Capturing footage into CS4

Hi there,
I am attempting to capture HD footage from my SOny HDR HC5E into Premier CS4 on my mac book pro.
Each time I capture it, the footage comes up as offline and there is always an error each time I capture it.
ANy suggestions?
Cheers
Amy

Ah, of course it was a simple matter of the i link settings on the camera.  Basically I just had to change the 'i link conv' button to 'OFF'.
As simple as that really

  • Can no longer import mp4 (XDCAM) footage into CS4

Hopefully somebody will be able to help me with this!
I am trying to import some Sony EX1 (mp4) footage into Premiere CS4, but am getting the following error message:
“file import failure: Error message – the importer reported a generic error”
I have done this process on many occasions over the last year or so and experienced no problems whatsover.
But for some reason I am no longer able to import the mp4 files...or even access these file types in historic projects!
I have checked the footage in the Sony clip browser in it seems fine, and plays fine when opened with a VLC player, so am a bit stumped to what the problem could be.
(For info, I am using a PC with 8gb RAM and a Quadro CX. I did have After Effects installed a month ago back and switched to VISTA. All Adobe updates have been installed, and I have sufficient memory)
Thanks in advance for any pointers or assistance

Of course using Premiere CS3 I have the problem of the audio constantly cutting out on the XDCAM MP4 files, so I really could do with a solution to this problem in CS4 asap - can anyone else help?
It is definitely a new problem for me, which almost certainly revolves around the impoter process. It did not affect my editing until 2-3 months ago but suddenly now renders CS4 Premiere more or less useless, on both on my laptop and my main PC.
It is possible that the problem only affects projects where one of the XDCAM files is very long and/or was originally saved across two separate cards at the time of recording. In which case it may not be a new problem, simply one I had not encountered before because I'd notg used any such long files.

  • Import CS3 AVI Footage into CS4

I'm trying to import some footage that I captured on my PC in CS3, into my Mac in CS4. When I open the project that was created in CS3 (PC), on my CS3 (Mac) it comes through fine. But when I convert the project and open it in CS4 (Mac), it wants to render all of the footage in the timeline. Which means the sequence settings aren't matching the footage. Even though the sequence settings are the same as those I used in CS3. Not sure what's going on.
Reason I capture the footage on my PC to begin with is because CS3 and CS4 still will not capture my DVX-100 24p footage correctly on a Mac. So this is my only solution at the time being. I have 34 hours of AVI footage that I'd really like to edit in CS4. Any help would be much appreciated!

Bill, thanks for your response. Sorry for the delay in getting back. The mis-match is precisely what I'm trying to figure out and fix. My sequence presets are as follows:
    GENERAL
    Editing Mode: Quicktime DV 24p
    Timebase: 23.976 frames/second

Not sure why the properties show that the clip is 29.97fps, becuase when I single click a clip it shows up as 23.976 up above. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

  • How to import 30p 1920x1080 footage into cs4

    Hi,
I shot some footage using my canon hf20 in 30p, at 1920x1080. when i open a new sequence i don't see a setting for 1920x1080 30p under AVCHD.
at first i was going to use the XDCAM HD preset since it's the only one i see that has 30p, but i realized that it's 1440x1080, not 1920x1080.
how else to import 30p 1920x1080 into premiere CS4?
    1) will the 1080i30 (60i) setting preserve the 30p progressive footage (even though the option is listed in premiere pro under 1080 interlaced)?
    2) or is the only way to edit 30p progressive at 1920x1080 is to select the AVCHD 1080p 24p setting and change the frame rate to 29.97?
    3) or is there some other trick altogether?
    thanks.

thanks for the replies. so does the 1080i30 (60i) setting do some kind of de-interlacing on 30p footage, even if it's not native and it's wrapped in 60i (like it is in the canon hf20)? or does the camera do that automatically?

  • Importing RED camera footage into CS4

I've downloaded a plug in for CS4 and all the other RED camera footage imported in fine (9 out of 10 files) expect for the last file. Here's a picture of the file names:
When I try to import these files (either through file > import) or Media Browser I get the message that the file format is not supported. Does anybody have any idea of what I could do?
    Thanks!

    Robodog2,
I finally got back to my office and was able to send JIm a screenshot of the issue as the file was too big to send (1GB).
The file marked A010_C001_10172V_001.R3D is the one that should import into Premiere Cs4 but as you can tell from the screen shot above, it will not.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Capturing footage into FCP - Which settings to choose?

    Hi there
I have filmed something in 4:3 which will be for the web and I am unsure of what settings I should capture the footage in. Whether it should be DV PAL, DV PAL Anamorphic (which my Final Cut is set to anyway) or whether I need to change it to DAV PAL 4:3, or maybe it doesnt matter? Where abouts do I find these settings in the menu?
I am fairly new to Final Cut, so please excuse my ignorance!
    Thank you for your help

    Hi there,
    Welcome to the discussion area.
The ratio of your video is already telling you what you are dealing with, however,
I think a couple of links will help you in understanding the basics:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/understanding_169.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/project_setup_fcp6balis.html
Remember that in Easy Setup (FCP main menu>FCP>Easy setup) you specify the type of project
    you will be dealing with.
Read the manual too (Main menu>help>User manual then type keywords at will).

  • Hang upon importing footage into premiere cs4 using iMac

    hello,
Ive been trying to import some footage into adobe premiere cs4 on the iMac. This is the first time I've ever used adobe premiere on the imac. When i try to import anything (ie: import an avi file, sequence, or old adobe premiere project) the program just hangs for hours.
I had been working on a project in adobe premiere on the windows. Then i took that project and transferred it over to the mac by copying and pasting the files through a server. When i try to import anything at all, again, it hangs.
I;d appreciate any help with this.'Thanks

Below is from Wikipedia and there are two links at the bottom that specifiy AVCHD Lite.  Although I see you have already tried one of them...
AVCHD UpShift is a Windows-based conversion utility from NewBlueFX that allows batch coversion of AVCHD originated footage into high bitrate MPEG .m2t files for editing any HD / MPEG2 capable NLE.
FFDshow is a free, Open Source collection of codecs, including AVCHD.[28]
Another product is CoreAVC, a reasonably cheap and quick h.264 decoder for Windows, which can decode AVCHD as well as a variety of other h.264 formats.
Nero Vision can convert AVCHD files to other formats such as MPEG-2 or AVI and can import them for use in video editing projects. Nero Vision can also export Sony's M2TS format to MPEG-4 files that can be viewed by Quicktime 7.
There is a transcoder to convert AVCHD into P2[29], which is a format you can import into Avid's MXF file format. The transcoder was created by Main Concept and is distributed free of charge by Panasonic. Version 1.1 and earlier will convert AVCHD media from any camera, while version 1.2 and higher is locked to only work with AVCHD media created with Panasonic cameras.
Latest version VAIO Editing Components that pre-loaded with Sony VAIO PCs can serve as a plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro 2 to support AVC-HD import/export and editing.
DVDFlick is a free, Open Source Application for burning to DVD [30]
Splash player is a media player with very fast H.264/AVC decoder based on GPU or multicore CPU
AVS Video Converter can convert AVCHD into a number of different formats. (mov/mpg/avi/mp4/flv/3gp/rm)
Roxio Toast 10 Titanium on Mac OS X will convert AVCHD to any format your computer has installed.
VoltaicHD will convert AVCHD Lite format to a number of different formats (for OS-X and Windows).
HandBrake will convert AVCHD Lite format to AVI, MP4, MKV and OGM (tested on OSX; other versions available)

  • How to capture HD in CS4?

Before I ask my question, I'm going to apologize in advance for being a ignorant, uninformed Forum member.  So, that being said, please don't flame me for asking such basic questions and not already knowing about HD.
I dumped my old DVStorm card back when Canopus was bought by Grass Valley and "they" stopped support for Premiere drivers and started pushing their editing software.  Since I shoot in SD, I didn't see the need to purchase another capture card like Matrox, if I could use a standard IE1394 connection with my JVC DV deck to capture my SD DV footage from DVmini tapes.   Alas .... now HD is really cranking up and my last camera purchase is HD capable.  So.... here goes the questions...
Do you have to have a HDMI input into your computer to 'capture' HD?  [I shot some HD (1080i) test footage with my Sony and tried to import it into PPCS4.   Since I know my JVC DV deck won't read HD, I hooked up my Sony cam via a DV (IE1394) cable.   Although PP will let me control my camera in VCR mode (fast forward, rewind, etc.) it won't 'capture' the HD footage.   If I set my camera to 'convert' the HD footage to DV widescreen, PP will allow me to capture the footage, but if I'm going to have to 'convert' HD to DV widescreen, why not just shoot it in DV widescreen?]
Am i just doing something wrong when I try to capute HD footage in CS4?  I created a new HD/1080i project, then use PPCS4 capture.
If a HDMI (or some other HD input like SDI) is required, is there a 'stand alone card' like a IE1394 card I can purchase or is that type of input only available via a 3rd part capture card like the Matrox?   Here's the deal, my computer is a 'miniTower' and there's not enough physical room inside the case for the full size Matrox card.  I see that Matrox has come out with a MX02 version (http://www.videoguys.com/Search/Search.aspx?Query=MXO2MINI) which maby be a solution for me if the HDMI input is necessary.
    Thanks,
    jd

Personally, I would suspect the problem is your system and hard drives are not fast enough to capture HD.
SD to DVD capture daterate requirement is about 7 Mbytes per second, which most consumer level computers can JUST handle.
Depending on resolution, framerate, and capture card, HD requires a bare bare minimum of 15 Mb/sec to as much as 300 Mb/sec
Any computer less than a workstation is normally not capable of handling even the bare minimum, unless, you install 2 identical hard drives connected a RAID controller, which will increase the datarate by at least 50-60 % or more depending on your computer and the controller you get, and which hard drives you get. The black Western Digital is the best on the market for this, and quite affordable, as are RAID controllers for them.
You're lucky you could not even attempt to capture HD with what you have because that could very probably have caused your capturing hard drive in to safe slow mode that you can never recover it from, you can only hope to get whatever files off it that you absolutely have to save, and then toss that hard drive on the scrap heap.

  • Unable to capture files into external hard disk because of 'drop frames '

I haven't been able to capture footage from my DV camcoder thru firewire to an external hard disk in FCP because i get a message saying 'drop frames were detected'.
This happens when i selected this external hard drive as the scratch disk in FCP.
When i deslect it and select my user hard disk as the scratch disk, the capturing works perfectly. But i just want to capture all my capture files into the external hard disk, not my user hard disk.
The external hard disk's speed is 3500 - could that be the problem? Is it too slow? Its connected thru USB and it is Mac Os Extended Journaled. Its got 250gb of space, so that's not the issue.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thank you.

No, its a Panasonic gs180, a really good camera.
The camera itself is connected to my computer through firewire. Its the hard disk enclosure that is connected to my emac through USB. Anyway, i'm sure that's not the problem, casue like i said, the capturing works fine when i use my user hard disk as the FCP scratch disk.
The problem i have is when i try to capture footage from my camera to the external hard disk enclosure. When i press 'capture now' and press play, the playback stutters and a messsage appears saying, "drop frames detected" and the capturing stops.
I feel like i need to adjust something in FCP itself - like a preference or something - just not sure what.
Thnx for your suggestion though and if you know what i should do, please let me know.

  • Reposting this - bringing dvd footage into FCP - progressive scan

I occasionally have clients that need me to bring footage into their projects from a dvd or vhs. I'm looking into getting something that can do both NTSC & PAL and I've come across this product:
    Sharp DV-NC80
    6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VHS/S-VHS VCR & DVD, CD-R, V-CD Combo Player - Multi System, Multi Zone
My only dilemma is that the dvd player does not have progressive scan. Can anyone let me know if that should matter or not and what progressive scan is for? (I read the jagged edge article, but does progressive scan affect how FCP digitizes dvd material as well?) Thank you.

Unless you are bringing the material in via a capture card, you can't take advantage of the 480p scanrate anyway...

  • How do I get HVX200 footage into Final Cut 4.5?

This may be a redundant question, and I am currently in the process of waiting for my upgrade to Final Cut Studio to arrive in the mail, but in the meantime, just received a HVX200 camera in the mail yesterday and was wondering if it is possible to get the footage in my computer. I followed the instructions in the operation manual and my G5 did recognize the camera as a separate drive via Firewire on the desktop which is full of .mxf files. Being new to HD video, I just did a basic Firewire hook-up from the camera straight into the computer and hoped that I would be able to capture the footage via Final Cut 4.5 HD. Obviously I was wrong. After doing some research, I've seen several ways of getting the footage into the system, most of which refer to the latest version of Final Cut Studio, but nothing much on how to get it into 4.5 other than some confusing mentions of somehow converting the footage in Quicktime files. If the .mxf files can be converted into Quicktime and then edited in Final Cut 4.5 until my upgrade arrives in the mail, can someone please help me with this? The bad news is as of now I only have Mac OS X version 10.3.7. I do plan on upgrading very soon, but was curious if it is still possible to make the HD footage editable on the system I currently are running - 10.3.7 and FC 4.5. If anybody could help, I would appreciate it very much.
    Mac G5 Dual-Processor with Final Cut HD 4.5   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Do I have to be running the latest version of Tiger for this to work? I ask because the new Quicktime download method did not work from OS 10.3.9. Maybe I'm still doing something wrong. Either way, I'm completely confused. First of all, what mode does the HVX200 need to be in? MCR/VCR or PC/DUB mode? My main question is how to convert those .mxf files into editable and viewable Quicktime files. Can I select a "convert" option somewhere? Am I overlooking something here completely? The thing that baffles me is the Firewire cable running from the tower to the camera displays the HVX200 files on my desktop under a white-drive icon that reads "no name". I just so badly want to grab them and convert them to editable Quicktime files that my 4.5 Version of Final Cut will import and recognize. Looks like that would be a relatively easy thing to do, but apparently not. Honestly, all that I got out of the link that you attached was apparently just how to upgrade to the latest version of Quicktime which would recognize "XL1" footage, not HVX200 HD footage. The posting didn't appear to be directed towards the HVX200/FCP 4.5 solely.
In your original posting, you mentioned that FCP 4.5 would actually allow HVX200 footage in or at least knew a way to go about getting the footage into a system like mine. My question is, from your personal experience, can you give me a more accurate step-by-step description of what I need to do from hooking up the HVX200 to the G5 tower via Firewire and so on....
It just seems that only upgrading Quicktime doesn't really get me anywhere near where I need to be. As I just try to figure out the common-sense of this all, it sounds like the computer IS recognizing the camera and the P2 card - hence the icon the appears on my desktop full of my video files labeled as .mxf files. So from here, the only thing that I can figure is that the only way to see my clips are to convert those files into another file (such as Quicktime) that FCP 4.5 wouldn't have any trouble reading??? CORRECT???? Seems like this is the only way it's gonna fly on the system I have...until I get the FCS upgrade. That said, I've got a two week wait and I'm impatient to watch my footage on my high quality Apple monitor!!
Sorry to be a bother about this, but any additional help is welcomed!

  • Iphone footage into Final Cut Express

I left a question earlier in this forum and would like to update (hopefully that's proper process!). I'll repeat the question, in case:
I'm trying to get footage from iPhone 4 to Final Cut Express. I'm using MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2. In the tutorial I found, they did an export to Quicktime, selecting the Apple Intermediate Codec as the compression, 29.97 as the Frame, and "1280 x 720 (unscaled)" as the frame size option (I'm also selecting frame blending and better downscaling, and turning off interlaced scaling; the rest are Streamclip defaults). My version of Streamclip doesn't have a 1280x720 (unscaled), so I've been forced to select 1280x720 (HDTV 720P). Not sure if this is my problem.
On recent attempts, I've managed to get the clip into a QuickTime format (using the settings above) in a way that doesn't look stretched (can't tell whether it is or not). When I import the clip into FCE, it comes in without having to be rendered, and looks as if it's not stretched there either. But as soon as I drop the clip into the sequence and try to play it, I get the "Dropped Frames" warning. I'm already operating in RT Safe mode, and rarely/never have problems w/ dropped frames with clips that were captured from my Sony camera/tape. Is the AIC codec more demanding of faster drives? (I'm using a 200Gig external Apple drive at the moment). Or is it because I have been forced to export as a 1280x720 HDTV 720p as opposed to unscaled?
In FCE I've set easy set up to:
Apple Intermediate Codec, 29.97, and HDV AIC 720 p30; Is this a match with the Export QT version?
And if so, would the clip be coming into my sequence without having to be rendered? Since I haven't had to upgrade my hardware for my other camera, I'd be reluctant to go out and buy more external disk power, in the event it doesn't do me any good.
I know there are several posts on people trying to get iphone footage into FCE already, but they don't seem to apply and, after hours on the internet looking for a solution, I'm at my wits end. PLEASE HELP
    Thanks in advance!!

The 4s records video as MPEG4/AVC (H.264)/1080p/30fps in a .mov filetype.   Final Cut Express is NOT designed to edit this kind of video.  You need to convert the 4s video clips to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec/1080i before importing them into FCE.  You can use MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion.  In FCE you also need to select a matching Easy Setup (should be AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 for converted 4s clips) and create a new Sequence to edit your video.  This should eliminate the constant re-rendering problem.
ps.  Final Cut Express was discontinued in 2011 even before OS X Lion was released. It is no longer supported by Apple and there is no guarantee it will run properly on Yosemite.  Just so you know.  Final Cut Pro X is the currently supported app.

  • Capturing footage form HDR FX7 to Final Cut Pro 5.1

    Hi Guys,
I think my posts are borring as I didn't get almost any replies. But I still need to figure out what to do with my new Sony HDR FX7 and how I can get the footage out to FCP 5.1
I've posted the details of what I've done in another thread here it is:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4655824#4655824
I just retured from the apple store and I was told to meet with one of the final cut pro gurus during my one to one lessons. But the earliest I can do that would be a week from now. I was also told that because it's Sony, there is known problem with capturing HDV into FCP. However, there's seems to be some sort of "patch" or program that you can download (probably a patch for FCP that enables you to capture from Sony HDR FX7.
Do any of you know that the apple store guys are talking about?
Where can I get this patch? What should I do?
I've tried the HDR FX7 on FCP 6 and the result is the same, it captures only first 2 seconds of the full hdv. Please help. Your responce is highly, highly appreciated.
    Thank you,

Please do not double post. It confuses the natives and clutters the issue.
If you have something to add to an existing thread, just add it to the thread, don't start yet another one.
    cheers,
