Capturing from mini DVD

I am trying to capture some footage that was shot with a camera that writes directly to a mini disk, instead of to a standard DV tape. Any advice on programs or methods of extracting the media from these would be appreciated. Also if anyone knows and could point me in the direction of a good mac compatible external DVD drive, i would be grateful.

No direct experience, but you're dealing with straight data so you don't need any special hardware for this. Beyond something that can read that disc and put its contents on your hard drive. You're on your own there - does the camera come perhaps with some system for this? A USB port?
Once you have the data on the Mac's turf, you should be able to use any of the following to convert to a QT in an appropriate codec and format:
Compressor, MPEG Streamclip, FFMPEG, VisualHub.

  • I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer and firewire. I cannot find the file or clips I transferred anywhere except for in Finder. How do I get the clips from Finder to FCP7. Also I did not see audio on the computer meters

I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer. I only find the capture clip in Finder. How do I get the clip in Finder to FCP7.
Also my audio in the capture was not showing up on my audio meters on my computer-is this normal. Thanks

you will not see the audio meters from within fcp move while capturing.
If you only see the captured clip in the finder, not within fcp, there's something wrong.  You might try deleting your fcp preferences

  • Can not upload video clips from mini dvd

When I try to upload video clips from mini DVD recorded on Sony Handycam it stats the files are read only.  I have tried finalized and un-finalized clips.

    Thank you for the reply.
Although what I posted in my post numbered 2 is interesting and useful information in the Premiere Elements ripping of VOBs from DVD-VIDEO, it is not answering your issue regarding a "read only" issue and did not target your specific "read only" message. Sorry about that.
The VOBs are typically read only files on the disc.
I have never run into a "read only" issue with regard to the Premiere Elements 10 Windows 7 64 bit Add Media/"DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive"/Video Importer. For that matter, not with any version of Premiere Elements with this particular feature.
When are you getting this message.
    a. When you click on DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive after Get Media
    b. When you click on Get Media in the Video Importer or other
Do you ever get a thumbnail for the VTS_01_1.VOB in the Video Importer? Is your burner drive recognized in the Source field of the Video Importer?
If you open and explore the DVD disc, go to the VTS_01_1.VOB in the VIDEO-TS Folder, go to the VOB's properties, can you remove
the mark next to "read only" and then have the Video Importer route work for you?
Also, if you copy the  VTS_01_1.VOB from the opened DVD disc and paste it to the computer desktop and remove the "read only" marking, can you then import
the VTS_01_1.VOB into Premiere Elements with its Get Media/Files and Folders?

  • Best way to encode from mini dvd's for FCP

My mom has a few mini DVD's that she wants me to edit for her. The DVD's are from the Sony DCR-DVD610. So my question is, what is the best way to bring the footage into FCP? Should I use Handbrake, or the MPEG Streamclip, or another program? Also, what settings should I use to encode them for use in FCP?

The "make dv" option in Streamclip works reasonably well for me.

  • Trouble Getting Files From mini-DVD (Handycam)

I don't know the first thing about those little camcorders that record to mini-DVD, but I'm working on a movie for a girl's dance team, and while most of what they gave me to work with was miniDV on an external HD, they did give me a mini-DVD with just under four minutes of footage on it to use also. Fortunately that disc isn't very important to them, and I don't really have to use it.
Anyway, I can't play the disc in my set-top DVD player; it says there's no disc. My computer's DVD player will play it fine using PowerDVD Player. I tried to rip the disc using DVD-Shrink and it acts like there's no disc in the tray too. Then I managed to rip it to the desktop as an ISO image with DVD-Decrypter with no problems. After that I tried to open the ISO image with DVD Shrink and it says: "Invalid UDF File System".
So, anyone have any idea how I can get the VOB files from this ISO image?

Well I think I kind of did that Bill. That is, I managed to rip the DVD to the desktop via DVD Encrypter and then burned the new ISO file to a new DVD. It still wouldn't open with anything I have that converts ISO to VOB files.
I looked at Sony's website about Handycams and it says this:
"After finalizing the disc in the camcorder, the disc can play back in most DVD Players".
The disc they gave me is a DVD-RW. Maybe the disc hasn't been finalized?
    But Sony also says:
"With DVD+RW media there is no need to finalize the disc (minimum recording required); simply remove the finalized disc and insert the media into a compatible DVD or Blu-ray Disc Player."
But the disc they gave me is DVD-RW rather than DVD+RW. At any rate I'm wondering now if maybe they should have finalized the disc before giving it to me and forgot to do it. The disc only has about 4-minutes of footage on it, so I'm guessing maybe they didn't finalize it because they thought they would add more later. I'll have to track down the owner and see what they have to say.
    Thanks

  • Loading movie from mini DVD

I have a Sony DCR-DVD92 that uses the mini DVD's for recording. There is no firewire or USB port on this camera. Since the iMac can't run the mini DVD's how can I transfer the movies from my Handycam to my computer?

If you can, buy a better camera. This camera was not designed for use with a computer or with editing.
If you have a lot of mini-DVDs from this camera that you want to edit, your best bet is to [buy a USB DVD player recorder that sits flat on your desk like the ones at this link|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives>. Do not put these little DVDs into the slot on your iMac. You may not be able to get them out.

  • Capturing from a dvd into FCP

I have a bunch of QuickTime files on a DVD that I need to capture. I have already imported them into FCP and it works fine but when I want to capture, FCP does not recognize the DVD deck (which is built in my Mac) and says "No Communication".
    what should I do?

because when I log a clip it shows "Media offline" message, so don't I have to capture the footage to my hard drive in order to use it in my project? How do I avoid the "media offline"? I also have some still pics that I have imported from another DVD, but once I take out the DVD from the deck it shows the Media offline message again...

  • How do you capture from a DVD

I was told you can capture from DVD using Adobe Premiere. How do you play the DVD to allow capture?

I've also found that Tsunami's authoring suite is rather handy for this. It will allow you to pull source material from a DVD and encodes it to a 720x480 MPEG-2 that pulls right into Premiere without issue. (Just watch out for the AC-3 encoding on some of the audio files).
Just my two cents, but why go DV-AVI when the file is already in distribution state (DVD) --

  • Import from MINI DVDS FROM CAMERA (FREE WAY)

Hey is there any free software that can help me with my problem, Thanks
Hey everyone. I just bought a mac... I need help importing my videos.
1st. I plugged my camera into the imac (MY camera takes mini DVDS-RW so i cannot just put them in the mac)
2nd: the dvd icon came onto my desktop, but when i open it i got a blue folder that is labeled DVD_RSTAV.
3rd: I opened it and the files inside were VR_MANGR.BUP and VR_MANGR.IFO, and also VR_MOVIE.VRO (The files inside the DVD_RSTAV folder are grey and green lettering in the top left.)
But when I open i movie HD and try to import nothing happens.
Is there any programs or software mac compatable that could help me import, or do u know how to import.
Thank you for taking yor time to help me

    Hello Scott,
AFAIK, there's no free way to convert MPEG-2 to DV. While MPEG Streamclip is freeware, it requires Apple's MPEG Playback Component for Quicktime for MPEG conversion. See the system requirements for Streamclip:
This free software requires at least Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and QuickTime 6. It is also compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther), Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) and QuickTime 7. It works with PowerPC and Intel based Macs. For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.
    hope this helps

  • How do i save video from mini dvd to mac

i have connected my sony dvd video recorder to my mac mini and can view the movie but it wont let me save the video to the mac.  Is there a software that i need purchase?  How can this be done sense i can't use a mini dvd with mac cd drive?

What program is this that you're using to play the video?
If you can "see" the Sony device on your desktop, you might just open it and locate the movie files there, and drag them to a folder on your Mac to copy them over. But iMovie should be able to import them for you.

  • Capturing from a dvd

I have a new Macbook pro with FCE and am wondering how I would be able to capture some footage into my computer from an authored DVD. Could I do it through FCE? iMovie?

You have two choice; hardware or software.
The hardware method involves connecting the analog outputs of a stand-alone DVD player to a qualified DV device (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) and connecting the DV device's Firewire output to your Mac. Set FCE device control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now.
The software method involves using a program like MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that FCE works with natively.

  • Can't find time code from original footage (captured from mini-DV tape)

Hi. I'm Old to mac, new to FCE, good at iMovieHD ('06). Just got FCE (4.0.1).
Imported some footage (a few random practice clips) from a mini-DV tape I shot, but I can only see the time coding for each clip, not where that clip begins and ends in terms of the entire one hour mini-DV tape.
My log is for the entire mini-DV. So this is a problem.
I suppose I could re-import the entire 60 minute mini-DV tape from the start, but shouldn't the time code be embedded into each frame?
    Help much appreciated.
    d the h

You can try the free filter FCE Timecode Display with its default settings to display the original timecode of each clip.

  • How can i improve the quality of films, captured from mini DV (sony DCR TRV 25E pal).

    The quality is miserable.
In Windows  and using Pinnacle software there is no problem. In Imovie the quality is very bad. I'm very disappointed about that.
I choose the highest quality and get poor results.
I hope someone can help me.

  • Screen Capture from DVD?

This is probably the wrong place to post, but I need help in a hurry. Is there a way to do a video capture from a DVD movie that is paused? I need to get a photo and the only place I have it is in a DVD movie.
    Thanks,

.. if you're entitled to do screen captures from that DVD, simply use a different DVDplayer app:
    VLC http://www.videolan.org/
open the DVD with VLC, and the usual Apple tools as mentioned above are available ..

  • Capturing from an Internal DVD player

    Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro & FCE 3.5. Is it possible to capture using my laptop's internal DVD player or can I only capture using an external DVD player hooked up with firewire?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

You can't capture from any DVD player without converting the material. It's in completely the wrong format. You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime with the DV codec.
