Capturing at 3/4 speed

Hey everyone i came home last night and logged some footage on the old Imovie and when i was logging the footage it was saying below the sound bar that it was capturing at 3/4 speed!
would this mean a reduced frame rate?
how do i set it to full speed?
many thanks!.

Looks like you never got this answered... I am having the same issue... Tried to Capture HDV 1080i from my Canon HV20 and I watched the capture rate fall down to 1/4 speed. Then it freezes... **** it jim! Anyway, I guess it is not data flow since you are on a Mac Pro. I am on a Dual 2gig G5 so.... I'm gathering from all that I have read that it is a software issue in Vers 7.1.1 and 7.1.2... Waiting to upgrade to iLife 09.

I AM IMPORTING VIDEO INTO IMOVIE HD AND OVER TOP THE CONTROLS IS SAYS WHEN PREVIEWING HD AT 1/4 SPEED AND WHEN I HIT IMPORT IT SAYS CAPTURING AT 1/4 SPEED. HOW CAN I CHANGE THIS TO PREVIEW AND CAPTURE AT NORMAL SPEED VERY FRUSTRATING,

Importing speed is related to your computer processor and what it can handle. Have a look at David Babsky's posts in this thread to see if this helps:

  • Capture Card for rendering speed vs. no card

Only having HDV firewire output from my camera,
can't really use a card for capture, but,
would a card (eg. Blackmagic HD Extreme) speed up the quicktime export from FCP6.?
currently 50 mins sequence takes 6 hours to output.
Speed up conforming to a diff sequence (eg. Prores)?
    speed up everything or anything?????

Not if you are limited to sending back out HDV. The reconforming process is slow (as you have experienced).
in the for what it's worth category, this is why it's takes time.
Sony's version of HDV is formated into a 15 frame GOP (group of pictures). Simply put, this means there is one full frame (I frame) then 14 frames that reference the differences to the full frame. These reference frames do not contain full information and only make sense when compared to the last I frame and any intervening frames.
When you make a cut in this GOP, the chances are you are NOT editing on an I frame, you are cutting somewhere between them. This means FCP must generate an internal I frame at that point. As you can imagine this is an editing nightmare. That FCP gets it to work is truely a bit of wizardry.
When you are all done, FCP must re-conform the the footage, that is, generate a continuous 15 frame GOP structure from the beginning of the footage. Some I frames become reference frames and new I frames must be generated in the correct pattern. This is very computationally intensive and is totally dependent on processor speed.
So, If you want to speed up output to HDV, get a faster machine.
    good luck,

  • Capturing at 1/4 speed

Why does my computer capture footage from my Canon HV20 at only 1/4 or 1/8 speed? Is this adjustable?

Your older computer doesn't have enough power to import any faster.
HD video takes a dual CPU machine at minimum to process in "real" time.
    Edit:
I posted at the same time as Lennart.
You will also have difficulty when it comes time to view your files. It takes a dual CPU machine to play anything over 480 HD dimensions without dropping frames during playback.

  • Capturing video at 3/4 speed in imovie HD.  Can you adjust capture speed?

I shot footage using the JVC HD100 at 24p. Even though FCP now handles it, it keeps aboring the capture. I tried using imovie HD, but it keep capturing at 3/4 speed. The audio plays normal, but the video is sped up. Is there a way I can change the setting in imovie HD to capture at a normal speed. My work around was to conform the video back to 23.98 in cinema tools, but this is too tedious for an entire movie. Can someone help? Is this a glitch in imovie?

iM is a consumer product, 24p is way out of its specs...
iMovie is a consumer video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders
so, 25/30fps, and HD via firewire, because HD content gets converted "on the fly" into Apple Intermediate Codec...
Is there a way ... to capture at a normal speed?
    yes, buy some 4GHz-quadcore-überMac.. ;-))

  • Imovie capture 3/4 speed???

I open a new project imovie dv 1080 all OK! but when i transfert image have a delay?
Have a message up the slide volume it to write this " HD Real time record and after Capture HD 3/4 Speed?? Have now a long delay??? Why.
I record with my Sony HD 1080 with a normal mini DV not mini HD do you think thats a problem??
    Michel

    Your machine is too underpowered.
You will not even be able to view 1080 files without a major loss of frames during playback.

  • Trouble capturing on final cut express hd and imovie

I am having trouble capturing media in fc express as well as imovie. my footage is HD. when I start to capture the media goes in normal for like 2 seconds, then it says that the capture is 95% behind(in fc express) or that it is capturing at 1/8 speed (imovie). even when i stop the capture in order to let it catch up to real time, the media freezes up so that i cant really view it. i dnt know what i am missing.Ive even tried to use a different firewire cable. any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply Tom. (BTW I'm not the original poster.)
You are correct- It is a USB drive formatted FAT 32 . After my original post, I erased the drive and started over with a clean slate. This was successful for tape one (about 60 minutes). About twenty minutes into tape two though, it was deja vu all over again. FC froze, I force quit, and lost all of what I had captured from tape one in the process. I unsuccessfully tried to recapture tape one. Same problem again.
Although this is the first time I've tried to capture through FC onto an external drive, I've got three other USB drives full of video I've captured from VHS with the same computer through a DV encoder. When you say USB is not supported by Apple for video applications, does that mean video editing applications? As for complete information, apologies but I'm not exactly sure what other info. you mean. Please let me know. Thanks again. I appreciate the time.

  • HDV capture card

I'm looking for a capture card that support HDV camcorders, for G5.
But it seems that doesn't exist any card: I found only HD or SD capture cards.
The only HDV capture card that is able to native editing hdv video in realtime from hdv camcorders is the canopus EDIUS NX (and canopus velxus 300 in Japan); but the problem is that canopus hdv card is only for PC.
I called canopus and they said me that these cards will be for MAC when Apple will release the new powermac intel-based.
So I read in the apple FCP 5 HD page this:
    "Native HDV Support
Final Cut Pro 5 supports native long-GOP MPEG-2 editing for working with camera-original HDV video. Unlike other solutions, Final Cut Pro 5 acquires HDV media via FireWire and keeps it in the original format, transferring it into the system without any generation loss. Output via FireWire back to an HDV camera or deck, or transfer your native HDV to DVD Studio Pro 4 for an end-to-end native HDV workflow."
I know that it is not possible capture a video by firewire from a camcorder without further compressing it. I know that it is for this reason that pro use capture cards (that have dedicated processors for this).
So I think that there aren't HDV capture cards for mac because the hardware companies don't make new cards for only few months, so they're waiting the new intel-based macs. If so, this firewire technology of final cut pro 5 is a compromise for these last times, or is it really like the capture-card processing? and if so, how is it possible capturing a hdv video by firewire without further compressing it?
Do you know about a HDV card for MAC or is it really good using Final Cut Pro HD 5 with firewire ?
    Thank you.

It all depends on what type of work you are doing...
Capture Cards are for use with other formats that cannot be captured via firewire: BetaSP, Digibeta, HDCAM, D5. They are also require for outputting to these formats.
Not many broadcast facilities will take a DVCAM master...some will, but most won't. And depending on your client, they may or may not take an HDV master. They may want an HDCAM or D5 master if they are producing HD content. For that you need a capture card and high speed drive RAIDS.
Why do other pricier systems come with capture cards? Because they are sold that way. FCP, out of the box, is ready to edit DV, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD and HDV...FULL RESOLUTION...no compression. Any need to do higher end requires a capture card.

  • Speeding up imported .mov clips

Apple has given me a great tool to use for creating tutorials, not only to share but also to burn as a pretty solid DVD.
That said I will describe what I am doing and what I would like to do.
    1) I am using SnapzPro with iMovie '08 to make tutorial videos that I am sharing from .mac,
and later aspire to make full on DVD's from.
    2) I have sucessfully imported, edited, voiced over, and shared this clips with only one minor detail.
What i wish to do is speed up some of the clips when playing back. Does anyone know how to do this? Because, it seems like apple while simplifying the app, they've taken out even more edit controls from iMovie, where I might actually have to purchase FC express to achieve what I want to do.
-One thing I tried, and failed at, was taking the movies into QT pro, and speeding up the playback time, but when imported into iMovie, it strips that setting and plays back at normal speed.
Because of the length of the capture, I want to speed up playback, and then transition to highlight points of the film, is there a way to do this in '08?

    Thanks for the tip,
I guess what i am going to try is, importing the clips into FCP 5 and see if I can speed them up and add my transitions there. FCP is one app I have to learn all over again every time I use it, but one I edit there I guess try and reintroduce the clips into imovie and see how that goes..

  • Capture HDV without Final Cut?

I am on a shoot in a country that is known for confiscating tapes. Therefore, I need to have a backup of everything I shoot. Unfortunately, my plan of using a Firestore FS-4 failed when it broke 4 days into my shoot. My Mac does not have Final Cut on it and I can't find a way to download it. Is there any way to capture HDV with a program other than Final Cut?

    Sorry no.
I am surprised when you say iMovie captures at 1/8 speed.
I haven't tried it with AIC but I have tested FCE and my iMac was able to capture in realtime.
I can't see why iMovie should be so slow. Even if you have a very old, slow computer it shouldn't take more than 30% longer than realtime.
Have you been using iMovie 08? The much more "professional" iMovie 06 can be downloaded free here:-

  • Captured footage seems to play fast forward

I just got a new imac and it has firewire 800 (1 port) I added a kramer vs-30fw to add 3ports I have ext drive and camera hooked to it. FCP recognizes camera log and capture plays at normal speed but when I play it after captured it either doesn't capture every frame or it plays at a faster speed. What am I doing wrong. Thanks for your help!

    What Tom said (about himself)
You really think the hub is an issue? More than the chattiness of FW? He only has the one connection. He'll have issues getting footage in via the camera unless he has a FW drive with multiple I/O, which is what I recommend anyway.
I just added an external eSata port to the Mac Pro. Getting some spotty results.

  • Capture network details

    hi,
i am using OAS 9.0.4 and java for my project.
i want to capture details to know speed of application pages, the frequency wehn user i able to quickly view/takes time to view page..
This required as many users will be connecting from remote areas and they complain about application access being slow.
to debug such network issues what could be the best way??
are there any API's to capture which user has logged in, what is the login time, network details:ipadress of the user's machine:any other specific info for network etc.
asktom.oracle.com site has such features how can i go about it??
    regards,
    Avinash

Here's a start. I use it to get the network userid for the user running forms.
    first, create a function:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION "your_schema_name"."OS_USER" return
    varchar2 is begin
    Return sys_context('USERENV','os_user');
    End;
Then, in your trigger code or wherever,
    Declare
    network_userid varchar2(30);
    begin
    select os_user into network_userid from dual;
    end
Consult the Oracle data dictionary views. There's probably something in there that will get you most of what you're after.

  • What is the best format for a new video editing hard drive?

    Hello,
I would like to know how to properly format a new 2 TB Hitachi hard drive that I have for my early 2008 Mac Pro that will be installed in drive slot 3. Information at the following link explains that:
"Journaling is essential for OS disks (boot drives), but for disks used for video media, used for editing purposes, Journaling is not advised, as it can affect the speed of data being written. For video media (scratch) drives you would want to select the Mac OS Extended, no journaling."
"Journaling only affects the speed of either writing to or modifying a file, it has no effect on the read speed of files. If you're writing a lot of data, for for a long period of time, like capturing video, the write speed of the data will slow down, as the Journaling record keeps updating it's self."
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/formatting_hd_macstone.html
My question is, is this information legit and should I format my new hard drive using Mac OS Extended? I will be using it solely for the purpose of reading and writing HDV and AVCHD video files using Final Cut Pro 7.
    Thanks
    Tom

    Hi there,
Ive always followed the idea that journalling is turned off, so I would follow the advice given and turn journalling off.
In addition I would also make that drive "private" to spotlight so it doesn't search or catalogue there.
If its of interest, I've always formatted my drives in the following way
    make 2 partitions,
partition 1 - make this about 10% of the drives capacity and label DO NOT USE
partition 2 - make this the remainder of the capacity
the reason being (So Im told by the drive gurus) is that the first sector contains the volumes boot block - this can get corrupted/damaged so having it partitioned like this means you can erase it safely whilst keeping your media.
Ive followed this for years and it has worked on the few occasions a drive has misbehaved.
    cheers
    Andy

  • Error -50 when opening a jpeg

Try to open a jpeg saved in Image Capture and or Preview , or a .mov file and I get "error -50" with QT 7.0.3.
I also get an "error -30" message at the same time, saying it can't open a different .mov file..a file I've never seen, heard of and neither has Spotlight, and seems to not be on this computer, and am not trying to open.
This is a month old installation of 10.4.3.
The .mov file I do have is a sound file that goes with a picture/jpeg...the sound file does not play when I open the jpeg in Preview.(Is that a bug or a feature?) Try to open with QT and I get an "error-30" message.
Try to open the same movie in Real Player and it says it can't play the movie with this version of QT. I see an update is available for RealPlayer, from the current 10.0.0
(It may be relevant or not that iPhoto5 will not import anything (another topic I know) whether from a camera that it's happy with (C7000 Olympus) or a jpeg saved and or imported with Preview and Image Capture. The age/speed of the computer hasn't mattered in the past with iPhoto 4 and 5...slow but steady until now.)(somewhere I did read the iPhoto5 req'd a minimum 400mhz G3 processor...but it has worked before. The installer installed it..three times now.
Now try to import a jpeg and I get a thumbnail and the info, but then just a box saying "the file doesn't contain data" etc...these jpegs were just imported with Image Capture, or saved in Preview, and iPhoto displays the thumbnail but gives the message that there is no data in the file.)(I will put this possibly related question/topic in the iPhoto discussion area as well.)
I hope this is an easy answer and I'm a dummie...thanks.

The "default" open with application for .m4v should be iTunes (not QuickTime Player).
    Do you have it installed?
You should be able to "force" QuickTime Player to open the file by dragging the file icon unto the Player icon, using the File menu Open and navigate or right clicking on the icon and changing the default open with application.

I have just installed the RAW Support update that is meant to provide support for the 400D/XTi/Kiss Digital X. I bought my camera in Japan, so I have the Kiss Digital X.
