Capturing audio & video at different rates

I have a Panasonic PV-GS700 camcorder, and use primarily Sony DVC Premium mini-DV tapes. For as long as I can remember, when I capture a long section of tape (maybe the entire hour), I wind up with a clip whose audio and video are at slightly different speeds, getting more and more out of sync the longer the clip.
I spend a ridiculous amount of my editing time meticulously adjusting the speed of the video, and it doesn't always seem to be off by the same factor.
My capture settings are usually Firewire NTSC / DV NTSC 48 kHz but sometimes I have changed to "Noncontrollable Device" if I am capturing an entire tape and I don't want to get hung up on capture errors. The firewire cable is normally routed through a firewire hub, but I have also observed the same problem when it is connected directly to the computer.
I'm curious:
1. if there is some setting I can change to fix this problem with audio & video capturing at different speeds?
2. is it likely to be a problem with my camcorder or the software? Are there decks that just handle playback of mini-DV tapes and work reliably with Final Cut Pro?

The camera says 16-bit in playback.
When I'm playing the tape from the camera and watching the viewscreen, the audio & video are in sync; it's only the captured DV file that runs at different speeds.
At this point, I'm considering a newer camcorder which shoots in HD and saves to a hard drive or SD card, such as a Canon VIXIA HF200. Would such a audio/video sync problem even be possible with that sort of camcorder?
(PS: If you were anyone other than Tom Wolsky, I would definitely be dubious that there is any part of my camcorder called a "timing crystal"... it sounds like cheezy sci-fi or Napoleon Dynamite )

  • Is there a way to CAPTURE audio/video off the net then run it m.m. prsntn

    I'm fairly new to the mac genre. In windows we had apps like Camtasia to
    capture audio/video off the net. I was hoping something like that would
    be avail for the mac and then once capture it how would I edit it and
    include it in a presentation software; for example, keynote?
    Is there added hardware req'd (?Capture board)? what would be a good software mac
    compatible?

    I'd like to capture audio and video for example sometimes just need to capture the
    audio if some instruction is coming say over a quicktime or media player for my work.
    Then sometimes I need to capture the audio and video when they ware actually showing me
    charts and explaining them things like that.
    is snap Z the way to go then for quality and fair pricing to get good results.
    Do we have any resident applications already on the ilife variety that could be utilized for

  • FCE4 Capturing Audio/Video Out of Synch

    I run a school video lab and all of a sudden we have started to have major isues capturing HD video from our Canon Vixia cameras (both 30s and 40s). The audio and video is out of synch and I cannot figure out why. We are on iMacs running OS10.5 or above and capturing through firewire 800 cables.
    Our only salvation has been to capture through iMovie and then edit the footage in FCE.
    Any thoughts?

  • Hi8 capture audio/video problem

    I have a Sony TRV740 that will capture my Hi8 movies through Firewire but iMovie will drop the audio every half second or so and when I play the video back it plays at twice the normal speed. Any suggestions?

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    No, but I can use Google.
    Don't use DV NTSC Basic. Use regular DV NTSC, unless your audio is 32k, in which you'll have to make a 32k DV NTSC preset. There might be a problem with the FW800 connector. Quite a few people are reporting problems with these cables. Definitely use the rear FireWire port. Do you have any other devices connected?

  • Play audio samples in different rates

    I need to play samples from differents rate, I'm working about speech and most of the time, the rate of the file is 16000Hz, the sound VI from National instrument don't allow a rate different from 8000, 11025, 22050 and 44100...
    Maybe, It could be possible to change the DLL "lvsound.dll" include by National instrument but I haven't the source code.
    I also have the same problem for recording speech.
    Thanks for your help

    Under windows 98 or 2000, you can do the following to play the rates not supported by the NI lvsound.dll. Use activX container, select Windows Media Player (v 6.4 and above). Pass the complete path of the wavefile you want to play to the property node and enable the play action. Oh, you can not only play sound files but also media files supported by the WMP. The NI's write to sound vi can be modified to write wave files with any rates.
    I haven't tried the recording side so I don't know it works or not.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Capturing audio video

    How can i capture video images and sounds from a camera and microphone to do video coferencing. Can any any one help me out.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    You can try a package named: JTwain, which is available at http://asprise.com/product/jtwain.
    JTwain supports all kinds of digital cameras and scanners. You can use Java to access, contorl digital cameras and scanners, and of course, to acquire images with flexible settings.
    The developers' guide is available @ http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/devGuide.php
    In the simplest case, one line of Java code can solve your problem.
    Good luck!

  • Variable bitrate while capturing audio although rate is set in player URL

    Hello.
    I'm building an application that requires me to calculate the time between to amplitude peaks in an audio stream recorded on the spot using JSR-135. To calculate the time difference I figured I could simply count how many samples that were sampled between the amplitude peaks. To do this I need to know how many samples per second the audio was recorded in. I thought that setting the rate parameter in the player URL (capture://audio?encoding=pcm&rate=*8000*&bits=8&channels=1) would do this, but when I commit the RecordControl I don't always get the same amount of bytes even though I always record for the same amount of time. I use the following code to record the audio stream:
    Player player = Manager.createPlayer("capture://audio?encoding=pcm&rate=8000&bits=8&channels=1");
    player.realize();
    RecordControl recordControl = (RecordControl) player.getControl("RecordControl");
    ByteArrayOutputStream outputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    recordControl.setRecordStream(outputStream);
    recordControl.startRecord();
    player.start();
    Thread.sleep(1000); // Record for one second
    recordControl.stopRecord();
    recordControl.commit();
    player.stop();
    player.deallocate();
    System.out.println(outputStream.toByteArray().length + " samples");Running the code four times gave me four different bitrates, or length of returned byte array; 8724, 8476, 7044 and 8972. Why is this? What have I missed?
    Kind Regards.

    or am i wrong???
    i have given same ports.......i had tried once with diff. ports........miraculously perhaps it worked (the sound was echoed through my headphone),....but next time when i tried i failed......and still failing........any suggestions please waiting eagerly

  • J2ME MMAPI: capture audio in AMR with given bitrate

    Colleagues,
    I'm facing issue while trying to record audio in AMR. While I successfully record audio in AMR 12.2 kbps I can not change the bitrate. It is always 12.2 kbps regardless of what I specify in media locator string.
    Could anybody help me to figure out what parameters should I specify to record audio, for example, in AMR 4.75 kbps?
    Thank you in advance.

    The code is:
    String uri = "capture://audio?encoding=amr&rate=8000&bits=16";
    // Get player object
    _player = Manager.createPlayer(uri);
    _player.realize();
    // Get Record Control to be able to record audio
    RecordControl  rc = (RecordControl)_player.getControl("RecordControl");
    // Set destination file
    rc.setRecordLocation(rec_file);
    // Begin recording from standard input
    rc.startRecord();
    // Transfer audio from microphone to standard input
    _player.start();Actually AMR bitrate depends on the size of frame which repeats each 20 ms. For 4.75 kbit/s frame is 95 bits long.
    I'm not sure how to specify this by 'rate' and 'bits' parameters. I already tried some combinations but in vain. The default for my Motorola Z3 is 12.2 kbit/s. Maybe it even does not support capturing in other bit rates (I'm not sure), though it is able to play AMR files of other bit rates.
    Maybe you can point me to the emulator which supports AMR capturing in different bit rates?
    Thank you for interest in my question.

  • Trying To Draw The Wav Form of captured audio

    hi all , im trying to get into audio proccessing at j2me platform
    as a start , i made an application that records audio through the phones microhone and after that drawing the bytearray with its wave form on the canvas.
    i used the following capture encoding:
    "capture://audio?encoding=pcm&rate=8000&bits=8&channels=1"
    the application worked great on the emulators...
    after i tried the application on my mobile (motorola E-1000)
    i realized that my mobile does not support PCM encoding as for audio capturing the device only supports AMR to capture audio :|
    so my question what am i suppose to do to draw the WAveForm of the recorded audio if its stored in bytearray encoded as AMR??
    do i need to convert it to wav?
    is there any other techinque?
    any info will be highly welcome!
    thanks in advance.

    Did u manage to draw waveform of amr file? I've the same task and i 've the same questions: "do i need to convert it to wav? is there any other techinque?"

  • Capture audio only selected

    When I capture, I only get the audio but not the video. On the capture screen, it is indeed written "Video Preview Deactivated" and "Capture Only Audio selected". So result seems in line with some settings but which one ? How can I change this?
    This is my first FCE (4.0.1) project. I made a first test and I could capture audio and video without any problem and then suddenly I could not capture audio&video together. My video is Sony HDR-HC9 but I made a test on my MacBookPro and also captured audio & video together without any problem, so it is not linked to the video.
    I compared Easy config (DV-PAL), User settings, System settings between MacPro and MacBookPro and were identical ! I'm getting completey lost. Is there any Capture settings menu?
    Thanks in advance for your support,
    François.

    "Is there any Capture settings menu?"
    Yes. Easy Setups.
    First, identify the specs of the footage the camera shoots for both video and audio.
    Video properties like DV, Anamorphic(16:9)etc. need to match.
    Cameras shoot in 12 or 16 bit audio that matches 32 or 48 kHz Easy Setups respectively.
    Once the correct Easy Setup is selected and saved for the Sequence, then, you can capture with those settings applied.

  • Capture Audio via Digital in Port?

    This seems like a basic issue, but I can't find the answer - Is there a way to set my audio capture / input to come in via the Digital in port (TOSLINK, S/PDIF)? I'd like to do this separately from the video capture input. I've found connection information in the FCP documentation, but haven't been able to figure out the settings in the software.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the info. So, just to be clear I'll have to run the source twice, once to capture using one of the audio apps and once in FCP to capture the video? I won't be able to capture audio / video at the same time using FCP (audio from the Digital in port and Video from my BlackMagic card)?

    Hi
    MMAPI JSR (135) latest documentation , explains a way to capture audio from microphone in various formats , am able to save it in pcm format but gsm or ulaw gives error.
    encoding="pcm / gsm / ulaw " of which pcm is default , But upon specifying gsm or ulaw as parameters , I get a runtime error in class WavCapture , I decompiled this class to see it clearly dosent support gsm and ulaw inside

    Then why does the documentation says about gsm / ulaw
    Would really appretiate for any tips .

    I get an error if I try to do any kind of settings to capture://audio like this:
    player = Manager.createPlayer("capture://audio?encoding=pcm&rate=8000&bits=8&channels=1");
    It just does not accept it at run time. I even upgraded my system to XP and still does not see it.
    Without settings like this (capture://audio), I am able go through start record, stop record, commit, and saving to RMS. I am writing to ByteArrayOutputStream. I don't think I am capturing anything from the microphone. Because the size of the array is 0.
    I appreciate any thoughts or feedback on this one.

  • Capture Audio and Video to different disks or not?

    I thought that capturing audio and video to separate disks was more efficient, now I see in the FCS 2 documentation it says that this is not recommended for any of the DV formats. But it does not say why, or what the consequences of doing this are...
    Does anyone out there know?
    Thanks,
    Pete d.

    Peter Durso wrote:
    Now, Is there any value in putting the render files on a drive that is separate from the Capture disks?
    Pete D.
    Absolutely. Listen to your drives while doing an intense render. The Capture drive is grabbing all of the video clips in the stack, the system drive is grabbing software. If you render to the Capture drive, that same drive has to write, too. Reduce the load by using a Render drive.
    I have four drives: System, Capture, Render, Output. The last is used for all exports, encodes, and transcodes.

  • Capturing-audio sample rate

    I have fce hd v 3.5. My camera is a sony dcr-trv11. I am trying to "capture now" but it looks like I am dropping frames. When i hit "esc" it stops capture of course, but I get a message that reads "the audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the video ans audio of these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the audio sample rate of your capture preset matches the sample rate of your tape." Okay, so how do I do that? When I originally captured my footage with imovie I had no problems. I had trouble importing them to FCE so I scrapped them all and decided to start from scratch with FCE. I have 199.5 GB of free space.

    Most miniDV cameras can be set to record audio as 12-bit or 16-bit; and most of them come set to 12-bit as the default.
    Your preset (easy setup) in FCE has to match both the video & audio setup of your camera. Normally, you would select the DV-NTSC easy setup in FCE, which would give you a sequence that expects DV-NTSC video and 16-bit (aka 48KHz) audio. If your video was recorded as 12-bit (aka 32KHz) audio, but you captured into a 16-bit (48KHz) sequence in FCE, that would give you the mismatch.
    Check your camera - if it was set to 12 bit audio for the tape you are trying to capture, then in FCE you should select the DV-NTSC 32KHz easy setup for your sequence before you capture your tape.
    There are many different reasons you might be getting dropped frames - can you tell us more about your exact setup, esp. if you have an external HD connected to your system. Oh, and by the way, 512MB is the bare minimum to run FCE, you will find things much better overall if you upgrade to at least 1GB.
