Capturing DVD Video

I'm running Adobe Premiere Pro and Elements DVD. I am trying to figure out a way to capture video from my DVD-RW drive... anyone know how?
Thanks

Mark,
You can't capture from a DVD drive, but you can "rip". For more info on ripping see

  • Capturing DVD video shot with a DVD Camcorder

I have a Panasonic DVD camcorder. It records on mini DVD's.
With FCE, how do I capture what I've shot. The camera has a USB output but not a fire wire.
Can I go directly from my digital camcorder to the capture tool? Or can I use the internal DVD player in my MacBook?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

this is the usual reply in the iMovie section of this board, when it comes to converting DVDs into 'dv' (=for editing in iM/FCE):
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member QuicktimeKirk stated: I use the analogy of the old Polaroid "instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and show it off. ..
for using the iLife apps (= and FCE...) , you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * VisualHub (23.32$)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • DVD Video Capture Software

    Hello,
I have a newbie video question. We have a customer that needs to have an old video edited slightly for upload to the web. I own Premiere Pro CS4, but need to get the video from the original DVD, which contains and Audio_TS and Video_TS folder with associated files contained therein.
In the past, I've had to borrow a piece of hardware that ran from a traditional DVD player to my computer to capture the DVD video, which then would be able to import it into Premiere for editing.
Does anyone know if there is a software that would allow me to avoid the hardware interface between the DVD player to my computer? It would be so much easier to be able to put the DVD in my Mac, and somehow capture the video, so I could then be able to edit in Premiere.
This may not be impossible I don't know, but we don't do much video, and hate to borrow the hardware again or sub it out.
    Thanks for any help.
    Corey

Just a quick follow up to those who read this thread. On my Intel iMac, I ended up using the free MPEG Streamclip for Mac (http://www.squared5.com) to convert the VOB files on the original DVD, and then converted them to quicktime format for editing.
The file renaming mentioned above didn't work for me. I ended up with multiple errors.
The MPEG Streamclip software demultiplexed as Angelo suggested above. While it worked perfectly for me and was free, I did have to purchase the QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X (http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw) for $19.99.
Before purchasing this component from Apple, Streamclip seemed to import the VOB files off the DVD, but nothing was visible and did not work properly. As a point of note, I'm running QuickTime v. 7.5.5.
Once the QT MPEG-2 component was purchased, downloaded and installed from Apple, Streamclip captured the entire DVD, audio and video, demultiplexed and exported in the format I chose. (QuickTime)
It was then easy to import the QuickTime file into Premeire and the editing began. No hardware bridge was needed to capture the DVD, and it seemed reasonably intuitive.
Though keep in mind, you will likely need to cough up the $20 dollars to Apple for the MPEG-2 component. Before purchasing that component, I couldn't get Streamclip to capture any of my DVDs'.
Hope the follow up helps someone...

  • TV capture cards / DVD video / AV codecs

Does anyone know if it's possible to use a TV capture card on Solaris 10 for x86?
Also, is it possible to play DVD video? Are there any licensed DVD video drivers?
Is there any support for the Windows Media Video (WMV) format? (haven't checked this one yet)
Which audio/video codecs are supported on Solaris?

  • Capture segment of DVD video

I have a DVD and I want to capture a portion of the video on it so I can convert it for my iPod. What is the best approach for doing this? MPEG Streamclip? Is there anyway to tell the program to only capture the video from certain points in the DVD video timeline?
    THank you,
    TM

Comeon. It's not that complicated. Just do a little exploring in Mpegstreamclip and you'll figure it out. Hey, if I could figure it out.... well maybe that's not true. Now, I'm going to get a bunch of email's telling me how terrible and cruel I am. Well I can live with that.

  • SHOWBIZ DVD 2 captures analogue video on my E10

Showbiz DVD 2 captures analogue video on my E10.
    Stu

Ivan25 I too would like to capture from my analogue in. I don't think it's right when you get programs with your computer that just don't work as configured.
I don't use my modem that came with my laptop as I have broadband but I'm sure I would take it back if it didn't work, regardless of whether I use it or not.
Something seems to have happened to the ability to capture from the analogue in now that MCE is involved. I know others that can capture from their Toshiba analogue in but they don't have MCE.
I have my MCE configured for use as my TV and don't want to have to mess with the setup each time I want to capture one of my old VHS tapes.
It's also not about buying software as I've tried 5 trial programs for capturing and all of them say that the video in is either being used or not available.
I would be happy if it was only a matter of ending a running process and then restarting it when I'm finished but it seems to be more than that.

  • Importing unencrypted dvd video files

I have always brought in video from DVD through a converter and used batch capture. However, I was given the following instructions for bringing in the files without a converter:
"Use imovie and do import and select dvd as source, will copy raw dv footage and save. Convert to quicktime stream, can do in imovie if have quicktime pro, and final cut has as well."
When I tried to follow these instructions using imovie, I got stuck after selecting import and then selecting the dvd footage. It would show a window as if it was importing and then nothing would happen. Where did I go wrong? Does anyone know how this should work who can explain it to me?

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Roundabout way to do it and the instructions really don't make any sense anyway. Even if it works you'll be doing multiple conversions of your video.
Take a look at MPEG Streamclip. It's free, works great, and many people in this forum use it. It's a utility that will directly convert the DVD video to the DV format that FCE requires. (And if you don't already have the QuickTime MPEG 2 Playback Component installed on your Mac, you will need to get it from Apple - $19.99)

  • Capturing input video from a DV camera

I found that my old Sony HC90 DV camera makes a good video to Digital converter so I can make DVDs of my old family VHS tapes made over 15 years ago on a video only camera.
I set it up using firewire so that the VCR video is visible on the camera viewfinder and therefore also on the capture preview window of PE9.
As soon as I select Capture, the tape starts playing and cuts out the input VCR video.
If  I stop the tape playing on the camera, the PE9 capture also stops.
This means I cant capture any input video without the transport rolling.
If I record it all on camera tape I can replay this and capture it OK but everything will then take twice as long to do
Is there any way I can use the PE capture feature without it starting the tape transport as well so I can capture direct from VCR to Computer?
Alternately is there any other (hopefully free) capture program that doesnt also control the camera transport so I can just capture the video?

    Thank you!
I think I will give it a try. I found a web page that seems to be the owners:  http://paul.glagla.free.fr/captureflux_en.htm  does that look like the correct page to you? His latest version is 6.0, and looks like it was done in 2008. Do you know of a more recent version?
I'm also trying to find a fire wire card for my computer (Dell XPS 8300)
I don't understand why they wouldn't include the firewire card, considering this is a great computer for video editing. I guess most people are using their computers for gaming and streaming and watching DVDs, not making them.
I have been able to import using PE10, but it seems a little glitchy.
I'm also going to try an updated version of the motionDV studio that came with my Panasonic.
    Thanks again--

  • Capturing DVD On FCE-HD

I'm trying to capture self generated DVD video into FCE-HD. In "Easy Setup" which category should I choose? DV-NTSC?
I'm attempting to ingest the DVD video out of my DVD player in my MacBook.
    Thanks.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately, you're asking your FCE question in the FCP forum. The FCE forum is here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936
That said, you cannot capture the way you've described. Essentially you have two options; hardware or software.
The Software option includes using software to rip/convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format. I'd recommend MPEG Streamclip for this.
The hardware method would include connecting a stand-alone DVD player to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter), then set FCE's device control to 'Non-Controllable Device' and use Capture Now.
Keep in mind that either of the above methods are for non-copyright protected material. Also, if at all possible you'd be much better off using the original acquisition tapes as DVD-Video footage is heavily compressed.

  • How to Optimize Quality of DVD Video using Premier 6.5

I am looking for some advice how to get the best video quality on the MPEG-2 DVDs I create. I capture my MiniDV video into Adobe Premiere 6.5 in AVI format using a D-Link (at least 2 years old) 1394 fireware card. I set my default projects settings to Microsoft DV Compressor, Frame Size 720 x 480, 16x9 aspect, 29.97 fps, depth millions, quality 100%. Once my editing is done, I export using Adobe Premier 6.5 MPEG encoding (I have the latest 1.3 update). I typically pick the DVD 16x9 High Bit Rate setting. My DVDs look OK. The Canon ZR30 MC MiniDV Camcorder I have been using recently died; it was about 5 years old. I just replaced it with a 3CCD MiniDV camcorder from Panasonic (PV-GS320) that should help in terms of the source video quality. I am not ready for HD. Too expensive to upgrade my PC and disk subsystem in particular and my preference will be an HD camcorder with no spinning hard drive or moving tapes. We are very close to this. I imagine many folks are in my boat in this in-between stage where we get to watch HD on our LCD TVs but must work in the stone ages with our DVD video editing software and equipment. I would appreciate any suggestions how to get better performance either by upgrading to newer software from Adobe (provided this will really help), buying a better capture card, changing my settings in Premier. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    >typically pick the DVD 16x9 High Bit Rate setting
I will qualify this by saying that I (used to) use Premiere 6.02 and the MPEG output added by a Pinnacle Dv500 card's software, so I don't have any direct experience with Premiere 6.5 and the MainConcept coding engine
    But, I am
    switching over to Premiere Pro
which also uses MainConcept, so I have some experience with settings
For a video up to one hour, your current settings are probably the best you can do
For over one hour, you should look at 2-pass VBR settings
In Pro, there is a place to adjust the 3 individual components, and I used a MINimum bitrate of 3 and MAXimum bitrate of 7 (see below) and would then play with the TARGET bitrate to have the highest setting where the software would say there was enough space (on a DVD) to export the project
That "play with" consisted of adjusting the target bitrate a tenth at a time (6.5 6.4 6.3 etc) until the status message would change from insufficient space to READY... at which point I knew I had the best quality the software could give

    To
Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)

  • IMovie capturing HD Video at 1/2 - 3/4 speed then quits

I'm using a sony HC3 HD Camcorder and a Mac Pro with Dual 3.0 Ghz processors and 2GB of Ram.
I'm trying to capture some video from the camcorder , but each time I do the capture slows down to 1/2 -3/4 speed then quits capturing all together. I've made several attempts all ending the same way. I've Verified all disk permissions and attempted to capture the video to 4 different hard drives ( all of which I performed a "repair" on via disk utilities).
To make matters more odd, the video captures fine on my Macbook Pro using the same camera and cable
I've performed a Hardware test on the Mac Pro as well, but no problems were found.
Anyone with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much!! ( All updates have been made to the software as well)
(Not sure it matters, but I'm using a Radeon x1900 video card)

    Hi John
    You need:
    - 13Gb free space per hour movie on Your hard disk - plus
    - 10 Gb to let Mac OS run OK - plus
    - 1 - 4 times 13Gb x hour of movie material to let iMovie have work space.
    = 1 hour movie needs minimum: 13Gb + 10Gb + 13Gb = 33Gb free space.
If this doesn't apply eg 150Gb free then I would
    - Run: Repair Permissions (Apple disk util tool)
    - Delet iMovie pref file
    - last - start from CD/DVD or external hard disk and Run: Repair Hard disk
    (Apple disk util tool)

  • Question About Importing DVD Video to iMovie 9

I have some home DVDs with 3 types of files on them (.BUP, .IFO, and .VOB), and they are all grayed out when I try to import them in iMovie. iMovie help says the format has to be in MPEG-4, DV, or .mov files
What's the recommended converter/process to get the DVD video into iMovie?
All I really want to do with the video is capture clips from the DVDs

    Hi Appleman1958,
Here's situation: I have several DVDs that were burned from home videos (high school football games, etc.). I don't know whether they were burned using iMovie/iDVD or some other program. I need to pull clips from the individual DVDs and combine them into a new DVD. I've edited movies that were recorded on my digital camera with iMovie and burned the project to a DVD using iDVD, so that part isn't a problem.
    My questions are as follows:
    1. I downloaded the QuickTime component and Streamclip, per the instructions in your post dated 12/5/09. After I installed each application (or thought I did), I dragged the files from the "download" folder to the trash. Now I don't see the applications in the Finder. Did I uninstall the applications when I dragged the downloaded files to the trash? Also, the file types in the trash are "Disk Images" (.dmg). Is that correct?
    1. Will the QuickTime MPEG2 Component/Streamclip process work for DVDs that weren't created using Apple software?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • DVD video/audio rip to FCP but skipped frames, why?

    Dear Pros.
I am having an issue with frame and audio skipping on me through out the clips that I ripped from DVD video. DVD video is created by Panasonic DMR-6070. It is an educational lecture that we create at the university. We use DMR-6070 to master the video. DMR-6070 creates MPEG2 video in 325x480. I am able to rip the video using MPEG Streamclip as 720x480 QuickTime DV/DVCPRO NTSC video/audio with 29.97 FPS.
When I bring the DVD ripped footage to FCP and start to edit, I noticed that every10 seconds or so, video and audio skips. I don’t know why it is doing this. The original DVD video does not have this issue. When I tried to export from DVD, I specified to 29.97 FPS. FCP is set to edit with DVD/NTSC settings with 29.97 FPS. The video should come into FCP without any hitch. But I am stuck…
Also I shot the same footage with DV cam in different angle. I am trying to edit two footages using Multiefootage edit mode. The footages were cued up by IN point. However, videos start to become out of synch after 2 min. of footages past. So I am assuming that some issues with dropped frames.
How do you work with DVD video and bring the footages into FCP? Do you see any dropped frames? Can you Multifootage edit with a mix of video sources?
    Thank you in advance.

    G4 Dual, PB 17   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

There is something very strange about the size of the MPEG2 files you say the recorder produces; the file size you quote is MPEG1 video not MPEG 2. this is the start of your problems I would think. I have a number of Panasonic recorders and they all produce 720x540 in standard mode PAL
I trust you are NOT using the Extended Play mode on the recorder, the 6hr setting?. This will really muck things up if you are.
I get excellent results from video recorded on the Panasonics, taking account there is a quality drop by converting from DVD.
I convert to DVD to Quicktime using DVDxDV, edit in FCP then output to DVD again and never have problems.
Try a test using the free DVDxDV tryout application and see what results you get.
As to dropped frames in editing the DV cam I assume you have the basic configuration for using FCP:
    - you are capturing to external media drives, not the system drive
    - have the correct version of QuickTime for the version of FCP and the OS you have
    - you have the same AV settings for both sets of footage you are trying to edit on the timeline - FCP will not edit different setups in the same timeline

  • Capture DVD footage

I am trying to figure out how to capture footage off a DVD I have....
I had 8 mm film transferred to DVD and want to further edit it. But, I can't seem to figure out how to transfer the data from the DVD to my computer to do my editing....
I look at the contents of the DVD and it is a bunch of odd filenames... It is running under a YesVideo programming, it appears from Costco. I had had a Windows-based program on my Windows-based computer that allowed me to capture some video... but, I can't seem to figure it out now on my Mac.

is your DVD a data DVD or a regular DVD (ie does it contain VOB files or not).
If it does, you can follow Applemans Tip linked below

  • Using captured analogue video (avi) files

I have captured analogue video from an old camcorder via  pp6 .and  use cs4 to edit and produce dvd.
However , no matter what the settings  set  in the capture project the frame size remains at 320 x 240 with the  cs4 sequence  set at 720 x 576
Tried lots of changes in the  original capture and to the cs4 settings but cannot find solution.
I have previously successfully done this operation but cannot repeat it.
Maybe a very simple answer .
    Can anyone help.

What conversion hardware are you using, and what are the camera settings when you play the video to go to the capture device?
I used to use a Pinnacle DV500 card and the settings for DV AVI were for 720x480
