Capturing from an Internal DVD player

Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro & FCE 3.5. Is it possible to capture using my laptop's internal DVD player or can I only capture using an external DVD player hooked up with firewire?
Thanks,
Lisa

You can't capture from any DVD player without converting the material. It's in completely the wrong format. You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime with the DV codec.

I was trying to burn a DVD from files in a burn folder. They were pictures from my Nikon camera. I can play videos and movies from the same dvd player.    Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Thanks for your reply:
I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

  • Playing movies from iphone to dvd player

Is it possible to have movies on iPhone and with the appropriate cords connect it my portable DVD player and watch the movies on a bigger screen?

Here is an article from the apple support website that might help out.

  • No video when playing disc burned from iDVD on DVD player

I've tried for the first time to burn a DVD (TV shows purchased on iTunes) and followed the directions from the iDVD help guide, but when I try to play on my external DVD player there's no video, only audio. I saw a couple posts where people had video and no audio, but not the opposite. How do I resolve? I'm using Memorex DVD-R discs and am not very technologically savvy.

    Hi fitzmonster
Welcome to apple discussions. Just to add to the already good advice mentioned above. I do have a question. By any chance are you using Memorex Dvd's? If so, it simply adds one more variable to an already bad equation. Try Verbatim or Maxell instead.
Given the lack of recent updates to iDvd, seems to me Apple is currently focused on streaming content from your Mac to your TV thru such products as iTunes and their latest AppleTV. iDvd doesn’t always fit into this mix. In comparison, iDvd is dated / old technology centered entirely on standard definition TV. Their latest AppleTV is well beyond this.
Also there are many products out there that work rather well together and may be better matched on your mac other than iTunes, AppleTV and iDvd. One must keep in mind that iDvd is not really intended as a general purpose burn utility. Toast may be a better choice here but neither iDvd nor Toast will circumvent DRM.
So the question we need to ask is, How well do all three apple apps / products mentioned above play together? Are they in harmony? IMHO the answer is no .... mainly because iDvd is rather dated technology. Hence, as a consumer I do think it's smart to look elsewhere / at other products /options if the intention is to burn TV Programs to Dvd-R ... as opposed to streaming content from a mac to your TV or iPod.
Like I said, Roxio Toast is a reasonable choice but Elgato combined with EyeTV3 software is even better one. It's better because it’s written and built around recording TV shows / programs. That and it's not limited to iTunes.

  • How do I import video from an external DVD player?

I got married yesterday! The DVD of the ceremony is 3". Won't play in the iMac. What kind of cable do I need to convert the output of a standard DVD player (which does play it) into USB input for the iMac?
    Thanks!

Congratulations... but should you really be posting on Internet sites this soon??
I'm with J D on the best solution however to directly answer your question the solution is the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid (link) which as well as providing an S-Video/Composite Video to USB adaptor also turns your iMac in to a Digital TV/TV Recorder.
The USB conversion will likely be lower quality than if you use an external DVD drive and OpenShiiva (link); which converts DVD to mp4 (mp4 can be imported to iMovie if you need that or converted for iPod etc).
Otherwise MtR as suggested just copies the DVD contents to hard disk and can be played in DVD Player.

  • Importing home movies from my IMac's internal DVD player

I've been reading some of the posts which I think are related to my question and it looks like this is going to be complicated. I have some home movies on a DVD. The files on the DVD are grouped into two folders labeled "Audio-TS" and "Video-TS." In the audio folder there are no files and in the video folder there are a number of files with names such as "VTS010.IFO" or "VTS010.BUP" or VTS011.V0B" etc. I've downloaded free software called "mpegstramclip" and I've purchased from Apple a program called "MPEG2." Am I on the right track in my efforts to import these home movies into IMovie HD so I can edit them?

Thank you Karstein and please excuse the double post. My first post was on the IMovie HD6 page and I meant to post it on the IMovie HD page. I'm going to try to tackle this project using the tools you have given me so wish me luck.

  • Recommend replacement internal DVD player

I've been trying to find a posted question about what internal drives I can use to replace my original one, but can't seem to find anything pertinent.
So what internal drives can I swap in? Or what specifics should I look for so I don't have any problems. I don't want an external drive at all. Will any internal drive work?
Essentially I just need something that will read DVD's so I can finish importing the rest of my DVD collection.
    I've got an iMac 1Ghz running 10.5+.
    Thanks.

I got the Samsung optical drive today and installed that and a new Western Digital HD, as that had been diagnosed as failing by Tekserv. I added RAM new 512 on motherboard and 512 in the user slot on the bottom of the base.
Initially I had jumpered the optical drive and the hard drive incorrectly, and so when I tried to start it, nothing. I did hear a barely audible cheep..cheep..cheep
I checked with OSW/macsales tech and determined to make the optical drive the master and the HD the slave. Took all apart, made those changes and reassembled everyhthing
It still will not startup and still the cheep cheep cheep.
I do have power to the unit - thus the sound, but what's wrong? Is the HD bad?
I caarefully reconnected all wires, applied the thermal paste.
The only thing I can think to try is to put the old hard drive back in and see if it will still start from that HD. That would isolate the new HD as the failed part. I won't do that until tomorrow or Sunday. Any troubleshoooting ideas or help welcome.
    thanks

  • Disk utility is not showing my internal dvd player ...

AND, when I search the for "disk burning" under "hardware" in "about this mac", "more info" it says "No disc burning device was found" ! Can someone help me recover my superdrive? When I insert a disk it does not "grab" it, If I push it farther, nothing happens. Has it failed? Where or how or  CAN I do some diagnostics of my own rather than taking it to an apple store 60 miles away??

    Before giving up try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
Then check again and see if it is recognized by the system.

  • Burn dvd's from mac won't play on DVD player

I'm getting an error 'can't read disk' from my samsung bd-p2550 when trying to play a moving i created on my Mac Mini. I've created the movie using iPhoto to create a slide show movie. i renamed the resulting file from M4V to MP4 and burned to a DVD-R disk. inserted into the samsung dvd player and got the error message, even though the samsung is supposed to support mp4.
next i downloaded FLV Crunch and converted the MP4 to VOB(mpeg 2) format. burnt to another disk, same error.
i did some google searching and they talk about VIDEO_TS directories (which i see on my store bought movie dvd's). is there some directory structre that makes movies playable on a DVD player connected to a TV?
i can play the dvd's on my Mac Mini from the internal DVD drive, so that seems to indicate the file structure is ok.
    Any other thoughts?
    thanks!

Why use mp4 if it to be played on a DVD Player?
Save the project as a DV mov file and burn the DVD again in the usual DVD format of mpeg2.

  • Frame Capture In DVD Player?

Is there any way to do frame captures in Apple's DVD Player app? I know you can bring in Preview to Grab the Window, but is there a quick way to do it within the DVD player?

No plug-ins or shareware Apps to do this? I would imagine that a lot of people use this feature. PowerDVD for the PC comes with it built-in.

  • Imaging from external DVD player or an external usb hard drive

    Hey,
At the High School i work at we are running Netware 6.0 SP5 and Zenworks
4.01 ir6. We have Zen Partitions installed on most computers to store a
local image in case the the computer needs to be re-imaged.
However, we have a dilemma. Every now and then a hard drive will go in a
    computer.
When we replace the hard drive with a new one, we install the Zen
Partition, do the config and then our last step is to bring down an image.
Unfortunately our only means of dropping down an image is from the network
either through normal imaging or through multicast sessions.
When we drop an image down from the network which takes up network
bandwidth, it causes slow downs on the users computers and they start
complaining. Our network is running at 100mb.
Is there any way possible to image from an external DVD player or an
external usb hard drive when dropping down an image to a new hard drive in
the computer? Currently I have all my Zen Images on the external USB
Maxtor 160gb hard drive and I also have Zen Images burnt to DVD's.
If so, how do I go about doing this and is there documents on doing this?
    Thanks!!!

  • HP Pavilion HDX9000 Connect to External DVD Player

Our older HP Pavilion HDX9000 DVD died and we wanted to use an external DVD player to drive the monitor on the HDX9000.   It does not seem possible to do this despite the HDMI and many other ports.  The PC is running Vista.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
What is your external DVD player ? There are many USB DVD players for under $50 and you can use it as internal DVD player. You can't use DVD player from your home Hi Fi system because no available port on your computer to plug it in.
    Regards.

  • DVD Player 5.6 and OS 10.8.3

I purchased an LG DVD writer GP60NS50 to go with my MacBook Pro 15" Retina which has no internal DVD player.
When I put in a purchased DVD movie, DVD Player 5.6 starts up and plays the previews, but then it either jams when playing the FBI warning, or it will not let me choose to Play Movie. Once the menu background plays thru its music, DVD Player jams, and I have to force quit.
I can rip the movie to the hard drive, and then DVD Player lets me choose Play Movie, and the movie starts playing.
SO, why does DVD Player jam up on playing a movie from the DVD player? LG says there is no software update on this model, and it is Mac compatible.
I have re-loaded OX 10.8.3 with no change on DVD Player.

    Thanks.
The DVD Player problem solver has no problem listed that covers this.
I have opened my (invisible) User Library and deleted the DVD Player preferences.
    It didn't change anything.
I have region code 1 (US and Canada) chosen for playing DVD's.
I tried opening a movie with VLC. VLC quit.
I tried using Hand Brake to choose the movie. It quit too.
Playing the movie The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest jams up 5 seconds into a 7 second FBI warning.
Playing the movie The DaVinci Code plays all the previews and plays the 66 seconds of audio with the Play Movie choice on the screen. Clicking on anything gives the "Not Allowed" alert. Once the 66 seconds of audio is supposed to repeat, DVD Player jams up and I have to Force Quit.
I was able to rip both movies to the hard drive, and they both play fine with DVD Player from the hard drive.

  • External DVD player refuses to read DVDs

I've searched high and low on the internet and I can't find any solutions to this problem or anyone with this exact same problem. Yesterday I bought a region 2 internal DVD player (LG GH22LP20) as well as a USB enclosure (my Macbook Pro is set to region 1). I thought it would be as simple as plug and play, but it's not.
In both OSX and Windows XP the drive was easily installed and seems to be in working order, but when I put a DVD two things happen: if I try to autoplay it with VLC Media Player, the system will hang until I turn off the DVD player, at which point everything returns immediately back to normal. Secondly, if I try to navigate to the DVD or the VIDEO_TS folder directly through VLC, VLC will flash a black screen (the screen gets big for a fraction of a second and then minimizes again) and nothing else will happen.
I've tried DVDs from different regions, looked for driver updates, scoured messageboards looking for help, and nothing works. Is there some software compatibility issue with the Macbook Pro and the player? Or is either the player or the external housing to blame?

failed when I really needed it at the meeting
    Isn't that just typical!
Maybe a disk error, but equally likely is that the DVD needed a clean.
A single fingerprint is enough to stop it playing.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
