Capturing DVCPro 50

A simple question I know but I couldn't find a clear answer. Can I capture DVCPro 50 to FCP using the decks firewire output to the Mac's FW input? Or do I need a third party piece of hardware.

Nope, that's all you need.
That and the proper Project/Capture settings. And I'll bet you can figure those out.

Capturing dvcpro 50 - help!

I'm trying to capture dvcpro 50 tapes into FCP 6. It recognizes the deck and I have control, but the preview is all pixellated. The deck keeps giving me the E-00 error (servo not locked). Does this sound like a deck issue or a settings issue?
I've got it on the DVCPRO 50 easy setup, connected to the deck with firewire.

what deck are you using? Are you sure it's compatible with dvpro50?

Capturing DVCPRO-25

Does anyone how I can capture DVCPRO-25 (NTSC) I don't see a pre-set and I am not very experience with this format so I don't know what settings to use. I also heard that this is a professional format, so there is some box or something that I need to check so the audio and video are locked in snyc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to capture this tomorrow! (will only have the deck for an hour or two)
PS: I searched the manual for "capture DVCPRO" but amazingly nothing came up I could only find two pages on DVCPRO-25 that weren't helpful to my problem.

Your audio shouldn't drift (at least I don't think so). Make sure the audio was recorded at 48k. If it was recorded at 32k, you need to duplicate the preset and change the audio sampling rate. I do hourlong captures all the time without any audio drifting. Some people report audio drift with material shot on Canon cameras. I've worked with material shot with the xl1 without any drift.
Also make sure you have "abort capture on timecode break" enabled in the preferences.

Capturing DVCPRO HD

Hi, I've been capturing DVCPRO HD footage for months now, but recently a strange thing has been happening to my captured footage. The video seems to freeze for a few frames, and pick up again out of sink with the audio. This happens at least 4 or 5 times per 30 minute tape.
I cant seem to figure out what's happening. Any ideas?

Question, Has this computer even had FC5 on it?
And how many external drives are connected currently and are they daisy chained together or in a raid configuration? And How are they formatted?
Have you tried trashing the FC preferences and repairing disk permissions?
I would probably try re-installing Quicktime and try reducing the number of firewire drives on your pci bus card.
Its unfortunate you didn't go with the esata pci express card and that would insure the transfer speed for DVC Pro HD 1080i. http://www.siig.com/Default.aspx

Big Problem when Capturing DVCPro 50 tape with FCP 5.0.4

At the job we work with DVCPro 50 tapes wich I capture using the capture Preset DVCPro 50 NTSC, the images are perfect, but there is a problem with the sound it doesn't capture at the good frequence, exemple, if the capture provide 5 clips, the 3 or 4 first will be fine and the other one qill be at an audio rate of 47.* instead of 48 khz, does anyone had that problem already and if so, what can i do?? Cause now everything is off sync

sorry to bother you, but you were the only reply. 3 sources were mini dv. 1 was hdv. the mini dv sources were converted using toast (by someone else). when all sources were put on the timeline, i got the redline render. so i rendered them (took many many hrs). then i exported them. this turned them into
fcp movie files. then i re imported them. currently the browser says they are all dv/dvcpro, ntsc ccir601, 720x480. the weird thing is that i can multiclip any of the two sources, but not 3 or more. any help would be appreciated. thx dr

I have 54 (yes, fifty-four) DVCPro 50 tapes shot on the Panasonic SDX900 that I need to capture on my Macbook Pro. What's the most economical way to do this that won't cost me a fortune in rentals? My MBP has FW800 only.
Do I absolutely need a tape deck like the AJ-HD1200A?
Do I need a SDI converter box for the Macbook Pro? If yes, what's my most economical option?

Well, any deck that will play back those tapes. That is a DVCPRO HD deck that also does DVCPRO50. I'm sure there are DVCPRO 50 decks out there. But any way you slice it, you need a deck. And any deck you get will have a firewire interface. FCP has the codec for this format...it's called DV50.

In my Video settings I only have DVCPRO HD, or DV 50 NTSC. But no DVCPRO 50. Should I capture in DV 50 48khz anamorphic (it's 16x9)? Or is there something I should download?

as for +the panasonic camera shots PAL dvcpro 50, at 25 frames a second+ thats only true if you've got a PAL model ... what on earth makes you think this a format unique to the PAL world?

Capture DVCPRO tapes in Final Cut

I have a Sony HVR-M15 series tape deck and FCP 6. My deck captures mini-DV media via firewire in FCP no problem. The deck also has the capability to handle the bigger DVCPRO tapes. I can play the DVCPRO tape just fine on my monitor but when I try to capture it FCP freezes or sometimes gives me an error message (this operation cannot be completed as there is no video). Any ideas?

It looks like it is a compatibility issue with the deck. It still doesn't make sense that I can play the DVCPRO tapes but not capture them. http://www.globalmediapro.com/video/products/SonyHVRM15_HDVRecorder--1948.html This is my deck, and a list of the stuff that's compatible with it. It appears like the HD DVCPRO tapes are compatible so it seems like the normal ones should be.

Capture: DVCPRO HD 1080p30 vs Apple ProRes 422

We shot a project at 1080p30, 29.97 fps. I'm wondering if I should capture this footage using the DVCPRO HD 1080p30 setting or the Apple ProRes 422 setting. And why would you recommend using one or the other.

CAPTURING DVCPRO HD 720p25 PAL

I'm trying to load DVCPRO HD 720p25 PAL footage into FCP 6, but it won't let me load. How do I switch the VTR control...How do I load this material? I've set the FCP project to the settings for DVCPRO HD 720p25 for input but still no luck. Please advise.

Any difference capturing DVCPro HD footage in DVCProHD or Blackmagic 10bit?

Hi,
I have some footage that was shot DVCPro HD 50i that I am doing some effects work on. I captured the footage using the DVCPro HD codec, worked on them in After Effects, and then exported them using Blackmagic 10 bit, which is what our online system uses.
I am having problems with banding in some of the skies. (They are deep blue, with a grad filter.) The problem is definitely there in the original footage, but gets a little worse on my exports out of AE. (And yes, I am working in 16 bit in AE, and I am not actually doing anything, effect-wise, to the skies.)
I am pondering recapturing the footage as Blackmagic 10 bit, re-rendering the effects and then exporting out again to Blackmagic 10 bit.
My question is, does anyone think this might make a difference? If something was shot DVCPro HD, is there any advantage in capturing it in a 'better' codec?

banding caused by the gradiant filter? that's a big bummer. i wouldn't think recapturing or exporting in different bit depths or codecs would do anything save provide different file sizes but i've been known to be off base before.
you could try experimenting with some garbage mattes on a duplicate layer, apply some blurs and then screen that over the original in an attempt to smear and smooth out the chroma banding.

Capturing dvcpro hd 720p 25

I've tried capturing through my black magic extreme card via SDI but the results look awful, then I tried prores with much better results but the frame size is 1280X720 not 960X720 which is what I need. Any ideas why the quality is so low with the dvcpro hd 720p 25 codec and any other codecs I can use which will give me the same frame size?

Why not simply import the files via firewire in the original codec or, if the material is stored on a P2 card, simply drag the files onto the hard drive and use log and transfer?
The DVCProHD 720 960x720 dimension is how the codec stores the material. When it is played, it is translated into a full frame size of 1280x720. If you move the DVCPro material to a ProRes codec, the 1280x720 preset is appropriate.
Or did I not understand your problem/question?
How is the material stored? Tape, P2 cards?
What are you using as the capture device? VTR, camera, P2 card reader?
Version of FCP?
Version of OSX
Version of QT?
Computer model? (there is no such thing as a G5 Mac Pro)

Capturing DVCpro 50 into FCP 5

I am new to DVCpro50 and 24p and can't, for the life of me, get the deck (Panasonic SD93p) to read in FCP 5. I've got the firewire connected, but neither the computer (G5), nor the deck are registering that there is any sort of connection. Can anyone help me with the settings so I can capture this footage before I throw both the deck and the computer out the window?

DVCPRO HD 720P Capture File Pixel Dimensions, etc.

I'm crossing over from Final Cut 7 where I've been using AJA LHi card to capture DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94 tape from the Panasonic 1400 deck successfully for years. In Premiere I've adjusted all the capture settings and sequence settings to conform to DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94:
-Pixel format: MC DVCPRO HD 720P 60
-Capture format: AJA Mov Capture
-Video format: 720P 59.94
BUT....
-My Premiere capture tests look not only slightly horizontally stretched, but cropped about 30 pixels only on the right of the full raster frame in both Premiere and in playback in Final Cut 7. This is true for the clip as it plays on the timeline as well.
-When I launch the clip in QT player it has the same cropping problems but is playing as 960x720, not defaulting to 1280x720 as normal 16:9. Final Cut captured clips play in QT as default 1280x720. So the file as captured in Premiere is missing a tag that tells QT how to resize it. I'm in QT 10.4 by the way.
-I've imported captures from Final Cut into Premiere and they look fine.
-The Premiere captured clip in the bin shows as 960x720 which is correct for DVCPHD, but in parenthesis shows (1.3333) which I've never seen anywhere before.
-The folks at AJA think this is a Premiere issue not a capture card issue, and I tend to agree.
Any suggestions?

I'm wondering if what the original camera may have embedded into the file is jumbled in with the 1400 and "crashing into" what both FCP and PrPro expect to 'see'. From the above grab, PrPro is thinking that this is just a P2 format Panny camera, shooting "standard" P2 stuff. Which this clearly is not.
At this point ... wondering is say Kevin-Monahan could jump in here & provide some assistance? At least, he'd know who to talk with about this. So might shooternz ... he's been around this sort of thing for many years.

DVCPro 50 capture pre set? Where'd it go???

Awrite---I've tried every possible set up in AV Settings, Easy Set Up, Capture Presets, but cannot
get anything but 'Preview Disabled' when trying to capture DVCPro 50 tape by FW from Panisonic 1200A.
What'd I miss? Works fine with Vericam HD tapes, from shoots. But can't get any of the DVCPro50's
to come in.
Ideas?

It is called DV50. And yes, that is a confusing name. Wish they'd change that....no one knows it as DV50.
