Capturing a screen shot from a DVD?

Is it possible to be watching a commercial DVD on my computer and capture a screen shot from that DVD that I could eventually then print? (I put this question in iPhoto because I imagine it would come into play at some point.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes you can but you will need a 3rd party application to take the screenshot. The system's screenshot feature will not. I use Snapz Pro X which takes screenshots, video screenshots, etc. But it's a little pricey. Go to VersionTracker.com and do a search for screenshot. You'll find a number of canididates that you can demo and see which will do the job for you.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in the library rebuild pane, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

Do you mean you're trying to get a screen shot from a movie playing from a DVD? If so, download the VLC Media Player. It will allow screen grabs during playback.

Screen shots from dvd

This is my first time posting with this and I am a relatively new user to macs to I am not too sure what I am doing.
I put a DVD into the side of the computer and clicked the DVD player that popped up. It is not iDVD but I could not find a discussion board for a regular DVD player. When I play the DVD it wokrs fine. I have it paused and I am trying to get a screen shot of the paused DVD screen.
With the screen in full screen I hhit appleshift3. I am doing this trying to get a full screen shot. However, I get the error message that "screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback. Please quit dvd player first."
Does anyone know what I should do to get a screen shot of the dvd? Any help would really be appreciated!

PS You can't take a screen shot when the DVD player is on because of copyright rules...however, you can purchase third party software that probably will.

Screen shots - From Keynotes to Pages

Hi all,
I am typing a document and need to insert some screen shots from a slide show.
I tried apple + 3 + shift, but the picture comes with parts of the desktop.
What do I do if I only want the slides?

Hi, I also like to use the "capture widget" located at http://vanillasoap.com/widgets/ I find it easier than remembering shortcuts on the keyboard. If you ever need a more intensive screen capture, then check out Snapz Pro X located at http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/ It is a little more pricey, but the ability to do video is key for me. Screen shots from handset?

I often see people posting images of screen shots from their handset, and this is obviously something they've initiated (as opposed to some general or stock image), what app is used for this, and where from? Is it free?

Command-Shift-3 and 4 works just fine on several Macs that I have here.
Try restarting your Mac....or post in the specific support area for your Mac model....for more advice.

This takes a screenshot of the screen, and you can then save it as a file on the desktop

tnd function keys checked, but i found a key on the keyboard labeled "fn"
when i hit it a top row function key engages...if i hit the top row key without tapping the "fn" key the loser noise occurs & obviously key doesn't work
i have never run into this before!!
had wireless before!!
this is the new smaller one that comes with new imacs
also i f i keep the fn key depressed i can manage to dim/brighten etc for as far as i need, but if i release only one movement placement is made.
all the function keys work now, but i must hit this "fn" key
there is obviously a command i must engage to work correctly & seamlessly.
i am on target by apple to send a new keyboard but if i don't need to wait for one ..i'd be happier.
any ideas out there??

How to send screen shots from IM?

Hi,
Is there a way to send screen shots through IM? Like copy and paste?
I used IBM's Sametime earlier which allowed to send screen shots through the IM. Can you please tell me how to send it through Lync? I know how to send the files, but I just want to copy and paste the screen shots. I use the Microsoft One Note Screen clipping
(Window + S).

i don't think it's possible to send Screenshots through the Lync Client. you may have to get it to a .jpg or any image format file and send it to the other party.

Screen Recordings from the DVD Drive No Longer Permitted

I am a literature professor who teaches books that are often adapted into film. When I give lectures on those books, I like to include short snippets of clips of those films from DVDs to help my students visualize the material, and I do that by doing a screen recording (via screenflow) of the DVD clip I want to teach, so I can drop the film clip into the keynote without breaking stride. Also, I teach from a room without a DVD player and via a macbook air (no dvd player), so carrying around the DVD, stopping the lecture, switching the A/V, priming the DVD, hunting for the 30 second clip, and returning to the Keynote lecture is just not something I want -- or am able -- to do. But the new update of the mac software -- I have OSX 10.9 -- greys out the media box when I hit "play" on the DVD player and "record" on screenflow, making it impossible to make a screen recording of the film. I researched screenflow and it said the problem is not with their program but with the newest Apple Update. They have no control over the greyed out box. The only problem is that I own the screen recording software (which I paid for just for this purpose), the DVD I'm recording, AND I'm only using it in an educational setting AND I'm only using clips no longer than a couple of minutes, which I also cite from the original source so students can find the whole thing if they want. Apple should not be greying out this option for me. I'm completely in my rights. Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know a way around it?

You are attempting to copy copyrighted material with a view to re-publishing it. This is illegal in many countries and is known as 'ripping', a subject expressly forbidden to be discussed in these forums.
All I can therefore suggest is: Google for an answer.

Capturing screen shots in iMovie

Hi,
I want to capture screen shots of my movie in iMovie to have still images from different scenes to then edit in photoshop. Is this possible, or do I need to get specific software for that? Does anybody know how to capture screen shots from an iMovie?

Position your cursor where you want the still.
Right-click and select ADD STILL TO PROJECT
You will see the still added to the en of your project.
Now right-click on the still and select SHOW IN FINDER
In the finder, right click on the still JPEG file and select COPY.
Now you can paste the still onto your desktop or a folder of your choice and import into iPhoto or Photoshop.
If you don't want to clutter your video project with stills at the end, you can start a new project for just the stills. Then you place the cursor within your EVENT at the point you want a still. Then Right-click and select ADD Still TO PROJECT. This keeps things tidy.
