Capturing 24p from Canon xl2 help please

Hi everyone, just looking for some help here. I should have known better abotu all this 24p stuff but want to make sure I get it right. K, I shot some footage on my XL2 at 24p and 2:3. Isn't 2:3:3:2 or Advanced mode only for if you shoot something that you are going to transfer to film. If you weren't to transfer would it have any benefits in the digital world???
Anyways, as for me, I just shot 24p standard. I capture as just DV NTSC 48 KHZ. However, I never thought of going through the easy setup and saw there was a 24p setting. However doesn't that one still just capture at 29.97. Anyways, so my timeline is set at 29.97, is this right or should it be at 24/23.98.
Also, can anyone tell me if a guy should ever play around with the feild dominance stuff. I have never but was just wondering if someone can shed a bit of light on that. Thanks.
Nathan

24p (3:2) already HAS a pulldown on it. Pulldown refers to the process of adding frames by pulling down half the field of one frame and other half of fields from the next frame adding a NEW frame. So, just to keep you straight... you need to REMOVE the pulldown, cadence or pulldown cadence (all the same.)
WARNING... 1) don't attempt if you are short of time 2) have the fear of failing 3) don't have your original material 4) don't have a FULL case of beer 5) NEED this project done right! 6) any number of things I forgot!!
SO... if you've already edited some of this there is no good way to convert what is already edited into a 23.98 sequence. So you'd have to start again.
IF you choose to proceed...
Copy and duplicate all of the material you captured just incase you mess something up.
Open Cinema Tools
Cancel out of the first (database) dialog box
File - Open... first clip
This will open a box with your video in it. Toggle thru the video. You'll see PPCCP (progressive/combined (combined frames will look interlaced)) for every 5 frames. The first C-frame is the BC combination of fields. You'll need to park your playhead on the first of the two C-frames in a group. Then, when you reverse telecine you'll mark the BC option and hit go.
Try it once and see if it works for you. You'll get the new movie open and as you frame thru each frame you shouldn't see any C-frames... they will all be progressive.
Now... open a new FCP project and import those reverse-telecined clips and start editing in 23.98 timeline/sequence.
If you ran into a problem, just duplicate the original clip back again and try again. I may have missed an important step... doing it off the top of my head.
As for shooting 24pA now... well... as I stated before... this can be less stable. The cadence is harder to add for the camera and any ANY oddity in shooting will throw off the cadence and give you a HUGE headache trying to capture it.
Don't EVER turn off your camera while recording
Don't EVER review your material and then continue shooting
Don't EVER change any setup on your camera at ANY time that might switch it to 24p even for a second
Don't EVER take the tape out.
That said you shouldn't have any problems!! Use the DV/NTSC 2:3:3:2 Cadence Removal preset for capture and your clips will indeed be 23.98 in the browser.
Good luck... don't panic.

  • What are the settings for capturing video from Canon HV20

    Hi All,
I want to capture video from Canon HV20 with Premiere Elements 11. What kind of settings should I use to capture the video with full information?
    Here is what I did:
    1) According the manual, I went to Capture settings panel (Edit > Project Settings > Capture) and selected HDV as capture format, because my video is at high definition.
    2) In addition, I checked "Capture to Timeline" and "Split Scenes by cotent".
    Are these settings enough?
    Thanks.

Sounds reasonable, using Add Media/HDV Camcorder, but....
Have you reviewed the Adobe write up on Premiere Elements 11 DV and HDV capture firewire into it.
    http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/premiereelements/using/WS5CDA0F91-60F1-4b79-ABF6-E9E75F498DB2. html#WS2AF26FB5-4C63-4c46-9DB3-7249558F6528
The mention of Get Media instead of Add Media makes me wonder if the video's instructor was demo'ing from Premiere Elements 10, but...
Major factors have always included having Premiere Elements project preset set correctly to correspond to your camera settings...For HDV data capture firewire...
NTSC HDV HDV 1080p30 or PAL HDV HDV 1080p25 depending on if you are targeting a NTSC or PAL area where frame rates are typically a consideration.
I had not done any DV or HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements. But, Premiere Elements 11's take over of the project preset setting would encourage me to encourage you to verify your project settings before the capture.
There are probably many more, but the following is online discussion of one Canon HV20 issue
    http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/316970-video-capture-problems-HV20-camcorder-is-control led-but-no-video-capture
If you experience difficulty with the HDV capture fireware into Premiere Elements 11, you might consider what some others have done in this regard, that is, use HDVSplit for the capture firewire and then import the split (.m2t) clips "Add Media" into Premiere Elements 11 with the appropriate HDV HDV 1080p (1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9) project preset.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.
    Thanks.

  • When importing from Canon XL2, audio is delayed by 5 seconds

When I import from Canon XL2, the audio track is there, but it is off by a few seconds. At first it was only about 1 or 2 seconds, but when I re-imported it got worse. It's fine when I import through iMovie, but I lose my multiple audio tracks.
I know I can re align on the timeline, but that's not the point!

You may have nearly filled up your hard disc.
1 hour of DV is about 13GB. Trying to capture a 2nd hour would take you up to about 26GB of space used up on your hard disc.
It's better to capture to an internal disc, or to a FireWire-connected external disc, as USB - even USB 2.0 - can't necessarily keep up with the constantly sustained data throughput speeds which DV needs.
A Mac needs about 10% of your total hard disc space to be empty, to allow for its internal 'housekeeping', log files, virtual memory files, etc. So if you have an 80GB internal disc, with, say, 13GB of operating system & programs, plus, say, 20GB of pictures, plus, say, 13GB of documents, and you add 13GB (1 hour's worth) of video, that's 59GB, and you'll need about 8GB of free space, that's 67GB accounted for, leaving about 13GB empty for your 2nd hour.
But that spare 13GB of spare space may be scattered around the disc, and not all in one sequential region, which may be why you're getting stuttering.
Not only that, but there may be 'dropouts' on the tape (brief signal disappearance) which may not show on the camcorder (..because many camcorders substitute a previous frame of video for any damaged frame..) but may only show up when you try importing. This may happen if, for instance, you recorded at a slower than normal speed, e.g; LP speed instead of Standard Play speed.
So check, first, how much empty space you have on your internal disc, and see if your external disc can be attached by FireWire, instead of the - what's becoming almost ubiquitous - USB connection.

  • Capturing 24p from XL2

    Hello folks,
I have some tapes that were shot on a canon xl2 in 24p mode. i assumed initially that i would need to capture using the advanced pulldown. when i did this the footage came in still at 29.97. just to see what happened i also captured using the dv/ntsc 24 fps method, and the footage comes in at 24 but i'm scared that its not really doing it correctly. i've read a couple things that seem conflicting; one says you capture at 29.97 and render in a 24 timeline and then you're okay, i've also been told the 29.97 isnt really 24p and that i'm better off just using it at 29.97, which sounds dumb to me.
has anyone got some experience with this particular deal and could offer some input? thanks. so its clear also, this footage is not so much for the image, the camera was used to plug into an audio board for a concert so its image is less important than making sure playback is exact for the audio.
    thanks

ive never done this, so just to clarify i'll look for repeated frames and then count the pattern, right?
could i also just quickly apply the reverse telecine for each option to the footage and then scroll through them after they're done to see which looks better? it seems easier than counting the repeated frames, plus at this point i'm not sure which option applies to which cadence....though i'm sure i could find it online somewhere. thanks for your help.

  • Capturing footage from Canon XH A1

    Hi All -
I'm a bit new to Final Cut Express but ran across the following problem:
When I try to capture footage from my Canon XH A1 HD video camera, FCE does not recognize that there's any connection or that the camera is plugged into my MacBook Pro via the firewire cable. When I plug in my Sony VX2100 it does recognize this camera and I'm able to capture footage when I use that camera, but no luck with the Canon.
Funny thing is, when I try to capture footage from my Canon using iMovie it recognizes the camera and captures the footage with no problem.
Any idea why FCE is not recognizing this camera when iMovie does? Is there a setting on FCE that needs to be changed?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!

Are you using the correct Easy Setup?
Normally it should be HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 (or i60 if you are using NTSC).
I believe your Canon is an HDV camera whilst your Sony shoots DV.
They both need different Easy Setups. iMovie deals with this automatically.

  • Capture settings for Canon XL2 shot in: 16:9 24p 2:3:3:2

I just boght the XL2 and FCP, and need to capture a four hour interview I shot today in 16:9 24p 2:3:3:2. I just don't know how to set up the capture settings correctly.
    Thanks guys,
    Wes
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.0 GHz, 400Gb Hard Drive, 2Gb Ram, 250Gb External

Well, 2:3:#:2 pulldown refers to the way your camera flags the frames while they're recorded, in other words there's not real 24P recording while using tape, because video runs @ 29.97fps ,(what the camera does is to tell to your editing machine that it has to spread the 1st frame over the two first fields the second frame over the next three fields the third frame again over three fields and so on, from there it why it's call 2:3:3:2 pulldown) so in fact to capture true 24P for editing you have to remove the pulldown and remember,if you later are going to edit to tape you'll have to re-apply the pulldown so it prints well to a 29.97 device.
    Hope I was clear enough

  • Capturing Uncompressed 24p from an XL2?

Hello I have an XL2 that I shot two reels of 24p 16x9 footage. I was having troubles capturing the footage and then found the posts in here for using the basic DV NTSC with advanced pulldown. But that is a 15:1 compression ratio is it not? If so is there a way to capture uncompressed? Thank you

No...that is a simple file transfer. The footage captured is the EXACT same resolution as is what is recorded onto your tape.
That compression is 5:1. But that 5:1 compression happens on the tape.
SO if you capture DV/NTSC with advanced pulldown removal, you are getting the best quality you are going to get.

  • Capturing HDV from Canon XH-A1

Hi, I'm new to the Canon XH-A1 and it seems there are a lot of questions out there about capturing HDV footage to FCE... So I'm going to add one more and see if anyone can help me out!
    I keep getting this message:
"Capture Presets must have a video or and audio digitizer set to capture. Please change to the desired preset in the Audio/Video Settings."
I can't seem to find out how to do this on my own, and I feel like I am missing an elusive, yet simple, step in the process.
    Using MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz
    Final Cut Express 4
4 pin to 9 pin Firewire
    Canon XH-A1
Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    Easy Set-Up is set to:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
Canon XH-A1 is set to HDV 60i
I tried setting it to HDV-AIC 1080i60 but then the message is that the hdv deck isn't connected at all. So I tried the AVCHD setting and that led to the other message about A/V settings.

  • Capturing Footage from Canon HV40 to Final Cut Express Issue

I own a Canon HV40 camcorder and shot a short film using the 24p HDV 24F Cine Mode feature (for film look). I've captured the footage into Final Cut Express, but the footage is running at a faster speed. I know this may have something to do with frames per second in the user preferences section.
Does anyone have the concrete solution to this problem and will I have to recapture my footage under a different setting?
    Please advise.
    Thank you!
    - Eric

    Hi Eric,
FCE only supports frame rates of 60i, 30p, 50i, and 25p. To edit 24p footage you'd need Final Cut Pro.

I just filmed some footage, with the Panasonic HVX-200. I filmed in 480/24p on a tape. when capturing it in FCP do I choose DV50-NTSC 24p, or DV-NTSC 24p in the easy set up menu? I think its DV50, Im just not 100% sure. IF anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

    Yup...pretty sure...
    #23 Differences between 24p and 24pA
    Shane's Stock Answer #23
Quoting Ken Stone's site found at:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/24p_in_FCPnattress.html
    24p Normal
When shooting in 24p Normal, the camera is adding normal standard 3:2 pulldown to the video, which results in 24p footage designed to work with any non-linear editing suite and it will play back and look good directly to any NTSC monitor. You can use 24p Normal footage just like normal video from any DV camera, and everything will work fine, but obviously, the footage will have a film look to it. If you’re just going straight back to NTSC video tape, then using 24p Normal is the simplest, easiest workflow. No special treatment of the footage is needed and you really can just edit as normal.
    24p Advanced
Before you shoot 24p Advanced, you should fully understand it’s workflow implications. If you watch 24p Advanced footage before you’ve removed it’s pulldown, then it will look a bit jumpy and jerky. This is totally correct, because 24p Advanced is not designed to be viewed as is.
To use 24p Advanced and gain all it’s advantages, you should know that you cannot edit it as is (as this would leave it’s jerky looking pulldown intact), but you must first remove it’s pulldown. Final Cut Pro will do this for you, leaving you with the 24p footage without any of the extra “padding” fields that are added to make it’s frame rate 29.97fps. Now that your footage is 23.98fps, it must be edited on a 23.98fps timeline, and this can cause problems if you, for instance, want to include other footage, B-Roll, or stock footage, that comes from a different source. However, once you have your finished edit at 23.98fps, you can make a 24p DVD, which will allow you to compress your MPEG2 less than if you were making a normal 29.97fps NTSC DVD, and hence attain higher picture quality. Similarly, if you’re making a web movie, you will find it easier to get a higher quality result from 23.98fps media than normal NTSC media. 23.98fps movies are also easier to take out to film that 29.97fps movies.
If you are editing in a 23.98fps timeline, Final Cut Pro will add pulldown on the fly, over Firewire, so that you can see your movie on a normal NTSC monitor. Similarly, it will add pulldown when going back to DV tape. However, this will not work on a non-DV format output, say to Digital Betacam, and slower Macintoshes do not have the power to add 3:2 pulldown in realtime, falling back to lower quality pulldowns which although are not too bad while editing, will not make the final project look as acceptably good on television as a final product.
What that tells me is that 24P just adds a "look" of 24 fps to the footage that resembles that of telecined film, but that you work with normally at 29.97fps. Or, if you want to, you can add a reverse telecine and work at 23.98. Either way.
BUT, with 24PA, the footage looks jittery when played on the tape. So sure, you can work with it and output it to tape, but that tape is useless to anyone OTHER than someone who can capture it and perform a reverse telecine to work with it. It will not work as a Master tape for any viewable purpose: Broadcast TV, projected video from tape, a master tape for dubbing purposes. So, in effect, it is useless as a tape master, and should be avoided.
If you want to have a tape master, shoot and edit 24P at the 29.97 framerate.

  • Canon MX870 HELP PLEASE

Just recently my wifi printer (canon PIXMA MX870) wouldn't work when it goes to sleep. I mean that when the display goes black it will not print and on the Mac it just pauses itself when i unpause it it repauses itself and won't print. Then i have to turn it off and on again (printer) and it will print fine. Please help. I haven't change ANY settings, i just replaced the PGI-Black INK and the cyan and yellow ink is "low". Any help will be VERY much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem recently with my Canon MX870.
    - Starting a new print job won't wake the printer from sleep
    - Clicking "Resume Printing" on the paused printer in the OS X print queue manager sets it to "Printing" temporarily, but eventually goes back to "Paused". (the printer display doesn't change at all)
Furthermore, I've had 4 instances now where the printer has stopped a job halfway through a page. Two document and two photo prints stopped like this.
These problems are observed from two of my Macs (laptop and desktop), so I think it comes down to Software Update. I've recently been prompted to update the Canon printer driver (twice in a row, if I recall...) and also an HP print driver.
Looking in System Preferences -> Software Update -> Installed Software, I see:
    On my laptop:
    Date Name Version
11/4 HP Printer Software Update 2.5.2
10/25 Canon Printer Software UPdate 2.3
    10/25 Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 1.0
    10/25 ProKit Update 6.0.1
    10/21 FaceTime
    10/3/10 Xcode Update 3.2.4
9/25 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
    On my Desktop:
    Date Name Version
    10/30 Logic Pro 9.1.3
    10/24 Java for Mac OSX 10.6 Update 3 1.0
    10/24 Prokit Update 6.0.1
10/20 LED Cinema Display Software Update
10/18 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
10/15 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
The things they have in common are:
    1. Two printer software updates for the same version (strange)
    2. Java updates
    3. Prokit updates
apleaka, could you check to see what updates you have? The funny thing is, I did some major printing from the Desktop on Oct 25 and didn't notice any problems, which is after all of the relevant updates...
