Captured DV tape doesn't show entire clip in FCP

I just imported a second MiniDV tape, but it only shows 23m in FCP while QT reports 61m and 16GB file. I have tried importing the clip from the finder, but it's still cut off. What's wrong?

Some details as to exactly where the clip is from and how you "imported" it together with info about your Easy Setup and sequence properties would help people make a guess.
Incidentally, a 61 minute DV tape should be no more than 13GB, so it looks as though there are a number of weird factors involved that we know nothing about.

Preview of file doesn't show entire photoshop doc

Hi,
When I add a layer to a photoshop file, flatten and save, the preview only shows the layer that I added, not the whole file. See info window below. It causes problems when I send it to other people, they think I haven't sent the correct file. How do I get that preview to update?

Preview doesn't show up in the capture window

When trying to capture, the video preview doesn't show up in the capture window, only the color bars. I am able to run my transport with the buttons and the key commands, so I know the Canon ZR500 is really communicating (easy setup: DV-NTSC), via firewire. My scratch disk is a G-Raid hooked up through the firwire 800 input. The crazy thing is, it worked only one time. I've wasted one whole day and this morning, restarting, rebooting, unplugging, different tapes, etc. Next step is takew my entire setup to the so-called Genius Bart and see if Apple's Geniuses know anything about Apple software. Frustrating as ****. I will never buy Apple again.

Careful about editorializing. There are lots & lots of Mac users who are successfully capturing from Canon camcorders. I am one of them, and have never had a problem. So there is something in your setup that needs to be uncovered, it's not FCE or Canon per se.
One observation, you have a small hard drive (100GB) and even though you appear to have 59GB free, that's actually not a lot of space. One hour of DV consumes about 13GB and during capture the Mac temporarily needs nearly 2x that space, which means your system is using the 'inner' cylinders of the hard drive, where performance slows down; this could explain your dropped frames problem. Can you move some stuff off your system HD onto your G-RAID (say, your iPhoto and iTunes libraries if you are using those apps, they often take a lot of disk space)?

Open the App Store app, go to the Featured pane, swipe to the bottom, tap the Apple ID and sign out. Tap again and sign in with the Apple ID of your choosing.

Capture a tape and separate clips

I am new to Final Cut Express 4 but I have had extensive experience with various Premier Elements, including PE7 as well as with WideStudio 10 & 11. Notwithstanding all that I cannot find out how to capture the DV tape from my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40E) so that each 'clip' is separated. In the other products above, once you have clicked to separate clips, (by time-codes) they were all captured and recorded as separate clips. In FCE I tried capturing with Batch Capture but that did not work. Can someone please help me as to what i need to do?

thanks for your suggestion. I did read Page 192 but was not very clear to me. Do I take it that first I have to capture the entire tape in one 'hit' and then segregate the tape into clips? With other programs I used, the 'capture' itself segregated and recorded each clip as it was recording/capturing the tape. The 'segregation' was based on each clip's time code. Is that not the case with FCE 4? Does that mean that I cannot 'capture' all my clips on a tape in one hit as i used to? Or have I misunderstood you response?

Log and Transfer won't capture entire clip...

Hi there,
I'm trying to log and capture clips in FCP7 from and HVX200.
For some reason it doesn't capture the entire clip...the end gets cut off. I can see it in the log and transfer window, but when I transfer the clips, they become truncated.
Has anyone ever had this problem?

Go into the Log and Transfer prefs...that little sprocket looking drop down menu. Choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck "REMOVE PULLDOWN."
Try again.

Have you copied your content over from your old computer and onto the new on ? If not, and you still have your old computer, then there a number of methods described on this page which you can use to copy your library over : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 . If you no longer have your old computer then have you got a backup of your content that you can copy onto the new computer and add into iTunes ?

When I capture from tape, express 4 now breaks my captured material into separate shots, an icon in the browser for each. Before it captured the whole clip till I hit escape, and created just one Icon. How to i get back the way it was.

What you describe is normal behavior for HDV capture using FCE.
DV captures as one clip or may split the clip if there are timecode breaks on the tape.
HDV always breaks clips at the shot changes using FCE.
HDV cameras can downconvert to DV even if HDV was used to record the footage so it's important to know what the camera outputs during FCE capture.
Maybe this is why you have had mixed results with the differing capture windows?

Especially the clip whose audio is 'covering' another... the timeline doesn't show it's audio as extending, and it would appear only that the clip for which audio has been shortened, is still there, or at "0"... what gives? If you uncollapse the audio, or detach it, you do, once again, see the split audio.

Capture MiniDV tape as one clip

I am doing my first MiniDV tape capture. I rewound the tape, clicked play and Capture Now. When the tape was done, it was divided up into clips. I don't want this. How do I import it as one clip? (it broke it up into 5 clips of varying length) this is a friends home video.

If you are working with DV/NTSC or DV/PAL material, Final Cut Pro does not automatically segment the capture (unless there are time code breaks).
If you have HDV footage, I believe there is a check box somewhere in the capture settings to turn off the automatic clip generation.

iTunes 11 picked up on my entire extensive movie, tv show and music collection flawlessly, but importing a new movie into iTunes 11, it shows up in the list view, in the get info window the assigned artwork shows up, but the movie doesn't show up in the non-list (with artwork) view.
The media collection is on an external drive. And on my older Snow Leopard machine, the newly imported movie also shows up (with artwork) as it should.
Just not in iTunes 11 non-list )main movie) view.
Any ideas on this?

Wait - I meant to say that on the older machine the newly imported move shows up correctly using Front Row, not in iTunes.
Besides, i just noticed that my my hardware profile is not up to date - I am referring to an iMac running MountainLion 10.8.2

Video clip doesn't show

When I connect my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 camera to iphoto 2009, the video doesn't show to be downloaded. I'm wondering if there is any thing that can be done to make the video show to allow me to download.

Don't shoot AVCHD Lite. If you are going to shoot that then you'll need to use iMovie to edit and process it.

Import doesn't make a clip (iMovie HD, Canon ZR10, macbookpro) Video Newbie

Hi All
I've never done video before and have a Canon ZR10 and I think iMovie HD (about says 6.0.3 (267.2)).
The problem is that when I import from the camera it doesn't create the clip.
iMovie is able to control the camera fine. The import button works, but no clip shows up.
I also get the same results on a imac with iMove 3.x
Any ideas?

Capturing from tape to computer NO WORKY :(

We all know and hate this error:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
I did a search on the discussions and tried the following with no success:
-changing to FireWire NTSC Basic
-going to Easy Setup and choosing NTSC
-changing to non-controllable device
Problem happens on a MacBook Pro and PowerPC PowerMac - both have Tiger (10.4.latest). Two different cameras (Canon XL-2 & Sony DCR-TRV1). Two different tapes, and two different FireWire Cables.
I'm driving home to try on my iMac with 10.5 --- I know it should work there.
Please help.

Actually Michael's comment does help in this case and this could be the one in a million time that reusing tape has come back to bite you. You're using mini dv tape which is at most, 5 bucks so there is no excuse to reuse a tape. It's not a dbeta or hdcam or hdcam sr or d5 tape; it's cheap!
Reusing a tape, especially a minidv tape makes as much sense as blacking the entire tape.
I worked on a show for ten years that broadcasts worldwide and they never ever ever reused a tape. Dirty program, clean program, camera iso's and vhs iso backups so say around 20 tapes. PER SHOW and more loads if the show went long. Never reused a tape, not even a vhs or minidv that had been used for roll in elements.
As you've got a Canon camera, you may also check your configuration as far as you firewire devices are concerned. If I were a betting person, I'd say this tape will not work with your iMac either.
