Capturing AVCHD video from a Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder to FCE 4.01

Video captured at the highest resolution MXP i60 seems to stutter after importing to FCE 4.01. I know that playback on a computer monitor will show these signs but after burning with iDVD and played on a TV set, it still is jerky when panning a moving image.
I've read most of the posts concerning this. I have read that FCE will only accept 29.97 frame rates in several posts and other posts show "i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97 frame rates".
I read where I should reset my FCE preferences but I don't seem to have any. I looked in Library Preferences and could not find a "com.apple.finalcutexpress.plist" or the "final Cut Express User Data" folder.
Sure could use some help from those who use that camcorder and FCE.

I also shoot and edit with the HG21 but haven't experienced any such problems. Do your sequence settings match your clip settings in every regard? You definitely shot in 60i and not 30p? Did you fully render your sequence before exporting?
I've found there's a lot of interlacing when panning quickly, but it hasn't been jerky for me. Does it appear this way on the camera too? It may have been that you did not pan smoothly enough (such as with a good tripod).

How do I import video from my canon vixia hv 40 into imovie?

First decide which editing program you intend to use; iMovie, FCE, FCP, Adobe Premier, etc. Read the user's manual or Help files for your chosen application to determine the steps needed: the procedure will vary somewhat from application to application.
Next, with the camera and the computer off, connect the Firewire cable to both units, then power up. Set the camera to VTR (play) mode. Open your editing program and follow the instructions provided in the Help files for capturing DV footage from tape.
Do NOT expect the camera to mount on your desktop as if it were a hard drive or optical disc.

  • How do I extract video from my Canon Vixia HF M30 to my ipad2?

I'm having a difficult time trying to extract video from my canon HF m30 camcorder to my iPad2. Tried sd card and direct USB connect. Also downloaded iMovie but that didn't help either. Are these 2 compatible? Help please

    Copied from this link.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format.
I believe your camcorder records video in AVCHD format. If so, you will need to import the video with your computer and use a conversion utility to convert the video into a compatible format for transfer to your iPad.

  • How do I export video from a Canon Optura 30 camcorder to my iMac/ iMovies? I've tried a Firewire cable but imovies doesn't seem to recognise the camcorder.

I've been trying to export video from my Canon Optura 30 camcorder to imovies with a firewire lead, however nothing happens and imovies doesn't semm to reconise the camcorder. Can anyone help please?

Here is a compatibility chart for iMovie:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
I did not see yours; however, as long as it has firewire, it should work. Did you read the instructions in both your camcorder manual and in iMovie on the steps needed?
If you can't get it to work after following the steps, what format does it record in? Is it on a memory card? If so, it'd be easy: just use a USB card reader, plug it in and import your footage that way.

  • IMovie "does not see" videos from my Canon Vixia HF M32 and shuts down. Any ideas?

Lately, I have not been able to download videos as I used to from my Canon Vixia HF M32. My iMovie would not see the camera and would often close unexpectedly. It then gives an incomprehensible error message. I have no idea why this is happening or what to do. I was able to dowload some videos using a pc and a different software. Any clue?
    Thanks

iMovie HD (version 5 and 6) works only with Firewire cameras, DV or HDV.
Footage from other types of cameras can be converted for use. Try VoltaicHD and convert to Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i or 720p) for HD footage or DV for SD (Standard Definition) footage.
If all you want to do is creating a DVD, go for SD footage in the DV format. A DVD is always SD.

  • How can I download video from a Canon Vixia HF M30?

I just purchased a Canon Vixia HF M30. The salesman said I could download into iMovie, but nothing on the instructions say anything about Mac, only Windows. And the cable that connects the camcorder to USB has a message attached to it that says, “STOP! Be sure to install the software from the enclosed CD-ROM before connecting the video camcorder to your computer with this cable.” But the software is Pixela, only for Windows! Solution? (By the way, I have MPEG Streamclip and other converters if that is helpful...)

You don't need to install any software, all you need to do is insert either the SD card or connect the camcorder. I have the same camcorder and what I love most is its solid integration with Mac. My last camcorder did not integrate with FCE but did with iMovie.
These methods work with iMovie and FCE/FCP
    Insert SD Card:
    1. Just plug it in to the built in port or with a USB adapter.
    2. Open the iMovie capture screen or the FC Log and transfer.
    3. Select the clips you want and import them.
    4. Your done.
    USB Cable Method:
    1. Plug the respective ends into the camcorder and the computer.
    2. Put the camcorder into playback mode and select the Computer option.
    3. Open the respective capture tools that were mentioned in the previous method.
    4. Import the clips you want.
    5. Your done.
Hopefully I was some help. The M30 is a great camcorder.

    Best,

  • CPI file HELP!!!  I have a huge problem.  I just discovered that the files that have been downloaded from my Canon VIXIA HF100 camcorder are all ".cpi" files.  The worst part is that the files were erased from the memory card and camera.  HELP!

So basically I cannot redownload any of the files (which are all my daughter's videos from birth through age 2) and am stuck with just the CPI versions.  Is there a way to convert them?  If not, are there any programs that will play CPI files?  I had downloaded a free player a few months ago, but now I cannot find anything anywhere.  PLEASE HELP!  Thanks!

CPI files were originally a proprietory Sony format. You can read more about that here, including details of the applications that can convert them:

  • I can no longer import videos from my canon vixia HFS100 into imovie 09

I have had my canon HFS100 for about 6 months. It is listed in the camcorders supported by imovie 09. It worked great but after the last imovie update the camcorder is no longer recognized by imovie. APPLE please fix this bug now!!!! It worked before the update now it doesn't ***. APPLE support please respond to my post with a status on what to do. I see many post about this similar problem.

I strongly believe your AVCHD file structure is corrupt. Or at least no longer compatible with iMovies understanding of how the structure should be. The camera will continue to work, but iMovie will no longer recognise it. I dont think this is a bug in imovie, iMovie is just not user-friendly in this respect, as it does not to tell the user about the problem.

After salvaging your footage, you should re-format your memory card to make iMovie accept it again.

  • Need help transferring files from my canon vixia hg21 to final cut express!

I can't seem to get my camera or its files to show up on the FCE log and transfer window. If anyone knows of a way to get this to work i would greatly appreciate it!!!. also, I have already tried converting files to get them to be an agreeable format for FCE but the end result is always low quality.

    HI -
Log and Transfer only works with HD material, so make sure you shot in the HD mode.
Also, some times if there are multiple file formats on the same camera storage, like HD clips, SD clips and still images, this can prevent Log and Transfer from working properly. If that is the case, see if you can off load and delete all the non-HD material from the camera storage so that only HD material is there.
    Then:
    Open FCE.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Close Log and Transfer and close FCE.
Now connect your camera via USB with the camera on, open FCE and then open Log and Transfer and see if the window populates with clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?
    Thank you,
    David

  • What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

Rather than convert, you'd be better off capturing with a more current version of the program -- one that supports AVCHD video. Otherwise, you're in for a lot of headache. A converter isn't going to solve your problems.
BTW, when you say Premiere 6, do you mean Premiere 6 -- which is over 10 years old? (There was no Premiere Elements 6.)
Trust me on this: Capture with a Mac version of Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and your video will be perfectly compatible with any Mac program.
