Capturing 1920/60i in CS3

Can it be done?  I have 1920x1080 footage coming from a Canon HV10.  CS3 doesn't seem to give me the option of capturing at 1920.  Plus, it doesn't seem to want to show the footage during capture, so I don't know there's a timecode failure until the tape is done (then I find out that it stopped capturing 40 minutes ago!).
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me,
Chad

  • Capture error premiere pro cs3

I've got an ongoing capture error in premiere pro cs3 (on Mac OSX).
At around the 9 minute mark of capturing, it stops and says 'Unknown recorder error'. The footage is still captured if I stop it straight away but lost if I leave it for a while. I'm using canon hv30 camera to capture dv footage (not hdv) and can't seem to solve it. Any suggestions?

Try a different capture utility.  VideoHelp.com will list plenty of free alternatives.  If they stumble as well, there ie likely something wrong with the tape at that spot.

  • Capturing a 60i tape in a 24p film?  How do I match it up?

We were logging tapes and found a 60i tape in our pile of 24p tapes.
Do I need to go back to the easy set-up and capture it in 60i? Or is there a way to capture it with the "advanced pulldown"?
After I capture it, how do I get the 60i to look like 24p?
    Thanks,
    GK

Best way I know of to make 60i look like 24P is Nattress film effects.
Don't recapture, just run Nattress on the shots you use. Best $99 bucks you'll spend...

  • Importing screen captures into Adobe Premiere CS3??

I’m using Camtasia to capture my mouse clicks on a website to use (sort of like a tutorial) in a video I’m working on, but when I import the Camtasia AVI file into Adobe it loses its sharpness and the font and graphics become unreadable. Any advice? Tips? Hints? I’m pulling my hair out over here!

This ARTICLE and its links might offer some useful tips.

  • Analogue Video Capture Not possible with CS3

Using the Premier Pro 1.5 Matrox RTX Xtreme Pro 100 Card, which gave so many problems with Field order in PAL. ( A true nightmare), having upgraded to CS3, I have no ability to injest analogue video. In Dual Core PC.
I had 4 track Audio on DV, and could not injest the 3rd and 4th tracks via firewire, so I had to injest using Premier Pro 1.5, via analogue. Then transfer the files into CS3.
I needed to injest all 4 audio tracks, but couldn't. I was stuck with stereo on Audios 1, and 2 only, in the SD Domain. I gather I may have been able to do that in HD.
But it was an SD shoot, combining other material from an XL2 Canon.

The Matrox Xtrem Pro has analog ports, which will not allow injesting with CS 3, they work with 1.5 This was a combined package with Premier Pro, and the Xtrem Pro 100 card. I dont see why I must get further hardware, when it worked with your earlier version of the edit software.
So with Hi 8 / SVHS material I have to injest using Premier Pro 1.5, which fortuantely I have, as I got the CS3 as an upgrade.
I have now picked up the increasing rare JVC Mini-DV/ SVHS combo which has firewire. So its possible injest anlooge material using that.
But why no CS3 drivers for the Xtrem Pro 100 card???

  • Capture in Premier Pro CS3...please help

OK...I am BRAND NEW at Premier and "video" all together.  I'm trying to Capture video footage using my Sony DCR-SX41 camcorder AND I've watched the Lynda.com video on how to "capture" footage.  The instructor says that I may have problems doing this (which I certainly do), if my camera isn't set to "VCR mode"...what the HECK is that.  I'm looking through every setting on my camera and I don't see a "VCR mode".  Can someone help?! THANKS!
    SIGNED..."TOTALLY DISCOURAGED"

The first question at the end of this link http://ppro.wikia.com/wiki/Troubleshooting includes links to software that will tell you the CODEC used for your file
If you don't have the correct CODEC installed, Premiere won't work... IF it will work at all with the files you have
When you get to the wiki link, go to the base of that "tree" and start reading... especially the tutorial section
Also... go to my notes page http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM and click the link about editing Compressed files
There may be other software that would work better with your camera

  • Premiere CS3 doesn't support Camcorder capturing and MPEG-2 on purpose? [very frustrated. Please Hel

My boss gave me a Tape camcorder to extract the videos and post them on Youtube. I've tried Video Edit Magic 4.4, Premiere CS3, and Pinnacle Studio to capture the video, Premiere CS3 is the only software that does not recognize the camcorder. So I'm forced to use Pinnacle Studio Quick Start (The software that came w/ the Camcorder) to exact the video and made them into MPEG-2. Once the MPEG-2 is on my PC, I tried to open it with Premiere CS3 for editing. Once again, Premiere doesn't support the .mpg exported by Pinnacle. I've been tinkering with this for 10 hours, but still not luck . Someone please help me!
PS. I wanted Pinnacle to Export AVI instead of MPEG-2, but the software is so crappy that the exported files would always be distorted.

    Alexander,
You basically have two options: edit in Pinnacle, or Export from Pinnacle as DV-AVI (remember, your material has already been heavily compressed to MPG-2), and edit in CS3, to Export to whatever you wish to upload to YouTube. Most people seem to use FLV, but they'll have to give you the exact specs., that they use.
That is the way it is, with cameras, that create MPG files. Maybe subtly hint that the boss needs a miniDV tape camera, as the files from his/her camera are really meant to be viewed, not edited.

  • CS3 - KWorld DVD Maker USB2.0 Capture Possible?

Just wanted to know if it's possible to capture in Premiere Pro CS3 through USB.  I have a Sony SLV-N700 VHS Video Cassette Recorder (remember those) and it is connected to my computer via RCA plugs to a KWorld DVD Maker USB2.0 Analog to Digital Converter, and out of this device to my PC via USB and Audio plugs.  Is this even possible to capture in PP or am I wasting my time trying.  I'm using Windows Vista and can capture through Windows Movie Maker and then just import those files into Premiere.
    Thanks!!!

As Harm notes, Capture is ONLY via FW. This ARTICLE will give you some tips.

  • Can Sony's HVR-M10U deck's playback of HDV 1080i 60i footage be captured?

Does anyone know definitively if Sony's HVR-M10U playback of HDV 1080i 60i footage can be captured in FCP?

    After a lot of research & trail/error I have successfully captured 1080i 60i footage into FCP 5 using Sony's HVR-M10U deck.

  • PPRO CS3 RS-422a device control?

    Hello everyone,
I'm attempting to capture within Premiere Pro CS3 from a Panasonic AJ-HD130DC DVCPRO HD deck.  The manual states that the deck is RS-422a compatible and we've been successfully capturing from this deck using machine control with our Velocity HD system for quite some time so I know it should work.
I've called adobe support, and after some time they simply told me to 'reinstall premiere'.  This seems ridiculous.
I'm on an HP xw8600 workstation using the single COM1 port on the motherboard directly connected to the Panasonic deck. I've gone through the 'device control' settings in premiere and set it as follows:
    Protocol - Panasonic RS-422
    Port - COM1
Time Source - LTC (only option)
    Time Base - 59.94/60fps
This configuration gets rid or the "Device Control Error: No Communications with VTR" warning, so I know it's doing something.  But it still doesn't control the deck.
I've looked into changing some of the settings on the COM1 port in Windows XP64 device manager, but I'm not sure of what it should be and left it default.
Any ideas, thoughts or experience with this would be greatly appreciated.  This is a rather popular broadcast DVCPRO HD deck and it seems that premiere MUST be capable of communicating with it... that's what the "PRO" stands for right?
         Thank you.

Since the computer's COM port is RS232, you'll need to convert that to RS422 as well as accommodate the connector genders at each end. The Addenda RS-2/3R cable does this in one neat package. See at www.addenda.com.

  • Intensity Pro HDMI capture problems

I am unable to capture 1920 nor 1440 - 1080 thru the HDMI input of my Intensity Pro card. I'm connecting a Sony HD cam thru HDMI to the Intensity Pro in on the Mac, and FCP doesn't recognize the card. Using mini HDV tapes. Any suggestions?

    Hello,
I might be jumping all over the map on this, but the HDMI signal is 1920 not 1440, that is the one
idea for using this capture method. You have settings in the Audio/visual preferences that have
some control in capture. Also after you go into Log and Capture you have more settings to deal
with. I will attempt to post screen grabs to better illustrate.
I originally had trouble learning all these settings. In fact I was later able to make a custom
setting to capture ProRes (reg.) not ProRes HG.
if you can post your work method, step by step one or more of the fine masters on this site might
be more of a help than me.
    Tom
PS I could not attach the screen grabs, if anyone can tell me how this is done on this site, please do.

  • Does CinemaTools replace Magic Bullet 60i - 24P conversion?

    Hello,
I've never used either of these apps, but I'm reading about the pros and cons of these formats. One book suggests that capturing in 60i, and having a tool like Magic Bullet on hand, gives a certain flexibility on the video-look/film-look question. Magic Bullet is, obviously, expensive and the conversion tool is available only as an After Effects plugin (from what I can tell). My initial reading of the current version of FCP is that CinemaTools can do this conversion. True?
    Thanks!

Cinema Tools doesn't add a film look to 60i media, it merely rearranges 3:2 pulldown-cadenced 60i media into 24fps media.

  • HVX-200 and P2 rant

It's really becoming a pain for me to work with Premiere and After Effects CS4 so I gotta vent a little.
I'm doing Post FX and Color Correction in After Effects. I edited the movie in Premiere CS4 (started a bit in CS3 but movied over).
Ok I shoot 24pa (with is basically 24 progressive frames captured though 60i). In CS 2,3 Premiere and After Effects both removed the extra frames automatically.
Now since Late last year, I have to remember 'interpret footage' and check the box in Premiere. OK so I can lasso a bunch of files at once and do it in one shot. But all the time I bring in new clips and sometime I forget to 'check the box'
Or worse, MEDIA BROWSER makes searching through P2 clips a breeze. Hell I can even pick in and out's with dragging the clip in. Except, I have to remember to 'Interpret footage' for each one I pull in.
Ok I'm whining..but it gets worse!!!
There's that great 'replace with After Effects' feature. Being able to fix a shot in AE makes editing so much easier for me.
Except you have to do the 'INTERPRET FOOTAGE' DANCE AGAIN!!!!!!! Even if you did it in Premiere already. And this time it's not so easy, more clicks. But I'm, only doing one or two shots at a time in Premiere so it's not that annoying.
So the cut's done (locked), let's finish the color correction in AE where I have much more powerful tools available and 32 bit float.
Before I knew what I'm about to tell you I had 45 shots in a 10 minute reel as separate AE files.
WTF When I 'import Premiere pro project' in AE. Every single AE file in the project is MISSING. I have to manually tell it where each file is located.
That was 8 months ago. I still use AE to finish almost everything I do but I'm disappointed in Premiere. I'm actually thick enough to hope 4.1 gets something right, I'm afraid there to worried about RED.
    Rant's over for now.

First and foremost, watch this tutorial:
    P2 Workflow Tutorial
    1. They stay the same size. All that happens is that a quicktime wrapper is wrapped around them, and audio and video are combined. No loss is quality occurs.
    2. A SATA RAID will do you fine, but honestly I have been editing this and Varicam footage using 2 G-Raid firewire 800 drives. You need at least a firewire 800 drive, but I'd recommend a SATA Raid. Sonnet, Weibetech, Firmtek and Burly boxes...all work well.
    3. Copy the P2 cards to field drives. Bring them in and transfer to firewire drives. These drives are your TAPE MASTERS. Do not erase these, do not lose these. Store these as your would field masters. I myself use internal SATA drives in a single firewire case that I swap out the drives. Cheaper than multiple enclosed drives. From there you import to your Media drives...your SATA Raid.
    4. No need to offline. DVCPRO HD really doesn't take up that much space...roughly twice what DV takes. Oh...you are going 1080 24p. That takes 42.12 GB/hour DV takes about 13GB/hour.
    5. Editing at full resolution is fine and easy. But you will not be able to get away with firewire 400 drives. As I said, FW800 or greater. 1080i might require more, thus the need for the SATA Raid.
I believe that you need at least a Dua 1Ghz machine for DVCPRO HD, and you have that...and you have enough RAM...so you are good. The only choking point you will have is render times. Especially when compressing for DVD. 90 min show took me 14 hours...oof.
And read my Blog about working with the HVX...click on Underdog to get there.

  • Best Preset to in CS5 for AVCHD

I am experimenting with one of the newer Canon Vixia AVCHD cameras that is capable of shooting 1920 X 1080 video at 24 MB/sec.  I believe that the resultant MTS files are natively captured in 60i format.  I want to make a demo reel for a client for a product shoot using this camera to show the AVCHD quality and clairty. It seems natual that if I select the 1080P preset for this codec in CS5, I would be discarding half of the vertical resoluiton if the native format of the video is 60i as would be case when shooting SD video with a native format of 29.97 frames/sec. which reduces resolution. My guess is that the 60i is a field rate and not a frame rate.
The preset for either 1080P or 1080i are both set for a pixel ratio of square or 1, as opposed to retangular or .9, as with NTSC DV.  It would appear that with a pixel aspect ratio of square when viewing on a 16:9 widescreen format monitor, this would produce an incorrect picture.
Could I get some clarication/confirmation regarding the two questions above?  This would be the first time I have used this format of HD video and I want to be certain that what I produce is both true to standard and fully optimized with the native video that I for the demo real.
I will likely produce this video to be viewed as a mp4 file only rather than incorporatin it into a DVD.
Thanks indeed in advance for this assistance.

    Ann,
Thanks for the info regarding BD.
This project, like many I have been asked to work on in the past will be primarily be presented in DVD format and for that I will likely use Adobe Link to Encore to automate the process of conversion as you mentioned.  I have also been asked to make available a limited number of playable HD files of the project output which could be played on media hubs for home entertainment systems that are becoming so popular today.  These files are basically kept on an NAS (Network Addressable Storage) which stores the video content and generally contains a streaming hub to distribute video to HD sets within the house or residence for viewing HD content.
In experimenting with the Blue Ray output preset in CS5 in an effort to use this format for those users who wish to stream this content, the H264 codec produces an output file with an M4V file extension which neither Power DVD would play/recognize.  The streaming hub I use to test these outputs before distributing them to clients would not play it either.  This is the first time that I have attempted to use the Blue Ray H264 file output as a standalone playable file without burning a BR disk.  I was wondering if you are aware of a means of generating an MP4 compatible file output that can be played avoiding the M4V file extension.  Can you offer any guidance to me for this objective?
Aside from attempting to generate a stand-alone playable BR file above, I noticed that when using any of the HDTV presets, there seem to be a noticeable quality improvement when I changed the video frame rate from 29.97 to 30 fps in the video properties in the export media output settings.  I noticed this on my PC monitor only and there was a distinct improvement but this may not apply with the actual file output.  Can you shed any light on why this would be so noticeable and if maybe I should use 30 fps for the output file setting as opposed to 29.97?
Again, much thanks for your support and time to offer any additional input.

  • HD Strobe Of Death

    Hey Yeah!
I am having the same problem I have been reading about on here allot, with my HD footage. The Dreaded Strobe! Everything I have read I have tried but nothing seems to work. I will Give you all the info On my Capture, and Camera and system:
    Shot 1080i 24p, On A Sony HVR-V1U
    Captured using 1080i60
Vid rat in the sequence is 29.97
    Editing on FCPS2
Some of the footage in the time line looks ok some looks very strobed/jerky,
Any Speed changes definitely look bad, as do most clips with transitions on them. I Cannot seem to figure this out. It looks even worse when I send it to DVD through compressor I have tried top, and bottom field dominance to only different bad results.
I am Seriously getting baffled and have wasted way to much time researching the boards trying to figure this out. Anyone?

You have a mismatch in your settings that's causing your issue.
You say that you shot at 24p, captured at 60i. It appears that you need to remove the pulldown and edit in a 24p sequence. I wish I could tell you how to do that but I don't shoot that way so I have no need to do that. But maybe now you can be directed in your search.
