Capturing from TivoTool to iMovie

Hi, I have a program called TivoTool that captures Tivo files to my iMac. The idea is to then import them to iMovie, remove commercials and burn with iDVD.
There are 5 file choices to save them to.
MPEG 2
MPEG 4
Unmuxed MPEG2
Unmuxed with wav
DVD format .VOB
When I saved it as MPEG2 it saved fine and played when double clicked with Quicktime. I couldn't import it though, when I dragged it to the timeline it says Importing for a second but nothing appeared. When I choice File, import same thing.
So I saved as MPEG4, when I import it starts to import but says it will be an hour.
Any idea which of these should work and why MPEG2 isn't?

Hi NH,
Any idea which of these should work and why MPEG2 isn't?... well, read the specs of iMovie on Apple'siMHD website...
you/Apple have to pay extra for a license to the MotionPictureExpertGroup... and for every flavor of mpeg, 1/2/4....
you can convert mpeg2 into dv with Streamclip... you are able to watch mpeg2? so, you've allready bought&installed the mpeg2 playback compound....
it starts to import but says it will be an houryepp, because any mepg has to be converted; mpegs don't offer frame accuracy for edit purposes, it is meant only for playback, because it doesn't store info/data of every frame... that conversion needs time, iMHD uses the lossless Apple Intermediate Codec to produce an intermediate file for the edit......

  • Can't capture from my cannon video camera to Final Cut or iMovie.

Hi. I can't capture from my cannon video camera to FInal Cut or iMovie. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think my iMac is recognizing the camera. I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
    You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

  • Cant see the videos that I captured from my camcorder, into iMovie, on my hard drive or in FCP.

I can only see these files in my iMove Library. I cant see them at all from inside FCPX. I just want to import the video's I already captured from iMovie into FCPX.

Version 10 of iMovie and 10.0.8 of FCP X Trial. If I could just locate where the video's I captured are in the Macintosh HD then surely I could use that video. They are large files I assume since they were captured from 1 hour long DV tapes but I just dont see them anywhere on the HD.

  • IMovie 08 minor problem, hovering on "Done" while capturing from a camera..

In iMovie 7.0.1, when I am capturing from a camcorder, when I hover over "Stop", it shows "Click here to begin recording" instead of "Click here to stop...". The same is with when I am capturing with the iSight camera, it shows "Click to begin recording". This is a minor problem, but might confuse some computer illiterate folk and should be fixed in the next update.

    Thanks, I'll pass that along.
If she's upgraded her OS or QT beyond this point, which she's probably done -- in all innocence -- then to get it to work, she'd have to re-install earlier versions of both OS X and QT? Or buy a new, considerably more expensive version of FCP?
    Wow! That's a bummer.

  • Can not capture from Sony HDV 1080i (recording in 60i)

    Hello
We are trying to capture from the above camera to a Mac Dual G5. We are using FinalCutPro 5.1.2. We are using a FireWire 400 cable to connect to the front of the computer (have also tryed back of Cinema Display). The footage was captured in HDV1080/60i, and we have tried the corresponding formats in Easy Setup (Basic, standard, Apple Intermediate).
The problem: we can control the camera from the Log and Capture windows, but when starting capture, no data is coming in, and the program therefor gives up after a few seconds (displaying a no data error message).
We have tried Batch and Now capture. We can log clips, and get the correct time code, but can not capture those clips due to the no data problem.

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

  • FCE capture from my Canon XHA1 captures as one long clip

I've never had this problem capture using FCE before. I'm capturing from a Canon XHA1 and it's capturing the video as one long clip rather than the many short clips I shot. And unlike when you capture DV, you can't use the "DV start/stop Detect option" when the footage is HD..so that's not a solution.
I'm using a new Macbook pro and was wondering if that has anything to do with it given that i"m using the newest OSX as well.
Any ideas? It appeared to do the same thing when I captured into iMovie.
Or or is there a setting on the camera that I've failed to change?

    Dear Phojo1,
I also have a XHA1 and am experiencing the same problem. I was wondering if you shot your footage in HD, and what are your settings on your camera for recording and outputting. The first footage I captured I used hd with 1440x 1080 apple intermediate with 29.97 rate. I had no problem. It captured each clip separately. Now I can only capture with dv/ntsc settings. I'm am trying to see where the problem is. By the way this started happening when I upgraded to 4.01. It also does the same in imovie. Thanks for any information.

  • Live Capture from GL2 Camera via Firewire

Image quality when capturing live video into iMovie from a Canon GL2 is very very grainy and poor quality. It used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD, but that no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up). The footage is totally unusable.
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference. Is there a setting that should be changed?

t used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) uses ALL of the image to form the video.
no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up).
I use both iMovie 09 and iMovie 06 with OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). (But when I need better quality I use iMovie 06.)
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference.
iMovie 06 and FCE have the same image quality. iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' so you have a bit lower quality.
Is there a setting that should be changed?
    No.

  • FCE capture from iSight on iMac?

    Sorry for the newbie question..
I just tried my new iMac and FCE, and I was wondering how to capture from the builtin iSight camera?
I know this is 2 questions, but can I also capture from my home movie DVD's?
    Thanks

Neither. I believe the current version of iMovie will capture from the iSight.

  • Capturing from camcorder stops

Sorry to repost this. Total newb here and couldn't figure out that I had to be in a category to post! So this is a repost from a reply I posted just below
I'm a new mac user. I switched b/c I was sick of using 4 separate programs to convert my camcorder footage into a DVD. I used to have no issues capturing in Windows using basic shareware software. I have a JVC miniDV camcorder. I've tried twice now to import a 60 minute tape. The first time, the capture stopped at 30 minutes. The second time, the captures topped at something like 45 minutes. I have over 60gb of space on my hard drive, and my recollection is that the file for 1 hour of footage should be no more than 12-13gb. I don't have the preferences set to limit clip size. I had a few questions:
    1) I was wondering if there's a way to capture w/o having to monitor the download for one hour?
    2) Can I just restart the capture from where the camcorder stopped to continue the capture?
    3) What file format does iMovie save my footage?
Thanks and much appreciation from a new convert. Thanks.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Hello Skim123,
I have the same problem sometimes, and my guess is that it's a dropped frame - but as I said that's guesswork. You could also try a new firewire cable.
Can I just restart the capture from where the camcorder stopped to continue the capture?
Yes, you can, although it might be better to rewind a couple of seconds. Otherwise you might loose a couple of frames, which causes a jump.
What file format does iMovie save my footage?
iMovie saves your footage in the original DV format.
    hope this helps

  • Capture from isight

i'm using the built-in isight on my macbook to take some videos for a few different projects. sometimes the videos are immediately ready to view in the 'clips' area and other times i have to wait for imovie to import the recorded clip. is there a reason why this is ahppening sometimes, but not all the time?

Neither. I believe the current version of iMovie will capture from the iSight.

  • Problem capturing from camcorder via FW

Thought this may helpful to somebody.
When I connect my camcorder (Canon ZR400) to the Mac (via FW400), the computer can 'run' the camcorder, ie make it stop/rewind/ff etc. However nothing is shown in the blue window, except the time counter.
I've found out that unplugging my other FW cable (FW800 connected to the external drive) fixes it.
(Not sure if I'd googled it up first or it was my own guess.)
Hope someone can pass it on to Cupertino too!

    Derek,
From your tests, it appears that your computer is now unable to capture from the camera.
When you plug in your camera and turn it on, you do get the Windows "bing-bong" sound, don't you? Does the camera appear in the Taskbar?
IIRC, you CAN control the camera from PrE. That would indicate that Windows IS seeing the camera. If so, then the easiest thing to check, the FW cable itself, seems to be working.
This would indicate that there might be an issue with the camera. Before we rush to that conclusion, let's do a test:
There are several sequences, that one could choose to Capture. Some cameras want things done a particular way, for them to work with the computer. The elements of the sequence are to plug in the camera to the computer. Let's keep that constant. Now, first turn on the camera in Play Mode, then launch PrE, then choose Capture in PrE (the exact name/tab might differ by version) - check. If that does not work, shut down PrE and turn OFF the camera. Next, launch PrE, then turn ON the camera, then start the Capture module - check. If that does not work, shut down PrE and turn OFF the camera. Now, launch PrE, start the Capture module, then turn ON the camera in Play Mode. I cannot think of any other variations on the sequence, but if you can think of a different order, try that.
You do NOT want to make any FW connections with the camera ON, so do NOT do that.
If none works, then it might well point to an issue with the camera, or with the computer's FW connection, or controller chip. At this point, because it's simple and cheap, I'd buy a new cable, and test as above. That will finally rule out the cable. To test the computer, find a friend with a FW connection, and Windows Movie Maker (or iMovie on a Mac), and try to Capture on that computer. If the above sequence tests fail on the new computer, it might be time to take the camera in for repair.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Trouble Capturing from Canon Optura 20

For the past few days I've had trouble getting FCP to capture from my camera. It is picking up the camera and I am able to control it (play, stop, rewind) from the computer. I set the in and out point to capture and it starts but only gets a few seconds before it says something is wrong with my camera or tape. I've tried capture now, capturing a clip and batch capture. iMovie will capture but the imported DV files from there don't work quite as well in FCP. It has all worked before so I'm sure its fixable. Any help will be much appreciated. THANKS!!!
    PB g4 and PM g5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

sounds like either a firewire bus or a quicktime issue issue.
If it has worked before and does not now, have you either added new external drives or upgraded your FCP/Quicktime installation?
new external drives: Try removing the drives and capture to an internal hard drive. Does it work? if so, you have a firewire bus collision issue.
upgraded FCP/Quicktime: Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Bad quality of capturing from sony SR5e.

I have used iMovie for several months. It worked quite well at first. However, in these days, problems are always appeared. Firstly, it always got rather bad quality of clips after capturing from my SONY HDR-SR5E. It seems lost some frames; all of the objects in it appears jumping when they are moving. Secondly, when I restarted the iMovie and tried to capture again, iMovie just quit unexpectedly. I have also tried using Final Cut Express to capture in my machine, it works fine and get a smooth clip comparing with iMovie.

Already try this. This is not the problem ...
It's something on the rendering of the colors. You can see that on those 2 screenshots on the image referenced in the post on my blog :

  • MiniDV capture from MV550i

    Dear Adobe Team,
I am trying to capture from a Canon MV550i camera, and:
         - from iMovie I am able to do it,
         - but from Premiere Pro, it starts and anfter few seconds it stops (most frustating).
Then I was thinking two options:
         - The driver for MV550i is not anymore available in Premiere Pro (as I cannot find it in the offered list, but iMovie automatically finds it).
If this is the problem, would be possible to download them from Adobe?...
         - I am not using the right options, but I have tried all of them. And really I cannot find any difference.
I am sure it is not the connections because I have optimized them, and also with iMovie it works...
I would really appreciate any feedback here.
