Capturing and editing 24p from panasonic dvx100a

hi all,
forgive me if this post seems thoroughly redundant...but after several hours of searching the web i am utterly confused. I need help!
here's where I'm at:
shot a project with a dvx100a for the first time. Shot everything at 24p Standard (aka F5 mode on the camera).
am editing in FCP 4.5 and the
final destination for the project is the web..but might need to make dvd's for the client along the way.
also want to incorporate a few Super 8mm shots that are already transfered to MiniDV into the edit as well.
my main question(s) is this:
1. What setting do I capture my 24p footage at?
normal dv ntsc? dv ntsc advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal? dv ntsc anamorphic? what about cinema tools reverse telecine or 3:2 pulldown removal? i'm confused by all the conflicting advice i've read...
2. What setting do i create my sequence at for editing?
dv ntsc normal? dv ntsc 23.97? dv ntsc anamorphic? again confused here by conflicting info on the web...
3. What does the cinema tools reverse telecine do/achieve?
4. What's the optimal output settings/process for the web (quicktime movie) to keep it looking like it does when i watch the raw footage back in camera?
any and all advice, tips and guidance is GREATLY appreciated. i need to get started on this project and can't figure out what is the best settings/means to get going with.

one quick answer I can give you is all your questions regarding anamorphic settings. The only time you use the anamorphic settings is when you shoot your footage using the anamorphic option in your camera or use an anamorphic lens. How can you tell after the fact? Well, look in your capture window with the regular settings. Do people look stretched top ways, look taller and skinnier than normal? If you answered yes, then you need the anamorphic (or 16:9) settings. Once you switch this, you will immediately see the proper conversion in you're capture window (everyone will look normal again and you will be capturing a 16:9 image).
As for the 24p, 3:2 pulldown stuff, I simply cannot answer as that is still all foreign to me.
You might want to also inquire as to weather the camera shoots true 24p (progressive) or if it is interlaced footage.
hope this helps a little bit.

  • Dvx100 24pa captured and edited at 29.97

    Hi there,
I'm trying to rework an old project where i mistakenly captured and edited 24pa footage from a dvx100b at 29.97.
is it possible to perform a reverse telecine with cinema tools to remove the pulldown from a finished edit on a 29.97 timeline? if so, what settings should i use?
i normally remove pulldown on capture with 24pa footage, and edit in a 23.98 timeline, but this project is from before i knew better, and mistakenly worked in 29.97, and am now suffering from interlacing problems/duplicate frames.
any advice would be appreciated. i am trying to avoid recapturing and re-editing.
thanks for your help in advance

    thanks guys...
these are both possible solutions that i didn't think of.
the situation with this piece is it is one long source clip, chopped down into 100+ short clips, with a lot of precise cuts, but unfortunately no respect for pulldown cadence.
using cinema tools, i have performed reverse telecine which seems to remove the pulldown for clips that have the right timing, and unfortunately, not for those that are off.
i should probally just re-edit, but this is the sort of project you really only want to do once.
i guess i'm hoping for an easy fix, and that probally doesn't exist.
i still have the digitized footage and the sequence (29.97). is it possible to somehow remove the pulldown of the source footage, and rework the timeline accordingly?
    thanks again.

  • Need advice ensuring my 25p is captured and edited properly.

Hi all. New to Final Cut and just got a DVX100BEN (PAL) and want to know what I have to setup to capture and edit 25p with Final Cut.
My train of thought here is that I can just use a standard DV PAL setup as the DVX100b stored 25p in a 50i stream. So my questions are:
    1) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for capture?
    2) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for the timeline or do I have to set it up as progressive some how?
    3) When rendering, say to DVD can I just render using Compresser to DVD PAL as normal and all is good?
Also, viewer seems to deinterlace it's display so I was wondering if there is a way to get it to just show the rawm image, as it's already progressive from the DVX?
    Cheers
    Aaron Koolen

Well, noone offered me an answer, no matter where I looked, but after some searching I'm pretty certain that you just use the DV PAL template, keep everything interlaced and render out as DV PAL.
I say this because I found a post somewhere by Graeme Natress that pretty much said this.
So, personally, I'm happy with it. Now if you were wanting to render as a true progressive movie then you'd have to do something to tell your renderer to NOT deinterlace the footage.

  • What for a live event capture and edition ?

    Hi there,
What software is best for a live event capture and edition ? (for an instant public feedback) a one with the ability to be controlled by a 2-octave midi keyboard.
Can FCP do that ? even partly ?
The idea is to be able to do the same then tv shows (live cuts and effect layers)
    thanks,
    Ionel

FCP is a professional non-linear editing application ... not a live event playback device.
If you need a very fast turnaround editing facility you can look at FCP coupled with something like Picture Ready from Gallery, you can download a demo to test
if you're looking at doing a 2 camera live cut/switch then you can consider a dual decklink I/O solution and On-Air 2.0

You will have to do some leg-work yourself. You will probably want to use DOM to parse and manipulate your XML data. Xerces (xml.apache.org) is a good open source parser. There are extensive examples on their site.

    Hi
Not sure if this is a Fireworks or Dreamweaver problem but
    here goes.
I¹ve created a graphic in Fireworks CS3 on the Mac and

    What?!!
I¹ve only just exported it from Fireworks! It¹s

When you export the sliced graphics from Fireworks it places
    them into a
table. In my instance the code says...
    <!-- fwtable fwsrc="Brands.png" fwpage="Page 1"
    fwbase="Brands.jpg"
    fwstyle="Dreamweaver" fwdocid = "325827661" fwnested="0"
    -->
So it recognises Fireworks was the the graphics app and jumps
    back to it
when you want to edit the image. Fireworks then displays (or
    should) a
ŒDone¹ button over the window. You do your alts and
    press Done to update the
HTML and graphics back in Dreamweaver automatically.
That¹s the only table I was referring to Murray.

I have a Sony HVR-V1P, can i successfully capture and edit with Final Cut Pro X

My HVR-A1U was able to capture just fine.  The only issue I had is that it has mroe frequently than FCP 7 ever did find Timecode breaks and split my clip apart.  I never had breaks before, so while it is possible I had them on this latest tape, I think X is just more picky.  I mean heck, it found three in a one minute timeframe.  My A1U worked with X without me needing to adjsut any settings form how I had it setup for 7.

  • Why don't iMovie support native HDV capture and editing?

i would like to see iMovie HD 6 to support native HDV capture and edit. is it possible?

no, FCE-HD (what an abreviation!) uses the same trick as iM-HD, converting HiDef into AIC....
native HD is really more for the pros... yet! I think, the basic problem to be solved first is -r media, meaning, any HD/blue-ray-DVD-r disks, which make it possible for the average user to store his/her products.... but as far as I follow the discussion, right now the industry is caring more for commercial disks, and that HDMI "problem" (broadcasting can include a copyprotection, so no use of any HD/DVD HiDef recorders...!)... finally, we can record only our selfmade movies... maybe that's a little less joy...
actually, converting finished HDmovies into h264 with a high bitrate and storing that onto hd is the only realistic option........

  • Capturing and editing on my primary drive?

I have two-500GB drives in my new Macpro, and I do not see how I could ever fill up the drive with the OS and applications installed (seems kind of a waste). I have read that it is not recommended to capture and edit video on the drive that contains the os and applications, and it should be done on a secondary drive.
    1. What specifically is the problem with capturing and editing video on the primary drive?
    2. Will partitioning the drive with the OS and applications installed, and capturing to the separate partition make a difference?
    Thank you.

    1. OSX creates a great deal of disk activity. Not only is the disk trying to feed the OS and the application commands, it also hosts the System Cache where RAM overflow goes to live until needed.
Adding the demands of REAL TIME media spooling (read/write) to this really busy disk can overwhelm it - leading to dropped frames etc.
    2. Partitioning does not solve it. It is still one physical disk and subject to all the same demands as spelled out in #1 above. Partitioning may make some sense in organizing material but it will do nothing for system performance. Indeed, there is some evidence it will reduce realtime performance.
If you need more drive space, for fastest performance, get a PCI based esata card and add a series of external sata devices. FW800 drives will work quite well as well - especially for DV, HDV and uncompressed SD.
    good luck.

  • What app do I need to view/edit movies from Panasonic HDC SD90

I have this great camera and would like to import and edit in iMovie, but can't.  I did a google search and found some free software, but my Mac does not let me open because it is and unidentified developer.

You can import directly into iMovie from this camera. The easiest way is to remove the SDHC card and put it in a USB card reader. You can also attach the camera via USB. In this case the camera must be also hooked up to AC power (not batteries only.)
iMovie should see the camera, but if it does not, click FILE/Import from Camera.
The one gotcha is you need to record in HA mode (1920x1080 interlaced, 17 Mbps).
If you record in 60P, iMovie cannot import it.
If your existing footage is 60P, and you really need super smooth slow motion, you might consider Final Cut Pro X, which will import 60P no problem, and allow you to edit the slow motion.
If your existing footage is 60P and you would like to convert it to 30P to use in iMovie, try either ClipWrap or Voltaic HD and convert your AVCHD to Apple Intermediate Codec at 30P. This will then import into iMovie through FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.
If you are adventurous and would consider hacking iMovie, here is a blog post you can try at your own risk. I have not done this myself.

  • Importing and editing video from DSLRs onto iPad 2

    Hi,
I'm reading that it's not possible to import video direct from a DSLR (Nikon D7000 or Olympus Pen, for example) onto the iPad 2, and edit, then export.
    Is this the case?
I'd like to be able to work remotely, taking stills and video (with audio) that I can then edit on the iPad and upload.

  • Capture and Editing multiple shots simultaneously

Hello I know that I can capture multiple clips with BlackMagic DeckLink Quad. I can also edit multiple clips in Premiere with Multi-cam sequence. But is it possible, capture and cutting simultaneously?
    Thanks

    joe bloe premiere wrote:

Yes... on two different systems running two licensed copies of Premiere.
    Is that really true?
Most NLEs have issues with editing a file that isn't presented to them as closed, even if captured in a seperate instance of the same application.
EVS are hooked up with Adobe now to emulate their FCP workflow, whereby edit while capture is possible. (They also do this with Avid), but that isn't a cheap option, unless you have EVS servers knocking around ;-)
Gallery.co.uk have their PictureReady software, which would possibly work with CS6 (it presents a QT Ref file to the app that then 'fills in' as capture progresses).
ToolsOnAir offer some solutions in this regard, as do Telestream with Pipeline.
MOG also offered an edit while capture solution for Avid, that might work with CS6.
You'll likely be out there doing the alpha research of whatever you try out (other than the EVS stuff, which I'm sure has quite a bit of testing going on behind it - not sure it can replace all the EVS <--> FCP7 functionality yet though).
You'll also need some decent shared storage to be able to write and read simultaneously.
Having reread the question - the Blackmagic app should be able to do the capturing for you, rather than a seperate PPro instance, but I don't believe it will do the 'filling in' of a QT ref that would enable edit while capture. Still be good to be able to capture in the background and do 'stop/start' to close files so they can be edited with.
Also possible that you could use duplicated inputs on the BM Quad to do 'rolling edits' (i.e. so you don't miss anything when you break record).
Good luck if you try it...

  • Capture and import video from DVD

Just switched from PC to MAC. I have my travel videos on DVD's. In iMovie 08 how do I capture and import the video that's on the DVD into iMovie. I couldn't find any help on this topic.
    Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at Cinematize 2, I've used it with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
For the job you're doing you may prefer to use iMovie 06 instead of iMovie 08 (I would).
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Your workflow would go something like this.
Use Cinematize 2 to create a Quicktime file from the DVD.
Important that file into iMovie 06.
From iMovie 06, share to iDVD 08 (assuming you want a DVD).
