No Graphics Card option with new MBP 17"
I have a new MBP 17" laptop, and I can not change my graphic card options. I've looked at the support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3207) about changing the settings, but my problem is that the Energy Saver system pane does not give me the Graphics option in the top left of the window as shown in the support document. I've tried disconnecting the power supply to see if that would bring up the option, but to no avail.
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions? I can't even tell which video processor the machine is currently using.Take the computer to an Apple retailer or back to where you purchased it and have the problem fixed. The computer is under warranty. Otherwise the only thing you can try is to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X or do the following if possible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Swapping HDs with new MBP: What to do with OS X?
I purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i7 quad-core from the Apple Store Thursday morning with the 750GB 5400RPM hard drive. I now have time to set up the new machine but I am hung up on how best to deal with swapping hard drives. My current MBP has a 640GB 7200RPM hard drive with OS X 10.6.6 installed. I am a photographer so the faster drive makes a big difference with large photo catalogs. I had planned on swapping out the new 750GB 5400RPM drive for my current 640GB 7200RPM hard drive and then get back to work, however, I am concerned that the OS X installed on the 640GB 7200RPM hard drive will not be compatible with the new machine's processor. Should I do the swap and then boot up from the new laptop's OS X install disks and do a OS X only install? I have never done a OS X only install/update, will any other data be altered, any suggestions on how to proceed? Should I just swap, start up and then run Apple Software Update?
I would prefer avoiding an erase and install, cloning, migration, Adobe registration issues, etc and going the HD swap and OS X disk update route if it can work.
Thanks for your input,
ChadI found this discussing looking to do the same thing-ish.
I just bought a new i7 quad MacBook Pro (delivered today). Less than 4 weeks ago, I had picked up an i5 MacBook Pro. Since I'm still in my return window, I decided the buy the new one, do the hard drive shuffle and return the less new one.
I have a 500gb 7200rpm drive AND a 120gb SSD in the drive bay. I really never considered just swapping the drives into the new machine, but I thought I'd search and see if anyone had any success.
I had a couple thoughts on how I'm going to do the shuffle:
1) Superduper clone the SSD back onto my 500gb. I the system as it is now started life on the 500gb. Superduper (registered) will do a backup only updating the changed files which shouldn't be too bad. I have my user directories (separate from the startup disk) on the 500gb so SD won't have to copy any of those files. Then I figured I could use the migration software to copy all my 'stuff' (minus user directory) back onto the newly reformatted SSD with 10.6 installed onto the new MBP.
2) I was noticing that migration assistant can work from Time Machine, so I'll probably do that since my SSD time machine backup doesn't contain my gigantic user directory. I'll still do a SuperDuper backup just to be safe.
I'm tempted to throw my hard drive into an external usb to see if it boots just for the heck of it. -
I'm in need of help deciding which power setup to use with new MBP
Hello all,
So - after using an original 1.83 MBP for many years w/Aperture... I've recently acquired a new MBP!
and initially I had the power setup for better battery life... and often found myself wondering, "hmmm...considering this thing has way more juice under the hood - it sure doesn't run much quicker than the old one?!?!"
And then I realized - I had the lesser video chip running!
When I turned on the better performance - and then ran Aperture (likely my most demanding process) holy Crap! Does this thing Fly!!!
Now the problem; hence my question - is:
"is there a way to set it up so that while under battery power it runs on the better battery life option, yet when plugged in to endless power - it will run on better performance?" it would be much nicer - let alone make much more sense if this option was clear-cut & simple to select... or am I just missing it some where in the menus? Seems that you can only have one or the other, despite battery or plugin power. And to switch means logging out and the re-logging back in...?!?!?!
Any thoughts?"is there a way to set it up so that while under battery power it runs on the better battery life option, yet when plugged in to endless power - it will run on better performance?"
No, there isn't. You're right — it would be nicer if there were.
Seems that you can only have one or the other, despite battery or plugin power. And to switch means logging out and the re-logging back in...
That's correct. -
Safari always crashes on launch with new MBP
I just bought a new MBP and Safari always crashes about 10 seconds after launching. I've installed all updates and I don't have any extensions installed (and turned them off completely just to make sure).
If I sign into a Guest account, though, Safari works perfectly fine - was able to install Chrome this way, and have been using the laptop for the past week with no other issues.
So I'm assuming this is an issue with my account. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

How do I stop the pen tool from wanting to add to paths under what I'm trying to draw when it touches another anchor point?
Ridiculous as it is, in Illustrator you are actually supposed to:
1. Mousedown some distance away from where you want the new path to begin (away from the endpoint of the unselected pre-existing path).
2. Press and hold the Spacebar.
3. Drag to where you want the new path to begin. Mouseup. (The point will be placed without the infernal auto-join behavior.)
4. Release the Spacebar.
The Pen has no business affecting unselected paths by default. It violates the entire meaning of selection. Worst-of-class Bezier drawing interface.

5.1 speakers with new MBP
Hi,
I have just bought a new MBP, my first Mac Loving it!
I have a 5.1 Philips speaker system (SPA2602/05) that I used to us with my old laptop, I also bought an external usb sound card to make it compatible. However, the sound card is not compatible with Mac and I can't find similar for Mac.
How can I get it them to work with my MBP? (it has 3 headphone cable thingys....)The MBP will only output surround sound through an optical (TOSLink) cable (and only when surround sound is provided by the audio source being used). If your speaker system has no TOSLink input port, then you'll have to find a device that does, and that can convert the digital optical output from the MBP into the analog signals your speakers require. Ordinarily, that function would be performed by an AV receiver.

I have a G4 running 10.4.1. Trying to use use Illustrator10. First issue is screen redraw when I scroll. The more I scroll the lighter the screen image until it goes away. The only way to get it back is Command +, - . The second issue is the pen tool. Sometimes (most time!) I need to adjust the only way to make the points active is to use the "convert anchor point", do a Command Z then I can use the direct selection tool on all points, they are active. Sometime that doesn't work either. Can anyone tell me what's going on? and what to do about it. Thanks so much!
You know if you want to make your life a little more productive and though it is expensive you might upgrade the computer as well as the application expensive yes.
If you can't afford a Mac there is a Mac clone out there that is very reasonably priced.
You can load Mac OS X on it.It is intel based.
But you probably want to upgrade. It took me a while and though I have my Mac Intel for 2 years only I think it might even be tie for me to take advantage of the possibility of the 64 bit applications for CS5. It would work on my system but I would like to experience the real power of it with an up to date system. -
Buying a new MBP - hard drive repacement questions...
Does replacing the HD in a new MBP void the warranty? I've searched the forums but it seems there's no firm answer. Basically if I buy a new 13" I want to upgrade the HD (I Think) to the 500GB 7200 Drive (probably Seagate momentus), but I'm concerned about heat and noise issues. is there a huge performance boost between the offered 500 GB 5400 Drive? I am planing on buying the $1400 version so I get the 4GB RAM and the faster processor to start with. Is that worth the price? What about battery life - I'm concerned now that it's not replaceable that a 7200 drive would waste that battery too quickly.
Go with 500 GB, the Seagate is fine. The 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm will give a modest performance boost, and there is really minimal additional heat, noise and power consumption with a faster spinning drive (it might mean 10 minutes shorter run time of the 5-7 hours from a full battery charge).
Be sure to order the drive without the G-force protection. The MBP has it's own internal accelerometer, and the two may conflict, so get the drive that lacks that feature.
Instructions for DIY HDD swap are on p. 37 of the manual:

Anyone NOT having Keyboard problems with newer MBP!
After reading about all the keyboard problems on the newer MBPs, is there anyone NOT having keyboard lockups or dropping letter problems? Looking to purchase a MBP soon but after reading about the many keyboard problems I will probably postpone or decide to get a different machine.
There might be a couple of things to try. You could borrow an external keyboard to use for a while--or even buy a cheap one used, and see if you still have problems or not. If you don't, there's likely a problem with the MBP keyboard itself.
Also, if you have access to an Apple Store, you might be able to make an appointment with the genius bar and get a definite diagnosis. It may be possible to arrange to get in a replacement keyboard at the Apple Store and have them fix it while you wait. Don't know for sure if that would be possible, but it's worth asking. Same with an Apple authorized repair shop--it might be possible to get it fixed without having to send it off.
Good luck!
