Capturing Computer Activity on DVCAM deck

I am looking to capture the activity on a computer for a seminar that we are shooting. Is there a tablet type device - PC or MAC - that anyone has used that allows for s-video, firewire, or composite outputs that can be plugged directly into a DVCAM deck (Sony DSR11 is what I have) so that I can just pop in a DVCAM tape, hit record on the deck, and capure everything that happens on the screen? It would need to have some type of tablet type functionality so that the instructor could "write on" the tablet and that activity would be captured on output.
If anyone has created a similar set-up, I would be very interested to know.

What kind of ports does the Computer have? If it has a Video out (like on some laptops) you could easily just hook up an RCA or S-Video cable from the computer to the Deck.
You could also look into Converters. I have one for my laptop that converts the monitor out signal into an S-Video.
Lastly, you could try doing a capture using a screen capture program. This will be much more taxing on the computer itself, and would be risky at best for long seminars, but it's possible (something like Snapz Pro).
With any of those options, if you have the opportunity to test the setup now, rather than on site, that would be best <smile>.

  • Help please with capture / sequence settings for DVCAM PAL 16:9

Simple question but I'm baffled by choices for capture/sequence using FCP6 to capture 16:9 PAL DVCAM. Have tried esay set up (not enough options) and also sequence and capture settings manually too many options ) and always seem to end up with borders top and bottom, not full viewer / canvas at correct aspect ratio. Can someone tell me correct settings. I'm baffled by inclusion of 5:4 aspect ratio and whether in the compression box under advanced settings in the sequence settings bow I should select 4:3 or 16:9 and in the seq. settings box itself whether I should check anamorphic 16:9.In audio/video settings (summary tab) there's also a question about playback settings which is set to '(missing) apple firewire pal 720x568'. What's that about. Any assistance much appreciated.

Don't over think it. There's no reason why you should have to modify a capture preset in your situation. Use the easy setup for DV PAL 48 KHz Anamorphic (assuming your footage is anamorphic and not letterboxed). If you're seeing gray bars at the top and bottom of the canvas, hit ctrl-U to have the windows automatically adjusted to the right size. If you're seeing black bars, then your footage is probably letterboxed. You should use the regular DV PAL easy setup to capture that. If the Video Playback device is set to (missing) it's because your deck or camera is not turned on, or isn't connected to the computer.

  • Trial by fire.  Three camera fitness shoot. TC fed by DVCAM Deck.

    Hi all,
I am embarking on a three camera shoot for two 90 minute fitness videos. The timecode will be fed to all three cameras by a DVCAM deck that we are also using to play the live music that the performers will be exercising to. This way all four sources (three cameras & 1 music) all have the same Time code.
Although I see a million potential editing Gotchyas in this scenario (and there are probably a million more that I don't see), I only have one question at this time...
    Regarding FCP Capturing...
Whenever the performers mess up and we have to rewind the music (DVCAM) and reshoot a section, the timecode (that FCP will need to read) on all three cameras will suddenly jump backwards by a few minutes. We will be very careful to pre-roll and post-roll the music before starting or stopping cameras so we do not actually BREAK the timecode, but the actual TC clock will be jumping backwards with every take. This seems like it might be difficult to capture for FCP... any thoughts?
    Thanks for your brainstorming.

    Heya Zeb...
No problem on the TC IN on the cameras. Panasonic AJ-SDX900.
Regarding distribution of signal... feel free to point me in a direction... I have no idea and am on the hunt for just that piece of info.
Regarding VTR: Sony DSR-45. Has TC out, I hope it only spits out TC when the tape is rolling.... otherwise my whole paradigm is a house-o-cards.
    Regarding logging and capturing:
I assume that I am going to have to dust off my old fashion logging chops. Since I will have multiple instances of the same timecode on a single tape, I will probably have to manually set the in and out points and capture for each take. Then set the in and out points and capture the next take... etc.
My DP is trying to convince me to use a smart-slate... we are going back-n-forth about the pro's and con's.
A TC Generator will take care of many of the problems with the shoot, but it isn't the best answer as far as creating an editable (and more importantly, a re-editable) product. Remember, this whole thing is the equivalent of a three hour music video that is edited from probably about 20 hours of tape.
The TC generator will sync the cameras together, but I will still depend on older visual methods to sync the video to the music. When you have takes that are 15 to 25 minutes long, it would kind of stink to have to drop a 20 minute clip into the timeline and sync it, just because I wanted to find a 1 second long b-roll cut at the 18 minute mark.
IF, I can drive the entire shoot from a VTR that plays the performance music AND outputs timecode to three cameras.... seems to me that I will have hit a sweet spot for this type of production.
The music, and videotapes from three cameras will be in sync. If I "media manage" the project to a storage drive (or just want to offfload 15 hours of unused footage) the remaining clips will all have the right timecode embedded so when my client wants another complilation video, I can move things around with the knowledge that they will be in sync by simply lining up the TC.

  • Signals going to DVCAM deck but Audio/Visuals not going through

    Hello,
I'm puzzled with a situation I'm going through right now. I'm trying to copy a footage to a DVCAM tape using the DVCAM deck (DSR-25) but it isn't working.
1)Signal from FCP is going to the deck but visuals and audio aren't getting to the deck player/recorder. I say this because RECORD/STOP etc options from FCP gets sent to the deck properly (commands).
2)I am recording through Print to Video... under FILE
3)I have used GConverter (newest version) to convert a NTSC to PAL
4)Other project have worked fine going through the same method and procedures, including the NTSC to PAL conversion.
Currently, I can't come to any solutions except for perhaps re-recording and re-rendering, but if possible I would like to avoid that since that kills about 14 hours of time (although I'm starting it on another computer right now, just in case). I've tried everything I can think of including simple things like SHUTDOWN both the computer and deck, use different firewire cables, and so on.
Anyone got suggestions I may be able to try or maybe an option I am over looking?
    Thank you in advance

I can see the video on time lines including other things like the Viewer.
I have changed cables just in case, but it's only it for this one project. Other projects doing/going through the same manner are working properly.
Only thing I can really think of is something of the options isn't the same as others, but from what I can tell they are (like making sure that the Sequence is PAL and etc...even if it wasn't I should still get signal though) the same.
I'm still fidiling around with it as I type this

  • Time code flicker on DVCAM deck

After setting up a G5 with the previous DVCAM deck that I was using with a G4, I now find that the time code readout on the deck flickers (so badly it's impossible to read) when connected to the firewire port. It appears that the firewire connection with the Mac 'interferes' with the display. It didn't do this with a G4 and FCP 3, but now does with the G5 and FCP HD.
The timecode coming in on capture seems to be ok, as does the time code written to tape when anything is recorded.
Has anyone else seen anything like this and have you discovered a remedy?
My deck is a DVCAM DSR 20.
    Thanks

Thanks for this reply and sorry not to have acknowlege your post. Just coincidence probably plugging it in to the G5 and suddenly it does something odd.

  • Capturing screen activity in Quicktime

Can Quicktime Pro capture the activity on my PC screen? I want to create a video that shows some software we have created actually being used. I want to see the arrow move around the screen, push buttons, see reports being exported into excel etc etc. Can anyone help?!

QuickTime Pro can't be used to capture from your display.
Dozens of shareware apps are available and some Google searching is all you need to do.

  • Office 365 with Shared Computer Activation (on RDS 2012)

    Hi,
I have installed Office 365 (shared activation method) on RDS 2012.
This works fine, users can activate using their Office 365 account and the entire Office suite appears activated.
The issue is that the users intermittently (random intervals) have to re-enter their details and reactivate.
Under what circumstances should the users have to reactivate, sometimes I can logon and activate and the next logon I have to do it again. Other times it can last for days..
    Thanks.

If you have ADFS or DirSync to your O365 tenant, most likely you wouldn't see this happening, it would all hookup seamlessly (a lot like KMS just does...)

  • How to output a 16:9 movie to a DVCAM deck without letter boxing it

I need to take a 16:9 movie, convert it to DV codec so I can then export it to a DSR25 DVCAM deck. How do I squeeze the 16:9 footage onto the 4:3 DVCAM format, so when I play the footage from deck out of the deck it will be unsqueezed by the 16:9 monitor and play back normally?
I can't seem to find the setting or filter to tell FCP to export a squeezed version.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I've never heard of a pro deck having a consumer dvd-style setting that automatically corrects for anamorphic footage. That would be a monitor setting if you ask me.
I'm a little confused by the question however, are you working with hd source material? Any 16:9 SD should be anamorphic anyway so the only thing necessary would be to play out to your deck as is.
What is the source footage? and the sequence setting?

  • Office 365 ProPlus Shared Computer Activation - users are prompted to activate, proxy issue?

    Hi all,
We're currently testing the roll-out of Office 365 ProPlus with shared computer activation but are having problems with Office automatically activating (with no user prompts) when using our web proxy.
I've already added proxy exceptions (in our PAC file) for the 'Office 365 portal and identity' and 'Office 365 ProPlus' URLs (not Content Delivery Network) from
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh373144.aspx but test licensed Office 365 E4 users still get the 'Activate Office' prompt and even if they enter in their credentials are ultimately
told 'There is a problem with your account. Please try again later'.
Testing this on a computer not directed through the web proxy works fine and users get no pop-ups whatsoever and Office is licensed.
The problem is I can check the traffic passing through the proxy in real-time and no traffic destined for any of the URLs on the TechNet page actually goes out over the proxy, indeed there is no Microsoft orientated traffic at all. It's as if simply
specifying a proxy on IE's connection settings breaks shared computer activation.
I'm in the process of a support case with our web proxy company itself but if there's anyone out there who can shed any light on this it'd be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Last: My workaround that's about 6 months old:I
went through the same issue with Websense Cloud Web Security Gateway in my RDSH environment.
Off and on, and seemingly without provocation, users would be prompted for credentials and these credentials would sometimes be accepted and other times they could just cancel out and continue working.
I chalked this up to Microsoft's continual tuning and scaling of their cloud environment (we use Office 365).  I suspect Websense was not able to add hosts fast enough and the authentication issue just popped up from time to time.
My solution? A workaround...set the list of recommended MS servers on "bypass" so that any traffic destined to these servers Websense would essentially permit without interference.
    Best of luck to you.

  • Office 365 ProPlus Shared Computer Activation on non-persistent VDI

    Hello everybody
We've different customers that are using a non-persistent VDI solutions like VMWare Horizon or Citrix provisioning.
Some of the customers wants to license the Office Suite via Office 365 ProPlus.
When configuring Office 365 ProPlus with Shared Computer Activation and without AD FS we've the behaviour where users needs to login each time to Login to a machine, because after signou the machin gets restored.
Is the only solution the one described in
this article by using AD FS or is there another solution to perhaps store the provided Office 365 credentials and licensing information.
As I'm aware a Office 2013 volume license Version cannot be used anymore starting on 1. August 2015 if licensed over Office 365 ProPlus because the use-righst for a volume license version are being removed.
Thank you for clarification on that, because I'm not able to find on official statemant.
    Kind regards

    Hi,
ADFS should be the primary choice for your case. In addition to this there are a variety of qualified third party identity providers that can be connected with Office 365 to provide the necessary single sign-on.

I'm trying to record, via firewire, from my timeline to my DVCAM deck, but I can't because in the Preferences>Video/Audio Settings in Video Playback, there isn't an option at all for "Firewire NTSC," which is the option I need to send it to the DVCAM deck.  How can I correct this and record to tape?
