Capturing dvd's

What is the best way to go about capturing dvd footage?

Or... take the analogue outs from your dvd player and run them through an
AD converter (or your camera, deck....) then FW from there into the computer. Change your Device Preset in FCP to NON CONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
Press play on the DVD player and hit Capture Now.
Not as clean as converting the files but...

  • Capturing DVD video shot with a DVD Camcorder

I have a Panasonic DVD camcorder. It records on mini DVD's.
With FCE, how do I capture what I've shot. The camera has a USB output but not a fire wire.
Can I go directly from my digital camcorder to the capture tool? Or can I use the internal DVD player in my MacBook?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

this is the usual reply in the iMovie section of this board, when it comes to converting DVDs into 'dv' (=for editing in iM/FCE):
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member QuicktimeKirk stated: I use the analogy of the old Polaroid "instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and show it off. ..
for using the iLife apps (= and FCE...) , you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * VisualHub (23.32$)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • How to import/capture DVD or CD-ROM video into FCE4 to edit?

No copyright issues here. The DVDs are public relations material from government agencies or private companies that WANT their material to be used.
How to get this off the disc and into Final Cut Express 4 in a format that can be edited?
    g.

One of the most common questions on this forum. The Search feature would have resulted in lots of info.
Basically you need to convert the DVD's MPEG2 format to a video format FCE can work with, like DV or HDV
You can use software solutions like MPEG Streamclip or DVxDVD to do the conversion. MPEG Streamclip is free but you need to purchase Apple's MPEG Playback Component to make it work
If you have a DV cam with pass thru capabilities, you can also try hooking the DVD player to the cam via analog cable then hooking the cam to the puter via Firewire. You would then select FCE's DV Converter easy setup and use Capture Now
No matter which solution you use, you may experience some quality loss when you go back to DVD

  • Capturing DVD On FCE-HD

I'm trying to capture self generated DVD video into FCE-HD. In "Easy Setup" which category should I choose? DV-NTSC?
I'm attempting to ingest the DVD video out of my DVD player in my MacBook.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately, you're asking your FCE question in the FCP forum. The FCE forum is here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936
That said, you cannot capture the way you've described. Essentially you have two options; hardware or software.
The Software option includes using software to rip/convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format. I'd recommend MPEG Streamclip for this.
The hardware method would include connecting a stand-alone DVD player to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter), then set FCE's device control to 'Non-Controllable Device' and use Capture Now.
Keep in mind that either of the above methods are for non-copyright protected material. Also, if at all possible you'd be much better off using the original acquisition tapes as DVD-Video footage is heavily compressed.

  • I cannot screen capture DVD's on my MacBook. Help?

I've been trying to use movie clips for a project. Basically, I insert the DVD into my laptop, pull it up, get my QuickTime Player screen capture thing all ready and then press record. The moment I press record the movie "grey's out" and doesn't uncover iself until I stop the recording. Why is this? How can I fix it?

That's a feature that's been included with the system and software for a while now so users can't duplicate copyrighted material which is illegal.

  • Capture DVD using PowerMac as player?

I did a search and could not find the answer.
Is there a way to capture from a DVD (home burned- not commercial) using the player in the Mac tower? I normally do this from stand alone DVD recorder using as Decklink card- but sometimes I am burning a separate project and want to capture.
Is there any way FCP can capture a playback directly from a DVD playing in the Mac tray?
If not- why not? and will it ever be possible?
    Thanks

Nope....gotta use software to EXTRACT the footage.
    MPEG STREAMCLIP.
    Google it.

  • Dvd capture - Dvd home movies captured to HD

HI, I have several home that was from old vhs tapes. A while back I captured them and burned them to dvd as movies.
Now I would like to take these DVD's and burn them on a hard drive. My feeling is I will get a 500 gig hard drive and burn all of the home movies on the drive. Seems like a better soloution then saving them to DVD.
So my question is how do I play the dvd into my computer and the save it on a hard drive for later viewing?

This is a suggestion posted by AppleMan, who seems quite knowledgeable regarding iMovie 9:
+I have found I get the best results when I use MPEG Streamclip (which is free). You also have to install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component which costs about $20. Once you install the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, you don't have to interact with it, but MPEG Streamclip needs it.+
+Insert your DVD in your drive. If DVD player runs automatically, shut it down. You should see your DVD as an icon on the desktop. Open it is a finder winder. You should see a folder which has VOB files.+
+Open MPEG Streamclip and drag these VOB files into Streamclip. If it offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes. You can do the VOB files one by one if you want to deal with shorter clips. Or, you can drag all the VOB files at once and create one long clip, or use streamclip to separate them into smaller clips.+
+In Streamclip, select File/Export using Quicktime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. You may want to check "Deinterlace" in this step. Try deinterlacing and see if you like it. It depends on your final target media as to whether this will help.+
+Now you should have MOV files in Apple Intermediate Codec which can be imported into iMovie.+
+If you want, you can create a folder under iMovie Events and export these clips from MPEG Streamclip directly to that folder. The next time you open iMovie, it will generate thumbnails.+
Post back if this does not help you.

  • Capturing dvd using DSR-11 and a DVD player

Hi.. It is probably pretty simple but I can't seem to work it. HELP ME PLEASE!
I am trying to capture a non-copyrighted dvd on FCP 5.1 (Powermac G5). I have the video output (both RCA and S-video) from the dvd player connected into the input on the Sony DSR-11. I have the input selector on the deck set to S-Video. When i play the dvd, it shows up on the NTSC monitor... but nothing shows up on the log and capture window preview. If click on capture now, it shows a black screen which says "trying to locate timecode" on the bottom.
I do not have a tape in the deck. I tried it with the S-video and Video seperately. No luck.
Thank you in advance. Hope I help some help from the wise.

    Hi:
You can use * MPEG Streamclip * to extract and re-encode the DVD footage. I don't think you'll get better quality capturing it through your deck.
    My 2 cents !
    Hope that helps !

  • Capture DVD quality video

Greetings, I have a two hour show on DV tape. I want to capture it using Final Cut Pro 5 and output it to DVD Studio Pro. Could someone tell me what the best capture setting is for this or do I have to capture using Firewire NTSC. I'm trying to conserve space on a hard drive.
    thanks in Advance
    g5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What format did you shoot in? I take it as DV NTSC.
Theres no way to try an conserve disk space by capturing with a different format.
I would do this if I was trying to conserve disk space.
Capture my footage normally, with my presets set.
Edit my sequences, and export using compressor.
In Compressor I would choose the setting:
"DVD: Best Quality 120 Minutes 4:3" (or 16:9 if that's what you want.)
Using both the AIFF audio and the Dolby audio.
The files compressor makes are smaller.
    Then delete your captured files.

You can't capture from a DVD drive, but you can "rip". For more info on ripping see

  • Capture DVD footage

I am trying to figure out how to capture footage off a DVD I have....
I had 8 mm film transferred to DVD and want to further edit it. But, I can't seem to figure out how to transfer the data from the DVD to my computer to do my editing....
I look at the contents of the DVD and it is a bunch of odd filenames... It is running under a YesVideo programming, it appears from Costco. I had had a Windows-based program on my Windows-based computer that allowed me to capture some video... but, I can't seem to figure it out now on my Mac.

is your DVD a data DVD or a regular DVD (ie does it contain VOB files or not).
If it does, you can follow Applemans Tip linked below

  • CS4 Capture DVD files

CS4 I need to capture segments of DVD's I have created from before to make a hilite video. But it won't capture the vob files off of the DVD. I usually just capture DV tape.
    Thank you

You're better off going back to the original material here.  But if you're not terribly concerned with the hit in quality using the finished DVD, here's what I do.

  • Capturing DVD audio into sound files to be played in iTunes

Hi. I am new to the land of Apple. I got an iBook G4 with a Superdrive and I have a question; well, more than one, but I will just ask one for now.
I have several purchased DVDs and I want to capture the audio from these and save them into a format that can be captured into iTunes.
I have downloaded Audicity and tried to use it to capture the audio while I am watching the DVD. No luck!
How can I accomplish this task?
    Thanks,
