Capturing 23.97 HD cam

I am just starting on a feature that was shot on HD Cam 23.98fps. I am trying to capture audio and video at 23.98. I am using a Sony J-H3 connected via firewire 400. This deck down converts HD-SD on the fly.
This deck requires that you set the frame rate. When I set it to 23.98 I get audio and no video. (FCP capture window says video preview disabled). If I change the deck setting to 29.97 I get video and no audio (in FCP or on the deck) With the deck set to 24 I get audio and no video and with the deck set to 23 pull down I get video and digitally distorted audio.
All I need is SD media with the correct aspect ratio and the corresponding audio. This deck down converts on the fly.
I am on a G5 dual 2.7 running final cut 5.
any ideas?
Thanks
Rick

Sort of sounds like a problem with the deck itself... FW wierdness for sure. I do much the same with a client using that same machine (24p 1080, captured using the SD downconversion, but I capture via SDI.. and it works flawlessly with my Kona 2.. might need to do things this way. Wouldn't take anything but an IO, to do it or an inexpensive SDI card from AJA, decklink or Aurora... Yeah, not what you want to hear, but I really think the deck sounds like it needs some help.

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

    I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

    Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
    and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

  • Final Cut Express capturing 48 percent behind camera.

    When I go to capture with my HD camera it tells me that it is 48 percent behind the came and to use the camera for preview. Why is it doing this? When it finishes it makes sub clips, some of them have only 2 seconds of video while others have like 5 minutes. I have never had this problem before with the camera I own.

    NO I never stopped the camera once.
    When I say stopping the camera, I'm referring to the time you recorded the footage. During recording each time the record/record pause button is pushed on the camera that's a shot change/break. These shot changes/breaks are broken up during capture of HDV.
    Are we on the same page here?
    Otherwise I can only suggest that you double check the currently set Project and Sequence settings match the incoming footage from the camera in all details.

  • Capture from digital video camera

    I am so new to this. My computer runs Windows XP Pro.
    I am a baseball hitting instructor that uses a digital camera to record swings for training. For the past 18 months I have used video capturing software called RightViewPro that allows my clients to view thier swing while with me only. But now I want to send thier video clips via email or post them Online for customer viewing. RightViewPro does not allow that unless my customers order the $250.00 software as well.
    Frame by frame viewing capability is a must. I just downloaded the free version of quicktime 7.6.2.
    What must I do when I plug in my USB cord to my laptop? When connecting the USB cable from my camera to my laptop I get a window that gives access to Windows Movie Maker, Nero, and "Take no Action".
    I thought after downloading quicktime I would get a command or prompt to open and use "quicktime" as well.
    So I clicked on "take no action" and then openned the quicktime link from my desktop. I can not find where to capture video in the quicktime program??
    Do I need to purchase and download Quicktime Pro. to capture video from my camera to my computer?
    Thank you for taking the time to read this and help me.
    James

    Sorry, but QuickTime for Windows cannot capture directly from a camcorder. You'll need to use other software. Did your camera not come with capture/transfer software?

    i am planing to buy license of premier pro.I wan to capture picture from my camera .which card  i want to install ??

    If you're asking about Live Capture, where you record the camera feed direct to hard disk, then you need a Firewire interface or one of the (few) supported HDMI/SDI cards such as the AJA Kona, Matrox MX02 or BlackMagic Intensity Pro - however those have very specific motherboard requirements so you need to research them carefully before buying anything.
    For an intro to Live Capture I suggest you read the manual: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Capturing and digitizing footage

    Hi G-Man,
    It's probably something in the Preferences folder; Users/herusername/Library/Preferences. Start by removing com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist and trying again. If that doesn't do it drag the entire Preference folder to the desktop, log out and back in. Launch it again and if it works you can either reset preferences for all System Preferences and apps or drag the preferences files a group at a time back to the new Preference folder in Library and test Image Capture each time. That way you can narrow it down to the one offending preference file.

  • I cannot get CS6 to recognize my Sony DCR-TRV340 camera for capturing video from that camera.  CS6 c

    I cannot get CS6 to recognize my Sony DCR-TRV340 camera for capturing video from that camera.  The CS6 capture box keeps putting up a message that capture device is off line.  The Sony DCR-TRV340 camera is not listed in the CS6 Device Type  list in the CS6 DV/HDV device control settings box of Sony cameras.  I've downloaded what I think are the correct drivers for the TRV340, and when I plug the camera into the computer, the computer shows it listed in the devices and printers box, but CS6 will not recognize it.  Do I need to install these drivers into a specific folder in the CS6 program?  If so, where do I find these drivers in the windows 7 professional operating system, and into which CS6 file folder would I copy them to?

    Most camera's are not listed in Device controle, set it to Sony and generic. Yours is very old its a Digital 8 camera (I still got a TRV210). Johns second link wont work with your camera.
    You do not need to download drivers nor do you need to install anything. Most likely its the Legacy driver.

  • Error retrieving newly captured image from a camera.

    Hello Everyone,
    I am developing a user<->digital camera interaction application and I have a
    problem with accessing newly captured picture. The thing is I am trying to save
    the picture directly to the hard disk(this is possible with the camera I am using).
    So normally, as stated in the camera PTP specification, the process can be described
    in the following steps:
    1). PTP command 'capture' - is send successfully to the camera( the camera captures).
    2). Event 'RequestObjectTransfer' of ObjectHandle 0x12345678 - is received from the
    camera and processed by my application.
    3). GetObjectInfo (of ObjectHandle (0x12345678) ) command should be send to the camera.
    4). ObjectInfo - received from the camera.
    5). GetObject (of ObjectHandle (0x12345678) command send to camera.
    6). Object of ObjectHandle (0x12345678) received from the camera.
    7). Event TransferReady.
    Everything works fine until I try to ask for the object's info:
    - (CFDictionaryRef*) copyObjectPropertyDictionary
    OSErr err;
    ICACopyObjectPropertyDictionaryPB pb = {};
    NSDictionary* dict;
    pb.theDict = (CFDictionaryRef *)&dict;
    pb.object = 0x12345678;
    err = ICACopyObjectPropertyDictionary(&pb, NULL); //(**)
    if (noErr != err)
    NSLog(@"Error retrieving object info!");
    else
    return dict; // CFDictionaryRef *
    return NULL;
    The call (**) in the code above results in "err == -9905(kICAInvalidObjectErr)", so can
    anybody tell me where my mistake is because there is obviously one (btw I
    wrote the same application for Windows and the id 0x12345678 is recognized there.)

    It is an OS X application, the GUI is already done(not all of the controlls are functional,
    there are really a lot of them as the camera tend to be 'semi-professional' == 'a lot of
    settings'). Actually, what my application can do at this point is read/write settings
    from/to the camera, can 'sense' some event notifications, can capture image when the
    camera is on external mode(no memory card) and the images are processed to the
    'Current User'/Pitures folder and finally can look pretty sexy
    The method that gave me headaches for a week or so was the common ICADownloaFile
    it was not recognized by this particular camera as was not the 'copyObjectPropertyDictionary'
    posted above. Instead I wrote two PTPPassThrough methods which are now accepted by the
    Cam.

    Hey,
    I recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista and since then i have not been able to capture audio with the camera assistant software.
    I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing the program, changing the audio settings, running in compatibility mode, i have practically exhausted everything i can think of.
    Can anybody help at all?

    (if any other info is required then please ask me)

    Hi
    You mean you are not able to record the audio using the internal microphone.
    Is it right?
    In your case I would recommend checking the audio device settings inside the camsoftware.
    In settings -> audio tab (last tab) you will find the necessary settings.
    The audio device field should contain the microphone (2 Realtek high definition device) and the audio volume option should be set to max (to right).

  • Capture One vs Adobe Camera Raw processing - what is better?

    Hi,
    I regularly shoot on a P45 back and Hassleblad camera. I shoot using Capture One software. It is much more convenient for me to process the files in Photoshop's Raw convertor than Capture One but I'm always a little worried that maybe it lacks the quality? I've not noticed any quality dip but most high end digital camera outlets process on Capture One.
    Are their any significant differences if I process in Photoshop rather than Capture One? Is the quality the same?
    One further detail: my images are heavily worked in Photoshop so very small colour variations are probably going to be negligible for my way of working.
    Many thanks,
    Mr Hairdo.

    While I certainly agree that skill of the operator is the largest factor, I think it is a fair question because the results very dramatically.
    Attached are screen shots from a very weak shot (go ahead and blast it) that was over exposed.  I dropped the exposure by one stop in Aperture, ACR 5.3 and Capture One Pro 4.8 and did some high light recovery in each.  You can see how varied the responses are with the image and histiogram.  These are all at 100% and shot with a Nikon D3.  If anyone can offer a clearer understanding of why the results are so varied that would be very helpful.
    Thanks,

  • Unable to capture from Sony HDFX1 camera

    Built a new PC and utilized a top end ATI Radeon dual video card. Running Vista Ultra OS(hmmmm), plenty ram, processor, etc.
    PC does not see my camera when I plug in for capture. Do I need a special codec or 1394 HD drivers available for HD capture from ATI or from Adobe perhaps?
    Frustrated

    If the Vista install was a standard installation, Vista should recognize the camera automatically and install the correct drivers. Nothing you need to do. Make sure that you connect the firewire cable first between the camera and the on-board firewire connector. Do not try to connect it to the ATI card. Once the cable is connected, turn on the power on the camera and set it to VCR. Vista will then install the necessary drivers automatically and if they have been installed previously, show the autoplay box. Make sure that the menu in the camera is correctly setup to use the iLink connection and the format you shot in, so either DV or HDV. Consult the Sony manual for that. If the does not work, try a different cable first.

  • Can't capture vid - Canon XL cam FW 400 to FW 800 HD - Apple gurus stumped

    Am I REALLY the ONLY person out there using a Canon XL 1 and/or 2, an external hard drive with firewire 800 ports and a G5 and/or Mac Book Pro and working with FCP?!!!!
    I made a special trip from Flagstaff AZ to the Apple Store at the Biltmore in PHX, just to stump the Apple genuises with this problem. They asked that I post this on the Apple site's discussion forum.
    The verdict was: There seems to be a problem capturing video in FCP ("Unable to initialize video deck" and FCP freezes up) when going from the Canon, via firewire 400 4 pin to 6 pin and saving to an external hard drive via firewire 800. The 400 cable is good, as it captures fine to a drive using a 400 cable. It's just the 400 port on newer, 800 capable hard drives, is limited to one. We tried all different ways of configuring, going from camera to HD thru the Mac, and going from camera directly into the external HD, plugging into the 400 port, and then into the Mac from the HD thru the 800 ports.
    The only thing that we didn't try, because it's a rare cable (the Apple store hasn't carried one in over three months), is a 4 pin to 9 pin FW 800 cable.
    What am I doing in real life to still keep making money? I capture to my old external HD that has 2 FW 400 ports, then dump the footage to my new HDs with FW 800 ports to work on the project. Time consuming.
    Again, all versions of FCP and QuickTime software are up to date. We also used one of their G5s. Also, the problem occurs with both my LaCie Rugged HD and my Western Digital My Book, both purchased from the Apple store. The guru at the store kept referring to a bridge issue???
    Thanks.

    Here's my standard "so you are using a Canon camcorder to capture and it isn't working" routine:
    Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
    -you should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
    -Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Here's how:
    Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
    Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
    Reboot
    Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct and it still won't capture correctly, you are most likely a victim of the dread 'Canon firewire bus incompatibility problem'. Simply stated: Canon cameras do not play well with other devices on the same firewire bus. And, since all the firewire ports on a Mac connect to one bus - well - you get the picture.
    The most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. Since you have one and it isn't working, perhaps you have a more fundamental problem. Beyond replacing your tape playback device, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 34) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    - shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    - connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    - start the camera then the computer
    - capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    - shut down the camera and computer
    - disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    - start hard drive(s) and computer
    - move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    - edit
    If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    - copy the file back to the internal drive
    - shut everything down
    - disconnect the external drive(s)
    - connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    - start the camera then the computer
    - play the file.
    One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
    All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
    There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.

  • Can't capture video using iSight camera in QuickTime 7.4 (92)

    OK, I see that there are plenty of "bugs" with Quicktime Version 7.4 (92), but I don't see the problem I am having, posted anywhere. Here goes...
    I cannot capture video using my [Firewire] iSight camera on my CoreDuo MacMini. I definitely used to be able to do this. When I go to File>New Movie Recording, I get a back/blank Movie Recording window and that's it. I click on the Red/Record button and nothing happens. The timer doesn't even advance. Just sits there. When I try to stop the recording, I get the following message:
    *"Recording failed because no data was received.*
    *Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing."*
    I can still capture audio, although had some problems and had to "downgrade" to version 7.3.x and subsequently reinstalled 7.4. Now the audio works but still no video.
    A few things:
    1. YES, the iSight camera works - I can use it in iMovie, iChat, Photobooth, etc. - for both video and audio.
    2. As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video.
    3. I re-installed Version 7.4 and the audio problems cleared up, but again, still unable to capture video.
    3. All software updates installed.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks!

    "As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video."
    See QuickTimeKirk’s posting in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1357579&tstart=0
    Try the following:
    Trash com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    It's located in your account:
    HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    Delete the file, restart (a new .plist will be created) and quicktime hopefully will work again w/o doing an Archive & Install.
    +If you want to do an A&I:+
    Do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
    IMPORTANT: Maker sure you select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I?

    Just trying to capture hi 8 tapes using a sony digital 8 dcr-trv355e pal into quicktime;
    great clear video but  audio becomes out of sync like a bad kungfu movie,
    contacted apple they tried to help, but they dont really understand issue
    there are lots of people out there that are trying to digitise old analog video;
    I have fcpx and imovie they both play the old video via  the digital 8 camera but cannot capture;
    that is why using quicktime; thanks!!

    Yes i think its something to do ith the fact its a wmv file, when i use mpeg footage it exports fine.
    basically, no matter how long the video, the video is out of sync...its weird
    i've decided the best thing to do is leave quicktime and export using windows media instead, that seems to give me a better looking picture witha small file size anyway
    thanks for your help though!
