Capturing DVD audio into sound files to be played in iTunes

Hi. I am new to the land of Apple. I got an iBook G4 with a Superdrive and I have a question; well, more than one, but I will just ask one for now.
I have several purchased DVDs and I want to capture the audio from these and save them into a format that can be captured into iTunes.
I have downloaded Audicity and tried to use it to capture the audio while I am watching the DVD. No luck!
How can I accomplish this task?
Thanks,

  • Converting left channel audio into stereo file

I'm using an edirol ua 25 which has two inputs, 1 which is a left channel and 2 a right channel. As i'm using the first input, the recorded audio pans hard left, how do I go about converting the recorded audio into a central stereo file?

Why do you want to change it to stereo? It isn't a stereo (two-channel) recording, it's a mono, single-channel recording.
Mono is not somehow "worse" than stereo, don't feel that need that everything should be recorded to two channels, it's a waste of resources.
You can pan it anywhere in the stereo field - with the pan knob central, the mono track will be centered in the stereo field. You can pan it left or right accordingly.

  • My Quicktime Mp4 Video Archive is Converting into Sound Files

I archived a number of videos using quicktime, in mp4 format. I don't know if this was caused by a software update; but, these videos only play as sound files now. This has happened on quicktime videos stored independently on both of my Macs - so I don't think it is a problem with one of my computers.
I must not be the only one who has experienced this problem. Does anyone know what to do about it?

Thank you for the prompt response to my question. I opened up the "Movie Inspector". I don't see where it says "codecs"; but, is says:
    Format: H.264, 320 x 240, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz.
    FPS: 29:97
    Playing FPS: (Available while playing.)

I hope that helps . . . Again, thank you for your reply.

  • Fcp 7 hdv captured clip turns into text file

Would anyone know why hdv clips captured using prores 422 are coming in as a text file?? In the browser info fields under creator they indicate "textedit" and also appear in the capture scratch folder as text files (with no quicktime logo). However, they will play in the viewer and timeline.
If I "get info" on them in the capture scratch folder they are listed as plain text and won't open with qt. If I add .mov to the end of the file they then indicate a qt file and will play.
All of this is using fcp 7, QT 7.6.2, and only trying to capture hdv. SD is fine.
When I switched to another drive and opened 6.0.5 and tried the same thing, same easy setup, etc., they come is as quicktime as they always have.
Am I missing something? Is this enough info to get any advice?

    Hi Michael
Capturing in ProRes is an unusual workflow, most people don't have a clue about it. I would suspect that's why we don't have very many people complaining about the problem just yet. I upgraded to FCP 7 shortly after it's release, and upgraded to Snow Leopard the day after it came out, but haven't needed to capture any additional projects until now. I wish I would of captured some footage between upgrading to FCP 7 and Snow Leopard so I could possibly isolate the problem and or distinguish which upgrade may be causing the problem. I would expect we'll start to see or hear of more people having the problem soon. I haven't looked in any of the other forums, i.e. Creative Cow or anywhere else to see if this problem has been reported elsewhere, but I'll do so and get back to ya.
No, I didn't preform a clean install of the OS and FCP Studio, I installed the upgrade the way is was written and intended to be installed, as an upgrade. I've never captured HDV in any other format other than ProRes from day 1. I tell you what, why don't YOU try to capture in ProRes and see what you come up with, before you start suggesting to people that they should reinstall their OS and NLE from scratch. No I didn't do a clean install, but what difference should that make? That's a whole lot easier and quicker said then done pall! No offense, but it totally irks me when that's the first thing people what to suggest, it's such a PC/Windows mentality!
ProRes is Apples baby, it's not some 3rd party format I've chosen to use in the place of the standard that Apple has provided us. What kind of "system hacks" or you implying? No I haven't installed ANY system hacks! Editing video is my bread and butter, I've spent an awful lot of money purchasing the software/hardware that I need to do my job (i.e tools of the trade) not to mention the countless hours to learn how to to it properly and I certainly don't feel that I should have to look for work-arounds which require me to rename hundreds of captured files to simply add the file extension of .mov to make the software which I've spent so much money for to work properly!
So please, capture some ProRes 422 files and then get back with us okay? Thanks!

  • Sound file and custom play.

Hello, I have an sound file and, want to play part's of this file not the whole sound file every time, in my application.
e.g i want to play from 1:23 min till 1:29 min can i do this in an iphone app and how?
    Thanks in advance!

yes i know that way, but i want to have a big sound file and keep some pointers in an array with the seconds i want, depending some user actions, the whole sound file is usable, but in different user actions different parts of it will be played! Is there a way doing that? Without splitting the file into pieces?
A similar example could be found at youtube comments when someone writes a time point...example 3:25 of the video this refers to a link and when its pressed you auto transferred to the 3:25 'th second of the video....I tried to give you a related usage...I dont know if you understand what i mean...
    thanks anyway!

  • MP3 files won't play in iTunes (Vista), but will play in WMP/iTunes (Mac)

I have a strange problem that's starting to get incredibly frustrating!
Have a wonderful Mac (powerbook g4 1.5 ghz), got a new PC recently, running Vista and iTunes 7.5.0.20, and transferred my iTunes library over.
I've found that a significant number of MP3 files (maybe 5% of a library of 5397 songs) refuse to play on iTunes, but play just fine in Windows Media Player or in iTunes on my Mac.
The problematic files exhibit the following symptoms:
If I double click one of the files to play it (or hit the play button), nothing happens
If I set album art to show for the selected song, I get the mesage "Album Artwork Not Modifiable" in the album art box
If I try to convert one of the files to MP3, I get the error "Error occurred while converting the file "foo". An unknown error occurred (-50)."
The problematic files have artist/album/title info, but they have nothing listed for "Format" "Channels" "ID3 Tag" or "Encoded With" (the labels don't show at all in the "Summary" section of Get Info
Any suggestions? Right now, I'm thinking of re-encoding the problem files on my Mac, but that's a pretty kludgy workaround. Ideas would be appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Daniel

I had this same problem and found a solution. I used an external program for ID3 tagging (MediaMonkey) and the tags it wrote for a few files must have been corrupt. As a result iTunes would not play the file. I simply re-tagged the files with MediaMonkey again and the problem went away.

  • Original music files no longer play in iTunes

So I recorded a demo for my band and after several months of trouble-free playing on iTunes it has all of sudden decided that I am nt authorized to play these files anymore and I can't get them to open outside of iTunes anymore.  HELP!!

I am experiencing the same problem

  • AppleTV Not playing .Mov files that will play in iTunes

After Major Hard Disc issues I had to use a Data Rescue II to retrieve the files.
All seems fine now except Data Recover II converted all of the m4v to mov files?
They play fine from iTunes, but apple tv does is giving me an error that file format is not recognized or it just does not load...
    File Details are as follows:
    Kind: QuickTime Movie File
    Profile: Low Complexity
    Bit Rate: 158 kbps
    Video Dimesions:1280x720
    Video Codec: h.264
    Thanks in advance peeps!

    what's the framrate?
bear in mind that just because something is in itunes, does not mean it is appletv compatible.
also, have you tried simply changing the extension back to .m4v ?

  • HD movie and tv show files won't play in iTunes 10.6.3.

Just did a fresh install of Mountain Lion and for some reason now HD movie and tv show files won't play.  I get a black screen.
Standard Def tv shows and movies are still playing fine though.
Oh and  yes I already tried switching it to 32-bit mode via the "Get Info" screen.  Same problem results.
    Any suggestions?

I think I have the same problem. Every time I play some HD movies in iTunes the movie seems to be stuck and the screen black. If I scrub the movie forward I can see the picture, even captions, but I can't play them. I said some because there are certain movies that DO play. I mean HD ones, SD video plays fine. But I couldn't find any clue. It's not a matter of file size, neither a matter of resolution, compressio... I'll wait for an update (system and/or iTunes) and if nothing happens I think I'll dig a little more. This is no big issue for me since they ALL seem to play perfectly when I select AirPlay to my Apple TV.
    I'll try checking tags

  • Audio issue stuttering file on initial playing of file.

    removed...

    @foundnemo627,
Hello again and thank you for posting back.  Here is the first thing I am going to get you to try.
Go to your notebooks support page.  Here is the link.
HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j001tx Notebook PC - Software and Drivers
Now download all your software and drivers from here and save them to a memory stick or burn to disk.
Once you have them saved then boot your system into safe mode.
HP PCs - Windows 8 Safe Mode
While in safe mode you will now uninstall all your drivers including your chipset drivers.
Using Device Manager to Uninstall Devices and Driver Packages
You may need to reboot between each driver that is uninstalled.  Remember to boot into safe mode between each one.
Once you have all drivers removed then boot into windows normally.  When you get to the desktop you will now start installing drivers.  Remember to install the chipset driver first.  The reason for this is that the chipset driver controls the communications of the other drivers.
when you have all this done try the headphones again.  If you still have the same issue you will need to send the notebook in for repair.

  • Bounced MP3 file do not play in iTunes

    Hi guys!
I'm a new Logic Express 9 user (and a complete novice in recording!). I just managed to connect my Roland RD-700SX piano to my Macbook Pro (USB connection). I managed to use Logic Express 9 to record a simple song that I played on the piano. If I understand it correctly, the flow of data and subsequent "creation" of sound is as follows:
    - upon recording: piano keyboard (acting as controller) --> Logic Express (receiving MIDI-data from keyboard) --> sound generator inside the piano (receiving MIDI-data from Logic Express) --> speakers
    - upon playback: Logic Express (sending the recorded MIDI data) --> sound generator inside the piano (receiving recorded MIDI-data from Logic Express) --> speakers
I then bounced the file to an MP3 (following the directions in the "Exploring Logic Express 9" manual).
Upon playing the MP3 file in iTunes, there is no sound. I can see that the file was compressed (the MP3 file is about a quarter of the original uncompressed file).
Why is there no sound after bouncing the file? Does it have something to do with the fact that the "playback" within Logic Express 9 is sending the MIDI data to the piano's sound generator, and therefore does not actually hold the "audio" data, but a mere projection of that data? If the latter, how can I record the "audio" that I hear when playing the recording in Logic Express? If not possible to record the exact same audio (which is based on a top-range grand piano pre-installed in the RD-700SX), is there a way to use the MIDI-data in the project file and record "audio" based on the instruments that came with Logic Express?
    Thanks!

    Hi man,
my sympathy for RD700sx users is unbroken
You gave the answer yourself: "Why is there no sound after bouncing the file? Does it have something to do with the fact that the "playback" within Logic Express 9 is sending the MIDI data to the piano's sound generator, and therefore does not actually hold the "audio" data, but a mere projection of that data?"
That's exactly what happens. You didn't record any audio in Logic, but only MIDI data streamed from and to your digital piano.
To have your song bounced, you must record the RD700SX' sounds into an audio track. To do this, it is not sufficient to connect the keyboard via USB, because it hasn't got an integrated audio interface.
Instead, go get yourself an audio interface (or, in case of missing funds, connect it with a suitable adapter cable directly to you Mac's inputs, you'll want to use the headphone jack of the RD700 as output perhaps). Then, aim a audio track for recording and hit record. The Mac will stream the MIDI data to your RD700, which in return will feed the audio track with audio (resulting in a visible waveform). Now this can be bounced.
Alternatively, you can use the MIDI data you've recorded to feed software instrument tracks which will produce audio as well.

  • Saving DVD on an external hard drive to play through iTunes/apple TV

I have saved a couple of DVDs directly in my iTunes folders and can play them through iTunes and my Apple TV but I would like to save all of my DVD collection onto an external hard drive because of a large file sizes and then play them through iTunes and Apple TV as well, I'm unsure how this will work on a
    Hard drive can anyone help/explain?
    Brenn

Thanks for your reply, but is this not the same method for when when you buy a CD, you import a CD into iTunes and then play it through your IOS devices, is it not the same for DVD's?
I image at some point in the future Apple will have a version of itunes match for films.
