Capturing/Editing HDTV in imovie

Hi,
I have learned all about recording HDTV onto my Comcast DVR box and putting that on my powerbook via firewire. Everything works pretty well. I want to edit out commercials from an HD program and still retain as much picture quality as possible. I normally would use AVCvideocap/MPEG Streamclip to convert the .m2t file to .DV and import it into imovie for editing. Is this the best way for maintaining picture quality?
Thanks!

You can do simple editing right inside Streamclip. Select IN and OUT points and remove ads. Then save or export.

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • Import Edited Video Into iMovie 8.0.5

I have an edited movie that I created on a previous version of iMovie. I saved the movie to mini DV tape. I want to import the movie in its edited version to iMovie 8.0.5. When I import it, it puts the clips out of order, esp transitions and titles. It seems that there must be some timecode in the DV somewhere that iMovie 8.0.5 is using to reorder the fully edited video. The question is then: How do you import a fully edited movie into iMovie without it reordering it into clips. If there is no option to import the clip, then I will have to re-edit the entire movie -- a true waste of time. Please help. Robert.

Hello, Robert, and Welcome to the Discussions,
iMovie 9 (v 8.x) cannot import an earlier version of iMovie and keep its edits. You will get the clips, edited clips, photos, but no effects or titles, and all the transitions will be converted to cross-dissolves.
If you still have the previous iMovie version used to create that movie, you can export it as Quick Time Full Quality and import that QT movie into iMovie 09.

and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD.
I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

  • Special effects editing question for iMovie '09

    Hi,
I understand that iMovie '09 doesn't support many (any?) add-on software packages for special effects editing.
Meanwhile, I'm editing some sports clips in iMovie '09,, in which I'd love to have a "spotlight" on a player, (where the other action/background is dimmed), or use an arrow to point at a player---that sort of thing.
Is there a way to---say, do this edit in iMovie HD, or iMovie '06, with special software, then re-import it back into my iMovie '09 project?

    Ziatron,
Thanks for your reply. When you say you use iMovie '06 with iDVD 09 all the time---can you explain further? I guess I go back to my original question---Would iMovie '09 "accept" the edit done in iMovie HD or iMovie '06?
I do like the organizing layout (boxes with titles) much better on the previous versions, as well as some more detailed audio editing---but I'm grudgingly moved on to iMovie 09, and have already loaded a lot of my material (and keyworded them) into iMovie 09. I think I'm going to stick it out with this project.
Thanks in advance for any further advice you can share.

  • Edit .avi in iMovie

Warning: new Mac user, so be gentle.
I have an .avi 85MB clip that I want to edit in iMovie. It was filmed on a digital "still photography" camera. When I go to open it in QuickTime, it was playing just the audio; the video was just a white screen. Same thing happened when I imported clip into iMovie (audio fine, but no video).
So I read through these forums and found a suggestion to add the Perian.org component. As soon as I would open the file in QT or iMovie, the program would "unexpectedly" quit. I downloaded the VLC media player and can now view the video clip fine, but I still can't edit it in iMovies.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced. Some of you are VERY smart and resourceful; I'm amazed!

Before you can send the file to an app like iMovie it must first play correctly in QuickTime Player. Your file doesn't.
Open the file in the QuickTime Player and then open the Movie Info window.
In it you should see the video codec used in the file (Format:) and a Google search for codec name +Mac should help you find what you need.

  • From USB to IEEE-1394: question about HD capture, editing, sharing.

I’m new to editing video but have a question about capturing video into Premiere Elements 7. I have been using a Canon HF11 which shoots only in HD and only has USB output to copy video to my desktop. I don’t have a Blu-ray burner yet but I have burned a few projects to DVD, shared video on YouTube, and saved files in .avi and .mpeg to view on computer screens. But obviously I’m missing out on sharing HD on disk at this time. I just bought a Canon XH A1s which shoots both HD and SD on miniDV tapes. And uses IEEE-1394 cable for capturing (to Pre7). I did a 3 minute test project in SD and burned it on a DVD disk. I was very pleased at the results and the ease of editing. I don’t have any HD tapes yet, but when I do what differences will I experience from shooting in HD and then capturing, editing, then to sharing? My current HD processes with the HF11 is slow, occasional low-resources warnings, and less then pleasing results on DVD disks. Thanks for any and all comments and/or suggestions.

Your HF11 is AVCHD format and the Canon XH A1 is HDV MPEG2. AVCHD takes a lot more computer horespower to edit compared to HDV MPEG2... main reason being that AVCHD is more highly compressed giving small file sizes. This is also why you get the low resource and memory alarms while editing.
To shoot HD you do not need HD miniDV tapes you can use the standard miniDV tapes. However the HD tapes are supposed to give fewer drop-outs than the standard tapes but are considerable more expensive. With DV-AVI a drop out would be hardly noticed, but as HDV MPEG2 is a compressed format and the picture relies on information in a number of frames any drop-outs can give a second or so of bad video. That said I have had very few issues with drop-outs. If you are doing a wedding or something important that you do not want to risk then probably better to use a HD miniDV tape.
In the past the advise has been to capture in high definition to get the best quality and then downconvert in the camcorder and capture in DV-AVI... the reason being that older versions of Premiere Elements did not do a good job of the down conversion. Reports on PE7 indicate it is better and that you could use a HDV workflow and burn to DVD as a last stage. This also allows you to export a high definition version of your video to view on a monitor where you can appreciate the higher resolution. Or in the future when you have a Blu-ray burner and player you can burn the file to disc... save doing all the editing all over.

Not sure what you mean. You can import video into I Movie either via your USB slot if it is already in digital format or via your fire wire slot (you may need an adapter as the MAC slot is a mini slot, the adapters are available on line) if you are coming from tape based media.

    are you using REFRESH_DISPLAY method.
in the data_changed after the population.
And where you are calling that method
if it is in PAI , in the beginning then that would be fine. You need to use the REFRESH_DISPLAY after the update and you need to call the FLUSH method

No, what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode, your 2007 is simply too old and does not support it. TDM is discussed in the follow FAQ.

  • Backing up unedited family video: Should I capture using FCE or iMovie?

I have >50 hours of family video (kids) that I'm not ready to edit yet. I would like to capture the footage in order to back it up because it is priceless. My plan is to buy some large hard disks and save video there, and then when Blu-Ray comes out, I'll buy a Blu-Ray drive and burn Blu-Ray disks as an additional layer of safety.
The captured files will need to be in a format that lasts. As far as I can tell, both FCE and iMovie save captured clips as Quicktime files, which I'm guessing will be around for a while and compatible with future video editing apps. Both FCE and iMovie can import Quicktime clips. I'll be importing the entire hour of video from each tape, in a single capture.
    My question is this:
    If...
    (a) rendering doesn't bother me (like importing clips using iMovie then editing using FCE)
    (b) timecode isn't important to me (iMovie doesn't save timecode)
... is there any reason to capture the video using Final Cut instead of iMovie?
The only feature that FCE has that iMovie doesn't, is the ability to detect dropped frames during capture. Are there other reasons?
I like the fact that iMovie splits the capture into individual clips at each break and saves each clip as an individual file. If you're willing to do the work, FCE/FCP can do this to, using DV Start/Stop detect, making the segments into subclips, then exporting them as individual clips. FCP makes this a practical possibility using batch export, whereas FCE lacks that feature and exporting each clip one by one is impractical (I have maybe 200 individual clips per hour of tape). But this is a task I plan for later. Right now my concern is finding the "best way" to capture and save all this video for later editing.
I guess I could also ask, should timecode be important to me? My tapes contain a lot of timecode breaks, so recapturing video from tape automatically isn't likely to work well. I don't know any other reason timecode might be important for consumer-level family video.

    Anthony,
while I fully agree with Al answer, let me add one note in favor of iMovie in answering your original specific question (note: I'm a quite happy user of FCE for all its advantages over iMovie, but for the point I'm going to make).
The basic difference between FCE and iMovie in scene detection (based on the same principle of using date/time breaks as dividers), is that iMovie creates as many media files as clips during capture itself, while FCE Subclips are created AFTER the capture of a unique media file, using DV Start/Stop Detect and Make Subclip, that does NOT splits files.
So you'd better consider now if recovering unused disk space, by trashing unused clips, will be a major issue for you in the future, when you'll be editing your movies. If so, keep in mind that this job is very simple if you captured with iMovie and then imported its clips to FCE (and if you confirm you don't mind about TC and audio rendering), while it is quite complex if you captured directly with FCE, and, I'd say, not recommended unless absolutely needed.

  • Capturing screen shots in iMovie

    Hi,
I want to capture screen shots of my movie in iMovie to have still images from different scenes to then edit in photoshop. Is this possible, or do I need to get specific software for that? Does anybody know how to capture screen shots from an iMovie?
    Thanks,
    quadruple

Position your cursor where you want the still.
Right-click and select ADD STILL TO PROJECT
You will see the still added to the en of your project.
Now right-click on the still and select SHOW IN FINDER
In the finder, right click on the still JPEG file and select COPY.
Now you can paste the still onto your desktop or a folder of your choice and import into iPhoto or Photoshop.
If you don't want to clutter your video project with stills at the end, you can start a new project for just the stills. Then you place the cursor within your EVENT at the point you want a still. Then Right-click and select ADD Still TO PROJECT. This keeps things tidy.

    hi kyle,
sorry, but just to elaborate on your response a little while ago here:
    - i captured the 24PA footage using the advanced pulldown
    - i captured the 24P footage using no pulldown
    - i am editing in a 29.97 timeline now, as most of my footage was shot with 24P
please let me know your thoughts on how i should go about working with this footage!
