Capturing 3CCD footage using single chip minidv camera

Question:
Has anyone captured footage shot with a pro 3CCD camera using a less expensive single chip mini DV camera? I do a LOT more capturing than actual filming and would like to cut down on wear to my good camera. I'm thinking there should be no loss in quality since the info is there on the tape from when it was filmed, and the cheaper camera's single chip never comes into play anyway. Is this right?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Gene

it could have no chip you're only using the camera as a vtr tho I'd wager the more expensive transports will hold up better. as long as the transport and electronics will play back the format you are shooting it'll work fine. take a test tape from your camera to best buy or whatever and make sure it'll play what you shoot

  • Capturing into FCP using a canon optura20 camera

This is just a recent problem, when i connect my camera(Canon Optura20) to my computer (iMac G5) and open up final cut pro 5 and go to the capture screen it sees the camera and knows it connected but when i click on "Capture" it bring up a bigger screen but its all black and after waiting a few secounds it will stop. What can i do?

If you clicked, "Capture Now," then that window is supposed to be there. Just press the play button on your camera the next time you see it or try capturing using "Batch Capture," or "Capture Clip".

  • Capturing AVCHD Footage

Hello. I am trying to decide to buy a hard drive HD camera or a Digital Tape HD Camera. I do most of my editing on a PowerMac G5 that is not intel chip mac. I understand to capture avchd footage you need an intel chip mac. To get around that, I would capture the footage from the Hard Drive Camera using a Macbook that I have is an intel chip based machine, using final cut express. I would capture the footage onto an external hard drive. I would then connect that drive to my PowerMac G5, that again is not an intel chip mac. Would I be able to edit that footage using final cut express even though the PowerMac I edit on is not an intel chip mac?

    Yes.
Upon import, the AVCHD is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec. So after import, anything which can edit AIC will work.

  • Capturing Old Hi8 footage using Sony TRV310 DIgital 8 Camera Using Firewire

I have read many of the previous posts regarding capture of old Hi8 footage. I recently purchased a MacPro and am in the process of converting my video and photography work over to it from a PC. I have both a MiniDV and the above mention Digital8. There is no problem capturing new footage shot with the Digital8 since it is recorded in digital format. However, I have years of old Hi8 tape. I get the "VTR OK" message, and can use the on screen control to advance and view the tapes. However, when I try to capture them into FCP 6.0, I get a message that it is waiting for a time code. Is there a setting that I need to change to get around this?

Thank you all for your prompt responses. You were on the money.
I used the "uncontrollable device" setting with "Capture Now". This allowed me to used the camcorder's on board controls to advance the video for capture. When you use the "uncontrollable device setting, you no longer get the "VTR OK" status message. You get a "No communications" status message.
The capture of the hour long Hi8 tape went fine with no dropped frames that I can tell. However, at the end of the capture, I got a message that the "Audio Sample rate for the file was different than the Audio sample rate of the source tape. And, that the audio and video might be out of sync". Sure enough, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. I'll have to look back in my old camera manuals to see if I can find what the audio sample rate for Hi8 is and make that adjustment.
    Again thanks.

  • A good miniDV camera for footage capture for FC6?

I've got a Macbook Pro and FC6 and I'm looking to buy a miniDV camera just for the purpose of capturing my footage. I'm looking for a cheap camera, like the Samsung SC-D382, but don't know what sort of specifications to look for. Can I use a USB cable to capture footage, or does it need to be a 6 pin firewire cable? Also, does anyone have any recommendations regarding cheap but good cameras for capturing? Thanks!

look for a camera that also has A/V inputs and will pass them through to firewire. That way, if the need arises, you can capture from an analog source such as a VCR (archiving, perhaps). This is a great budget solution, as dedicated D/A converters can cost as much as or more than a cheap miniDV camera.

  • FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)
    Thanks for your time!

Cheers Tom, I think you just saved me a small fortune..

  • Digitizing minidv cam footage in Premiere CS6

Has anyone else had any issues digitizing minidv cam footage in CS6 & if so, how did you trouble shoot the issue?

As long as your (unknown brand/model) camera is not actually analog, the video is already digital, so all you are doing with your Firewire connection is transferring from tape to computer

  • Are there any benefits to using optimized media when capturing SD footage?

I am going through old MiniDV tapes and I have to say, going through my first project using FCPX has been very good. I have made use of proxy media, but I wanted to see if anyone might weigh in on if creating optimized media is a good idea with SD footage.
And my question might be answered with a bit of a better understanding of what optimized media is. The way I understand it is that the footage is of the same quality of raw footage but much less smaller in filesize (megabytes wise.) Is that correct? In that case, if I capture footage and check the optimized media box, does it capture raw footage and then also create optimized media?
    Many thanks!

Nope, DV footage wouldn't benefit from Optimized. Optimized Media is designed for formats that are not especially well-suited to editing, such as AVCHD or H.264- mostly because these formats are more optimized for in-camera use and don't hold up as well to multiple generations in editing. Plus they require much more CPU power to decode and playback.
DV doesn't have these issues as much, is ideally suited to editing and so wouldn't benefit. Proxy mode on the other hand would help a little as it knocks down the file size and amount of processing power. But to be honest the difference in file sizes and CPU requirements between Proxy and DV in standard definition are so minimal that personally I wouldn't bother to use it. Stick with pure DV.

  • MiniDV camera/capture question

I have some MiniDV footage shot with an XL2. I need to get the footage captured as soon as possible but I don't have access to the XL2. I do have a $300 Consumer Panasonic MiniDV camera that's about 6 years old.
My question is will I have the same quality digitizing with the cheap camera as I would the XL2?

For the most part, the quality should be the same since its a digital transport. That being said, the heads on the XL are most likely a better quality and might do a better job of reading the information on the tape.
I make it a practice not to capture from the camera to limit wear on the heads, but thats comes with a debate from others who think that the tapes that writes the information will do a better job of reading it. I use a dedicated DV deck for capture.
Like Zeb says, give it a test and see if any noticeable flaws.

  • Capture dv footage on hdv camera audio disappearing ?

Problem with audio while capturing dv footage to fcp7 from my Canon xha1s
The footage is shot on down conversion dv settings from the Canon xha1s
The tapes also contain footage shot on a Sony vx1000 and a Canon gl-2
    Heres where it gets weird
The footage from all three cameras plays back with audio perfectly no issue on the camera
The footage captures into fcp7 with audio synced and everything
everything i even put it on the timeline and it played back perfectly
BUT when i go to file the footage from the "capture scratch" folder Theres NO audio
Where normal clips read "untitled01.mov" These clips read "untitled01-v"
I get it. Video only. Can't find any settings change to fix this.
I found a way to make fcp7 press out the "untitled01-a" & "untitled01-v" which i could then file. Sync in editor and use just fine
But the type of footage im editing literally gives me hundreds and hundreds of clips and that process is simply too meticulous
And is out of the queststion
Please How do i capture both of these -a -v files as one simple .mov format video in this instance
It seems like because im getting the audio captured at one point, this problem would be solved by some obscure box that i need to check that i just can't find for some reason

In FCP, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > System Settings and on the scratch disks tab, make sure Video Capture and Audio Capture are routed to the same drive destination:
    Then click OK.

  • Capturing footage using an analogue to digital converter

    Hi
I've recently edited a 2 hour mutli-camera show from Digi Beta. We captured
the footage via firewire, cut the programme and mastered it to DVD for
duplication. We've now been asked to online the programme for broadcast.
Presumably this should be a simple task:
    * capture the footage from Digi Beta with an analogue to digital
    converter
    * Export the current programmes as an EDL into a DigiBeta (PAL)
    version.
    * Render anything necessary
    * Import the online audio
    * Output to DigiBeta with the Digital to analogue converter.
Please can someone recommend a suitable D-A converter? We were thinking of
getting an AJA Kona LH/ LHe.
Also, is there anything else we may have missed in the process / potential
    pitfalls?
We usually offline on FCP 5.1.2 and give and EDL to a post-production
facility but figure doing it ourselves will be a cheaper option.
    Current kit spec:
    Mac OS X version 10.4.8
    Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz Power PC G5
    Memory 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    Thanks

just on the semantics of it ... analogue doesn't come into it
DigiBeta is digital, so is FCP. you need an I/O card.
the Kona LHe from AJA is a very good choice, as are the Decklink offerings from Blackmagic Design.
the method would be to create an "offline" version of your project with the "online" codec/resolution setting of your choice. you do this using FCP's "File > Media Manager" tool. next you would use Batch Capture to capture the media needed to recreate your sequence at that codec/resolution (using the DigiBeta masters via the I/O card to your Mac). then you'd output the upresed "online" version back to Digibeta (again going via the card)
potential pitfalls ... media manager has a long history of being hopeless
    chck this post: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1075398
(although apple claims media manager is feeling much better now)
heres a ink to a tutorial on the process ... not new but still relevant

  • Capture an image using the web camera from a web application

    Hi All,
Could anyone please share the steps what have to be followed for capture an image using the web camera from a web application.
I have a similar requirement like this,
    1) Detect the Webcam on the users machine from the web application.(To be more clear when the user clicks on 'Add Photo' tool from the web application)
    2) When the user confirms to save, save the Image in users machine at some temporary location with some unique file name.
    3) Upload the Image to the server from the temporary location.
Please share the details like, what can be used and how it can be used etc...
    Thanks,
    Suman

    1) Detect the Webcam on the users machine from the web application.(To be more clear when the user clicks on 'Add Photo' tool from the web application)There's not really any good way to do this with JMF. You'd have to somehow create a JMF web-start application that will install the native JMF binaries, and then kick off the capture device scanning code from the application, and then scan through the list of devices found to get the MediaLocator of the web cam.
    2) When the user confirms to save, save the Image in users machine at some temporary location with some unique file name. You'd probably be displaying a "preview" window and then you'd just want to capture the image. There are a handful of ways you could capture the image, but it really depends on your situation.
    3) Upload the Image to the server from the temporary location. You can find out how to do this on google.
All things told, this application is probably more suited to be a FMJ (Freedom for Media in Java) application than a JMF application. JMF relies on native code to capture from the web cams, whereas FMJ does not.
Alternately, you might want to look into Adobe Flex for this particular application.

  • Do I have to buy a miniDV camera to read in miniDVD tape footage?

I have a miniDV tape a client gave me to capture video footage from and edit in Final Cut Express.
Does a simple miniDV playback device exist that can output Firewire to FCE?
Otherwise I think I have to go spend $280 on the least expensive camcorder I can find.
    Thanks,
    DAN

An inexpensive camcorder is going to be the least expensive option. Watch out to make sure the footage in is 16-bit/48kHz for the audio and pray they didn't record in the LP mode!

  • I want to store movies on an SD disk, watch them on the way to Europe, then use the chip to record photos in my camera.  I can't get the iPad mini to recognize the videos I've recorded.

I want to store movies on an SD disk, watch them on the way to Europe, then use the chip to record photos in my camera.  I can't get the iPad mini to recognize the videos I've recorded.

I'm a bit lost - you first say
"The only file(s) I can sometimes get it to recognize are the ones shot with a camera onto an SD card"
    then you say
" If I take an unused SD card and record video with my camera, it will see, and import the file to the Photo app."
In the first statement, aren't you using an SD card in the camera?  And what do you mean by "unused SD card"?    Cameras put their files in specific folders on a card, and your device only reads photos and video from those folders, not from anywhere else on the card.
