Capturing HD (miniDV) to MBP

Ok here we go:
we are off around the world, we have a trusty Sony HC1 (mini DV camcorder), we are looking at getting the entry level MBP 13", coupled to our lacie 500GB external HDD can we capture the HD video direct into the external HDD by daisy chaning? the MBP will be connected FW800 to FW800.
Am I correct in guessing that we simply connect FW on the HC1 to the HDD? oh and we are using Final Cut Express HD

I've rendered 1 hour vids on far less capable pieces of machinery than an MBP13, mike!
The AVCHD question may be a different matter, though. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
Sony unfortunately often don't play as nicely with Macs (or standards generally) as Canon and Panasonic. They have something of a penchant for going off on tangents of their own.
But as far as future Sony / Mac application software Q's go , you may be better off asking them in the iMovie or Final Cut forums, rather than here. Those guys are all over such sorts of questions in a flash!
Cheers

  • Unable to Capture with MiniDV Deck - Strange Problem

    Hello everyone,
I apologize if this is a repeat, but I couldn't find an answer among other discussions. I'll try to be as specific as possible..
The problem revolves around capturing a MiniDV tape. We are using a Sony GV-D1000 deck, which is connected via Firewire. Final Cut Pro recognizes the deck as a Device Control and Capture/Input setting.
We can control the deck, but we can't capture from it. The Log and Capture window reads "Preview Disabled". When attempting to capture, it pauses for a second and then says "The operation could not be completed as there is no video." This is very odd since the deck's display shows actively running video..
    Our system is as follows:
    8-core Mac Pro 2x3 GHz
    10GB RAM
    ATI RadeonX1900
    BlackMagic DeckLink HD Extreme Card
w/a bunch of Lacie hard drives which I kept off during the troubleshooting..
    Things I have tried:
    - Restarting without Firewire devices running
    - Trashing FCP prefs in the library folder
    - Repairing Permissions in Disk Utility
I found an article here that was interesting...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24110
It kinda implies that the other audio card (BlackMagic HD Extreme) might be the problem. But there is no way to disable this card... or is there?
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the troubleshooting. Getting close to identifying the problem.
I brought the deck home with me to try it out on my personal MacBook Pro system. Same problem. the tape would play back, you could control the deck, but it would not import.
David brought up the tape itself, which, logically, I hadn't even thought of. So I threw in a completely different tape and voila! No problems. Was able to control the deck, view the video on my Mac's display (finally!) and yes, capture video to disk.
Just to make sure the deck wasn't being screwy, I tested both the original tape and the other on my personal miniDV camera and yielded the same results. Except when playing back the original, video wouldn't even display on the camera's LCD screen..
    In short:
There has to be something funky with this tape that they gave us. We will probably ship it to another post house and see if they can get it to work out on a different deck. When I return to the office, I will try the other tape just to confirm there's nothing wrong with our Mac Pro system there..
Thank you all for you troubleshooting wisdom. I owe you all one.

  • Interlacing in capture from miniDV now occurs with upgrade to Win7 x64

    Hi there...
this is my first attempt to post a question on the forum, so thankyou in advance for any help or advice.
I used to run Prem Pro CS4 on a Windows XP (32bit) system with no problems at all.
I since upgraded my OS to Win7 x64 and a perculiar thing happened - when capturing from MiniDV the capture preview is very interlaced -with camera motion.  With capture complete and clips placed in the timeline, the interlacing is not at all evident. - it is only apparent at the capture stage.
Thinking it was my Nvidia 8600GT graphics card, I upgraded to Nvidia 9800GT (1GB) - still the same problem.  RAM was also give an upgrade to 8GB.
I understand the concept behind interlacing  - what has me puzzled is why with win7 this capture interlacing has happened and for the sake of clarity would love to have it rectified.
Otherwise Premiere runs smooth as silk.
Any thoughts or advide would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers

  • Screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15"

When I do a screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15" and paste it into Outlook or any other program it looks huge and distorted, how do I fix this?
I'm assuming it's because I am capturing the image in Retina 2880x1400 and then trying to paste that image into a non Retina enabled 3rd party program so it scales the image down which causes it to blow up the img and distort/pixelate.
I'm assuming there is a simple common sense fix for this which  Iam obviously unaware of...?

False alarm, took memory stick back to store and fault is same on shops mbp-r.  They swapped it for a new one and now everything is fine.  Sorry apple, how could I have doubted you!!

  • Retaining date/time when capturing from miniDV camcorder in PRE8

Has anyone a solution to the following problems observed when capturing
video/audio from a miniDV camcorder with Premiere Elements 8:
    1) Even if "Split Scenes" is deselected in the capture dialog box - the captured video IS split into separate .avi files
    2) When inspecting the .avi file metadata only the date is captured correctly from DV - time is always 23:00Z...?  I have used other capture tools to verify that correct date/time is actually available in the captured video.
    Thanks!

    No known solution for PRE:
    Timecode in AVI-Files

  • Question about capturing a miniDV footage

    Hello,
I have to capture 15 hours of footage from some miniDV tapes using a old Sony DCR--TRV30E camera and a recent MacBook Pro.
The internal disk of the MacBook will probably not be able to hold so many hours of video.
Is it ok to use a USB external disk (Iomega)? Good enough for capturing? I also have a Firewire disk but there is only one Firewire 800 port on the mac, and of course  it will be taken by the camera.
    What is the best strategy?
Many thanks for your precious advise.
    Best

Yes. Digits are digits. Firewire is preferred because the USB2 protocol uses data packets instead of the data streams that Firewire uses. There is no video quality difference between the two, only suitability for the bandwidth and delivery demands editing places on the media drive.
Once the material is captured, you can easily make a back-up copy on the USB drive should your main editing drive become corrupted or fail.
You should be doing this as a normal best practice anyway, even more so if you feel the material will not be recoverable if the drive should fail.
Firewire drives are cheap, you should keep a clone of both your computer drive, and another clone of your media drive as hard disk drives will become corrupted and fail usually at the worst possible time.

  • Capturing uncompressed HDCam into MBP

Hi All, this is my first post.
I would like to capture uncompressed HDCam into my MBP.
Would it be possible to do this using a Blackmagic Design Decklink Studio Card (designed for the Mac Pro) and a PCI Express adapter?
If anyone has any ideas other than this I would be grateful to hear them or if you have used the above setup and it worked...
    TIA

I'm guessing you'll get a better, more informed response over at the "video production" discussion:

  • Cannot capture from miniDV on new iMac27

I have just purchased an iMac27.  Previously, I was able to capture video recordings from my Canon ZR 850 miniDV recorder.  Now I cannot use the firewire cable as the input port is different.
I have tried using USB, but the message indicts that the presets for capture device need to be changed.  How do I do this please?  Is it even possible to use USB?  Will I need anther firewire cable that will connect to the backof the computer?  Is there an adapter that converts the old firewire plug to the new input format?
    Thank you.  Keith

I assume that your new iMac has only a FW800  socket so your FW400 plug won't work.
You can get a cable with the camera's 4 pin socket on one end and the new 9 pin plug on the other.
(The old FW400 had a 6 pin plug).
Best place to look for a cheap one is Amazon.
    This is what you need.

  • Interrupted Capture of MiniDV video, CS5.5.

I am a CS5.5 user and am having a video capture issue.  The capture randomly stops and starts during video capture(MiniDV).  The VRC keeps playing so there are missing areas in the captured video.  I have tried all the basic things, such as, restarts, etc.  Can anyone help?

  • Capture/tranfer miniDV tapes onto DVDs/CDs

Since i upgrade my computer to Tiger 10.4.9, I can't capture without dropped frames any more with FCPro 4.5. According to Apple, I have to have FCPro 5. I wonder if you guys know a way /software that allows me to transfer footage from miniDV tapes to DVD or CDs. Thank you all.

I tried and It didn't work for me. Dropped frames could be from many other reasons. So I don't know. I movie works for me just fine.
After doing everything according to the instructions of the link, my final cut pro lost the audio during capturing. I didn't hear any noise even though the sound bars/levels indicated that there were sounds. I just couldn't hear it and figure out why. I had no problems whatsoever in I movie with the same tape. Thought you'd like to know. I appreciate any tips/info... however.

  • Is it possible to define the frame size when capture from MiniDV?

I am editing a series of tapes which I did not film and don't have the original camera. I am capturing it using my Canon ZR500. When I capture it the frame size is 720 by 480 (3:2). Is there any possibility that by using a different camera I could be inadvertently changing the frame size? (I can't see where I could but someone in this project thinks the aspect ration should be 4:3 - I can't see anywhere I could be changing it.)

I have just given this a quick browse but I think it just explains how to make slides match the frame size. I used keynote to make the slide - probably not the best but I don't have photoshop. But the principle should be the same?
But using an incorrect slide size shouldn't affect the aspect ratio of the final video should it?
After I create the .mov file from FCE I use MPEG Streamclip to produce an .mp4 version to upload to the internet. If I use Streamclip to view the stream info it still shows a frame size of 720 by 480.
    Am I missing something?

  • Dropped frames on capture from miniDV camcorder

Can't capture as I'm instantly gettting 'dropped frames on last capture' error message. I can control my sony DCR-PC5E PAL camcorder remotely though using Firewire.
Any suggestions as to how I overcome this please?

Dropped frames during capture are typically caused by:
    · Bad tape
    · Dirty or misaligned playback heads
    · Defective Firewire cable
    · Poor data throughput - using a Firewire hub; capturing from a Canon device; capturing to a USB hard drive; capturing to an improperly formatted hard drive; too many Firewire devices sharing the same Firewire bus

  • Auto Loggint and Capturing of miniDV tapes

Is there a devise or work flow that will let me simply "throw" a tape in my DV Deck and have the computer automatically log and capture - making new clips at break points - just like iMovie - but in Final Cut Pro? Or is there a separate devise that does this which is independent of the workstation?
I'm basically the producer/editor/video manager and I need to cut down my time that i spend logging and capturing tapes or my productivity will be terrible!
    Thanks for your help.

Try CatDV. Many people swear by it.

  • Suddenly Unable to Capture

For the past four months I have been (more or less) successfully capturing from miniDV tape with FCPX.  I use a SONY HDV deck and occasionally a SONY DCR VX2000.  Suddenly this morning I am unable to capture.  The deck is recognized by the computer.  It appears under CAMERAS in the upper left hand corner of the Camera Import window. Further more I DO have control of the deck using the buttons at the bottom of the Camera Import window.  The time code counter also appears and behaves normally.  However there is no audio or video.  Just a black screen. I switched the firewire cable and tried a different deck, neither of which made a difference.  Same substitution drill with the tape had no effect. I then tried the same orginal deck and wire on a different computer (someone else's) and was able to capture successfully. Unfortunately, I am not able to do so on mine.    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

  • Trouble with JVC GY-HD100: trying to capture in DV NOT HDV

    Hello all!
First let me say I am a long-time reader of these boards and they have saved me on many, many occasions. However, this is my first post!
I have used FCP for over 6 years with my trusty Canon XL1 and XL1s with relatively few issues. I recently shot a feature in HDV using the JVC GY-HD100 (in 720p 24 no less - yes, yes, I know, what a mess). I used the Firestore Pro-HD to store the footage, which added additional fun getting those m2t files onto the computer and into FCP. What a headache it was jumping from DV to HDV systems, getting the very pricey HD monitor and AJA Kona LH card, etc. Believe it or not, my HDV workflow has equalized and I successfully edited the feature in FCP (everything worked pretty smoothly once I got all the footage into FCP).
Anyway, that was a complete digression from my issues right now. I got a corporate job that required two cameras, so I decided to use my XL1 and new JVC (my other XL1 is broken) . The job did not require HDV, so I used the JVC in standard DV mode. I figured I could always capture the miniDV tapes in my XL1 (broken one is now deck, ha, ha). Well, the tapes recorded in the JVC camera do not register timecode in the XL1 (picture looks ok though) and the audio is a little scratchy.
So I decided to try capturing the footage from the JVC. Now the problem is I cannot get FCP or what seems to be the computer itself to recognize the JVC in DV mode. I have two editing systems:
    #1 Dual 2 GHz G5, OSX 10.4.7, QT 7.1.2, FCP HD 5.1.1
    #2 Dual 800 MHz G4, OSX 10.3.9, QT 7.1.2 , FCP HD 4.5
(I use #1 for HDV and #2 for DV)
I've tried getting FCP to recognize the JVC on both systems and it cannot find it. iMovie cannot find it either. Even though the JVC GY-HD100 is not on the list of approved cameras for NTSC capture (only for 720p 30 HDV), I've read on the boards of others who have used it in standard DV mode without issue. So now I am trying to figure out if there is something wrong with the firewire port on the camera. Here is something that is fishy: under the system profiler, usually a firewire device like a camera will show up under the bus (my XL1 does), but the JVC does not.
I've tried the trashing prefs, trashing QT pkgs and reinstalling, repairing permissions, etc., which are all in effort to get FCP to work, but I'm not even sure that this is a FCP issue, it might be a firewire issue.
So after my long-winded post (sorry!!), has anyone here used the JVC GY-HD100 to capture DV footage into FCP and did you have to do anything special to get the computer/FCP to recognize the camera. I guess I can also use my Kona LH board using the video out from the camera (and bypass the firewire), but I've never used it for SD/analog capture before, so if anyone has experience with the settings for that scenario, that would be great also. I mostly use my Kona to output the HDV to my HD preview monitor.
Ugh...needless to say I'm stuck in the middle of a project with half its tapes captured. Thank you very much in advance for your help!
