Capturing from old camcorder...

I've seen posts around this forum and others that people often use smaller consumer camcorders as miniDV "decks" as opposed to using their regular cameras, as it can wear down the tape heads. I have a project now where I was hoping to do the same thing, but I was curious as to quality disparity between clips imported from an actual deck which I use at work, as compared to what I import from my old JVC camcorder at home. My camcorder is about 5 years old, and was pretty cheap at the time...should that negatively impact the quality of the image I capture? It should play back at the same quality right? And capture just fine, as long as I'm using the same codecs? I'm going to try it when I get home tonight, I just wanted to make sure I won't be wasting my time.

Ah, I see...but if I wanted to give it a go without adding any hardware, how would I plug both the camera and the drive in? Would I need another different firewire cable?
One that would match the other input on this image I found?

I've also read that FCP hates working on the same drive as the media...does this apply to capturing? I could always just capture to the MBP HD and move it to the external when I'm finished, if FCP will allow it.
Thanks!

When it opens it says "no codec found". I used HDV Apple intermediate codec 1080i60. What codec should I use?

Do you mean Final Cut Express or FCP X?

  • Capturing from old Hi8 tapes

    1. What do I need to capture from old Hi8 tapes?
    2. I have a few old Hi8 cameras. Is there any value to these things? Can they be used for anything -- a web cam? Or are they pretty much just a waste of space?
    Thanks

You need some way to capture - DV deck, DV converter, capture card, etc... The Digital Hi8 cameras/decks allowed capture from Hi8 tapes. If you have a capture card/deck, you can play back the Hi8 thru it and capture the analog signal that way...

  • Importing video from old camcorder to mac without using a newer camcorder?

I'm trying to import old home videos from a camcorder (from about 1991) that uses cassettes, onto my Mac. I tried searching for this here and I found this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1943045&#1943045. But I actually don't have a newer camcorder to rerecord it on. Is there a way to get it on my computer without it?

    Hello Cris,
you actually don't need a new camera to get analog video into your mac, in fact there are not so many cameras that support AV-in.
read the thread you posted in your question again and you'll find an AV/DV converter, a device that "translates" from analog to digital, mentioned there.
these converters are not as costly as good camcorders, but of course they do only this one thing, so if you think about buying a new camcorder in the near future, you could buy one with AV-in .... two devices in one.
oh yeah: the canopus converters mentioned in that thread are supposed to be good.
    hope this helps

  • Dropped frames on capture from miniDV camcorder

Can't capture as I'm instantly gettting 'dropped frames on last capture' error message. I can control my sony DCR-PC5E PAL camcorder remotely though using Firewire.
Any suggestions as to how I overcome this please?

Dropped frames during capture are typically caused by:
    · Bad tape
    · Dirty or misaligned playback heads
    · Defective Firewire cable
    · Poor data throughput - using a Firewire hub; capturing from a Canon device; capturing to a USB hard drive; capturing to an improperly formatted hard drive; too many Firewire devices sharing the same Firewire bus

  • Cant see the videos that I captured from my camcorder, into iMovie, on my hard drive or in FCP.

I can only see these files in my iMove Library. I cant see them at all from inside FCPX. I just want to import the video's I already captured from iMovie into FCPX.

Version 10 of iMovie and 10.0.8 of FCP X Trial. If I could just locate where the video's I captured are in the Macintosh HD then surely I could use that video. They are large files I assume since they were captured from 1 hour long DV tapes but I just dont see them anywhere on the HD.

  • Capturing from old vhs tapes

I want to capture a bunch of old VHS tapes into CS6. I have an analog to digital converter that I'm going to plug a VCR into and a Firewire cable from the converter into my computer.
1.) Can anyone recommend any general settings for making sure I get the highest quality possible?
I'm looking at using the following settings:
    Sequence Preset
    DV - NTSC
    Standard 48kHz
    and then going to:
    - File > Capture
    - Press play on the controller at the bottom of the window
    - Press record on the controller at the bottom of the window
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

There are a few ways to take care of this. One is to crop the 2 pixels from the top and the 2 from the bottom from the source when you export. If you do that, you can scale it up a bit to take care of it, or stretch to fit. Either way, it is unlikely to be noticeable since the analog wasn't picture perfect to begin with. Or, you can just leave the black above and below. Hardly noticeable at all - depending on how you display it. If you put it full size on a white web site then it is a problem. Playing it out on a DVD is not problem at all. Nobody sees that far to the edge on most TVs anyway. Although more and more they show the entire picture.
Basically, I suggest that you capture a few seconds of video and play around with it before you get too far into the project. You might not even have the noise.

  • Retaining date/time when capturing from miniDV camcorder in PRE8

Has anyone a solution to the following problems observed when capturing
video/audio from a miniDV camcorder with Premiere Elements 8:
    1) Even if "Split Scenes" is deselected in the capture dialog box - the captured video IS split into separate .avi files
    2) When inspecting the .avi file metadata only the date is captured correctly from DV - time is always 23:00Z...?  I have used other capture tools to verify that correct date/time is actually available in the captured video.
    Thanks!

    No known solution for PRE:
    Timecode in AVI-Files
View video clip recording date in PRE7?

  • Batch capturing from my camcorder error

My mini DV camcorder is connected with the firewire. Final cut pro will control it with the transports and I can view it on the screen and mark start and end points. When I click on capture I get a "general error" and nothing happens. It works fine in Imovie and worked fine when I had final cut express installed. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter and you can not capture correctly in FCP. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Crash after capture from tape, have to repair permissions to re-open FCP.

    Final Cut 6 installed on 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Whenever I try to capture from a camcorder the computer locks up at end of capture and I have to repair permissions to get FCP opened again.
Doesn't happen when capturing from a hard drive or card.
    Really killing me time wise.
    Anyone else ever see this?

    Hi Spudsy,
Does this happen with one particular camcorder, if so which make and model is it. Also are you using capture now or log and capture.

  • IMovie 08 minor problem, hovering on "Done" while capturing from a camera..

In iMovie 7.0.1, when I am capturing from a camcorder, when I hover over "Stop", it shows "Click here to begin recording" instead of "Click here to stop...". The same is with when I am capturing with the iSight camera, it shows "Click to begin recording". This is a minor problem, but might confuse some computer illiterate folk and should be fixed in the next update.

    Thanks, I'll pass that along.
If she's upgraded her OS or QT beyond this point, which she's probably done -- in all innocence -- then to get it to work, she'd have to re-install earlier versions of both OS X and QT? Or buy a new, considerably more expensive version of FCP?
    Wow! That's a bummer.

  • Linking/combining data from old sensors

Is there any way to combine all the data captured from old sensors and add that to the current sensor data. My first sensor went bad. I would like to put that old data back on my iPod and combine that on iTunes with the current sensor...and then delete/remove the old/bad sensor from iTunes. The Nike website combines all the data as if there was only one sensor used, but the iPod and iTunes do not. Is there any way to do put that data from the old sensor back on the iPod and combine all the data in iTunes?
    Thanks.

I figured out how to do this--how to combine the old data with the new data and delete the old sensors from iTunes.
I downloaded an application called TinkerTool at http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
This application enables you to view the hidden files and folders (on your Nano). With this program I was able to find where the Nike+ data is stored on the Nano. The data for each sensor (including the workout data) is stored in a folder named "Empeds" at:
    Ipod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds
Before you attempt any of this, I would recommend you make a copy of this folder in case something goes wrong, you will have a backup (just in case).
    Here's what I did...
Within the Empeds folder you should see subfolders (or many subfolders if you had many sensors) with a long string of numbers and letters (e.g. 4H713B45VSX). Each of these folders represent a different sensor. Inside that folder (with the long string of numbers and letters), you will see several xml files with the workout date used as the name of the title of the file. I simply combined all these xml files and pasted them inside the folder with the current sensor data. The oldest sensor was listed first alphabetically...and the newest sensor was listed last.) Then I deleted the other folders with the (with the long string of numbers and letters).
Once I figured out how to do this, it took less than 5 minutes.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks.

  • Capture from camcorder Sony 8mm to FCE

I have been trying to capture my old 8mm tapes in FCE. I am playing from a Sony video recorder and I can see movie and all the controls work in the preview window but when I hit capture now it says waiting for timecode. What do I do? I took the tape and did a little record on the same tape and it will capture this??? Thanks for any help

It sounds like you're trying to capture your analog Hi-8 tapes on a Digital-8 camcorder (or deck). It works, but there is no timecode on the Hi-8 tapes so you get the error message. The 'little record' test you did put down a digital recording, so there was a timecode and you could capture it. You need to set FCE to "DV Converter" and then use the transport controls on the camcorder/deck to start and stop the tape.

  • Please Help:(,Unable to capture from camcorder using Audigy 2 ZS Video Edi

Hi there! Well I have been trying to use the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs video editor to transfer Hi8 tapes from my camcorder (Samsung SLC860) to my laptop (Compaq presario, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, .25 GB RAM, xp). I have successfully done this before *sort of*. Before i was able to capture video from my camcorder without the sound. But now I cant even capture video! I get an error when using Ulead VideoStudio 8 SE reading: 5065:29:0. Please help, anything would be great! Thank you! Oh, i've tried reinstalling the drivers already, didnt work. P.S. I connect the camcorder to the Creative Audigy using S-Video. I have also tried A/V out from the camcorder to video-in on the Audigy. I have also downloaded VidCap and other driver updates from Creative but those didn't work either. I've tried VidCap other capture programs, none worked. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for the reply, unfortunately, I've tried VidCap and it wont let me capture either. The Start button on Step 3 isn't acti've. Its not bold, and when i click on it nothing happens. But under device manager and Sound, Video and game controllers, there are alot of things. They are as followed: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Drivers, Media Control Devices, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Audio Device, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Video Device, SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio, Video Codecs. Do you think any of these could be interfering with one another? If so, which ones can be safely disabled? I've also tried downloading all the necessary updates for VidCap and I've even tried reinstalling the Audigy card many times. I am able to see the preview of the video on both programs VidCap and VideoStudio but I just can't capture. Once again, the error message on VideoStudio is: 5065:29:0. Thank you so much, hopefully I hear from ya soon and this can be fixed.

  • I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer and firewire. I cannot find the file or clips I transferred anywhere except for in Finder. How do I get the clips from Finder to FCP7. Also I did not see audio on the computer meters

I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer. I only find the capture clip in Finder. How do I get the clip in Finder to FCP7.
Also my audio in the capture was not showing up on my audio meters on my computer-is this normal. Thanks

you will not see the audio meters from within fcp move while capturing.
If you only see the captured clip in the finder, not within fcp, there's something wrong.  You might try deleting your fcp preferences
