If I want to capture HD DV fig. to FCP is the only thing I have to do is change the capture setting to 1080i (50 or 60)?

  • Captured Clip in Quicktime Pro turns weird in FCP

    Hi Guys-
Just thought I'd use QT Pro to capture a 'capture now' style, long form project so I wouldn't tie up FCP. Maybe it's just me, but not only does the encoding not look as good, but I have problems playing the clip in FCP. Whether or not the clip really is out of sync, the point at which you stop it is not the frame that appears. The audio only plays while scrubbing and when the clip is stopped, the clip magically changes contrast a bit until it's played again. Sounds corrupt to me. I am not nor ever have had a problem capturing directly inside FCP. Just wondered why its companion program is so fouled up. Thanks.

I can't understand why this is happening. can anyone explain what I am doing wrong.
Does the file contain multiple video/video associated data tracks?

  • Can't use HDV quicktime .mov files (captured in Final Cut Pro) on a mac at work) on my PC at home

    Hiya everyone!
I've taken some work home from the macs at work, but can't open it on my PC.
Footage was captured in FCP on a mac at work, HDV quicktime .mov, but won't open in the newest quicktime, windows media player and more importantly in Adobe After Effects CS3 or Premiere Pro CS3 on my PC at home.
When I try opening the files in quicktime, the screen is white, but the audio plays. They don't open in windows media player at all. When I try to import them into Premiere, I get a message reading, "Error Message, Codec missing or unavailable". But they import into After Effects, except they only play as white...
I've tried converting them into almost everything, and they often play (as .avi for example in the newest QT, WMP, Adobe Premiere and AE), but they increase A LOT in size and decrease A LOT in quality.
The HDV files that won't open read as:
    Source: *.mov
    Format: HDV 1080i50, 1920 x 1080, Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 48.000 kHz
    Movie FPS: 25.00
    Playing FPS: (Available when playing)
    Data Size: 69.53 MB
    Data Rate: 28.10 mbits/sec
    Current time: 00:00:01.64
    Duration: 00:00:20.76
    Normal size: 1920 x 1080
    Current size: 1920 x 1080
Anything smaller than 1920 x 1080 plays fine.
I've been all through google, and the adobe and apple sites, and the best I could find is here:

My problem is almost identical to these 2...
No one in the whole world seems to have an answer...
Does anyone here know how I can use the HDV files from the work macs on my PC at home?

As a rule of thumb, any CoDec associated with the Apple Pro applications is generally not available on Windows. This also includes their flavor of HDV. The only exception at this point is ProRes, for which they added a player component recently. So therefore this would have to be what you use for capture/ export from FCP. Apart from that you can of course always buy a capture card from Blackmagic or AJA with the benefit of the CoDecs being available cross-platform... Or you use a commercial software-only CoDec like Cineform.

  • My external hard drives are causing problems when i capture DV in FCP

We have external hard drives (2 different brands lacie and WD) are causing dropped frames when I capture DV in FCP. This only happens when they are connected via firewire 800. When I connect them using USB everything works great. Any ideas why this could be? We have 2 of each drive and 2 older mac pros and they both have this issue with every combination of drives I try. I've also tried reseting the ports with no luck...

Connecting your camcorder to even 1 FW drive constitutes daisy-chaining.  Even if you have two FW ports in your Mac, connecting a drive to one port and your camcorder to the other is the same as daisy-chaining as far as  your Mac is concerned.
Try capuring from your camcorder with no exernal FW drives attached.  Verify that works before trying anything else.
Also, I noticed your profile says you have a Mac Pro.  You might consider adding a FW card in order to get extra FW ports that are not on the same FW bus as the built-in FW ports.  Then you could connect your external FW drives to the card; and your camcorder to the built-in ports and it should work.

  • Problem capturing with Final Cut Pro 5.0

I seem to have a problem capturing to my new macbook with FCP 5.0 installed. I know how to capture and I've done it a million times before but this is the first time with this Mac.
I'm capturing from my MiniDV camera via firewire. I've checked if my scratchdiscs have enough room and it has plenty (250gb).
Everytime I go to capture, a box comes up that says "General Error" with no error code. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem with me. J just bought a macbook pro 2,33 Hz.
When I capture on my FCP 5.0.4 there is no problem but when I push the " esc" button to close the capture he FCP crashes. Help me I bought the Macbook pro to edit on location and now I can't capture.
I use a DSR11 of sony to capture. Fire wire input (SD PAL)
Even I use a XD-cam same problem no capture.
    HELP ME PLEASE !!!

  • Changing capture size in QT Pro?

We have two dual core G5's which we use to capture video in quicktime pro. On these machines the default size for H.264 is 320x240, which is what we want. I also want to capture video in QT pro on an older G4. However, it gives me 240x180 as a capture setting for H.264. Is there a way to change this that I'm just not seeing?

Is there a way to change this that I'm just not seeing? No. As Colin has indicated, the QT Pro capture feature is "adaptive" based on platform/CPU power available. If you want a stable size and data rate, either use an editing application (e.g., iMovie, FCE, FCP, etc) or a dedicated capture utility (e.g., Vidi) to capture in device native (DV) and convert as needed. Otherwise the capture/conversion settings will vary dependent of workload and the platform/CPU running QT Pro.

  • Can I capture with Final Cut Pro and edit in Premiere Pro?

Since it appears that Premiere has issues with capture - at least for me but as I see it for others as well - and that I can capture with iMovie, can I consider using Final Cut Pro for capture - then cross to Adobe Premiere and the suite for editing, finalizing ? Or is there a problem to copy the shots/files from one program to the other (would they remain identified clearly so I could just import shots into Premiere afterward ?)
    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
When you capture HDV in FCP it creates a specific Apple HDV codec. This is a codec that is only available if FCP, Motion or Compressor is installed.
The two workarounds would be to use Premiere Pro on the Mac with one of the above mentioned apps installed on the same system or convert to a codec that can be read in Premiere.

  • IMovie 11 to FCP Pro X: cure for single-field?

I've got a lengthy home movie (sourced from a DV tape) that I've edited in iMovie 11. Unfortunately, I've been stuck with the single-field processing issue where the output is effectively at half resolution. Now that I can import this movie into FCP Pro X, I'm wondering whether that will cure this single-field problem, if I then continue editing in FCP and output it from there? Or will I need to scrap the project, start from scratch, and re-import from the camcorder into FCP directly?

"Some of the procedures I've seen before changed all of the dates to the day of conversion and I need to save the original info."
    Very good question.
I've been testing with tapes that have analog video copied to them so the DV time/date is meaningless. They only show the date I copied them from VHS to DV. When I'm sorting to clips to folders I have to remember is this Japan 1989 or 1991? Then name the TO folder based upon my memory. And of course I don't need the DV timecode in iMovie when I edit.
You need the Time and Date information from the camera to be used to date the folder when the video is imported into iMovie. Correct?
I will test with some video shot with the DV camera.
PS: Here is a description of how CatDV figures out how to divide a long movie into "clips."
CatDV uses two methods to detect scene changes.
It detects the start and end of each scene or shot in a DV movie using the digital date and time information recorded to tape by DV and Digital8 camcorders. As a result it is normally 100% frame accurate in the scenes it identifies in captured footage. On rendered footage and analog material, on the other hand, this extra information is missing and so CatDV won't be able to detect any scene changes using the DV method.
CatDV also has the ability to compare the actual visual content of successive frames to detect scene changes. This allows you to import and log footage captured from an analog capture card for example. By its nature this method is not foolproof, however, and is liable to detect false changes when there is rapid movement within a scene, and to miss changes, for example if the camera is held on a tripod between shots and there is very little change between them, or if you have applied a fade or dissolve between two clips. It is also slow and computationally intensive, and so whenever you have the choice you should prefer to use the DV-based detection on original footage.
You can control which detection algorithm(s) are used when importing movies in the Preferences dialog.

  • Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
    Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.

  • Can't capture video with FCP 5.1

    Hi All,
Here is the case. I'm trying to capture the video from my newly baught Sony HDR FX7. Here are the specs:
I've connected it thru Firewire 400 on the back of my G5.
    G5 660GB HD, 5.5Gb RAM
In Easy set up I've selected HDV-1080i60
When I go to file-log and capture, it connects to camcorder and says VTR OK on the bottom of the screen.
When capturing the video (after I've connected to log and capture I push play on camcorder and then click capture now on FCP) I could see on the capture screen and my video running but here an there a green line would cross the film and then it would slow down for a 10th of a second and line would run accouss the capture window again. The type of lines you'd get in the old movie? .
After I've captured all 5 sigments I had on the tape and when I tried to play (I went to file-import-file, I've selected the captured clip from my internal HD where the FCP put the files). The file opened in browser. And then it open in preview window of FCP. At this point the clip that is 1 minute long would play for 2-4 second and end there. The quality of it was also very, very poor (and I filed it at HD 1080i.
So, the quality was really poor. It was the case with all 5 clips I've captured from FX7. All of them 2-4 sec. long and very poor quality.
Now, if I try to play the clip from camcorder and select "in" and "out" points and then batch capture via the same log and capture window, it would tell me that it's "unable to locate timecode, the timecode appears to be missing from the tape. Please verify that tape is timecoded correctly"
So, I was reading this forum and did this:
Tried to go to user preferences and set "on time code brake" select "make new clip"
    Nothing helped.
Also it's worth noting. When I push play on camcorder and click capture now, new window comes up and it says on the bottom of it "searching for meadia..." press esc to stop or something like that. May be it's not finding it?
Also, when I first filmed with this camera, I would stop after every clip, turn off the camera, plug it into tv and preview what I've filmed.
Either way, the few seconds of the clips that I"ve got are very bad quality. When I view the clips on my TV and monitore connected thru 3 colored cables, the video was ok, I'd even say good, just too much noice in it. But quality of capture is horrible.
If anyone is readying this, could you please give me some ideas where to go with this. I don't know what to do from here

  • "fire wire" video capture cards for mac pro

....Have Power Mac ver. 10.9.5 system Maverick w/ 4 MB RAM & am trying to locate hardware for:
acquiring "FIRE WIRE" video capture cards for mac pro.... ? Any suggestions....?(Just purchased Adobe CS 5 premium)

Your question doesn't make much sense.
What type of Mac Pro do you have? Is it the new black cylinder or the old style silver tower?
Firewire is built-in to the old models & the new Mac Pros can use Thunderbolt to Firewire converters to capture from Firewire sources.
    Maybe like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
Many older cameras used Firewire for capturing, but that has been replaced by other connection types. What are you trying to capture from?

  • How does FCP Pro X handle mixed frame rate video clips?

My camcorders are by Canon and both can shoot 50i or 25p. Normally I shoot 25p to avoid interlace artefacts. As I understand it, FCP Pro X conforms the clips to match the initial clip in the storyline. But what would be the outcome if I included clips from another camcorder that only offered 30p? Would those clips be converted to 25p if the initial clip was 25p. Or, would the 25p clips be converted to 30p if the initial clip was 30p?
Assuming I made a movie entirely out 30p footage, would that be uploaded to You-Tube at that frame rate?  If my movie is 25p is that converted to 30p for You-Tube upload? Could I otherwise export a QT movie to my desktop at 30 fps or any other frame rate?
It seems that the 25p setting on my camcorders still means that the recording is made as 50i but repackaged somehow. Can anyone explain please?
Yes, I am in the UK in a PAL environment.
    AW.

But what would be the outcome if I included clips from another camcorder that only offered 30p? Would those clips be converted to 25p if the initial clip was 25p. Or, would the 25p clips be converted to 30p if the initial clip was 30p?
Subsequent clips will be converted to match the project settings created by the first clip into the timeline. I don't know how well FCP does this timebase conversion from NTSC to PAL frame rates or vice versa. Compressor would probably do a better job. There is also Standard Conversion software from Graeme Nattress that will do an excellent job.
YouTube will take either. You would need to use Compressor to change the frame rate on export, though you don't want to do that unless you absolutely have to.
Most consumer cameras do not actually shoot 25 separate frames when they're set to 25p. They shoot what's called segmented frames, two fields just as the 50i setting, only the two fields are supposed to be identical. That's the theory; in practice some cameras do this better than others.
