CApturing from an HD DVR source

Does anyone know of a way, or equipment needed to capture HD footage from a HD-DVR source directly into FCP?

David, please read my original post. I am orchestrating this for the network, not vice-versa. "We" refers to the network and everyone who works here. I've been a full-time consultant for this network for sometime now and have increased the production several times over using the resources available. Alternate video is not yet a big profitable business, so budgets and resources remain limited (and should until sufficient revenue is generated). Limited resources often require creative means - i.e. "jerry rigging."
The original source is all analog (i.e. tape based, as you suggest), and all production is done by an outsourced company in a different building. For example, if we're airing a news program it is preferable that I create a production process that can capture segment by segment in an all digital workflow and publish to the networks web site, mobile partners, etc. while the show is still on air. If we wait for the original source, we have to wait for the show to end, the resulting tapes to be checked in a library, walk across the street to check them out of the library, walk back and encode the tape in real-time... This process takes hours and is significantly less efficient than an all digital production process. You can't encode and distribute much content using a tape based production process.
So, instead of arguing semantics I'd prefer to focus on the question at hand... do you have experience capturing or transferring video using HDDVR-to-Mac.

  • Can i capture from an analog 16x9 source

Can i capture from an analog 16x9 HD source (SAT-TV) using analog (S-Video) output using a Canopus ADVC-100 into FCP 4.x and preserve the anamorphic aspect ratio? If so, how do I go about doing this (meaning, if this will even work - I'm fairly certain that the SAT box will output the 16x9 flag on s-video - what settings do i use in FCP to capture that aspect?
    Thanx in advance.

actually i am allowed to record from TV... i'm using the analog to do this. HRA allows me to do this - There are plenty of units out there that have tivo and a dvd burner that are legal) - all I'm doing is using my mac. Remember the VCR? this is no different as I am not going digital to digital or bypassing any DRM. Not to mention, I'm taping some docs that aren't even avaialble to purchase. ;(
Also, its just for my personal use. Just to have an archive of the show.
I'm using sledgehammer erquipment to just archive a show.. hehe

  • Problem capturing from a Sony DVR-HC51e

    Hi there,
as it says, I can't seem to get FCE to recognise my handycam. It's a Mini DV PAL camera and is connected by a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire (it's the only wire I could find to fit the port). I've went through all the DV settings n the Easy Setup menu and I continue to get a message saying:
Unable to Locate the Following External Devices:
    Apple FireWire PAL (720x576)
Your system configuration may have changed... etc.
So I can't figure out how to change that external device thing other than the Easy Setup menu. If anyone can help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it.

    Heya,
    It's a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    320GB Serial ATA @ 7200
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
(lol, pasted directly from the website)
It runs on Mac OS X(10.5.6)
The camera's a Sony DVR-HC51e Handycam Mini DV PAL and is connected with a 4 pin to 9 pin FireWire. I switched the camera to the video player.
It's Quicktime version 7.6 and Final Cut Express 4.
Final Cut is set to DV-PAL in the Easy Setup menu, though I did go through the others.
    thanks.

  • GoldenGate Downstream Integrated capture from SQL Server 2012 as source

    Hi,
Previously, I had done OGG integrated capture from downstream mining database. In that case SourceDB, Downstream MiningDB and TargetDB, all databases were Oracle.
MiningDB was in sync with source for log shipping and OGG extract was hooked with MiningDB to capture changes and apply on targetDB by replicat.
This time, I am looking for similar solution for SourceDB as MS SQL Server 2012. Exploring my options as I am not allowed to let OGG extract directly capture from source database.
I have to come up with a solution where source database can ship logs to another location (miningDB) and let OGG extract capture from there.
What could be my options ??? Appreciate your suggestions???
    Thanks
    Neetu

    Hi,
You can move post to Golden Gate forum and also add following more information:
I see you are using Integrated it means the version is either 11 or higher.
    1, Add GG version   11/12 ?
    2. Add Oracle DB Version 10/11/12
In Oracle downstream, basically you ship the archive logs to the downstream server but have you thought how is the transnational logs handled in SQL Server ?

  • Capturing From Two Different Sources

Hello, how reliable is it to capture from two different sources using the following sceario:
    1. Powerbook G4 15" Using the digital optical audio input for sound and using the DV 1394 Input for DV video
    2. In FCP, selecting "Digital Optical Input" for AUDIO and DV for video
    3. Hit capture now since it is going to be recorded live
    Any thoughts folks?
Trying to avoid bying the firestore $8,000 solution

    Hi,
I don't see any problems in that scenario - if your disc is fast enough, that is! I've never worked with a G4 Powebook but in theory, it all comes down to the spped of the storage you have. The safest scenariio, az suggested above, would be to try it beforehand. You should also considerthe length of the live recording as opposed to the disc space you have. I don't know about the "firestore" solution but a firewire "LaCie" external disc is a cheap solution and it works fine with the G4 Powebook. Another issue is what FCP compressor to use during capture! Try it!

  • How do I capture 16:9 video from an s-video source (CS6)?

I work for a church and we live stream and record our services each week. Our live stream looks fine (in 16:9) but we are outputting to adobe premiere cs6 with an s-video cable. When I capture it only allows 4:3 capture and it squeezes everything. It's absolutely terrible. Can anyone help me please??  Thanks!

    S-Video into Premiere?
Are you using a third-party capture card or looping through a deck?
Is the signal coming directly from a single camera or from a switcher?
Regardless, S-Video does not carry an HD signal.
Premiere alone is only capable of capturing SD or HDV video by Firewire,
and both are 4x3 aspect ratio.
16x9 HD video must be imported, not captured.
    note:
If you are looping through a HDV deck for capture,
you should just go ahead and record to HDV tapes,
then capture from the deck to Premiere via Firewire.

  • I would like to capture from several different sources simultaneously.

Is this realistic with one computer or would it be better to purchase additional units for capturing as well. And if I was using them primarily for the purpose of capturing as well as networking for the sake of speeding up compressor would any of the smaller systems be adequate?
(I could possibly need to capture from up to 4 devices at the same time)

What Randy and David say is true.
    Here's my story.
For the last few summers, I pick one day to do a sunrise to sunset time lapse capture from the deck of my lake cottage. The camera looks out across the back lawn, to the dock, the lake and the hills on the far side - about 1/2 mile away. The sky is an enormous presence.
The first time I did this was a spur of the moment lark - a "wouldn't it be cool if" moment. I had a camera, a tripod, my laptop and software which could capture using time lapse. I hooked things up quickly, turned everything on and voilà. The video turned out wonderfully. Each year since, the production has gotten a a bit more involved.
    Last year ...
I watched the weather reports daily. I went online tracking weather patterns moving across the continent. This was all undertaken to pinpoint the day when we would likely get the perfect combination of sky, light clouds, strong sun, wind and water.
It looked like the day was coming. The evening before I placed the camera on a weighted and braced tripod in a secure area on the back porch. It was under cover and secured to keep it from moving if there was a breeze. The area was cordoned to keep people from walking on that part of the deck to prevent vibrations. The laptop computer went inside the house on a very secure table. The camera and computer were both connected to house power but each had a fully charged battery attached if we lost power.
I ran a 3 meter Granite Digital firewire cable from the camera outside to the laptop computer in the house. All cables were taped down or routed so there was no possibility for someone to trip over them. The firewire cable was connected to the laptop via a PCMCIA firewire card and there was an external FW400 drive connected via the computer's OEM port to hold the captured material. The drive was bus powered so even if we lost power, the computer's battery would keep things going.
Before I went to bed, I insulated and covered the camera with a waterproof setup to keep it from getting wet from condensation or there was an unexpected thunderstorm during the night.
Up before dawn, I uncovered the camera and had the capture running when the first light showed in the eastern sky. It was a spectacular sunrise.
After breakfast, I checked on the setup. It was humming along so I went for a swim, ran errands in town, played a round of golf.
It was a beautiful day. The clouds were marching across the sky, the lake had small ripples as wind played on the surface. The sun was strong which generated sharp shadows marking the passage of time. The whole day I was thinking, "we nailed it, this is THE PERFECT day to capture".
Late afternoon, I came into the house and on my way upstairs to take a shower and change for dinner, I noticed the laptop. The cover was closed. I had left it open. With my heart racing, I opened the lid and the computer woke up ...
Someone - (no one ever admitted to touching the machine - even under threats of withholding all ice cream) - closed the lid and the machine went to sleep. There was no capture as the temp file ended up without an EOF marker. All that I had to show for the day was a several hundred MB unrecoverable file.
The next day dawned with a foggy rain that hung on for the last few days of vacation ...
    good luck,
    x

  • Log and Capturing from USB device?

I have a VHS connected to my G5 using an InterView RCA to USB device. Is it possible to log and capture into FCP5? I seem to be getting the sound okay, but can't get the video.

You can't capture to FCP without timecode.<<</div>
Not true. You can easily capture non-timecoded footage from any number of sources, including VHS. Set FCP's device control to "Non-Controlable Device" and use "Capture Now." The source player will need to be connected to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter).
    VHS decks don't generate timecode<<</div>
Also not true. Most pro VHS and S-VHS VTRs have both VITC and LTC capability.

  • Capture from Two Tables and Apply in one Table

    Hi All,
Is it possible to capture from two tables (master and child table) and apply in one table?
    For example,
    1. DEPT and EMP tables in source database with relation
DEPT table structure is like DEPT_ID, DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
    EMP table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID
    2. EMP_DEPT_STAGING in destination database
    EMP_DEPT_STAGING table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID. DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
if there is any update in DEPT table, EMP_DEPT_STAGING should get populated with Department and its employee details. Similarly, if there is any update in EMP table EMP_DEPT_STAGING table should get populated with Employee details and along with department detail.
Is it possible to accomplish this? If yes, could you please provide me some examples?
    Thanks & Regards
    Thiyagu

  • Image capture from avi vfw device can't find video modes

    Hello
Here my issu, i have implemented image capture from a video device using jmf 2.1.1e performancepack, using a webcam everything is fine but when i use the video capture source i want to use i can only work with format 720x480 pal and i require 720x576 pal.
jmf seem not to reconize video format from this source, but the video is correcty displayed and image correctly captured. I'm surprised it is half working:decoding&render is ok to but not format choice.
I have check it is not because i'm in ntsc mode (ntsc is 720x480) because my analogic source is pal and color are correct (if with device software i change to ntsc mode i have a black&with but using jmf i'm in color so i'm in pal mode)
Difference bettween the webcam and my device is that my device is an avi encoder so in jmf webcam is javax.media.format.YUVFormat and my device com.sun.media.format.AviVideoFormat

  • Capturing from Digi-Beta or Mini-DV

Our first two projects were supplied to us on Digi-Beta, but for ease (we don't have a Digi-Bet deck) we had these transferred to Mini DV which we then captured into Final Cut Pro using the DV preset.
Does anybody believe there would be a significant improvement if we were to hire in a Digi-Beta deck and capture direct at full res (we'd probably need a RAID for this?), and then export to DVD Studio Pro?
Considering how compressed DVD/MPEG2 is, we'd be interested to know if there would indeed be a discernible difference in picture quality/sharpness.

You'd need a Raid or at least a firewire 800 drive which can play back a single track of 10 bit.
I would think a mpeg created from an original 10 bit media source would look a little cleaner than a dv dub of that source. How much cleaner? That would probably be up to your to decide. I'm sure one of the more tech oriented guys could say what the exact difference could be...
I bring dv in as 10 bit from an original dv source because I do lots of filters and graphic stuff. To me, even dv brought in at 10 bit looks better than dv brought in at dv, but different people have put up engineering specs to show that there is not a discerenable difference. In my mind, I can see a difference in color and gradations of color...to me it is worth it.
I guess the question is how much more image quality do you need and is it worth the price of the hardware?
Do a test. Get a minute or two of digibeta captured for you somewhere and bring it through the dvd creation workflow. Do the same with a dub of the same footage and check 'em out side by side.

  • Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks?

Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks? Or does it start capturing with time code from the tape and then just keeps rolling regardless of TC breaks on the tape, thus not matching code after the first TC break?  I don't see any preferences where you can ask it to regenerate the code  it is writing based on the code it's receiving from the tape (i.e. continuous jam). I'm guessing it just keeps on going with the code it started with. Anyone know different?
    Thanks!

It is not clear from your post what you want FCP to do when it encounters the timecode break on the tape that it is ingesting.
    You have three choices:
If you choose "Make New Clip" then FCP will stop, roll the tape forward to legitimate code, and then attempt a pre-roll and start capturing again. The new clip will have timecode that corresponds to the timecode on the tape.
If you choose "Warn After Capture", FCP will keep ingesting and the timecode will continue contiguously from the source code of your starting clip, meaning it won't match the tape after the point of the break.

I think you should start the processor, just after the datasink is started.
    datasink.satrt();
    p.start();
Try it and ask again if it's not the problem.

  • Non drop from a drop frame source

(back story) We search footage from proxy files then recapture at full rez
I logged footage and made new batch capture log files. I went to capture the footage and FCP said I was about to capture non drop frame footage from a drop frame source. It doesn't do this if i log with a tape in the deck.
So my question is, how can I make logs without tapes in the decks and then batch capture and not have this problem?

when you log from a tape in the deck FCP, the communication between FCP and the deck lets FCP know whether the source is Drop or non drop code.
When you log by hand you need to tell FCP whether the code is drop or non drop
Generally speaking colons in the TC means non drop and semicolons denotes drop frame.
What codes are your proxies showing?
