Capturing 720p 24fps as one clip

I've got about 45 minutes of tape for a client, shot 720p at 24fps, on miniDV tape.
Is there a way to capture it as one long clip, without breaking it up into individual clips on the time code start/stop (yes, I I have that disabled in the Capture Settings)?
I've learned to compensate for losing the first few seconds when individual clips are created, but it's still be nice to just give them the "raw tape" if possible.
Thanks.

You are asking for trouble in two places -
1. Your sync between audio/video can drift
2. DV tape is never recorded as 24fps - it is always 29.97. If you want to remove the pulldown that is added at the time of recording, you'll want individual clips with a unified pulldown cadence to work with. Starting/stopping and discontinuous TC will wreck this process.

  • Capture MiniDV tape as one clip

I am doing my first MiniDV tape capture. I rewound the tape, clicked play and Capture Now. When the tape was done, it was divided up into clips. I don't want this. How do I import it as one clip? (it broke it up into 5 clips of varying length) this is a friends home video.

If you are working with DV/NTSC or DV/PAL material, Final Cut Pro does not automatically segment the capture (unless there are time code breaks).
If you have HDV footage, I believe there is a check box somewhere in the capture settings to turn off the automatic clip generation.

  • One clip loses audio

I have been bringing in clips fine, but one drops the audio in the sequence. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

as enzo suggests ... the facts of life are that every now and again, for no appreciable reason, a clip may capture with no audio or no video ... ghost in the machine... if you capture enough clips you'll get used to it.
i used to look after a station that captured vast numbers of clips daily ... every once in a while a single clip would be missing audio or video whilst hundreds of clips on either side, on the same or different reels, would capture with no problem ... at the end of the day its just a computer based system and errors do happen
its one clip out of many, just recapture, its not worth your time or trouble stressing out over it

  • Import whole movie as one clip in imovie

Hi, not sure if I am posting this in the right place now - ah just looked down below my post and it appears it will put it in the imovie forum, good
I have never used iMovie.  I've used several video editing products in past years, but haven't done much recently and now I have a deadline of Christmas eve to get this done.
A good few years ago we transferred all of my wife's family home super 8 film  to DV format and then spent weeks editing them down to a very nice 20 minute video with music.  Made a bunch of DVDs but over the years, they seem to have all stopped working or been lost.  The master is still on DV tape and I now have my sony camera linked up to my MBP and it seems to work very well once I got the firewire to thunderbolt connector.  It controls the camera perfectly, better than a lot of products that I used to use.
So my problem is ithat when I imported the video, it cut everything up into clips.... and when I put all the clips into a movie they do not play seamlessly... as I don't want to do any editing on this, I just want it all as one long clip so I can export it into suitable formats for my sister-in-law to download on Christmas day...
So I have gone back to the import process and I couldn't seem to find any settings or anything for adjusting how the video is imported from my camera.
I certainly hope this can be done... not so much video editing I want to do, but more of a conversion process I guess, any help would be urgently and greatly appreciated!

hmm, after 24 hours of searching etc I have come to the conclusion that iMovie is pretty rubbish at functionality and a way for Apple to push it's iDrive and get me to pay money for it as well... :-(
I tried putting all my clips into a movie, but the audio skips between the clips and I can't reduce the transition to 0 -  so actually no way of recreating my whole movie again and no way of capturing the whole movie in one clip - granted I've only been using this for a day, but after years of video editing I cant say the interface settting or anything else is intuitive about it... seemed promising at first, but in the end I got my old version of Adobe Premier out and it did what I needed first time, no fuss.  Afraid iMovies is heading for the trash.

  • Capture Now - Making New Master Clips ???

Now i really have a strange thing going on... I am using Capture Now to start an edit session with HDV Footage and it is making NEW Master Clips when there is a stopdown/startup recording on the tape... (a change in setup for a shot)...
I have gone in the User Settings and unclicked all of the stuff dealing with dropframe or timecode breaks with no luck...
    Any Help ???
    -Brian

It will make life harder to keep the bin's organized... because i am going to have to view each clip separately -vs- scanning one clip that has all of my b-roll or my uppers / interviews to find the story...
yea i did restart the whole computer and had to reset the capture preferences and such...
I do know about the grief that is associated with timecode breaks in the middle of a shot... dealt with stuff like that in school 7 years ago...
I do appreciate the help...thanks again...

  • Transitions stopped working on one clip only.

I'm editing a video consisting of 2 HDV clips, captured from a Canon XH A1.
When I slice and dice clip one, I have no problem with dissolve transitions such as crossfade, or dip to white.
With clip 2,  any transitions only show an abrupt change to black for the duration of the transition.
Both clips are on the same timeline.
Rubberbanding opacity between two video tracks works fine.
I've checked the properties of the clips and they're identical.
Wondering if I'm missing something, or maybe I've a corrupted clip file.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

    More info!
When I switch from mpe hardware mode to software mode, everything works (albeit more rendering required)
Still only a problem on one clip though.
    Maybe an MPE issue?

  • Help me import as one clip instead of breaking up

    Hello
I've tried to use my brothers Mac to capture footage from a super8 analogue tape camera. Imovie09 works fine in doing so with one problem - we cannot figure out how to make it capture the footage as one continuous raw file. Imovie09 immediately separates the footage into broken up clips.
I cannot find in the preferences an option to not allow the automatic scene breakup.
So, I want to capture a whole tapes worth, without its separation. I've only found worries about how to not let this happen in various posts on the internet.
Any help would be appreciated, please ask for further elaboration if willing to help but unsure of my exact problem yet.
    Cheers,
    Joh

    Greetings Winston,
I only want to digitise an already edited film of my own, of which I placed the production back on to an analogue tape upon finishing (as a means to store it a few years ago). So basically I want to capture the tape whole without any automatically assumed scene breaks.
I did have that error you mentioned with one of the tapes. We tried to capture two - the first one broke up into 6 large chunks, the 2nd into hundreds of 1-4 second clips. How can I convince Imovie to leave them as one?
    Cheers,
    Joh

  • Import from tape- One shot/one clip

When I import my raw footage from tape, I would like each shot to automatically become its own clip.  Is this possible with FCPX?

Thanks Tom.  I think I've figured out the problem.  The first few tapes I captured were recorded in a Sony DCR VX1000.  They were each captured as one long clip. When I tried tapes recorded in a VX2000 (which I also use as my playback deck), each shot was captured as it's own clip.  Interesting....

  • Capture a tape and separate clips

I am new to Final Cut Express 4 but I have had extensive experience with various Premier Elements, including PE7 as well as with WideStudio 10 & 11. Notwithstanding all that I cannot find out how to capture the DV tape from my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40E) so that each 'clip' is separated. In the other products above, once you have clicked to separate clips, (by time-codes) they were all captured and recorded as separate clips. In FCE I tried capturing with Batch Capture but that did not work. Can someone please help me as to what i need to do?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Meg The Dog
thanks for your suggestion. I did read Page 192 but was not very clear to me. Do I take it that first I have to capture the entire tape in one 'hit' and then segregate the tape into clips? With other programs I used, the 'capture' itself segregated and recorded each clip as it was recording/capturing the tape. The 'segregation' was based on each clip's time code. Is that not the case with FCE 4? Does that mean that I cannot 'capture' all my clips on a tape in one hit as i used to? Or have I misunderstood you response?
    Thanks again

  • Multicam Edit - One clip shifted

    Hi folks,
I'm editing a multicam concert shoot in miniDV format in FCP 6.0.5.
Although the cameras had timecode, they had different offsets,
and using the multicam offset adjustment (ctl-shift-drag)
produced some really bizarre behavior, so I went back and
set in-points using an audio cue, recreated the multiclip
syncing with the in-points, dragged the multiclip into a timeline,
and then dragged the beginning of the multiclip to the left so
I could get all the footage before the in-points.
The resulting sync was very tight.
Now I have been editing a few minutes of this 50-minute take,
and one clip is getting weird. Every time I cut to it, it appears
in the timeline with a out-of-sync indicator. Every instance is
off by 8 frames. I can resync it (double-click, then ctl-option)
using the "pull in to sync" menu item, but it's still quite strange
that the clip seems to think it's offset in the first place.
Another clip in the multiclip seems to have drifted in sync
as well, although there is no numerical indication.
Has anyone experienced this? There are a lot of edits done
and a lot more to do.
    Thanks for your time!
    Les

    Thanks for your responses.
Kevan, I don't think the problem is timecode breaks because I set FCP
to abort on dropped frames when I captured. It makes sense, however,
    that miniDV camcorders can drift.
Michael, I certainly plan on keeping the option open for chopping the
    performance into multiple multiclips.
I think the problem is "dragging the beginning of the multiclip to the left."
Perhaps, but what do you do when the only clear moment for syncing
all four cameras happens well into the first song? It's a real pity that all
cameras were not running when the clapperboard was struck!
The strange thing I'm experiencing is that sync seems to drift AFTER
I have the multiclip made, AFTER I've dragged the beginning of the
multiclip to the left. It's as if the act of editing has moved the sync.
It's a sunny morning here in northern California. I'm going to have
another coffee and look at this problem with fresh eyes.

  • How do I swap one clip for another in Final Cut Pro 7?

How do I sway one clip for another in Final Cut Pro 7? I am doing what it says in a book but it is not working. Thanks.

You drag the clip from the browser to the clip on the timeline. Wait till the timeline clip goes white. Drop it and pick from the menu that appears the replace option you want.

  • How can i leave audio from one clip playing, while showing another one in i

i am editing a movie, using iMovie 08, and want to use sound for a clip in the video for the end credits. how can i do this?
just to be clear, i am not trying to add audio. i am trying to leave the audio from ONE CLIP playing, while viewing a new frame. thanks.

This is simple in iMovie 11 (drag and drop), but in iMovie 08, you can still do it.

  • How do I copy effects (crop, movement, etc) from one clip to another?

I have adjusted one clip of footage  in my "timeline" to be a certain size, etc and I want to apply those same effects to a bunch of clips in the timeline. How do I do that? One use to just copy the clip and paste properties but I can't find how to do that in FCPX.
    Thanks for any help

Thot I'd pop back over here after happening upon the Cmd-Opt-C keystroke which is defined in FCPX Help as "copy selected effects".
This implies that instead of the old way (Copy with Cmd-C, then select attributes with the Paste Attributes (Opt-V) command), one makes the effects choices up front -- using cmd-opt-C, and then pastes them using the Cmd-Opt-V keystroke.
However, I see no difference between using Cmd-C and using Cmd-Opt-C.  The Cmd-Opt-V keystroke still ends up pasting all attributes/effects.
Guess I'll go bring this to their attention.

  • How to apply multiple effects on one clip

Here's a simple question, so I guess there's got to be a simple solution. Is it possible to have more than just one effect on one clip? If yes, how can I do that? I've searched the iMovie help, but it didn't give me any answer.

No, you cannot apply more than one effect at a time in iMovie '09.
However, you can always adjust Video Levels, Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, etc. in Inspector.
