Capturing audio speeches & importing into iTunes

I work with a small non-profit, and we often host forums, etc with guest speakers. I would like to record the speakers talks, import them into an iTunes library, and then be able to burn CDs of them for members who couldn't attend. Any suggestions on how to best do this? Thanks, Jeff.

Hi Jeff,
I would say it depends on what hardware you already have and what you're willing to purchase. If you have an iPod, there are a number of microphones you can use, available at the Apple iPod Store or elsewhere. They should come with all the software needed and instructions on how to get your audio recordings into iTunes, then you'll be able to burn them as usual.
If you have or plan to purchase a digital or cassette recorder, then you'll also need to go into say RadioShack or Fry's and get the appropriate mini-plug to mini-plug adapter, just take your recorder with you and get somebody to assist you in finding the right cable to connect to your PC/Mac. Then you'll need audio capturing software, for Mac I highly recommend Audacity, it's a great, powerful sound editor that's free, can't beat that deal. For PC, there should be tons of sound editors that let you capture audio coming into the Line-in port, I don't have one that I use as all the audio I do on my Mac, but you should be able to find a good one in the usual places (download.com, tucows).
You'd have to record your speeches by clicking record in your sound editing software, then pushing play on your hand recorder, when finished, stop the recorder, then click to stop capture on the computer. You can save the resulting file (or sometimes you'll "export" rather than save) to an iTunes friendly format (MP3, WAV, AAC, AIFF on Mac, WMA on Windows), then import the files into iTunes and voila.
Hope that helps!

  • Audio Books Import into ITUNES

I received an audio book (9cds) and wanted to import into ITUNES. The cd's did transfer to ITUNES but came over as if it were a music file and didn't go to the audiobooks portion of the ipod.
Don't tell me the only way to get an audiobook on your IPOD is to buy it from ITUNES??
    Help!

Only audiobooks from ITMS, audible.com and AAC files with m4b extensions (applescripts for mac) show up in audiobook main menu, skip in main menu shuffle, and allow faster/slower/normal playback speed.

  • Anyone know how I can get an audio file imported into my iTunes' podcast directory, rather than the music directory?

Anyone know how I can get an audio file imported into my iTunes' podcast directory, rather than the music directory?
I downloaded a series of podcasts recently.  They were imported into my "music" directory instead, making it more difficult for me to recall where I left off with the last podcast I listened to before having to stop it for whatever reason.  Thanks in advance for any help.

You can do it, though the result isn't ideal. Import your episode, then select it in the Music list and hit command-i to bring up the info panel:
However each episode you do this with will turn up as a 'podcast' with no name - and it doesn't seem possible to give it one - containing the one episode:

  • I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise.

I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise. I have seen lots of old posts which go on about converting files but am wondering wherher at the current time with the latest versions of itunes and apple tv whether this should by now be a virtual play out of the box solution.
I have tried connecting my atv to the amp by optical cable but that didnt produce anything better and am assuming that a hdmi cable should be able to reproduce everything an optical cable does.
Is this something I should be able to achieve without having to recode the files?
Tracks are imported to itunes as apple lossless, have tried setting the atv audio settings to auto and 16 bit, neither works yet I was told some time ago by an apple rep that the atv shoud be able to handle any type of audio as it just passes it to the amp to decode. I am not stupid but not that technical when it comes to audio and bitrates etc so any explaination would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.

  • My music is on a nas loaded by Windows Media Player in WAV. When I import into Itunes only the songs appear no album name etc.

My music is on a nas. Loaded using windows media player in WAV.
When I import into Itunes only the record apears, no Album name etc
How can can I see all the details

Information is often stored as tags embedded in the file.  WAV does not support tagging. I don't know how WMP works but iTunes keeps its own database about media.  For many audio formats, track information will be stored both in iTunes' database and in the file itself as tags.  With formats such as mp3 most tags (not all) will 'travel' with the file when copied.  This does not happen with WAV where the information is only stored in the player application's database.

  • HT1473 It seems like many commercial music CDs won't import into iTunes (copy protection?), so you can only play them from the disc, not your other devices. Am I missing something?

More and more commercial music CDs won't seem to import into iTunes - they just spin, falter, and spit out. I would think I had a setting wrong except older CDs load with no problem. I'm guessing there's copy protection on the newer ones, which seems unfair if you want to, say, buy a CD that has bonus material not available via iTunes (and then have to buy the regular material again on iTunes). Is there a way around this? An easy fix so I can keep buying CDs when I want to? I know it's a technology that's on the way out, but it's not gone yet.

Audio CD copy protection is relatively rare. I doubt its use is on the increase as it would be just one more nail in CD's coffin. On the few occasions I've bought CDs that won't rip I've gone straight back to the store for a refund. If the drive is attempting to read at max. speed it might help to force it to read slower (if indeed you have that as an option) and it may help to switch the error correction mode.

  • Getting protected wma files to import into itunes

i have a couple of wma files that are protected and will not import into itunes because of the protected content. is there any way around this?

If you are able to burn those protected files to an audio CD, then that audio CD will act like any CD that you would purchase in your local store.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • What audio format encoded into iTunes HD Movies and TV shows?

What audio format encoded into iTunes HD Movies and TV shows, AC3, 5.1 DolbyDigital? Its been a long long while since I rented an HD movie on ATV since netflix came around with streaming and BD. Now they have rentals and purchases. Anyone know if the purchases play with 5.1 or better audio?

I think if you pull up the movie in the iTunes store it should tell you. For example, I pulled up the Star Trek movie that came out a few months ago, and it reports "Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound". Clearly you need to make sure that your hardware supports whatever sound configuration the movie employs.

  • How do I get audio back on single clip that loses audio when imported into Premiere Pro CC?

I've got one clip out of many that for some reason won't play any audio when imported into Premiere Pro.  I am new to Premiere Pro so am hoping it's something stupid I've done, but this is a problem with just a single clip exported the same way as all my others, the original audio is loud (not quiet) and none of the FAQ issues seem to apply (ie I haven't muted the audio or anything stupid like that)
The clip was exported from Plural Eyes into a "master" Premiere Pro project where the audio is fine. I exported it as a short MP4 clip and if I play the clip in Windows Media Player the audio is there loud and clear.
But when I import the clip into a fresh Preimiere Pro CC project this clip appears with just the "film strip" icon on the far left in the Timeline panel, unlike other clips which have an icon that shows "film strip" in the background and "audio wave" in the foreground.
I'm hitting so many glitches with the CC editions of Premiere Pro and After Effects which have annoying inconsistencies between them I'm tempted to just go back to Sony Vegas Pro (single program, no hassle) but hoping most of these issues are down to "newbie incompetence". Very hard to understand why this one clip out of many should be giving me this specific problem though. Any ideas?

I'm getting so many weird results. Most go away by simply closing the project and re-opening and I only have 6GB memory but even so, I'm disappointed by what I thought was supposed to be more "world class" video editing software than Sony Vegas Pro which I found to be a lot more stable. Also struggling with differences between Premiere and After Effects. Every time I want to do something in Pro I seem to need to go to After Effects and vice-versa. After Effects lets me do more of what I could "just do" in Vegas Pro timeline, but it's hideous for lining up audio and having to render anything in RAM to even get a clue as to what a change has done.  Need to add Audition to the long list as well I suspect. Fun times!

  • Movie import into iTunes library

    Hi all,
I have a very large collection of DVDs - it's one of the first technologies I actually got into early...I'm usually late to the game, so to speak.
Anyway, given that I'm moving everything to a digital format for use on my plethora of Macs and Apple TVs, I thought I'd use something like HandBrake to rip my discs and import into iTunes.
Is this is preferrable or common method?  Is there some better way?
Secondarily, any way to get content info (Get Info stuff) that is similar to what you see when you purchase a movie from iTunes?  I'm thinking about rating stuff, brief plot, etc.
As always, thanks for your collective genius.

  • ONE song wont import into iTunes?

Okay, so i have a trance mix that i want to import into iTunes. For some reason this song is the only one that won't import? It opens winamp and windows media player 10 but itunes just doesnt do anything when i try to play it. I've tried importing the whole folder, file, add a file, right click and open with iTunes program....nothing seems to work? Any help?

It is probably a WMA protected file. These are files that will run on windows and some other platforms but it is not supported by iTunes. I had the same problem and was very frustrated because it was one of my favorites, i purchased it from the Wal-Mart site and they use the wma format. Was just out of luck on that song!
