Capturing 16x9 format

Hello,
I shot a film on ntsc, format 16x9, but when I capture the image looks squeezed. What settings do I need when capturing the video footage to make sure I'm not disforming the image?
thank you:)

choose the appropriate Anamorphic capture setting
eg if this is DV then choose *DV NTSC Anamorphic*

  • Capturing 16X9 video

I have a professor at the University where I work who brought me several miniDV tapes with video shot in 16X9 Widescreen. This is a first for me, as I have never captured 16X9 footage. I remember when I used Adobe Premiere in the past you would be given a choice to select 16X9 or 4X3 in the inital setup menu. I can not find anything like this in Final Cut. I started to capture the footage and the video appeared "smushed" in the 4X3 preview and source monitors. A co-worker suggested Final Cut would automatically resize the footage when it is exported.
My question is, do I need to do anything to set up Final Cut correctly for capturing 16X9 footage before I begin? Also, I am assumming that when I export to Compressor, if I am using 16X9 footage I would select the "DVD Best Encode 120mins 16X9 option........or will this crop the footage if I select it? I am using Final Cut Studio 1, Final Cut Pro version 5, (haven't upgraded to new version yet) on a Power Mac G5. Can anyone tell me how to capture and export 16X9 footage correctly, maintaining the original aspect ratio?
Thank you so much for the help.

Final Cut WILL NOT RESIZE ANAMORPHIC VIDEO!
anamorphic video is a 16:9 image "squished" and placed in a 4:3 frame size. you can edit the footage in an anamorphic sequence but when you export the sequence it is still 4:3. it depends on if you want to view it full frame on a wide screen tv or if you want to view it on a standard TV. If you are going to view it on a standard 4:3 tv then I suggest you edit the sequence in the standard NTSC 4:3 frame size. this will give your 16:9 footage a "letterbox" look when viewed on a 4:3 TV. if you are going to be viewing your footage on a widescreen tv then edit the sequence anamorphic. you will still need to adjust the exported quicktime movie to the frame size you wish. dealing with anamorphic video can be a real pain, since you need to know how it will be viewed. good luck.

  • PSE 8 - Why is there not a slide show in 16x9 format?

Warum gibt es nicht eine Diashow im 16x9 Format?
It would be good if the PSE 8 with a new format 16x9 would make an update!

Hello, when a slide show with PSE (slideshow) in the 16:9 format is created, then the zoom can not be used. After transmission to the PRE proposed format is not mandatory. The TV then displays a border around the Image.
Again, a 16:9 aspect ratio in the tool slideshow in PSE with zoom 16:9 would be a very large value for PSE+PRE! Then I would not have to use a competing product.
    I still have hope!!

  • Preserving 16x9 format when exporting jpg

Hi. I am exporting from FCE, still images from a sequence using File/Export/Quicktime conversion and still image or image sequence settings. The project is from HDV and is in widescreen but the exported jpg images are 'tall and thin', indicating it has somehow converted from 16x9. I cannot find any reference to this in the FCE manual. Can you help? (I am UK based, using PAL and capturing the HDV footage using Easy Setup setting HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50) - Thanks, Max

Why are you exporting image sequences? What are you trying to do? HDV 1080 material is normally squeezed for compression from 1920 to 1440. That's the way the HDV 1080 format is designed so that's what you get when you export an image sequence. If you're going back to video this is the best way to leave your material as it's the least manipulated that way. If you're doing something else then you have to readjust the images.

  • New to 16x9 format, how get best quality when using standard dv footage?

If I am capturing standard NTSC dv footage, and adding standard dimension digital photos, what capture and sequence settings should I use to get best looking 16x9 output? I know I can export as 16x9 and burn a 16x9 DVD in DVDSP, but I was thinking I should capture and edit that way as well to get best quality.
Thus far, I've been editing everything as 4x3 and assuming the tv's these will be shown on will compensate, which is generally true. I would like, however, to give my clients the option of which output option is best for them.

So, a client would have to give me 16x9 raw footage for me to produce a true 16x9 DVD?
    Yes.
I know I can't produce HD DVDs, at least not cost effectively, and most people don't have players anyway.
Right. None of us can. The movies from the store or Netflix aren't HD. HD has no current relevance in DVD production (other than as acquisition formats).
I do want their footage to look as good as
possible on those large screen tvs.
If you produce a good DVD it will look good. All the other DVDs that are 4:3 are just that - 4:3. Same with 4:3 television. If they were produced well they should look great on any screen.
    1. I'm starting with DV NTSC raw footage, a low-res
    codec.
    OK.
    2. I'm compressing to MPEG-2 to be playable on an
SD-DVD player, a further low res codec.
OK. But you really mean "to be playable on a DVD player".
    3. Regardless of what I do, it's going to be
    low-res.
Regardless of what you do, the resolution is limited by current DVD technology. That is, in the NTSC world, 720x480 whether it's 4:3 or 16:9.
Does MPEG-2 always look crappy on an HDTV? On a 72dpi SDTV, it looks acceptable. Is there a workaround for HDTV?
Whether or not it looks crappy is subjective. If Hollywood-produced DVDs and SD television look great on it, then it's possible to make it look great.
Your real limitations - the ones you have control over, are:
    - quality of camera, glass, and related equipment
    - quality of lighting, audio, camerawork, production in general
    - recording format (DV ain't the greatest).
    - editing format (hint: you don't have to edit in DV)
    - quality of editing / editor
    - quality of MPEG2 encoding
In your case I think the last one is the most relevant. If you aren't getting acceptable results you may need to learn more about MPEG2 and Compressor.
BTW 72dpi is a print term, it has absolutely no meaning in video.
Further question, if I'm doing a photo slideshow, not DV footage, can I leave it uncompressed or will it convert to MPEG-2 and stink regardless?
To make a DVD movie it needs to be MPEG-2. That's the technology we have. But it doesn't have to stink. The MPEG-2 you use is the same MPEG2 the studios use with movie releases. The technology is the same, the difference is that they have people who really really know how to use it well.
There is a way to make actual slideshows from JPEGs which play from a DVD or CD. I know little about this, but I suspect that the resolution is still limited to 720x480. Someone will correct me if that's wrong. But you don't have to put them through MPEG2 compression.
You may benefit from finding out what 16:9 really means. All it means is that the display is wider. That's all. There is no implication of a quality increase, in fact from DVD playback the 16:9 picture will always appear a little softer than SD if viewed on a widescreen device. That's just the way it is.

  • Capturing multiple formats

Hi. I have an American JVC BR-DV3000 deck that is multisystem (PAL and NTSC) connected to my British G5. I need to be editing from mini-DV tapes from both formats. Everything worked fine with NTSC tapes. I assumed when i put in a PAL tape I would just change the sequence preset and the capture preset to PAL in A/V settings, but changing those presets to PAL, and changing all presets to PAL, and every other configuration doesn't work. Device Control seems to work, but preview is disabled and capturing results in an instantaneous error. Please help!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have that deck. As Jerry said, look on the back and you'll see a PAL/NTSC switch. Set it and the deck will turn off, reboot, then come back on in the new format...

  • Long Capture unsupported format damaged file

Im capturing long videos and from time to time, when i hit the stop button for end the capture proccess, i dont get the window asking for the final filename. The main capture window stays still some time and then it shows itself as ready to capture again as if i putted the filename. The thing is the file is created, but when i try to import it it says damaged or unsupported format. Some other times (the most) this filename window does apperar and when i define the name and hit ok, i can see in Finder that the file that was beeing created generates a thumb, that de "corrupt" file doesnt ever get to generate because i think its not "closed", but i dont understand the inner proccess so its just a guess.
So the thing is, is there a way to fix this file? its 2hr capturing and its not the first time it happens, so id be very grateful if you can help me.
    Thanks in advance
    System: Macbook Pro i7 2.6ghz 16gb ram 512gb ssd OSX 10.8.3 w/updates
    Capture: Sharp HI8 camera > AVT-8710 > Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt > Premiere CS6 > JPEG Compression

Did you ever find a solution to this?  I'm having the same issue and really need to try and repair my files.  I captured 2 files each over 200 GB in HD 720p, jpg, mov file using an ultrastudio mini recorder via thunderbolt on a mac.  The capture went perfect until the end.  On one the box to name the file never appeared.  On the other I named the file.  But both cannot be opened by Adobe Premiere, Qucktime, VLC, or any other program I've tried.  The shorter test clips I did beforehand worked fine.  Any thoughts?  Did you get this figured out?

  • Changing Screen Capture Default Format

I'm trying to change the default format of the screen capture created by shift-command-4 from PDF to PNG. I set the string in com.apple.screencapture to png, but it doesn't seem to be "sticking". Any ideas?

Maybe I should specify what I'm looking for, sorry. In another experiment in customization, when I tried to rename my Trash, I found that the new name I put in the Property List wouldn't "stick" unless I executed "killall Dock" in the Terminal to restart the dock.
I'm trying to find out what I should restart to have my screencapture format change "stick". Unless maybe that is totally off track?!

  • Screen Capture default format in Tiger OS

    Dear Mac OS Fellows:
In Tiger OS, the default file format for screen capture is "PNG." I want to change it to "PDF"!
I found the command tips, never worked for me, on the net=>
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
    killall -HUP SystemUIServer
I tried those 2 commands. The default format is stil set to "PNG."
    Help please!
    Max NY

    Max--
The reason why I try to capture screens with "PDF"
export, is that I want to preserve the "vector"
    attribute of the type.
To no avail! After saving capture as a PDF, I zoom in
400% to check on the edge of the type. Disappointing
    enough! All become pixelated!
Hmm. This may not be possible. The way I understand it, the screen is a bitmap, rendered by the OS. So, yes you can get a PDF of the screen, but it's just a bitmap in a PDF. That would be the same for any kind of application's windows where the text was drawn on screen, like a dialog box.
The only standard tool I know of is the "Web Capture"
    in Acrobat Pro. v.7.
Well, if you're interested in web pages, you can always just use "Print," but instead of printing, save your web page to a PDF from the print dialog. But, since you're "printing," you may find the printout isn't exactly like the web page. Especially if they use a different style sheet for print media.
You can use this same trick with other applications, too, as long as they can print (and as long as they don't "rasterize," i.e., make bitmaps of, the type in their documents before they send them to the printer).
I've never heard of a tool that could do what you want with any window. I think one would have to intercept the commands going to the graphics system before they actually get rendered for the screen, and I'm not sure that's possible.

  • Screen Capture File Format

Does anyone know a way to change the default file format in the Mac OS screen capture utility to a different format other than PNG? Thanks.

    cbenham wrote:

There are two default screen capture mechanisms in Leopard:
The direct ⌘ shortcut, and the application, grab.
I presume you are referring to the ⌘ shortcuts since the default for grab is tiff
    ⌘-Shift-3 = Screen
    ⌘-Shift-4 = Selection
    ⌘-Shift-4 + Spacebar = Window
To change the format, in a terminal enter
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type image_format
    where "image_format" can be
    tiff
    jpg
    pdf
    and possibly others.
When using the terminal, you are on your own and if you are unfamiliar with it, be very careful.

  • Screen Capture (file format) used to be pdf

Is there a way to change the default file format for a screen capture. The file format in OS 10.3 used to capture as a PDF. Now the format is PNG. I know you can open the file in preview and resave it.
I just want to see if there is someway to change preferences or something so it will default as a pdf file.
    thanks

    Hi, amantia and costicladop —
    amantia, welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are various options to accomplish your objective.
OnyX 1.6.5 (a free utility) and Cocktail 3.6.5 ($14.95 shareware utility) offer the option to change graphic file format with a "single click" — in OnyX »» Appearance »» Screen Capture and Cocktail »» Interface »» Misc. »» Screenshot file format, respectively.
They're both just implementing Terminal commands — which provide another option.
bmp, gif, jpg, jpg-2000, pdf, photoshop, pict, png, sgi, tga, and tiff options are available in both utilities.
    Hope this helps . . .
    Regards,
    Dean
p.s.  costicladop — following your link engages an automatic download. (Duh.) Wanting to read something first, I went to http://www.arenasoftware.com/ — which forwards to http://www.digitalarena.co.nz/. The software page on that site only mentions three software products, none of which is shotChoice. Could you provide a descriptive link? Thanks!

  • Captured Captured Video Formats

I have some footage of an event that was captured from a Sony Handycam and a lot of other footage that was captured from a higher end HD camera.
When I play back the captured video from the higher end camera through Finder > QuickTime Player, it plays and sounds great in but once I import in the footage into final cut, the audio is "crackly" (that's my super tech term for audio not clear).
I double checked the sequence audio properties match the properties of the captured video (48mhz / 16 bit).
I'm sure this is a checkbox somewhere I'm missing.... any pointers?
    Thanks!

    Clip Settings:

    Vid Rate: 29.97
    Frame Size: 1440x1080
    Compressor: HDV 1080i
    Data Rate: 3.2 MB/sec
    Aud Rate: 48 KHz
    Aud Format: 16-Bit Integer
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
    Sequence Settings:
    Rate: 48 KHz
    Depth: 16bit
    Config: Channel Grouped
Think I may have found something here... here's the audio settings for a clip that plays just fine in the sequence:
    Audio: 2 Mono
    Vid Rate: 29.97
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPro
Data Rate: 3.6 MB / Sec
    Aud Rate: 48 KHz
    Aud Format: 16 Bit Integer
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
Lots of differences in the video and the only thing that jumps out at me is the data rate for the audio. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Design Capture free format Packages

Is there an option yet to allow capture of Packages in a free format style ??

Declarative gives Designer some more information that it can use in reporting, especially reports that show usages. But there aren't many of the supplied reports that use this information. Declarative format is also easier for those who aren't fluent in SQL or PL/SQL.

  • Screen capture image format

    hi there,
after i installed Adobe Acrobat, I got .pdf image when I use "commandshift3(4)" to capture the screen.
How can I set up it to get .jpg format image as I did before.

You can change it in the Terminal, but for those of us who like GUI's I've used Tinkertool to change this format.
Oh... I've just noticed Tinkertool says it only supports this function in 10.1 or 10.4 not 10.2 or 10.3. Even these other two only work under 10.4 apparently... so you'll have to go for the Terminal route. Type in one of the following to the Terminal and hit return:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tif
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type psd

  • Problem capturing DV format using Canon HV40

Although I can capture HDV, when I play a DV tape back. no video is captured, although Premier Elements 11.0 indicates that it is capturing video.  The HV40 automatically outputs DV when a DV tape is played back.  I have tried specifying capturing from a DV device, but then Elements tell me that there is no device control.  I tried specifying DV as the format, but that doesn't work either.  Any advise will be appreciated.  OS is Windows 8.

Yes.  HDV capture works fine.  DV capture does not work
What model of camcorder is your video coming from?
    Canon HV40
If you are getting DV from your camcorder, you must have it set to DV Lock. Is this your intention, or are you trying to capture high-def video?
The HV40 automatically outputs DV when a DV tape is played back.  It cannot upconvert DV to HDV.  Intention is to capture the DV as DV,
Have you ensured that you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements?
Don't have Quicktime installed as far as I know.  Will check.
Do you get different results if you use the free download HDV Split to capture your video?
I don't have a problem with HDV capture.  Have not tried HDV Split
