Captured 24A footage wildly out of sync in FCP, but fine in QT

I just captured a bunch of 24A footage I shot on my Panasonic DVX100A and was dismayed to find that the clips were all wildly out of sync when I opened them in FCP--even though they are fine when I open the captured files directly in QT on my desktop. But when I play these same clips in FCP, the audio slips so steadily out of sync that on one 47 minute take, the video ended seven minutes before the audio, so the clip ends with seven minutes of sound against a black screen!
I actually found a workaround for this problem in a thread started by another poster with a similar sync problem. On that thread someone suggested that if I simply opened the underlying file as a QT movie on my desktop and then edited a second or two from the beginning, and saved it as a new Self Contained QT movie, I could import that one into FCP and it would have no sync issues. For reasons I still don't quite understand, that workaround solved the problem almost every time.
Until now, when not even that convoluted solution seems to help with this latest clip. Even after shaving the ends and saving it with a new name, the resultant QT file still imports into FCP with the same off sync problem.
Obviously, the best solution would be to figure out why clips are capturing with bad sync in the first place. For the record, I've shot and captured many, many hours of 24A footage from this camera in the past without experiencing any syn issues. As far as I can tell, the audio was shot and captured at 48.0 KHZ, just like always. (And the out of sync clip shows up as having 48.0 KHZ audio in the FCP browser.)
Since it was shot at 24A, I captured it using Advanced Pulldown removal as always. (Oddly, I notice in the browser info window that the clip shows up as 29.97 fps and not 23.98--if that's a clue to anyone.)
Thanks for your guidance on a sticky issue that has me stopped in my tracks.

Hello GeeFor,
I was browsing for a different audio sync issue and came across your post. It caught my attention because I believe that I've ran into the same problem before and figured out what causes it, so I thought I'd share my experience.
You said that you've noticed that FCP initially recognizes the problem clips as 29.97, even though you've captured the 24PA footage with Advanced Pulldown. I've found that if, while you are capturing 24PA footage, you allow the capture to go beyond the recorded footage and into blank tape, that FCP recognizes the entire clip as 29.97. This causes audio sync problems, and if you end up trying to do a final export, will cause video problems as well.
I've successfully duplicated this problem and the solution is to make sure to stop your capture before your 24PA footage ends and blank tape begins. One way to avoid the problem is to record black to the entire tape while on the 24PA setting prior to filming. I normally just record an extra minute or two while on location at the end of the footage.
I think your work around in Quicktime works because you are effectively removing the break in timecode at the end of the clip, therefore FCP sees a start and end timecode that matches the 24PA settings.
I hope this fixes your issue, I'd be curious to know if it does. I did a lot of trial and error to figure out what my problem/solution was and I couldn't find anything in the forums that helped with my particular issue.

  • Captured content: Audio is out of sync from video

When I capture video off my Panasonic AG-DV2500 into FCP 5, the audio is around 17 frames behind. Does anyone have some advise for this problem?

It's not in the monitor. In recent projects, I've corrected the audio by 17 frames, and the final export does not reveal anything different. Good thought though.

  • Out of Sync in FCP

I captured some footage for an edit. 10 tapes all together, miniDV. the last tape is totally out of sync when brought into Final Cut, both in the Viewer and Timeline. Its plays perfectly fine when opened with Quicktime in the Finder.
Only when I bring it into FCP will it go nuts. I can't even slide the audio into sync because I believe the video speed is changed somehow in FCP. Any solution to this?
    audio rate 48khz.

  • Processing in STP causes out-of-sync in FCP

Mixing multitrack live band performances. After sending tracks to Soundtrack Pro for normalization, EQing, effecting etc. and round tripping back to FCP they now get out of sync with live performance video over the course of time.
Doesn't happen if I use FCP audio filters directly on the clips in timeline - but FCP's effects are so much more crude and limited. Is there a way to make Emagic's plug-ins from Logic (now also used in Soundtrack Pro) available directly in FCP ??

Having the same problem. A 4 minute song recorded from the deck during performance doesn't sync with the video footage after time. Anybody got any tips or this? Was working perfectly up until yesterday, no sync probs at all. I went in to do another mix and it's all gone pear-shaped.

  • Audio & Video out of sync in itunes but not quicktime

My audio and video has never been in sync in itunes. It has been years since I have been able to watch a movie using iTunes. When I use quicktime, everything is fine, but when I use itunes, the audio and video falls out of sync. I have tried all of the suggested steps from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1718
    I am running iTunes 10.4 - 64 bit version
    I have Windows 7 64 bit
6 GB or Ram, Quad core i7 920 cpu
2x Nvidia Geforce 285 - I have tried running it in SLI and not in SLI
I'm constantly updating my drivers and as of today (7/24/11) I have everything up to date.
Does ANYONE know whats going on?! I love using iTunes, but this is just rediculous!

I have the exact same issue, it is preventing me from using iTunes to purchase Movies and TV Shows.
    I too have an Intel i7 - 6GB RAM, and GTX 460.
    Drivers are up to date.

  • Audio falls out of sync with FCP sequence after export from STP

    Hey all,
editing sound on a short film. sent FCP sequence to sweeten the dialog and add effects, according to the timeline it is the same length as sequence length in
FCP, but when exporting from STP to FCP to complete movie, the sound ends up being about 10 frames longer than the video and starts in sync and falls out of sync over the duration of the film.
Have tried changing preference settings in STP, exported about 5 ways to breakfast and all have same result.
Anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Much thanks,
    Holly

I just experienced this same thing, and as Christof says, it had to do with 'Easy Setup' and 'all formats'. I've been editing a picture shot on RED in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) at 2K (2048 x 1152) and 24fps...FCS 3 (FCP 7 latest version). Whenever you trash preferences or start up FCP new, you get the 'easy setup' menu. Previously, I could just hit 'okay' and go ahead into FCP and change the settings/resolutions within the project...even if the 'easy setup' default was, say, DV/NTSC 29.97. Also, when opening up an active project after trashing prefs, the project itself would still have the same editing/playback settings/resolutions, even if the 'easy setup' window had its default DV/NTSC setting. Plus, if you create a new timeline and its default is one format, once you drop a different format into it, it asks you if it should adjust to that format anyway, and of course, you say yes and everything is fine.
Well....in this most recent FCP update, whenever I'd export an AIFF from the timeline and reimport....or if I'd just import an AIFF...it would do something to the playback rate of that newly imported/reimported sound file and suddenly its sync has drifted all over the place within just a minute or so. But strangely, it wouldn't do it to audio that's attached to picture (.mov/MP4/etc.)....only isolated audio files (AIFF/WAV). So naturally, I wondered if something was going on during the export process or the like.
The solution is to make sure that when you open FCP (newly, or after trashing prefs), make sure you pick the settings/format/framerate in that 'Easy Setup' window that matches what you intend to edit as closely as possible. In my case, the format is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 2048 x 1152 @ 24fps, and I use a Blackmagic Multibridge so I have settings for it. Hence......*Format; HD, Frame Rate: 24, Use: Blackmagic HDTV 1080P 24 - 10 bit.* Whereas the default upon startup is....Format: (all formats), Frame Rate: 29.97, Use: DV/NTSC 48KHz.
You can also set these in the 'Audio Video Settings' menu. Now, whenever I export and reimport an AIFF, or just import an AIFF (like the soundmix prepared by our sound designer), sync stays and there's no drift. So make sure you've picked the right settings when starting or reopening a project, again as Christof pointed out.

  • Send to STP makes audio out of sync on FCP (TC 30)

    Good day
I REALLY hope someone can help me because i am really struggling at the moment
When i say send to Sound track pro audio project i fix the audio and do what i need to do but once i save the audio a green line appears above the sent audio and the audio down the line is out of sync.
Now i can work out why it is out of sync but i have NO idea how to change the TC(timecode) rate on fcp so that it is 25 instead of 30, i have set everything to 25 but yet whenever my send audio comes back it arrives as TC 30
Can someone please help me? or just give me a workaround that won't take excessive amounts of time?
What i do notice though is it is only the pal guys experiencing problems.
    Peder

It'd be nice is someone from Apple would care to comment on this phenomena.
The only feedback you will ever get from Apple on this forum, or any other, is that your post has been removed for inappropriate behaviour. You can use the "Provide Feedback" button under the application title menu. Your report will be evaluated and prioritized -- ie "Will this affect the sales performance of the iPhone?" and dealt with accordingly.
Then the issue may or may not be fixed with the next version.
There is probably a subset of rules associated with exporting Multiclips, even in COLOR 1.5. Of course they are completely incompatible with previous versions for starters, but with the current release, you're probably prohibited from exporting multiclips with any speed changes, filters or transition effects... something like that.
I never, never, never, never use them period. Realistically, if you cannot lock the edit and export a Media Managed version, then you're equally not likely to be ready to go to color grade, either.

  • Sound very choppy and out of sync on videos. Fine when playing music

Whenever I try to play a video on iTunes I must use quicktime instead because the Audio makes it so unbearable. It becomes choppy and delayed by a few seconds. It almost pulses.
My audio is fine when I try to play music and fine on quicktime.

  • Yellow Cast to HVX200 Footage in FCP - but fine on NTSC Monitor

    Dear Folks:
I am shooting two cameras with an HVX200 and an HMC150 in a room where the only light source is daylight-bulbed Kinoflos. The lights are fixed, as it the set. Nothing changes. There are no windows.
I have two NTSC monitors, both set to camera bars.
I use manual white balance. I use a big white card (a foamcore board).
The first day, the image looked perfectly white balanced on the NTSC monitors. We ingested the footage through Final Cut Pro. It matched the look we saw on the NTSC monitors on several macs.
The second day, however, the image had a YELLOW cast to it when ingested via Log and Transfer.
Why would it look clean and white on the NTSC monitors and yellow on various macs?
    Thanks!

First off, are you saying there is a difference between Day One and Day Two...? or...
Just a difference between NTSC and mac display?
Are there any common values in the days that can be sampled and compared numerically? For example some thing "white" in day one is R=235, G=235, B=235 and on day two is R=235, G=235, B=190?
Two other things off the top of my head might be the white balance went away overnight (if you didn't balance again on the second day), or one of your kinos went "sour".
Not likely but you may be getting a subtractive dynamic contrast in the shadows?
Or, more likely, there is a white point difference between the NTSC monitors and the macs. Generally speaking, most macs set for broadcast-emulation sit around D65, while many, many ntsc monitors can range from D65 all the way up to about 9500, which is VERY blue, but your eye-brain adapts to that and then it becomes a VERY bright "white".... against which everything else will look yellow.

  • A/V out-of-sync issue for FCP captures

I've read many of the out-of-sync posts on this board, most of which seem to indicate that the problem is usually caused by either dropped frames, bad timecode breaks, edit errors, or disunity between FCP capture and sequence settings, compared with audio sample rates for the underlying files.
My files, shot on my Panasonic AG-DVX100A in 24pa mode, result in perfect (except for the anamorphic screen size - see my next post!) Quicktime movie files, in perfect sync. It's only when I create clips from those files in FCP that the video and audio go out of sync. And the out-of-sync drifts; that is, the further you go in the clip, the more out of sync the sound and the video gets.
My camera is always set to the 24pa mode, which, by default, records only in the non-drop-frame mode, regardless of any other camera settings I may have selected. The audio settings in my camera (and in the resulting underlying QT files that are created when I capture in FCP) are 16-bit integer and 48.000 khz, as they are in both my FCP sequence presets and capture presets, so I don't think it's an issue of conflicting sample rates. My device control presets are for Firewire NTSC NDF (non dropped frame).
Given the above information, does anyone have any idea what else I might be doing wrong? I've already shot hundreds of hours of footage last year that worked fine. I don't know what I changed to cause this out-of-sync problem now, but I'm going bald tearing out my hair trying to figure it out.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Out of sync Capture

I have a brand new imac, just captured from a panasonic digital camcorder. Footage is out of sync. Error messages say the timeline broke. " Make sure audio sample rate on your capture preset matches sample rate of your tape."
I'm a novice, so what does all this mean. How should my camera be set. Should it be at 16 bit or 12 for audio. Main question: Where do I find capture preset on computer. I saw in on the capture project screen, but have no idea what to change it to. It was on 48 something...had choices of 32. How do I get my footage in sync.
Should I have camera set to 4:3 ratio or 16:9, if I want to edit on computer, burn to dvd and play on tv's.

Let's start with the basic setup -
Set your camera for 4:3 video and *16 bit* audio.
Shoot some footage on a *new tape*. 5-10 minutes is all you need for this test.
In FCE, select the DV-NTSC Easy Setup in FCE preferences.
Capture the footage you just shot. Make sure you don't capture from the very very beginning of the tape - start at least 10 sec from the beginning of the tape (it's called 'pre-roll').
Place the captured clip in a *NEW sequence* in the timeline. Play it. How's the audio/video sync?

  • HDV capture audio out of sync

I'm having some problems with some captured HDV footage. After a while, the video footage gets out of sync with the audio.
Premiere reports some error in the mpeg stream and inserted some red frames when importing the avi. After these red frames, the audio sync problems show up. Is there any way to fix the avi file? I can't recapture the tapes as they are not around anymore. It might have been a tape problem that caused the error in the first place.
What programs are recommended for fixing avi?

I have had the same problem recently and I definitely chase it back to the HDV tapes (I recaptured and at the same spot the problem occured).  I had to carefully cut the bad frames and then resync the audio.  I am wondering if Sony had a bad batch of tape.  I have another batch now an will be conducting some tests to see if it is tape or cameras (had it happen on two different cameras in a two camera shoot--what an editing nightmare!  Fortunately I always had one good track to cover and be able to resyc the other one.
Thank you Harm and Ann for alerting us the HDVsplit

  • Audio is out of sync after capture.

I'm attempting an firewire capture from a DV source. When I'm logging clips and previewing them, the sound is fine, but when I view them after capture the audio is out of sync. I think I'm having timecode issues, is there any way around this?

I tried watching them in the timeline and viewer, all out of sync. No external monitor. I did get a message once about dropped frames and something else, it said I might have these issues, but it didn't tell me to change settings, just told me it was gonna happen, lol. So, I don't know where to start to fix it.

  • AJA audio on HD capture crackles and out of sync

    AJA Kona LHe card
    DV capture is fine.
Tried to capture HD and audio has crackle and worse- way out of sync.
I checked settings again and again- I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. I tried the latest drivers and the previous versions.
I can't get this card to capture HD sync audio.
It's a 1080i signal component- audio is coming off a mixer.
This set-up works for DV capture and never fell out of sync with a Decklink- so I know it's correct.
any suggestions? Before I call AJA.

    NOpe. Call AJA.
I have the Kona LH and Kona 3 and have not experienced this issue.

  • Audio And Video out of sync in Final Cut, but not in quicktime

I heave searched the forums to no end to find the solution to this issue, unfortunatley, I have not solved the problem.
I am using Final Cut 4.5 on a G4 running OSX 10.3.4. This system has worked perfectly for years with no problems. Neither the system, hardware, or software has ever been changed on this machine. Suddenly last week, despite perfect sync while previewing the capture, the Audio and Video were of sync in Final Cut, but when checked in quicktime, there were no problems. That is how I eventually figured out this was a final cut problem.
By out of sync, I don't mean it is by a specific number of frames that can be adjusted and then everything is fine, the sync seems to drift so that if you edit the audio to be in sync in one part of the video, it won't be at the end. Also, it is out of sync from the first frame played, not a gradual drift.
This is definitely not an issue of frame rates or final cut settings as will be evident by the steps I took below to find the source of this problem.
This is what I did to attempt to fix the problem:
    - Check drives using disc utility and repair permissions
    - Remove Final Cut Preferences using Apple guidelines
    - Switch hard drives
    - Delete Final Cut and reinstall newer version of final cut (since the capture files played fine on Final Cut 5.1 on another machine)
    - reinstall entire OSX 10.3.9, wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Final Cut 5.1
    - switch ram slots, and even replace ram with different sticks from another G4 machine
None of these solutions worked. Is there some hardware problem with my G4 that is suddenly causing Final Cut to play audio and video out of sync?
Hope you can help, otherwise this otherwise great G4 is going in the dumpster!
    Thanks

For what it's worth, I'm having what looks to be the same problem. Driving me insane. Here's what's going on-
    Editing in FCP 6.0.2
QT was just updated to 7.3.1 the other day (hmm)
On an MacBookPro machine, OS 10.5.1
Software updater says everything's up to date of course.
    DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal (footage was shot at 24PA on a DVX100b)
In Quicktime, the file previews fine, everything's in sync, everyone's happy. In FCP, the video and audio are wildly out of sync. I did a test inside of quicktime and sliced out a small portion of the media clip and did a "save as" and this small slice played in sync in FCP. However, this did not work for the entire clip. Clip is weighing in at 5.58GB for a 32 minute run.
I'm trying to multicam 2 tapes together and manually syncing these up is proving to be difficult at best. When anyone gets any ideas/leads/patches, let us know.
